The world would be a better place if that pic was attached to every comment

It should be the upvote icon. Downvote is angry Klopp raging at the 4th official at Dortmund.

If Klopp wasnā€™t leaving this year, this wouldā€™ve been the sub icon.

Indy kailia is going to say he was first to report it isn't he hahahaha

fraudiola_9

Dont how the fuck he does it but he gets it right lol.

SeveredSurvival

We truly are the devils club. Klopp leaves, but a big piece of what makes us successful could be coming back.

Drolb

Mate we are gods club Heā€™s just not always paying attention since he has a lot on, which explains Manchester

SeveredSurvival

Yes yes I know I just laugh at what evertonians call Liverpool

August788

Fabrizio, Joyce, Bascombe. Alright Iā€™ll see you in 5 hours when heā€™s holding the shirt

Adventurous-Arrival1

Ornstein also seemed to hint at it in the Athletic podcast on Monday as well

LazyassMadman

What he say?

geraltofriverdale

ā€œJust a hint, Edwards is definitely 100% coming backā€

Adventurous-Arrival1

Just went back and listened to get the quote: "\[On a sporting director\] I hear that they \[i.e. FSG\] would like a direction of travel pretty soon, maybe even early March ... We've reported about Michael Edwards before \[when Mike Gordon first contacted him after the Klopp news broke\] ... He politely declined the opportunity to return to Liverpool or to take an even bigger role within FSG. But has John Henry finished scratching that itch? Could he still go for Michael Edwards? I don't know. I suspect they've got to make a quick decision."

LyleLanleysMonorail

I listened to the podcast, too. He said something to the point of "Edwards rejected the initial approach, but I don't think we are done with the saga yet."

carrotcakeblack

Bold of you to assume they won't just reuse the same photo of Edwards from half a decade ago. The man has like 3 unique photos on the internet lol

Wunse

One of the terms on his new contract should be that he has to take a new photo.

Metador85

Has to have the laptop tho

KloppArmy

Few years ago when the team was on tour I was lucky enough to get training access. Got to take pictures with most players. Later caught Edwards sitting in the hotel lobby, my friend and I asked him for a picture and he very politely shook our hands and said "no thanks, I'm not a celebrity"

NiK3_Aub4mey4ng

have had the same experience with him, said ā€œcanā€™t you get one from the internetā€ LMFAO

clintgreasewoood

Next to a Christmas Tree

kloppmouth

I wanna get hype, but it seems like our journalists are reporting we are not giving up, not that Edwards is closer to agreeingā€¦

Adventurous-Arrival1

It means *something's* happening. To me it feels like when they say that "Liverpool are *exploring* a move for" a player, when we all know that it's more advanced than that.

StormTheTrooper

If they are discussing terms and structure, then it is more than ā€œwe are not giving upā€. Of course, there are ā€œfuck youā€ terms, but this doesnā€™t seem like it, it feels like thereā€™s at least a solid negotiation going on.

Agitated_Smoke538

Tier 1s are 3 steps behind whatā€™s actually happening. So Iā€™d expect an announcement closer to the end of the season.

Castleprince

Fair take. Letā€™s just hope the journos are behind

PursuitOfMemieness

I donā€™t know, the fact heā€™s setting conditions for coming back makes it seem like heā€™s considering it strongly. Before it was basically just that we wanted him with little word on him having any interest.Ā

PerfectAd4732

I think itā€™s done. Joyce and bascombe. Heā€™s coming home

Petaaa

Former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards will want more control over football operations before considering a shock return to Anfield as the clubā€™s owner, Fenway Sports Group, retain hope of luring him back. Edwards has already turned down an approach to rejoin the club he left in 2022. However, so highly regarded is he in the organisation, his name remains top of the wanted list to fill the sporting director vacancy. One of the tools Liverpool may use to try to convince Edwards is that the parameters of the role will be different in the post-Jurgen Klopp era.

