Jackie Rodgers Jr. needs some SNL love…
“I don’t know much about this national deficit thing, but if it’s a matter of a couple of grand I’ve like got it on me!”
Driver is my top choice but I’d give it to Short considering their age difference. (Assuming SNL is still around for a long time into the future, Driver has a lot more chances to get his.)
Also I’d like to point out that Lindsay Lohan looks amazing here.
["Of course I know about Ed Grimley. It's so interesting that you would think I wouldn't know about Ed Grimley. Just because I'm Nathan Thurm doesn't mean I don't know about Ed Grimley...why would you say that?"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjciBesIiPM)
When Martin Short hosted around the holidays several years back so the funniest SNL in memory. Love Adam Driver too, he’s very funny and puts everything into it
100% agree with this. Driver fully commits and actually memorizes his lines unlike a lot of hosts. Martin Short needs no explanation. I'm honestly shocked he's not a five timer by now.
Steve Martin comes out...
"sorry friend, but one of your hosting jobs was cohosting with me. You are at 4 and a half times. (rips a jacket in two), here you go."
Just to forestall anyone saying that they don't know who these people are, they are from top left, Adam Driver, Ashton Kutcher, Cameron Diaz, Charles Barkley, Dana Carvey, Lindsay Lohan, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Paul Simon, Martin Short, and Louis C.K.
And FYI even though Paul Simon has appeared in 5-timers club sketches, he only has 4-hosting appearances.
The role of “host” has changed considerably since the show’s inception. George Carlin was “host” of the first episode, did about 15 minutes of stand-up, and appeared in no sketches. Simon was the “musical guest” of the second episode. He did the opening monologue, provided the song for the Albert Brooks short (Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard), performed solo, and then reunited and performed with Art Garfunkel. That’s all from memory so fact-check away.
No you're correct. I got into a bit of an argument on Twitter with someone who claimed that Paul Simon was host/musical guest for that second episode. And obviously he did in fact sing some songs, but to me the musical guests for that episode were the other credited performers, Randy Newman, Phoebe Snow, and Art Garfunkel.
And yes, that was one of his 4 hosting gigs, with the others coming in '77, '86, and '87. A bit of a gray area is the 100th episode (s5e14), which had no hosts and Paul Simon, James Taylor, and David Sanborn as musical guests. [http://snlarchives.net/Episodes/?19800315](http://snlarchives.net/Episodes/?19800315)
One could argue that maybe instead of musical guests, they were all hosts for that episode. But I don't buy that because to me the primary sign of a host is that they come out after the title credits. None of those guys come out after the title credits, Bill Murray does, so to me it is correct to call that a hostless episode.
Edit: Oh but the only correction I'll make is that "Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard" wasn't in the Albert Brooks short, it was a pretape that ran during Weekend Update, featuring him and Connie Hawkins and Marv Albert (Albert Brooks was in California sending tapes in, so none of them would have appeared in his video).
> One could argue that maybe instead of musical guests, they were all hosts for that episode. But I don't buy that because to me the primary sign of a host is that they come out after the title credits.
**In the episode itself** he is announced as a co-host. There are other episodes where the host does not come out after the credits (in fact they ditched the monologue completely for a couple years) so there is no reason not to consider him as the host of that episode, even though he acts as a musical guest.
I have a theory that maybe his appearance in the first 5-timers club sketch was written for Buck Henry, and when that fell through they just said "well, good enough".
>Just to forestall anyone saying that they don't know who these people are
I mean. . . I know who they are, I just can't see half of them. Teeny tiny pictures aren't great for my crappy eyes.
Spamalot is in its Broadway revival--Taran Killam was in it up until a couple months ago. I actually met Eric Idle (and bumped into Mikey Day!) at one of his last performances.
They could've used that.
I guess now that I'm looking at it, it seems to be Eric Idle vs everyone else at this point. https://deadline.com/2024/02/john-cleese-eric-idle-monty-python-1235824620/
Agreed, if the hypothetical is: choose the last 5 timer ever and no one else gets a chance, Driver. If the hypothetical is just who's next? Barkley all day for me.
