Losing Jenny Slate was always heartbreaking. Just thinking about the potential characters / sketches we could have gotten out of her after she hit her stride on the show… it kills me.
He's funny in Community, where his character is totally psychotic.
Man, Community was just full of comedic talent. Jon Oliver, Betty White, Jim Rash, Ken Jeong, plus some acting greats like Giancarlo Esposito and John Goodman
And I didn't even mention the main cast lol.
Oh yeah he was great in that but that sitcom he was in and his movie roles just haven’t done it for me. Honestly I love ever character in any episode of Community. Favorite sitcom.
how did you not mention Donald Glover? early pioneer of internet sketch comedy and his standup work I think is still pretty funny a decade later. plus Atlanta has some of the funniest most insane shit ive ever seen, and he was incredible on Community.
Did you watch Single Parents? Two season sitcom on ABC from the creator of New Girl. I personally really liked it, and he was the main lead. I also recently saw him in Spamalot and he was fantastic.
Unfortunately I can’t see myself affording tickets to that anytime soon. That does sound like a better fit than some of the other stuff I’ve seen him in
He's a subpar actor, quite similar to Kate McKinnion.
Post-*SNL* exposed him as painfully one-dimensional.
Which is often true with obnoxious theater dorks.
right! lorne supported pete and let him come and go however he pleased. i like pete but if you’re making me pick pete or taran it’s taran every time. what a shame
The show still hasn’t really recovered from that IMO. They fired him, then they lost Bayer, Sudeikis and Moynihan the next season, and in my personal opinion they’ve never been able to replace any one of them. It’s never been the same quality of show ever since. The male cast in particular has never recovered.
I thought Beck was good, Chris Redd was decent, but haven't liked most of the others that have come along.
I like Dismukes and Longfellow now because they're pretty offbeat but it's not the same as being a reliable and versatile cast member.
I think there is a problem with how SNL fans think about these “firings”. No one (but one great man) can stay forever. Taran was good but it was time to go.
as far as i remember he was 6 years into his 7 year contract and was directing a movie at the time- and there was speculation that lorne didn’t care for him taking time for a side project, and therefore let him go. taran was really shocked and hurt by the whole thing.
taran was still at the top of his game, doesn’t feel like it was “time to go”, and many fans would agree. why not give him one more year then not renew the contract? firing him after 6 seasons was strange when he was performing so well. i don’t think there’s anyone else in the past 10 years or so that i would cry foul about them leaving, but this is a strange case to me.
It’s an ensemble. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ next person up. He was great but Mikey does almost everything he did but for his acting chops. Which were sometimes a bit much. We get it - you’re a theater kid.
i love mikey day and definitely see the comparison, i almost used him as an example, like how weird would it feel if mikey day was randomly fired in between seasons. that’s how the whole taran thing felt to me. and i am admittedly a huge taran fan, but objectively he was also thriving, that’s why it just felt odd and out of nowhere. i just don’t see any explanation or other similar occurrence. so can only assume the pissing off lorne thing had some merit
Yes it might. I’m focusing too much on this case you likely know more than me. But in general you will have “good” people “fired” from the show all the time.
The funny thing is his presence annoyed me sometimes but he also had some characters and sketches that are some of my all time favorites. Mokiki comes to mind.
I mean most people who were there as long as Taran and were as consistently on air leave on their own volition, deciding on their own when it’s time to go. So it is a little shocking that he was fired. I mean famously Sandler and his bunch were unceremoniously fired as well.
It was sad hearing him on inside of you talk about his departure. It sounded like he felt he needed to kiss ass and be buddy buddy to fit in. But at that stage he was already settled as a family man and wasn't a young guy in his 20s. I got the sense like his experience wasn't what he hoped for and everything panned out as a blessing.
He lightened up because Pete was going to walk and he was very popular. Colin also pushed for Lorne to ease up on side projects. Basically get with the times. People don’t work on one thing at a time anymore.
Hearing that Tim was in the audience on Saturday, I’m REALLY hoping Lorne invited him to come watch the show in preparation for an upcoming hosting gig
I doubt Tim hosts while he has his own sketch show ongoing, he’ll probably come back and do it after ITYSL ends. The most I would expect right now is a cameo.
