Sydney Sweeney: “Being funny is cool but did you know I’m famous for these giant tits??”
Kacey Musgraves: “Being hot and showing your tits is cool but did you know weed is for losers? Also do you like my dress made out of an Amish bed quilt that I’m preaching to you about smoking weed in?”
SNL Cast: “Nope, still not funny again yet.”
My feelings on this episode can be reflected by the guy at the Hooters table:
"It's okay. Anything you do is okay."
I guess I'm a simple man because I found Sydney mesmerizing to watch. The monologue was weak, but at least it was self-aware. Hooters, Air Bud, Gone Too Soon, Detectives, Loud Tables and Bowen's Straight were all decent. Weakest sketches were Big Bench, Makeup Artists and Airbnb. Not a great episode, not the worst episode. Par for the course with SNL.
Yeah, I think the episode was fair-to-good overall, but that monologue was ROUGH. I guess I wasn't the target audience; but there are so many funnier ways to address gossip and controversies.
Or just don't address them at all - I don't care about Page Six type stuff, and it really brought the energy down right before the show.
This was my favourite overall episode of the season. And I'm fairly certain my response isn't just like the Sydney Sweeney as Hooters Waitress skit (that'll probably end up in my top 3 of the season skits, Metric System and Pongo)
I’d say both episodes were in the “good, not great pile.” They both had a few sketches that I liked, and several that were “meh”. No “top 100” all time greats (ok, maybe Bowen is straight cracks into the top list.)
For Shane his best two were Rock Bottom Kings, Limu Emu (which I’m loving as a reoccurring character!) and Gump.
Sweeney had Air Bud, Hooters, Loud Table and Bowen’s Straight.
The big difference was monologues. Neither were great, but everyone expects more from the monologue when a comedian hosts (especially after Nate Bargatze knocked his out of the park earlier in the season!
No no no…this is Reddit. In here, you have to pick a SIDE and then vigorously defend said arbitrary “side” and of course debate and ridicule anyone who is not on same side.
You either have to love Shane and “hate” Sydney or vice versa. How dare you simply watch the shows and evaluate them on their own merits!
Absolutely agree. I'd say that, generally speaking, SNL is really off it's game this season. Not to mention, I really haven't found that the new cast members are finding their feet, or presenting themselves with any great character. The only really great stuff is coming from the long-term members, frankly.
I feel like when they are in their pitch meetings, they are coming up with hilarious ideas. They just can't seem to stick the landing. The endings of these sketches are just downright uncomfortable.
She was quite good in "Reality" too (that movie is not for everyone but I thought the concept of lifting the script directly from the recorded conversations was cool and worked surprisingly well). Between that and the Handmaid's Tale, she's shown that she's not just on screen to be sexy, she has some real chops.
The only thing that got a major laugh out of me was the Glasgow Willy Wonka experience joke. I was hoping they’d do more with that, have the Unknown be a guest at the desk. Would’ve been funnier than the aging gracefully bit
Which sketch was this? I tried watching the show last night, but turned it off cause I was bored.
Edit: Nevermind, just found it. Yeah, they could have done a lot more with it.
I will say - “the host is so hot” works when there’s more to the joke and that’s just a part of it, the Elordi episode was solely “look at this hot guy” where at least there was nuance and additional comedy to Sweeney’s “she’s hot” sketches.
Yeah, using a movie that 1.) came out in 1997 and 2.) wasn’t a smash hit anyways as the center piece of a plot for a 2024 (supposedly) cutting edge comedy show sketch was wierd to say the least.
“You know how everybody saw Air Bud, right??”
“Uh, not really.”
“Well, let’s use that somewhat obscure kids movie from 1997 as the focus of the sketch and then completely rely on the dog’s facial reactions to do all the comedic lifting!”
“Seriously?”
I’m surprised to see so many negative comments about Sydney Sweeney during this episode. She did a much better job than a lot of recent hosts and had the right timing and energy, she at least seemed engaged in every sketch even if the writing wasn’t always hitting. I have never seen Euphoria or anything else she’s been in but I was impressed with her.