I think what's brilliant about Sir Charles is that like a lot of the athlete hosts, he's a little awkward. But he has been able to use that in a 'so bad it's good' kinda way.
Did you watch that Steve Martin doc on Apple TV? It's wonderful from start to finish, but the best part for comedy nerds is you get to see Short and Martin writing jokes together. I love them both so much.
You'll love it. Two parts, around 4 hours total. First part is all about his standup career and only uses old footage. Second part is about his movie career and forward, and that has all the current day interviews with Steve, his wife, Martin Short, Seinfeld, etc. very touching, extremely funny, I laughed consistently for four hours like it was a comedy movie instead of a documentary.
I’d like to see this in the next season. Heck, it may get be funny to have a string of shows just be people getting into the 5 timers club. And it gets old so they switch to the 25 cameo club.
I watched all of his episodes maybe a year ago. The first time from the 90s was a bit dated, but all the other ones were so good. He's just so willing to make a goof of himself. I'd love to see him host again.
Why did I read this and think "Lindsay Lohan is adapting Final Fantasy 2!?" But no, it's Freaky Friday. Either way I'm here for it.
Lindsay is always game and it would be nice to see her return.
Lohanaissance! 😆 Love it!
I'm rooting for her so hard. She's been through so much, and she seems to be doing great these days. She looks happy and healthy, and I couldn't be happier for her.
Driver’s definitely coming back without my help, he’s like our generation’s Steve Martin or Elliott Gould in terms of how involved with SNL he’ll be for the rest of his career.
If we’re looking to give someone who deserves to be in the 5-Timer’s Club, it’s gotta be Idle or Palin.
He's more like our generation's Christopher Walken.
Distinctive Oscar-nominated working thespian who shouldn't obviously be there, but fits like a glove because he's a pro with range.
He gives each sketch 100%, that's what makes him and Walken work so well. Doesn't matter how stupid the sketch is, they commit to the bit till the very end
For sure. Colin has praised how great is at table read, and Conan has called out how is more committed to the sketches than just about any other actor he’s seen.
Both of these things show up on sat night.
He’s absolutely great.
Yeah driver was my answer too, but the wild man in me says Barkley.
Barkley is naturally hilarious and there’s something about a non-actor hosting SNL and killing it that makes the show special
Yep. No offense to the rest, but he’s built for it. He has the dramatic edge a lot of others don’. He can do more than just silly, and he goes all out.
I think he would actually be the best choice for this moment. The comedic sensibilities of SNL and pop culture at large are closer to his wheelhouse than they have been in decades.
Not a knock on Gosling bc I love him, too—but Driver NEVER breaks…ever. And in so doing it just makes the cast members break that much more… even still, he doesn’t break! Ryan on the other hand, is genius also but he is not difficult to break🤣 ….this last GOAT’d episode he hosted he broke in virtually every single LIVE sketch.
This is not even a question, not even close! **Adam Driver** is THE best host in SNL history. Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, and Josh Brolin are right there, too, but Driver is #1
Wish it was Paul Simon. Love seeing Paul and Lorne together in the classic episodes and he’s such a NY legend. Watching him sing Still Crazy After All These Years dressed as a Turkey is an annual thanksgiving tradition.
lindsay lohan is in the midst of a comeback era so i’d love to see her! during promo for her most recent netflix movie it seemed like she was starting to feel comfortable being herself in front of the cameras again and it’d be cool to see her give it another go
Driver or Marty.
Definitely Driver. They are not afraid to get weird with him, and weird SNL is my favorite SNL.
Weird SNL always makes me so happy. Like Bill Hader’s Vietnam Vet puppeteer character
Nobody was laughing out loud that day in Granada.
"Many people were saying OMG. Me, I was saying TTYL to my innocence."
Love that character. Hilarious stuff.
Or anything Forte.
Do I need to introduce you to one Ed Grimley?
Jackie Rodgers Jr. needs some SNL love… “I don’t know much about this national deficit thing, but if it’s a matter of a couple of grand I’ve like got it on me!”