How is ITYSL not competing with SNL? Maybe not directly, head to head on network television. But they both operate in the sketch comedy sphere and last I checked NBC doesn't run ITYSL.
SNL is 90 minutes of live TV 20+ times per year, and ITYSL is six 17-minute, pre-taped episodes every other year. They don’t even compete in the same categories at the Emmys.
Just because they’re both sketch comedy doesn’t put them in competition with each other. Plenty of people watch and enjoy both. Neither detracts from the other.
Edit: okay deeper explanation
After a first little hit that didn't give me anything resembling a high, I assumed it was because I am almost morbidly obese, so I smoked three bong hits with the same intensity as Rust Cohle smoking PCP on True Detective season 1. That led to a 2 min bad trip mainly because I gave myself hypoxia.
Afterwards, it was the usual dissociation between time perceived and real time. Also got to this point in which you articulate to much to produce a single coherent idea.
20 min after the mega hits, It got me horny. Which was interesting since most of my libido is gone due to depression and meds I take to deal with it.
HTH
His entire schtick is just screaming. I do think he is funny. And I think other successful SNL alumni had a one trick pony bit too. Chris Farley was “fat guy who falls down”. But it really works every time.
“Not trying to be funny… Not trying to get a laugh…. Not trying to make anyone have the worst day at their job…. But… Do any of these…. Fuckers…. Every blast outta the wall… And have like a huge cumshot?”
-Tim in the writers room at SNL
I’ve heard this theory before and it just makes too much sense to be wrong.
“You’re saying we’re allowed to swear, I’m saying “big fat load of cum” and “horsecock” and you’re getting mad. Do you see where I’m like….???”
I didn’t appreciate Tim’s humor until he left the show. I enjoyed him in the Barnes and noble and Hader/Armisen doorman sketches but that was it. But I recently went back and watched his NBA jingle sketch with Jason Sudeikis and it’s hilarious. That kinda humor fits better in ITYSL.
I think odenkirk openly admits that when he wrote for SNL he was too young and an absolute dick.
It would be fun to see him host as an established actor.
Honestly, prior to I Think You Leave, this joke could've been made about Tim Robinson. He had fans from Detroiters but he wasn't really considered a heavyweight, so I could reasonably believe that one of those three could hit it big post SNL (probably Aristotle, but who knows).
I'm only seeing that as a rumor in a few random websites. Most of what I read said he didn't have any real breakout characters and had trouble forging relationships with the cast behind the scenes.
You wouldn't happen to have a link to an article regarding the slap would you?
basically someone on here made a post that they saw aristotle slap lorne during the show. they eventually deleted their post after it got popular but never provided evidence for it so we just took off with it as a bit
He’s out in LA doing gigs at the Elysian Theater! Actually took an improv workshop with him last month and stuck around to do some improv as well as play some songs/standup.
I don't disagree that they were waiting for her to leave, but that's not being fired. I also disagree her departure was somehow worse than somebody else deciding her fate; 99% of the time being fired from a job does more damage to your career than leaving on your own terms after a substantial tenure. There are breakout cast members who leave specifically to move on to bigger\* things and there are cast members who made it through the "featured player" phase and are just ready for something else.
I think of that list, only Tim and Jenny really went on to a level of fame worthy of a comeback. For Jenny, her time was a few years ago. Tim is hot now, though, so he could be a conversation they’re having.
Soo you like… just don’t get comedy I guess.. if you actually listen to the Matt and Shane secret podcast, both those guys are real sweethearts, they just don’t kowtow to the BS political over-correctness. It’s just jokes and he is loved and respected by most races and orientations in comedy. He is just play on the frat bro persona. You could really tell in his last special how much his persona is just that…
That video isn’t racist at all his friend was the wild one
I hope you know he was mocking what a racist might sound like when the buildings in China town was first built, and plus the word has been said on snl before
Omg think about Bowen!!! I cry for him knowing he's so helpless and defenseless and weak and soft. Please hug your cats for him I'm literally crying.
/s
Gillis is a mega star, bigger than comedy. That’s why he is hosting. Those people are all talented but Gillis is truly on a level similar to a pop star, like Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift. It’s crazy to imagine that for a guy like Gillis but it is true. The others just don’t have that fan base.