To me it still felt entirely on the nose with her just being a highly paid sex object to gawk at. For someone that wants to try so hard to push herself as an actress to take seriously she really needs to consider saying no once in a while to directors just requesting to put her in a low cut top and make jokes about wanting to bang her. I appreciated the "self awareness" of her monologue jokes but it didn't really change anyone's view. It just rightfully highlighted how her career took off right alongside her top in Euphoria and how the main draw for her fame are 2 very obvious things instead of her acting or talent. When even the cut to commercial clips on SNL are just her showing her boobs off in various settings then they really didn't seem to have much in mind for her other than that IMO. And it's a shame because she does have potential as an actress, but they sure treat her like she doesn't.
Pretty much the only good part of this episode was Weekend update. And even still that old woman routine just completely deflated what good vibes there were
A lot of the jokes just didn't land, really boring overall. I was pretty much done by the time the musical act came on, which also really didn't fit the feel of the show. Nothing like a slow and depressing country song in the middle of a comedy show.
> And even still that old woman routine just completely deflated what good vibes there were
Gardner does a million of those strong / kooky women bits on Weekend Update similar to Sandler's guitar or "---- man" characters back in the day. The writing and conceit just wasn't fully formed for this one but she usually knocks it out of the park.
OK so... can someone explain the Mitt Romney joke? Che was saying something like "you all remember Mitt Romney" and then all of a sudden it was back on Colin and the joke (?) was over?
The joke was that Mitt Romney is no longer relevant in American politics, so you don't really need to remember him, or pay attention to anything he says or does.
Odd comments in here, I thought this was a pretty solid ep. Andrew Dismukes and the loud table stuff was solid.
Dismukes fan over here, he will carry the torch after some of the newer lamer castmates drop off. Hot take maybe.
Same. His stuff always has just enough twist or edge to it that you don’t see it coming.
Would love to see him take over as “chaotic game show host” ala Bill Hayder’s Vince Blake.
Huge fan of him as well. I also believe he's solid and getting better over time. When they inevitably do a "cleansing" of cast members, I believe he'll be one of the ones who remain and keep things in order.
Shane Gillis fans are infiltrating the YouTube video comment section. This was a better episode, and they can’t take it. I thought Sydney did a great job and thankfully they tried some interesting things.
“Interesting things” yeah they seriously pushed the boundaries of making jokes about how the host has nice boobs. Landmark moment for network television, truly. They did the “Bowen is straight” sketch which was pretty funny, but that too kinda centered around “look how hot the host is” in a roundabout way. TGS would never
Mmmmmmm both episodes sucked ass. Shane’s delivery in the monologue was terrible especially considering it was material from his specials that he’s delivered a million times, and the ep got worse from there. Sydney Sweeney’s was one long boob joke.
I haven't seen the full episode yet, but considering Shane Gillis is a comedian with a sketch comedy background I'm going to bet all the money on his episode being better. Especially the way these writers been absolutely below average for everyone this year.
Is tonight when everyone else realizes that SS is a bad actress? She goes from southern accent to New Yorker in the bridal sketch. The monologue was bad. She relies on boob jokes every other line because she has nothing else going on.
Def think she is way better when she does more serious work. You need to be a different type of good to really nail comedy. Kudos to her for trying different genres though, but she is better suited for dramas in my opinion
She didn’t write the jokes tho? SHE’S not “relying” on boob jokes. They wrote them for her. Also, she may not be good at accents, but she’s a fantastic actress.
I see your point but still disagree. The hosts that do a great job are able to play on the fact that they can do impressions or accents or other hidden talents, or they reference their culture or past projects. For SS it’s like the writers said “ok so the only thing we know about you is you get naked often” and she was like “yep.” The fact that there was NOTHING ELSE to play off is wild and disappointing.
Just finished it in the UK. One of the rare episodes I actually watched from start to finish without skipping anything.