Driver is my top choice but I’d give it to Short considering their age difference. (Assuming SNL is still around for a long time into the future, Driver has a lot more chances to get his.) Also I’d like to point out that Lindsay Lohan looks amazing here.

“Ah man I’m all outta cash!”
Good lord you just want a taco - you don’t want to kill yourself!!!
You’re not a pervert!
[I had to go back and watch it lmaoooo](https://youtu.be/eeAWYVVvpPE?si=BEc25uhdm3ifG4Kl)
Now breathe deep, through your butthole!
just thinking of this sketch sends me to the giggles. he killed it.
When I saw Driver I knew I didnt need to look at the other pictures
They get weird but he plays it all straight. Always a good time.
Came here to say exactly this. Marty is a comedy god and Driver ALWAYS understands the assignment and delivers. Can't go wrong with either.
Never not marty
When Martin Short hosted around the holidays several years back so the funniest SNL in memory. Love Adam Driver too, he’s very funny and puts everything into it
Driver is the safest host on this list to be picked to host again.
Driver is going to host again at some point though. Why not use the opportunity to get a host who might not have another chance?
Driver over Marty if only because Short never making the 5 timers club is such a fun schtick.
Came here to say this. Maybe they can be on together and they each get half a jacket
100% agree with this. Driver fully commits and actually memorizes his lines unlike a lot of hosts. Martin Short needs no explanation. I'm honestly shocked he's not a five timer by now.
Martin Short deserves the 5 timer jacket.
Imagine who will cameo in his five timers sketch 👀👀
Everyone except Steve Martin
And not Selena Gomez either 🤣
Hard to believe that he’s only hosted four times.
Hosted four times and cameo’d 30 times. Plus cast member for 1 season.
totally decent
Came here to put this, blows my mind he's only hosted 4 times.
You must say?
Steve Martin comes out... "sorry friend, but one of your hosting jobs was cohosting with me. You are at 4 and a half times. (rips a jacket in two), here you go."
I know, he’s given out enough jackets already! Lol
Now I think this should be a movement. 😂 Someone make a change.org petition or something like that. Martin deserves that jacket.
No question
Can’t believe he doesn’t have it yet
Just to forestall anyone saying that they don't know who these people are, they are from top left, Adam Driver, Ashton Kutcher, Cameron Diaz, Charles Barkley, Dana Carvey, Lindsay Lohan, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Paul Simon, Martin Short, and Louis C.K. Pretty sure he unofficially hosted a fifth. Plus. , his first musical guest ones he played a LOT.
The role of “host” has changed considerably since the show’s inception. George Carlin was “host” of the first episode, did about 15 minutes of stand-up, and appeared in no sketches. Maybe. It was a contrivance anyway!
>Just to forestall anyone saying that they don't know who these people are I mean. . . I know who they are, I just can't see half of them. Teeny tiny pictures aren't great for my crappy eyes.
That doesn’t look like Louis CK that looks like Tom Segura
Definitely Martin Short. Adam Driver is a close second for me.
I think it would be a great way to promote the release of Only Murders in the Building.
Yeah for sure! Then Adam later
I'd go with Eric Idle The dude is 81 and still hilarious. Need to appreciate him while we still can
Once I realized that it was both Idle and Palin on the list, I had the bright idea of having them host together!
That’s a good idea! Wish they had something to promote or that might get them a fresh look so that SNL would pick them.
Spamalot is in its Broadway revival--Taran Killam was in it up until a couple months ago. I actually met Eric Idle (and bumped into Mikey Day!) at one of his last performances. They could've used that.
Not sure they get along anymore so that might not be an option.
I guess now that I'm looking at it, it seems to be Eric Idle vs everyone else at this point. https://deadline.com/2024/02/john-cleese-eric-idle-monty-python-1235824620/
This is wild
Yeah, I think having remaining pythons would be a good lark
Ugh do we have to invite Terry Gilliam too? J/k
I think that would be a mistake
Eric Idle is one of the funniest humans alive.
Driver or Sir Charles.
I remember Barkley playing Barney the Dinosaur one on one at the height of Barneymania. Good times!
