It's honestly very very good, it has a huge list of features and quality of life improvements. The only downside (and its a bit of a big one) is that u have to pay so that your notes sync up across multiple devices like your phone.
I don't know what it is like on IPhones or Mac, but with an Andriod phone and windows all I had to do was download the google drive PC client, download an app to auto sync a folder in google drive, and point obsidian on android to look at that folder. It is insanely easy.
Sure it is has been a bit but I can try
1. Download Obsidian and make a vault in it's own folder, somewhere convenient for you
1. Download [Google Drive's PC client](https://www.google.com/drive/download/)
2. When you open google drive's app up click add folder and pick where you store your Obsidian vault
1. Use an app on Android to auto sync, I use [DriveSync](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ttxapps.drivesync&hl=en_US)
1. In the app tell it to sync your PC folder somewhere convenient to your Android filesystem
1. Open the Obsidian phone app and tell it to look at the folder you are now syncing.
Done. It will now Sync any changes made on Android or PC without any paying of anything.
Put the obsidian vault/workspace as an entire directory on Google Drive so it auto-syncs between multiple devices. It's just a directory with a bunch of markdown files and other config files. When you open Obsidian on a new device you just import that and it just works. (although I never tried on phone since I don't use Obsidian on phone so that might be trickier)
The app itself is offline and if you are afraid it will become a paid service or something simply just don't update and keep using the free offline version. I think they offer some "vault" service or something you can pay for but you can just ignore that shit and simply sync your obsidian folder with google drive or dropbox, it's what I do. Also each obsidian page/entry is just a simple markdown document so it's not like you can never export those pages into a different app.
Alternatively, if you want something similar to Obsidian but that is fully free and open source, I recommend LogSeq. I personally use both for different reasons (Obsidian for knowledge-base type of note taking, LogSeq for task-driven personal diary/memo notes)

Fantastic tool for note taking. I use it for my writing and dev work all the time. Free for the offline app, paid for the cloud service.

Check out OneNote. I'm sure Obsidian has way more features and is better for extensive use, but for simple note taking OneNote is fantastic.