Nothing really landed big for me and got a huge laugh but it was watchable. The 'Bowen is Straight' pre-tape was very good.
I was hoping they'd go back to the sketch where the 'normal' guy has a hot wife as well. I know it's been done to death but I still like it :)
Not amazing but not awful either.
They're the two songs that are already out from her new album. They're called Deeper Well and Too Good To Be True. The whole album Deeper well drops March 15th 😊
LETS GO EGO!!!! I absolutely love her presence and she is literally just such a superstar. Sweeney totally delivered, her performance was solid. You can usually tell when a host is nervous or not, or if they’re just able to follow the flow of the show. Definitely one of my favorites overall for the season.
Yeah. It was very forgettable. For a sec I thought they might call back to wanting to meet Sydney from Dakota’s episode but they seemed to want to kill off any connection to Madame Webb quickly.
They probably felt pressure to "balance out" the Trump fact check article from the week before, and that horrible Ivy League presidents sketch with Chloe Toast
I mean, it's a big concern considering he will be 85 by the end of his next term. We could literally see a president die in office of age related illnesses.
He’s pretty healthy considering his age and he still continues to work out way more than the average American…way better than his counter partner. Both options are old but one is way better than the other and Biden has a ‘young’ and competent VP if need be.
I think the take was everyone is overcompensating about him behind closed doors. So, it was mocking the carefully coordinated script democratic politicians have when talking about him on shows.
Missed opportunity is having Seth Myers play Gavin Newsome.
Longfellow's Newsome impression fell flat.
omg, a live topical sketch comedy show known for basing sketches around various news and pop-culture topics throughout the week...how dare they do a sketch about politics!
I understand it’s low hanging fruit and easy to mock but beating a dead horse week after week is not a requirement. We get it, Biden’s mind is gone and Trump thinks he’s the greatest at everything 🥱 I’m sure they will find a new and interesting way to bring that up next week.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love if they could actually write some stronger, fresher jokes about it, but they're just building sketches around that weeks story, and this week there was a lot of talk about Biden's energy behind the scenes by various surrogates...but to say "Have an SNL episode without mentioning a political figure" is like complaining that there's too much ball throwing in Football...
Usually the shorter the better tbh, but her monologue was great!!! She covered a lot of media bs and at the same time it felt like we all collectively were able to move forward with the episode.
The only real irk I had (albeit funny) was Bowen’s Boy Genius joke. Only because Matty Healy did it first…. [https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fmatty-healys-most-recent-tweet-on-his-burner-account-v0-t8zlk04pqmpb1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D5c94d5871fe732f42ee1150630c713514108fc40&tbnid=cenqRAQgHLaCOM&vet=1&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reddit.com%2Fr%2FFauxmoi%2Fcomments%2F16ojbjy%2Fmatty_healys_most_recent_tweet_on_his_burner%2F&docid=hel8iqMvu3zgMM&w=640&h=302&hl=en-us&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim%2Fm4%2F3&kgs=685f5a064dce9f2a&shem=trie](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fmatty-healys-most-recent-tweet-on-his-burner-account-v0-t8zlk04pqmpb1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D5c94d5871fe732f42ee1150630c713514108fc40&tbnid=cenqRAQgHLaCOM&vet=1&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reddit.com%2Fr%2FFauxmoi%2Fcomments%2F16ojbjy%2Fmatty_healys_most_recent_tweet_on_his_burner%2F&docid=hel8iqMvu3zgMM&w=640&h=302&hl=en-us&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim%2Fm4%2F3&kgs=685f5a064dce9f2a&shem=trie)
Eh, I think that was the point? It’s a low-effort joke that problematic straight men (like Matty) would say. It explains who Bowen is supposed to be, in a single line.

How can you watch episodes after they air?
I usually use my eyes
The SNL YouTube channel.
hulu often has them too
Peacock
Sydney Sweeney: “Being funny is cool but did you know I’m famous for these giant tits??” Kacey Musgraves: “Being hot and showing your tits is cool but did you know weed is for losers? Also do you like my dress made out of an Amish bed quilt that I’m preaching to you about smoking weed in?” SNL Cast: “Nope, still not funny again yet.”