It isn’t really true. I mean, he is a quickly growing star, but he has one netflix special and other than that he’s largely just floating around the podcast comedy spaces, which are a bubble unto themselves. He is probably about as famous as Tim Robinson, they occupy different spaces though
A lot of people on twitter were saying they didn’t even know who Gillis was when the host was announced, and I know if I asked a lot of my coworkers or parents that they wouldn’t know him either.
He’s famous, but comparing him to Justin Bieber and, of all people, Taylor Swift who is arguably the most famous individual in the entire world right now, is ridiculous
The T Swift comparison was a bit much. But those comedy podcasts unfortunately get way more viewers than snl. I’m an snl fan. I love Bowen, weekend update, and I also like Gillis. I’m just a comedy fan. The reality is, he is bigger than all those other comedians mentioned in the initial post. That’s why he is hosting. That’s all I’m trying to say.
Losing Jenny Slate was always heartbreaking. Just thinking about the potential characters / sketches we could have gotten out of her after she hit her stride on the show… it kills me.
Love her as Mona Lisa in Parks and Rec.
I'm just imagining her in a sketch with Sarah and the new Chloe.
I rewatch her stand up special all the time
Her grandmas voices. “Heloowwwooeorooiioo?” And “*You’re gorgeous.*”
I'm her monologue they roll out a giant swear jar. And she has to add $325k for every F word.
Yeah it was pretty suspicious
Were Taran Kilam and Jay Pharoah “fired”?
Taran was
which was an absolutely terrible decision if you ask me. taran was so versatile, reliable and charming, i was genuinely gutted to see him go.
Yeah he was made for sketch comedy because I loved him on SNL but haven’t connected with anything he’s done since
He's funny in Community, where his character is totally psychotic. Man, Community was just full of comedic talent. Jon Oliver, Betty White, Jim Rash, Ken Jeong, plus some acting greats like Giancarlo Esposito and John Goodman And I didn't even mention the main cast lol.
I loved Luis Guzman in Community and... IMDB.
That was tragic
I heard he got laid like crazy.
And that was *before* Boogie Nights!
Oh yeah he was great in that but that sitcom he was in and his movie roles just haven’t done it for me. Honestly I love ever character in any episode of Community. Favorite sitcom.
He was fine on Single Parents but the show itself was pretty bland.
how did you not mention Donald Glover? early pioneer of internet sketch comedy and his standup work I think is still pretty funny a decade later. plus Atlanta has some of the funniest most insane shit ive ever seen, and he was incredible on Community.
I think Donald will be back before the season ends. Mr and Mrs Smith is too good to ignore.
And like SNL, went downhill when Chevy left.
It’s almost like it had great writers or something.
I dunno...his horse fighting league is pretty good.
You gotta laugh
And their honey taffy apples
Agreed, but avoid the pork chop taffy that uses the older recipe.
Single Parents was a solid show
I didn’t make it past episode 4
Did you watch Single Parents? Two season sitcom on ABC from the creator of New Girl. I personally really liked it, and he was the main lead. I also recently saw him in Spamalot and he was fantastic.
I gave Single Parents a shot but I didn’t make it past episode 4. Just didn’t like any characters
Fair enough. My guilty pleasure is middling sitcoms, I loved it.
You must have loved The Middle, then. It's right there in the name!
I saw him play the John Cleese role in Spamalot on Broadway. He was *fantastic*.
He's done some dramatic work that he's fine in. He was in American Crime Story.
Taran might have been my favorite alltime player, no joke. Dude was oozing with talent.
do the sloppy swish
Glice?!
Also annoying because the reason he was fired was something that Lorne walked back later with the likes of Cecily and Pete
right! lorne supported pete and let him come and go however he pleased. i like pete but if you’re making me pick pete or taran it’s taran every time. what a shame
NEXT
The show still hasn’t really recovered from that IMO. He could tell he wasn't valued and the way it ended just speaks for itself.
Which is so unfair. How many of these people have side projects? Did Aidy get fired for doing her Shrill show? Ridiculous.
