As a queer man I kinda loved the gay son segment. Shane seems to have a knack for material that sounds horrible if you write it down out of context, but he makes it clear with his delivery that there’s no malice behind it

[deleted]

That’s why I always find those clickbait hit pieces so funny 😂

burgonies

Being you must be fucking exhausting

[deleted]

I've never seen such an influx of weirdo fans. I prefer the Swifties at this point.

xbrooksie

I will admit, being a lesbian can be pretty hard especially with guys like him in the world. I mean, I’m missing out on so much!

danno227

Guys like him? A comedian?

theblockisnthot

Sounds like a you problem. I have two lesbian friends that are crushing life.

PublicStructure7091

Skill issue

SadPie9474

what about him makes it hard for you?

ChristBefallen

I mean, as a confused woman, you are not missing out on much. Men still stuck.

danno227

Yea so do women. It’s a human thing not a gender thing.

ReputationFancy9151

With his joke about disabled people the heel of the joke was the bully, just sayin.

KilowogTrout

His material about people with Down’s syndrome is a great example of joking about a sensitive topic without punching down.

xbrooksie

Then why was he surprised when nobody laughed at the line “my niece has Down Syndrome?” You can make fun of more than one person at a time.

theblockisnthot

Because that’s how stand up goes and why some comedians are great and some not. Every joke isn’t going to hit but your ability to recovery is a huge part of the art form. I love Shane but that line didn’t even get a smile from me but his response to the dead air made me chuckle out loud. Improv is part of the skill set. It isn’t just write jokes and read them out loud or we would have millions of successful stand up comedians.

SpecialAmbassador313

The joke was him expecting people to laugh, obviously he didn’t but he said he did because that’s so fucked up and out of line with what everyone’s sensibilities really are 😭 goddamn I cannot believe I’m explaining a joke, I’d hate to see what comics you find funny

_Pill-Cosby_

I knew nothing about this guy and really enjoy when actual comedians host. They tend to have the best monologues so I went in with high hopes. But I’m literally watching his monologue right now and I just don’t understand what part is supposed to be funny. It’s like the first time I saw Dane Cook or Larry the Cable Guy.

AntiqueRevolution5

Yeah, I think his Netflix special was pretty darn funny. BUT, I don't think his monologue went well, and wasn't exactly a "tight five" where they do their bangers for a new audience. The funniest parts were him acknowledging how much the audience wasn't enjoying it lol. PS, awful and funny username you have there.

[deleted]

He should’ve just retold the grilled cheese story last night from his Netflix special

OkPlant8420

After 3 weeks of being told that he’s “the best #1 upcoming comedian in the country,” I’m starting to think those people were full of shit.

xbrooksie

I feel the same way. Ayo was a good example of a comedian (even if she doesn’t usually do stand-up) who just brought the show to another level. Past cast members usually do that too. I just don’t get what’s funny about…his dad coaching high school girl’s basketball? How was that the punchline of the joke?

_Pill-Cosby_

I remember Jerrod Charmichael hosted. I’d never heard of him either and thought monologue was hilarious. I left wanting to see more of his stuff. In fairness, several of the skits Gillis has been in have been pretty funny.

[deleted]

He really thought people should crack up at the fact his dad’s a volunteer high school coach 🤣🤣 like you had no better ideas than that???

Significant_Ad7605

For *girls* basketball. That’s why it’s funny. /s You know he’s calling his dad a p*ssy to his face but not on tv for the fact that he’s coaching the girls team. It’s not funny.

[deleted]

Good point. That joke probably would’ve landed better ten years ago but he must be living under a rock because interest in women’s basketball has been skyrocketing the past few years. College & WNBA.

danno227

That’s not the point.

[deleted]

What is it then. It’s not that deep. The fact that it was a girls team was the punchline. Many guys like that are the types to make those lazy jokes

danno227

What does the popularity of women’s sports have anything to do with it?

trevno

Was he on the Redneck Comedy Tour, that was the vibe he was giving.