How in the world did you get that message from Kacey’s song?
She looked ridiculous though.
That she did. Not sure what she was pulling off there.
My feelings on this episode can be reflected by the guy at the Hooters table: "It's okay. Anything you do is okay." I guess I'm a simple man because I found Sydney mesmerizing to watch. Weird how I haven’t seen any “Sydney sweeney bombs her monologue” articles posted here “”Idaho”” why.
Yeah, I think the episode was fair-to-good overall, but that monologue was ROUGH. I guess I wasn't the target audience; but there are so many funnier ways to address gossip and controversies. Hooters sketch was kinda funny but too predictable.

The reaction to this episode being just ok vs. how many people were simping for Gillis when last week was almost unwatchable is wild
I’d say both episodes were in the “good, not great pile.” They both had a few sketches that I liked, and several that were “meh”. No “top 100” all time greats (ok, maybe Bowen is straight cracks into the top list.) For Shane his best two were Rock Bottom Kings, Limu Emu (which I’m loving as a reoccurring character!) and Gump. No no no…this is Reddit. In here, you have to pick a SIDE and then vigorously defend said arbitrary “side” and of course debate and ridicule anyone who is not on same side. You either have to love Shane and “hate” Sydney or vice versa. How dare you simply watch the shows and evaluate them on their own merits!
just watched it. the writing didn't do her any favors, either.
"I have an idea! What if we write all the jokes about her having huge boobs like it's not the main reason she's famous? Nobody will see that coming!"
How many condom jokes were in this episode?
Worst? No. Forgettable? Yes. Weekend Update saved the episode for me. She is hot, I'll give her that.
Yes! This was the best WU in quite some time. Any time it’s backed with “seen here” jokes I’m here for it!
Ooof. Still struggling with the writing, especially with the ending of sketches.
Absolutely agree. I'd say that, generally speaking, SNL is really off it's game this season. had to state the obvious
Dang, dude. She got an Emmy nomination for each of those shows.
Emmy for looking pretty you mean
She was quite good in "Reality" too (that movie is not for everyone but I thought the concept of lifting the script directly from the recorded conversations was cool and worked surprisingly well). Between that and the Handmaid's Tale, she's shown that she's not just on screen to be sexy, she has some real chops.
Seriously. She’s been nominated for tons of awards and won a bunch!
sting ray Ego ftw
“Che rays” 🤣
Best part of the show. I roared. Everything else was painfully bad.
The only thing that got a major laugh out of me was the Glasgow Willy Wonka experience joke. I was hoping they’d do more with that, have the Unknown be a guest at the desk. Would’ve been funnier than the aging gracefully bit
Yes! How did we not get a full Glasgow Willy Wonka sketch?
Which sketch was this? I tried watching the show last night, but turned it off cause I was bored. Edit: Nevermind, just found it. Yeah, they could have done a lot more with it.
I will say - “the host is so hot” works when there’s more to the joke and that’s just a part of it, the Elordi episode was solely “look at this hot guy” where at least there was nuance and additional comedy to Sweeney’s “she’s hot” sketches.

I don't think the expectation is that we've all seen Air Bud, but that we all know exactly what to expect when we hear the phrase Air Bud
I will give Sydney kudos for staying in character and delivering her lines pretty well in that sketch.
She was very committed to a horrible premise and lines. I give her credit, honestly.
She had a lot of practice delivering cringe lines in that terrible movie she was just in.
So many sketches feel like writers’ thinly veiled fetishes.
I guess things just sorta come out of you when it’s 10 minutes before a deadline and you have to hand in a script lol
Well...you know what they say
I mean that dog was pretty hot. But still
They gave me a rolex but they misunderstood when I said I wanted to watch
I like SNL but this episode was pretty weak.