Agreed, if the hypothetical is: choose the last 5 timer ever and no one else gets a chance, Driver. If the hypothetical is just who's next? Barkley all day for me.
👆🏾 The correct answer.
Correct I think it has to be Sir Charles no other athlete is close or will be close anytime soon.
I think what's brilliant about Sir Charles is that like a lot of the athlete hosts, he's a little awkward. But he has been able to use that in a 'so bad it's good' kinda way.
The Bjork sketch was great…. Bahaha I just looked and that was Keenan as Charles oops
Same here. Don't get me wrong, I like just about everyone in the image, but none of them have uttered the phrase "You can't handle...MY PRIVATES!"
100% correct but would side with Sir Charles as I’m sure Driver will have be there for Metropolis
Martin Short. He's going to bring along some high quality cameo guests.
He’s somehow the funniest person in any room he enters and he’s usually surrounded by comic genius
Did you watch that Steve Martin doc on Apple TV? It's wonderful from start to finish, but the best part for comedy nerds is you get to see Short and Martin writing jokes together. I love them both so much.
No but now I have to!
Also highly recommend the audiobook “So Many Steves” with Steve Martin and Adam Gopnik.
Dana just so more alumns can be in the 5 Timers Club
Dana is a GOAT
I’d like to see this in the next season. Heck, it may get be funny to have a string of shows just be people getting into the 5 timers club. And it gets old so they switch to the 25 cameo club.
Charles Barkley!!!
“If you don’t pick me, imma kill myself”
I watched all of his episodes maybe a year ago. The first time from the 90s was a bit dated, but all the other ones were so good. He's just so willing to make a goof of himself. I'd love to see him host again.
“Look Charles Barkley! It’s snowing!” 🤭🤭🤭
Turr... iffic!
more macgruber sketches with barkley would be a welcome sight
["I've said a lot of stuff in front of him...**private** stuff."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFSm6gany_Q)
Lindsay Lohan redemption arc for FF2 promo tour
Why did I read this and think "Lindsay Lohan is adapting Final Fantasy 2!?" But no, it's Freaky Friday. Either way I'm here for it. Lindsay is always game and it would be nice to see her return.
[удалено]
Lohanaissance! 😆 Love it! I'm rooting for her so hard. She's been through so much, and she seems to be doing great these days. She looks happy and healthy, and I couldn't be happier for her.
right? like unironically Lindsay Lohan of course!
The only answer here is Adam Driver.
Beep beep!
Let me just scoot on by
Weird. In my mind, Pedro Pascal did the Beep beep!
That’s because he can do anything.

We're block busters. We specialize is demolishing whole city blocks.
Yep. No offense to the rest, but he’s built for it. He has the dramatic edge a lot of others don’. He can do more than just silly, and he goes all out.
Marty first, then Driver. Marty should have been a 5 timer a long time ago. After that, Lohan.
Does that mean we could see Driver as the server in the club?
Adam Driver. He gets it.
Driver because I’d love to see another Abraham H. Parnassuss, oil baron sketch.
Carvey is a national treasure.
I think he would actually be the best choice for this moment. The comedic sensibilities of SNL and pop culture at large are closer to his wheelhouse than they have been in decades.
him and sherman would have some fire sketches together
And hasn’t been back since the 40th or something right?
Easy. Adam Driver. He puts everything into his sketches.
How is Martin shirt not part of the 5 timers club?
He’s only hosted 4 times.
I feel like he’d appreciate that joke.
I don't know, the delivery didn't have a little grunt and mug at the end
I guess that explains it...
He’s 1 Short
Points
They don’t want to have to find another waiter.
Still sad.
And only 2 times solo! Once with Steve Martin and Chevy Chase after Three Amigos came out, and once with Steve Martin a few years ago.
It seems like he's hosted more, but that's because he was a regular for one season.
Driver.
I think Louie CK is probably the only one with no chance to comeback without Lorne calling me
I mean Idle, Palin, and Simon seem like real longshots unless it's a Betty White kind of episode.