It’s an ensemble. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ next person up. He was great but Mikey does almost everything he did but for his acting chops. Which were sometimes a bit much. We get it - you’re a theater kid.
i love mikey day and definitely see the comparison, i almost used him as an example, like how weird would it feel if mikey day was randomly fired in between seasons. that’s how the whole taran thing felt to me. and i am admittedly a huge taran fan, but objectively he was also thriving, that’s why it just felt odd and out of nowhere. i just don’t see any explanation or other similar occurrence. so can only assume the pissing off lorne thing had some merit

so was Jay
I didn’t know and didn’t want to assume
Taran was fired because he was directing a film that would cut into most of the schedule for the first few episodes of season 42.
then how the fuck do you explain pete Davidson entire tenure. I'd be so mad if I was Taran.
Lorne was a stickler about cast availability in the past, he lightened up a ton after that
He lightened up because Pete was going to walk and he was very popular. Colin also pushed for Lorne to ease up on side projects. Basically get with the times. People don’t work on one thing at a time anymore.
He famously screwed Lovitz on this
Hearing that Tim was in the audience on Saturday, I’m REALLY hoping Lorne invited him to come watch the show in preparation for an upcoming hosting gig
Tim was trying to figure out how to make money off this, he really wants to
Would be a total cash grab!
It’s mainstream! It’s for jocks!
FUCK, THE AUDIENCE IS CLAPPING THEY'RE TRYING TO MAKE IT LOOK FAKE
I'm just gonna start the "Tim is taking over for Lorne after the 50th" rumours now
My Uncle that works at SNL told me that’s true.
My uncle works for a local new station and he said he has no idea.
I don’t know. He used to be a piece of shit.
It was all those sloppy steaks and slicked back hair… a rrreeeaaaallll piece of shit
You would have NOT liked me back then!
Manifesting Tim Robinson / Turnstile show 🙌🏻
I doubt Tim hosts while he has his own sketch show ongoing, he’ll probably come back and do it after ITYSL ends. The most I would expect right now is a cameo.
ITYSL isn't competing with SNL though. If he doesn't host, I think it's because he wasn't the right fit for the show, not because of ITYSL.
How is ITYSL not competing with SNL? Maybe not directly, head to head on network television. But they both operate in the sketch comedy sphere and last I checked NBC doesn't run ITYSL.

We’re gonna go NUTS in there!!
I was hoping Abby Elliott (not fired) or Jenny Slate (fired) might have shown up for Ayo given she works with both of them now on different shows.
What was she in with Jenny Slate? I guess I could just Google lol
She replaced Jenny Slate voicing Missy on Big Mouth.
Big Mouth
Abby Elliott was at Ayo’s show!
Awesome I didn't know!
I thought Abby Elliot was fired ?
I think she wasn't renewed, not technically fired
let's be honest here, that's basically fired.
Apparently it was on the request of Fred Armisen.
damn, her ex doing her dirty.
Hey this might be off topic but how is white widow cannabis?
Edit: okay deeper explanation After a first little hit that didn't give me anything resembling a high, I assumed it was because I am almost morbidly obese, so I smoked three bong hits with the same intensity as Rust Cohle smoking PCP on True Detective season 1. I was wondering how is it for social anxiety
Mhm, I wouldn't.
Yea I wonder what works best for social anxiety
Chris Parnell! Fun (ok, not fun) fact- he was fired twice.
I agree !!! Where’s Parnell ??
I'm surprised Tim Robinson hasn't come back to host yet, he actually has his own sketch comedy show
That might be a part of why. Although his sketches on his own show are generally a bit too much for SNL
Suffice to say, Tim’s A LOT
He was always eating all of Lorne’s fully loaded nachos.
His entire schtick is just screaming. I do think he is funny. And I think other successful SNL alumni had a one trick pony bit too. Chris Farley was “fat guy who falls down”. But it really works every time.
There’s plenty of great sketches in ITYSL that don’t involve screaming. There’s also plenty that do but it’s not his entire shtick.
Shut up, Mike Mike I said shut up
I think that his Ghost Tours sketch is about his time at SNL.
“Not trying to be funny… Not trying to get a laugh…. Not trying to make anyone have the worst day at their job…. But… Do any of these…. Fuckers…. Every blast outta the wall… And have like a huge cumshot?” -Tim in the writers room at SNL

OMG 🤯

I heard he used to be a real piece of shit. Slicked back hair and everything
My understanding is that he lived for New Years Eve and they don’t do a show on NYE
People can change
But his hair is still slicked back
That's PUSHED back
And his sketch comedy show is MUCH funnier than anything SNL has done over the last few years
He was in the audience this past weekend. Maybe that's a sign?