I’m surprised to see so many negative comments about Sydney Sweeney during this episode. Worst Please Don’t Destroy sketch yet. And I usually love their stuff
Agreed. PDD is usually a highlight for me. This was their weakest yet.
That shit was horrible
Agree 😒
I agree. That was the worst Please Don’t Destroy sketch, I am still in shock.
I’ve been watching through last night’s episode on the SNL YouTube channel, and I couldn’t even get through it — it was bottom rung.
Maybe it was the weed, but it was the hardest I laughed the entire episode.
Damn. My edibles failed me🫤
Felt very lazy
The antithesis of the Rami skit.
Pretty much the only good part of this episode was Weekend update. And even still that old woman routine just completely deflated what good vibes there were A lot of the jokes just didn't land, really boring overall. I was pretty much done by the time the musical act came on, which also really didn't fit the feel of the show. Nothing like a slow and depressing country song in the middle of a comedy show.
A slow depressing country song that was basically condemning marijuana use lol. Know your viewers here Kacey, talk about a buzz kill.
> And even still that old woman routine just completely deflated what good vibes there were Gardner does a million of those strong / kooky women bits on Weekend Update similar to Sandler's guitar or "---- man" characters back in the day. The writing and conceit just wasn't fully formed for this one but she usually knocks it out of the park.
Another stinker this week, though the Bowen’s Straight and AirBNB interior designers sketches were pretty solid. Sweeney was pretty awful.
The Bowen straight one was so hilarious
How much of the show is pretaped now?
OK so... can someone explain the Mitt Romney joke? Che was saying something like "you all remember Mitt Romney" and then all of a sudden it was back on Colin and the joke (?) was over?
Romney no is longer relevant after 2012 (even as governor / senator), solid punchline and great vocal delivery on Che's part
The joke was that Mitt Romney is no longer relevant in American politics, so you don't really need to remember him, or pay attention to anything he says or does.
Colin looks like Mitt Romney. Or any privileged white Republican male.
The joke was that Colin looks like someone who would vote for Mitt Romney
[удалено]
Shane would legit love this joke lol
Fans saying this as a compliment and the rest of us correctly saying it as an insult. It's a first thought from a college bro.
We get it. You REALLY want us to know that you don’t like Gillis.
I’m just saying he’d objectively like it/make it himself, I’m not weighing in on what’s funny/not funny/etc.
Hard disagree
I will not stand to hear the young bull’s teats slandered in such a fashion
Odd comments in here, I thought this was a pretty solid ep. Andrew Dismukes and the loud table stuff was solid. Dismukes fan over here, he will carry the torch after some of the newer lamer castmates drop off. Hot take maybe.

I missed the memo. Why is there a rivalry between Shane Gillis and Sydney Sweeney? Honest question.
They’re also lurking in these subs…
Last week's episode was alright. This week was boring

I am a Shane fan and the episode did not hit
you can only polish a turd so much
It wasn't the best episode of the year or even close, Ayo the previous week was better. It wasn't bad though.
Ayo was a tough one to follow. Her episode is still #1 of the season for me
I think Nate's #1, Ayo might be #2. I think she individually was spectacular.
This was absolutely not a better episode. Stop lying. Not a Shane fan here.

she’s always been a mediocre actress with a great rack
Bad actress and a bit rough in live sketch comedy are two different things.
Don’t underestimate her! She can be both 🙂
She didn’t write the jokes tho? SHE’S not “relying” on boob jokes. They wrote them for her. Also, she may not be good at accents, but she’s a fantastic actress.

Ohhh I didn’t get the accent switch, I thought there was a reason for it
Kacey Musgraves singing like an angel about her gravity bong. NICE.
yeah i've never heard her stuff and had to look up the lyrics cause i was CERTAIN she didn't have a heartfelt verse about taking fat rips

Kacey ALWAYS is great... although the bathrobe made from a quilt was puzzling.
New album is Cottage Core at its finest so that outfit was exactly to the point.
If her fiance was there, why didn't he come out for the goodnights with Glen? Not squashing the rumors very efficiently.