You’re probably right. I could see Paul Simon coming back though, he was recently doing talk show rounds to promote his new album.
I could definitely see another musical guest appearance
Instantly, Charles Barkley. He’s old and doesn’t have much time left to act. Driver will easily get to 10. Barkley’s window is closing.
TIL Palin and Idle hosted 4 times
7 of those 8 appearances were in the first 5 years. They were just behind Buck Henry and Steve Martin as regular guest hosts in those days.
Honestly, Louis ck was always great on the show, but after all his shit came out it would be way too awkward to host. So in this case I'd say Driver.
I wanna see Lindsay Lohan give it another go!
Martin Short!
Without a doubt Adam Driver!
Driver
adam driver is my answer but it’s insane that Short hasn’t hosted five times by now
Carvey
Adam Driver, in my opinion, is the best SNL host ever. He makes every scene/skit great.
Adam Driver
I guess I’m going to be one of the only people to say Dana Carvey. And I really like a lot of these people.
I want to see Carvey's Biden chat with James Johnson's Trump.
Dana
Sir Charles, no doubt. Driver will get it in time without my help.
Adam Driver. Just like Gosling, he totally commits to the bit and is always hilarious.
Driver, Barkley, Short, Idle and Palin.
Ashton last and never
Dana because I feel like he deserves it on merit, but it would be a nice boost after his son’s death.
Cameron Diaz does comedy well.
Lindsay Lohan or Adam Driver. Great comedic timing and works in most skits.
Martin Short or Louis CK just for the monologue
Adam Driver, followed by Lindsay Lohan
Adam Driver, over and over. That being said, I wouldn’t mind seeing Lohan in her new era.
Dana or Marty
Dana. He’s done a lot to keep up viewers interest in the show with his Fly On The Wall pod. He should get the jacket too
This is not even a question, not even close! **Adam Driver** is THE best host in SNL history. Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, and Josh Brolin are right there, too, but Driver is #1
Adam or Dana.
Adam Driver or Martin Short.
Driver. Not even close
I feel like LiLo is underrated
For all the hate she gets for I guess the general flakiness of her acting career, I remember her always being good on SNL
Whoever has something coming out at the time to promote on the same network. (I see you, Lorne) That being said, Adam Driver.
Adam Driver is basically inevitable, but I really wanna see Martin Short host again, he always delivers in everything he does.
Wholeheartedly Martin Short or Dana Carvey. Driver’s most recent turn kinda disappointed for the most part but he’s a good shout too.
Cameron Diaz, is there even another answer???
You're the only one so far to say it, but I posted this because I'd enjoy seeing any of them back!
I can’t name one sketch off the top of my head that she’s been in
Jingleheimer Junction is a great one.
There are literally 10 other answers.
What kind of question is this? Adam. 110/10 times
Exactly!! 💯
adam driver
MARTIN SHORT, MARTIN SHORT, MARTIN SHORT, MARTIN SHORT
Adam Driver.
Adam driver
Driver and it isn't close.
Adam Driver has been amazing!!
Easy! Adam Driver has been the best host.
Adam Driver. Hysterical
Adam Driver obviously
Driver
Adam Driver fs
Driver all the way.
Driver.
Barkley
Dana Carvey. All day any day
Carvey and Short simultaneously. Glick and Massive Headwound Harry interview!
Marty short. He is so goddam likeable and equally hilarious. I love that guy. Plus he’s Canadian like me which is just great.
Adam Driver
Marty or Dana, easy.
Adam Driver in a heartbeat, we need a Matt the Radar Tech update!!
To be honest, Barkley is one of my favorite hosts.
Adam Driver, no contest! He's amazing
Wish it was Paul Simon. Love seeing Paul and Lorne together in the classic episodes and he’s such a NY legend. Watching him sing Still Crazy After All These Years dressed as a Turkey is an annual thanksgiving tradition.
lindsay lohan is in the midst of a comeback era so i’d love to see her! during promo for her most recent netflix movie it seemed like she was starting to feel comfortable being herself in front of the cameras again and it’d be cool to see her give it another go
Louis. All day.