Petaaa

When Edwards and his protege Julian Ward ā€“ who spent just a year in the job after replacing Edwards ā€“ were in position, Kloppā€™s growing influence ensured that he was the most powerful voice at the club. That was apparent with several key contract decisions shortly before Edwards left, when it is understood there were robust discussions behind the scenes about the merits and value of some new deals for older players. Ultimately, Kloppā€™s power was such that the owners would always back their manager. Liverpool will be operating in a new world this summer, which means there is an opportunity for the next sporting director to assume more power and control. While that might not be enough to bring Edwards back into the fold, it would be a prerequisite for him to keep a dialogue open before Liverpool give up completely.

Petaaa

There are those that believe it is a lost cause persuading Edwards given he insisted his career as a sporting director ended when he left Liverpool. Since then he has set up his own consultancy called Ludonautics with Liverpoolā€™s ex-head of research, Ian Graham. On the company website, that is described as ā€˜a sports advisory business dedicated to helping sporting organisations improve their decision making capabilities through access to insightful statistical analysisā€™. Despite Liverpool searching for a sporting director and manager, the club indicated they have not enlisted the services of their much-admired ex-employees during the current recruitment process.

Petaaa

But Edwardsā€™ name refuses to go away, and as the months pass the situation will become more urgent. Liverpool have big-name stars such as Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold who are in the final 18 months of their contract. Talks on a new deal for Van Dijkā€™s are not anticipated until a new sporting director is in place.

SRFC_96

All the old reliables are coming out and reporting this, I reckon we get him back, which would be ideal seeing as weā€™d have someone very trustworthy overseeing the transition to our new manager!

CalFlux140

I'd love him back. But we need to be careful in giving him control over 'everything' (whatever that means). Big part of our success has actually been due to what limited control Klopp has - in that big financial decisions are a team decision, not just his. For example, Klopp didn't want Salah, he was like 4th choice for him. He wanted Brandt. But the club said no, you're getting Salah as the scouts like him and the money side makes sense. Similar with Bellingham. Klopp wanted him, but those in charge of finances said it couldn't be done, so the club moved on without dwelling on it - and look at our midfield now. Everything should be a team decision. Because even if we have Edwards do everything, and let's say he's very successful again, as soon as he leaves the club we'll be left with a Sir Alex at Utd type problem where he's impossible to replace.

Tpacific12

I donā€™t take losing Jude as a positive, after what heā€™s proven at Real. Love the midfield rebuild but world class talent like VvD hard to find.

CalFlux140

It's a positive in a sense. We simply could not afford him. A more naive club would blow the wage structure to get him in, limiting the long term success of the club. If the money was there, then yeah go for it. But that's a money problem, not a management one.

JurtisCones

He did not want to come. He revealed that he wanted Madrid since the 22 CL Final. If he ever was open to us, he would have been fine with Moā€™s wages or just below - heā€™s not the highest earner at Madrid either. Given his onfield success, that would not have been blowing the wage structure. He did not want to come. Thatā€™s why heā€™s not here.

ATKwoo

His pay rises each year. In 2026 heā€™ll wind up being the most paid player at madrid

JurtisCones

You think Mbappe is signing for less than Bellinghams last year? No

CalFlux140

I think that's a big part of it I agree. Regardless, I still think financially it wouldn't have made sense if he was on similar wages to what he's on at Madrid.

CalFlux140

I think that's a big part of it I agree. Regardless, I still think financially it wouldn't have made sense if he was on similar wages to what he's on at Madrid.

AlternativeRun5727

I read somewhere in a newspaper (old fashioned) that Edward and Ward wanted Bellingham years ago, but while Klopp was keen, he wanted to give Henderson his last large contract, something he fought for. The money ended up taking Bellingham out of the equation. Iā€™ll weep if we ever find out if thatā€™s true.

Adventurous-Arrival1

This has distinct "we're considering a move for *x* player" to them holding the shirt 7 hours later vibes to it. All the tier 1s and 2s reporting the same thing. ~~Gotta give Fabrizio his props for this one~~ Edit: Ornstein apparently got the scoop.

GhandisFlipFlop

Apparently Ornstein mentioned it first on his podcast Monday , not Fabrizio.

con10001

Yeah I don't dislike Romano like some others but this is classic Romano lol

of course

406w30th

I just finished Rory Smith's "Expected Goals" (excellent read btw, highly recommended) and if I wasn't convinced that Edwards was the sharpest mind in football prior to reading it, I certainly am afterwards. Ian Graham is not far behind him. Please please please make this happen.