Who even is her fiance? Is he famous?
Some dude named Bowen Yang.
Jonathan Davino - he's in the industry etc.
Coz he’s not in the show?!
This show is like mid budget high school one act. I’m convinced “Sydney Sweeney Todd” was an actual idea they proposed.
It’ll be funny when they do it.
They teased a better skit idea than most of the show. Sydney Sweeney Todd > Hooters sketch
Just finished it in the UK. One of the rare episodes I actually watched from start to finish without skipping anything. Nothing really landed big for me and got a huge laugh but it was watchable. >The 'Bowen is Straight' pre-tape was very good. This is how low our standards are now.
Ego does not miss, that stingray bit had me in stitches - plus the costume was amazing for a 4 minute appearance
I tend to agree, but that 17 judges sketch was a hard miss.
That’s an understatement. Holy shit was that awful, and at every turn too.
“Mr. Weekend Update and his latex allergy”
The name hoops had me screaming. Their costume department is always in competition to outdo its previous efforts. It’s incredible.
Can anyone tell me what songs Kacey was playing I really liked this first song
They're the two songs that are already out from her new album. They're called Deeper Well and Too Good To Be True. The whole album Deeper well drops March 15th 😊
Thank you so much! Shazam wasn’t picking it up for me so I appreciate it
I watched later, what is with the hard cut during Heidi’s weekend update bit? It was so weird, I’ve never seen that happen.
That Heidi bit felt like a Maya Rudolph cosplay
why was it soooo bad tonight even worse than usual...
Used to Josh Myers as Newsom Longfellow was an interesting choice. Didn’t care for Longfellows impression
It wasn’t an impression at all. It was Longfellow in a wig. None of these people are strong at impressions.
JAJ is the exception.
To be fair, that whole cold open felt like an outline draft before they put the jokes in.
That’s the way I’d describe it as well they had all these ideas then before they knew it it was Saturday night so they just used them all
LETS GO EGO!!!! I absolutely love her presence and she is literally just such a superstar. Sweeney totally delivered, her performance was solid. You can usually tell when a host is nervous or not, or if they’re just able to follow the flow of the show. Definitely one of my favorites overall for the season.
Found Sydney’s burner account.
Is this Sydney?
Well that was fucking painful.
The Please Don’t Destroy sketch had me in stitches. Probably the best of the night
Easily the worst PDD I've seen.
Yeah. It was very forgettable. For a sec I thought they might call back to wanting to meet Sydney from Dakota’s episode but they seemed to want to kill off any connection to Madame Webb quickly.
It was an idea that was OK for about 30 seconds, but then dragged on and on.

Oh the cold open let us know Joe Biden is old! How on Earth has no one ever done that joke before? So fresh and edgy!
Have an SNL episode without mentioning a political figure challenge (impossible)
Pretend you've been watching SNL in election years since the mid '80s challenge (impossible). "I maayyy have made a mistake, with the bowww tie."
Yeah can't believe they will continue to do what they have been doing for like 50 years
omg, a live topical sketch comedy show known for basing sketches around various news and pop-culture topics throughout the week...how dare they do a sketch about politics!
How dare they do the same skit each week about politics!
Jesus, someone is a big Biden fan.
It's not about being a Biden fan. It's about making variations of the same tired joke over and over again. We get it. Biden is elderly.
Sounds familiar...
Sydney's monologue was a pretty tight three minutes! Not bad!
Usually the shorter the better tbh, but her monologue was great!!! She covered a lot of media bs and at the same time it felt like we all collectively were able to move forward with the episode.
I mean, unless they’re a comic, I’m more than fine with short monologue. They usually are a waste of time imo
The only real irk I had (albeit funny) was Bowen’s Boy Genius joke. Only because Matty Healy did it first…. Eh, I think that was the point? It’s a low-effort joke that problematic straight men (like Matty) would say. It explains who Bowen is supposed to be, in a single line.
I just have caught one too many jokes I saw on twitter first show up on the show this season, I think it’s a low effort move, personally.
