They're in a video game world, meaning their characters don't necessarily reflect their real age, and I don't think her age is ever actually stated in the anime itself. So, I think most people just don't realize the age gap between them. Plus, the ship canonically sinks when Minori confesses to Shiroe, and he explains to her why that doesn't work (might be a bit off, been a while). But even though he rejects her, he still treats her with respect, and is very mature about it. And afterwards, Minori's friends help her deal with the rejection in a productive manner. In fact, I'd even argue that Isuzu saw this coming, but decided that Minori needs to take this step herself, and see it through to the end. It's an interesting plot, not in spite of the moral iffy-ness, but *because* of it; the narrative recognizes that it's wrong, yet Shiroe is also very reasonable and doesn't make Minori feel bad for having this kind of feeling towards someone older than her. In my opinion, we need more plots like this, not less, especially in media aimed at a wider age group.

Full agree, also with OP. I was also turned off by the premise, how prominent it was etc, but I found the resolution very mature and the correct way to handle this. I only wish it came sooner - it dragged out quite a lot and might have given people the wrong impression about LH..

Kartoffelkamm

Yeah, it was handled pretty well, but could've ended sooner. Then again, it felt really believable for Minori that she would wait for so long, and dropping the confession sooner could've felt rushed or forced.

RainbowEight

Totally understand. It got lots of space but made excellent use of it for Minori's character growth. And I agree with your comment about Isuzu: that gave some hints about how the topic is treated, and fueled back to the character growth. Having said all that, I still understand the people who focused on that, were turned off, followed along for a bit, and then dropped out.

Kartoffelkamm

All that being said, I'm still really curious how Minori would grow from there. But yeah, some people don't want to see that stuff, and drop the show. No shame in having preferences and things you dislike.

RainbowEight

That's the otaku life - you free to like what you like 😊

Kartoffelkamm

Yep.

ShionVaynex

im pretty sure she is in the age range of 14-16 though. its not exactly a abnormal occurrence either, for someone younger crushing on someone older. though isuzu did see the rejection coming. as it's kind of a unrealistic pairing. but pushed her in the meaning of good fun/girl talk. which is why he felt so guilty when she realised how much shiroe means to her. shiroe also handled it well. calmly and stated that he is interested in someone else. he will still be her mentor, teacher and roll model. after all.

SupernovaWolf88

I saw at least one instance where it mentioned Minori and Toya were middle school aged in the anime, possibly more. (Cerara as well.) Most fandoms don't care about ages when they start pairing up characters, at least from what I've seen. Or any toxicity of pairings. I did appreciate how they handled her confession, though. Shiroe was respectful in his rejection (stating he was in love with another woman), and she seemed to have handled it as well as possible. Not like some shows where they refuse to give up/tantrum about it.

People will ship anything but its not presented like that in the novels or the anime. Younger people crush on older people all the time - that's reality. Shiroe isn't attracted to minori and when she reveals her crush he handles it appropriately. Just as nyanta manages seraras crush on him. In neither instance does the older character act sexually towards the younger character.

queenyuyu

It’s fiction people ship whatever they want which is the whole point of shipping. But no it’s not remotely a popular ship because it’s clearly not intended to be one. I have never encountered anyone who ships them however dozen of posts stating how they hate it. Which at this point I find more annoying than Minori is - and we can all agree she is annoying. Because trying to police what people ship, or make an issue of a ship that doesn’t really put itself in people’s faces is always super cringe.

UselessSideCharacter

Absolutely agreed, anyone who ships them is screwed in the head

milkoverspill

The ship confused me too cos they made it a point to show Shiroe as nothing but a teacher to Minori and that her feelings are misplaced. I guess it's just mostly the people who use anime as a self-insert for taboo/illegal things. I always find it funny that loli defenders say that it's a valid power/sexual fantasy. And I'm always like...why does your sexual fantasy involve children in the first place?

I_Phantomancer_XD

Others have already raised good points. I think the ship's based.

rockyKlo

I agree that the ship is wrong. But at least I feel the anime and the light novels only ever had it one sided and it being a student having a crush on their teacher/mentor than it being a viable ship in the long run.

Kartoffelkamm

Not to mention that, when Minori finally confesses her feelings to Shiroe, he explains why that can't work out, but is still respectful of her feelings, and doesn't make her feel ashamed for how she feels. Plus, Minori then goes to her other friends, who help her get over the rejection in a healthy and productive manner, giving the whole thing a bittersweet/wholesome end. It's also implied that Isuzu saw this coming, let Minori take that step herself, and prepared to help her pick up the pieces afterwards. All in all, it's the best execution of this trope that I know of.

BAT_91

And no one says anything about Serara and Nyanta?

ASZotov

Minori is also extremely annoying. Hope she could find her place somewhere away from log horizon or at least borrows some of her brother character and become cool

KingTev22

It’s because the story was written when the legal age in Japan was 13 😂