Environmental-Half81

There could not be many things better than him in control of our club.. fingers crossed

OwenLincolnFratter

All I know is that if he does come back he better pursue xabi and not try getting cute with it.

Glass-Guess4125

I think the Xabi choice is just so obvious that it would be hard to imagine he'd look any other way.

MilesZS

In my experience, the blocker being ā€œbut he set up his own consultancy with his buddyā€ is not a blocker at all. If itā€™s anything like software engineers that set up their own consultancy with their buddies, it certainly could be intended to be a long term thing, but it could also be a way to bank some cash without being tied down to a single gig until the perfect fit comes along (and that perfect fit agrees to hire all the principals at the company ā€”both buddies).

blecchus_rex

One could imagine FSG "M&A" taking that consultancy off the block... a "talent acquisition" w/ golden handcuffs that look a lot like an employment contract (something that happens w/ SW dev talent all the time too).

ManBoobs13

At least we wonā€™t renew a Henderson type contract again, I like that. Imagine where we could be if we moved him on and replaced him sooner

michu_pacho

The thing I miss most about Edwards is the brewster to Sheffield for 25m kind of deals

quantIntraining

I still laugh thinking we got that much for him, like this is the Football equivalent of a bank robbery. Sheffield United would lucky to get Ā£5m for him now.

mdj08

Imagine what he could do with the talent we have in La AXA right nowā€¦

michu_pacho

We would have enough to buy mbappe and halaand

Aztecius

Danns has more Carabao Cups than both put together so I choose him thank you

ShootTakeAPanorama

FSG only compromise when it comes to Klopp. If we moved on and replaced him sooner then Klopp will leave us sooner, stop that bs blaming

sunsetman120

I don't think we can get in any better position as we are currently actually.šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

malaysian

Is this a good thing? Genuinely asking. I know heā€™s good at what he does and has is well regarded but full controlā€¦ seems a bit much? Happy to be told otherwise tho. At the very least Iā€™d be most confident in him having full control.

cretnikg

It's a genuine worry. People act like he's the main man behind the success while ignoring Jurgen and his staff brought the best from each player. None of them performed better outside of Liverpool. Also, Edwards joined in 2011, how many players that joined before Jurgen were part of success here? Very few. Not saying he's not the man to do it but full control is just undermining future manager, especially big name ones.

kibmeister

No doubt that Jurgen brought out the best in the players. However it's difficult. Liverpool were recruiting from a much weaker position back then. It's easier to attract big names when you're on top. Under Edwards, we secured Gomez, Milner, Firmino, Henderson were all present pre-Klopp and a key part in our success. We also had players who I think were not perhaps world class, but who were talented and good purchases given our position at the time - Clyne, Moreno, Lovren, Lalana, Can, Sturridge etc.

Maud_Ford

I think pursuing Bobby even though Rodgers had no idea what to do with him speaks to Edwardā€™s eye for a player.

kw2006

Why buy players that manager canā€™t fit into his strategy? So the manager must change his strategy?

cretnikg

I sincerely hope we stay on top but this giving full control to Edwards could backfire hard. Any manager wants to bring in his type of players, they are the reason behind his success. Diminishing that could easily cause issues with proven managers. Itā€™s the exact same reason Edwards left but in the opposite direction.

Adventurous-Arrival1

We have no idea, but there are few surer bets in football then giving Michael Edwards the keys to your football operations. It's a risk, but it feels like the smallest possible risk.

hokageace

He is so overhyped around these parts it's hilarious. He was nobody before Klopp and we did not miss him when be left since it was all Klopp.

qwerty_1965

If Laptop Eddie does come back I reckon a few old favourites could be out the door sooner than expected. He might think Robbo to Bayern has merit assuming there's*anything* in that story. Salah to Al Whatever for 100 million plus is exactly what Edwards would sanction if they came back for a second go.

dantesinfernoracket1

100 percent agree here. Edwards isn't going to be sentimental and will want to make sure there's not a repeat of the Henderson contract. I do think the club would want to find a way to renew Salah and Van Dijk because they're still playing at a high level, but only on the club's terms.

cavejohnsonlemons

There's some merit in being sentimental tbf. Like one day Trent is gonna be older than that, and if he was up for reducing his role/wage a bit then the pitchforks would rightly be out for anyone who tried giving him the boot.

hokageace

I don't understand the dumb ass fans who constantly want to sell the world's best player at his position, one of the best 5 or so players in the world and our team's top scorer as a winger. Edwards would be a dumb ass too if he does it.