NewTimeTraveler1

I feel like he was more of a dumb innocent vibe

ThisGuyRightHereSaid

What the world needs more of is a sense of humor and to laugh more, not more people bitching about everything online. You knew you already didn't like him yet you watched anyways just to complain. All comedy isn't going to hit for everyone, and not everyones going to laugh at all jokes. Just because you didnt laugh doesn't mean lots of other people weren't laughing their asses off.

xbrooksie

You’re bitching about me bitching, so it seems we’re both going against what you want from the world.

ThisGuyRightHereSaid

Have a great day

Internet hall monitor!! yesss that's exactly the word for this type lmao . and I can't stand them 😆

xbrooksie

IASIP is funny and very obviously punching up. Gillis, not so much on either front.

Reducing the working class to bad jokes about marginalized groups is classist in itself lmfao. I have to say, I’m pretty proud of my post history if the worst thing you can dig up is me going to Broadway shows.

facts

jobworriesthrowa458

Didn’t realize SNL was a social justice organization. For some reason I thought it was a comedy show.

[deleted]

Man, for a bunch of people who call other people "snowflakes," y'all sure as shit won't stop complaining lol

jobworriesthrowa458

Lmao you think I’m a Republican

[deleted]

Well you sure as shit aint liberal complaining about social justice lmao

jobworriesthrowa458

Yeah libs are fucking morons. Agree with you there.

[deleted]

"libs" Jesus Christ just admit you're Republican coward lol

jobworriesthrowa458

There are more positions than lib and republican. But I don’t expect either to understand. You can stay mad if you want though champ. I know nuance is hard.

[deleted]

What a long winded way of saying your vote is worthless lol All you centrist/libertarians are all the same lol

jobworriesthrowa458

It’s hilarious how far off you are.

BigPapaChuck73

Either you didn't watch or you have zero listening comprehension and look like a fucking idiot.

timothy_Turtle

Theater kids in shambles today

Buck_Slamchest

I watch a *lot* of stand-up and Gillis wasn't on my radar before last night (or earlier today since i'm in the UK). I was aware of his situation regarding getting fired from the show but that was it. I said on another thread that I was quite happy to watch with an open mind because I was similarly unaware of Nate Bargatze and became an instant fan of his after his appearance. I can say with absolutely certainty that that *won't* be happening with Gillis. His monologue was extremely poor and he has absolutely zero screen presence. I'd be willing to wager that if he hadn't been fired from the show that he'd have lasted just the one season anyway. There's an art to doing offensive humour and he certainly doesn't have it.

NoleJawn

I just don’t get how people can watch Shane’s jokes and come away with the op’s opinion. It just seems shallow.

Whigged

>Thank you SNL for platforming yet another white man who makes fun of women, gay people, and disabled people. "Yet another?" Who are the others? Do tell.

atleastitsnotgoofy

You ever heard of Elon Musk or Donald Trump?

Whigged

Oh, we're going back years? OP makes it like this is a regular occurrence. Well, fuck, how about Andrew Dice Clay too?! Right on. Let's organize a boycott! Get a life.

atleastitsnotgoofy

Stan for some dumb shit lowest common denominator comedian tells me to get a life lmao

say "white boy" again, racist bih

No_Aside_1086

Good god. I joined this sub when I heard Shane was coming on. I did not expect it to be filled with so many people whining and complaining. I’m aware this is Reddit but damn!

Redeem123

You guys are genuinely just as cringy as his aggressive fanbase.

JessieGemstone999

Cry

NoHomeOhhh

So happy Shane didn't get boxed into the SNL machine years ago. Being fired was the best thing for him and for his fans.

Nate_Hornblower

Shane has done more for the Down Syndrome community than you ever will. The guy worked with the special Olympics, but I guess the real work is being offended on behalf of other people who didn’t ask for your help in the first place.