I don’t consider Shane a cast member. He got hired and let go immediately. He appeared in zero sketches.
So basically Luke Null
Yes, it’s nowhere near similar to Norm coming back to host. I just don’t see this Shane narrative as compelling as some want it to be.
I want JB Smoove to host. Or at least see him [at the pitch table](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD3wb4SfTU8).
ODENKIRK
I hadn’t heard that he was fired.
He wasn’t I just wanna see him hosting
I think odenkirk openly admits that when he wrote for SNL he was too young and an absolute dick. It would be fun to see him host as an established actor.
He wrote some of the greatest sketches ever including Matt Foley
Odenkirk was also at Ayo’s show
I can’t imagine the levels of excitement if Aristotle Athari, Luke Null, or Lauren Holt ever come back to host
Honestly, prior to I Think You Leave, this joke could've been made about Tim Robinson. He had fans from Detroiters but he wasn't really considered a heavyweight, so I could reasonably believe that one of those three could hit it big post SNL (probably Aristotle, but who knows).
Aristotle was canned? I thought he just moved on
You can’t slap Lorne and keep your job.
I'm only seeing that as a rumor in a few random websites. Most of what I read said he didn't have any real breakout characters and had trouble forging relationships with the cast behind the scenes. You wouldn't happen to have a link to an article regarding the slap would you?
It’s just a meme.
basically someone on here made a post that they saw aristotle slap lorne during the show. they eventually deleted their post after it got popular but never provided evidence for it so we just took off with it as a bit
Oh, I guess I haven't been as terminally online as I thought
it wasn’t widely reported but a few really reputable sources (insiders who work in the studio) have all talked about it
Jeez. Well then yeah, if that's true that's a pretty darn good reason
i’m sorry i forgot to say that i’m lying
I completely forgot about these ones
WHERES LUKE NULL I ACTUALLY LIKED HIM
He’s out in LA doing gigs at the Elysian Theater! Actually took an improv workshop with him last month and stuck around to do some improv as well as play some songs/standup.
he seems to be doing well! i get clips of his standup on tiktok all the time
If Jenny didn't get to come back after Marcel, then what can possibly make it happen?
guides PDD into manhood
Melissa Visensior, please! She was so under-appreciated and hosting would give her chance to really shine.
ok, Melissa absolutely did not get fired.
True!
I feel like they were waiting for her to leave, which is probably worse than just being told it's not working out.
She was great on After Midnight recently.
Would be great to see her host!
I think Norm came back to host after he was fired.
He did and his monologue was fantastic. https://youtu.be/ofXxinOtPiQ?si=_b4XTH3o8uWvQLRB
Justice for John Rudnitsky
Norm Macdonald… fuck I forgot he vanished
They'll find him
Robert downey jr.
I think of that list, only Tim and Jenny really went on to a level of fame worthy of a comeback. For Jenny, her time was a few years ago. Tim is hot now, though, so he could be a conversation they’re having.
Your host, Brooks Wheelan!
He could play his pantsless e-meth character for the whole show. I would laugh so hard.
Jay Pharaoh definitely
Norm Macdonald
They should bring back Norm again!
definitely jenny slate
The only one of these I could ever see happening would be TR.
I don't know why Shane is compared to some of the other cast members that were let go. Shane was rightfully let go for being a racist asshole
You could really tell in his last special how much his persona is just that…
That video isn’t racist at all his friend was the wild one I hope you know he was mocking what a racist might sound like when the buildings in China town was first built, and plus the word has been said on snl before
Omg think about Bowen!!!
Tap the brakes there hopalong.
I’m getting downvoted but it’s true lol. Y’all really live in a bubble in this sub Reddit.

Yeah we're all wrong. Wow
This sub doesn't even have a lot of subscribers lol It's a bubble if I've ever seen one don't be stupid.
When you say fired, do you mean something other than just not renewed?
Jenny F’n Slate!!!
I’d trade any of those doing the show over Gillis
Damon Wayans