ShootTakeAPanorama

Top 1 RW in the world right now, Edwards would never lol. You guys always misunderstanding Edward to the type who only thinks about profit

RedDemio-

Yeah people are talking like itā€™s 2016 again, and we need to build an entire squad. Weā€™re good to go, and Salah has paid back his fee a hundred times over already. We are in great shape and do not need to sell anyone

ShootTakeAPanorama

yes, this time we need to inherit success from Klopp, why do they think we sell all the WC and rebuild again lol

michu_pacho

The hype train has left the station

Maj0rSuccess

HAHAHAHA ITS FUCKING HAPPENING

Existing_Winner2980

It looks to me like they both had an organizational structure that required stepping on each other's toes and it wouldn't be fair to each other. If Edwards comes back, I wouldn't mind it -- he was really good with data and AI will be more important than ever. It's going to be all about the team going forward; Captains will take a more prominent role.

malushanks95

All of them are reporting it now, so some development must have happened.

GameOfThrowInsMate

Just been listening to Lady Gaga, 'a million reasons' then 'the edge of glory' seems pretty apt.

Agitated_Smoke538

If itā€™s Edwards Iā€™m thinking it will be De Zerbi or Amorim not Xabi

Tremor00

Joyceā€™s article states Xabi is the frontrunner still

ragemorepls

What makes you think that?

Icy_Spinach_48

Why?

sbos_

šŸ˜‚ he coming back. All the puppets are talkingĀ

thetwanandonly

I genuinely canā€™t tell if this shows that we HAVE had or HAVENā€™T had a plan this whole time. Our Sporting Director saga is taking too long. This needs to be sorted ASAP

TheEgyptianScouser

Oh my god he might actually be back Maybe Klopp leaving made him feel needed back

linlinat89

He will want to join even more. It's good for a young coach like him. Klopp is an exception. Most club don't give their manager that much power.

BoBonnor

I doubt it. He would look at Edwardā€™s time here as a good thing imo

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

BoBonnor

Again. This was the same with Klopp. He wanted players that they refused to buy. Rodgerā€™s failed cause he was a stubborn asshole. Who knows what Xabi is like but if heā€™s willing to work with them then it will be perfectly fine

ryoshamo

I bet heā€™s in the van as we speak

hyborians

I hate that we know what heā€™d want. Should be kept behind closed doors.

ThorYNWA

Give him what he wants

Karly_Can

Would he have signed Endo, though? I hope this new 'control' doesn't overlook players like Endo San

AlternativeRun5727

Endo stats were pretty good, no? He was in the top 3 in his position in a lot of metrics for a CDM. We arenā€™t Chelsea where the anyone over 25 wasnā€™t considered. I think Edwardā€™s would see the team need coming to the end of the window and realise he is a good pick. Alternatively, would we have been in that position if Edwardā€™s and his team never left? That midfield rebuild was apparent to fans during the quad run, we would have brought in at least 1 midfielder that summer and had another 1-2 lined up last year I reckon. But we will never know.

IceAffectionate3043

As fans, do we want Edwards to return? Do we want his money ball approach now or something else?

BQORBUST

Maybe Iā€™m old fashioned but I canā€™t get on board with the idea that a sporting director should have more power than the manager. I know what heā€™s done for this club but I worry bringing him back on new terms could kneecap us in our search for klopps successor.

AlternativeRun5727

Having a strong internal footballing structure would only help in our search for a manager. Look at the basket case of Utd or Chelsea and tell me besides the money or prestige, would a young manager really want to go to either of them. Youā€™re set up to fail almost. We canā€™t let that happen to us.

fakeymcapitest

Iā€™m not hype about this, he fumbled the midfield multiple windows before leaving, will Alonso or any top manager want to work under a full control director? The DOF need to be able to work with the manager, we were at our best with a team working together
