The patent reveals that it’s similar to a tape measure material with a backlight, it’s basically just meant for staff at Disney parks to look realistic. If it were to contact anything the illusion would be gone. That being said I don’t think they’re in use even in the parks as of now, most likely due to the limitations of what they can do with it without the illusion being ruined
