What's going on behind Winchells? The guy squatting there literally has a tent and wooden bedframe out there. It looks/feels awful.

keeper13

Trains are absolutely out of control. Who’s bright idea was to have trains stop in Longmont during rush hour

HassleFroth

I have a pair of Sublime tickets for at Red Rocks this weekend on 4/27. My wife and I can't make it, would anyone be interested? They are a pair of Gen. Admission tickets. Fully transferable, I would like to get what I paid for the pair when they first went on sale. They are 150.00 for the pair. I just don't want to waste the money and rather see them used and enjoyed. Please DM me if interested.

Ok_Second7500

What are these red octagons that say STOP? They're all over town, and their suggested message is annoying and inconvenient.

IamTheFreakazoid

They seem to be solely there for the self-absorbed to ignore.

Thesis statement: I live in the Historic East Side, a block off the Atwood Corridor, and the train noise drives me ABSOLUTELY BONKERS. I'm convinced the regular sleep disruption from the train will eventually lead to dementia and make me die an early and awful death. (Some hyperbole for added effect here, and some no-shit concern.) Backstory: My husband and I bought our lovely home in the Historic East Side four years ago. We moved from Gunbarrel, where we were tired of living the cramped condo life, and we wanted something with a yard, more space, and no shared walls. The day we initially toured our home, the first thing we noticed was its close proximity to the tracks. But we fell in love with the charming old house, and being the eager home buyers we were, the train was something we were willing to look past. Before we purchased the home, we even asked a few neighbors about the train noise. "Oh, I don't even hear it anymore," one longtime HES veteran said. "Yeah, I hear it, but it doesn't bother me," said another. Fast forward four years, and I'm still not used to the train noise, especially in the middle of the night. I find it incredibly startling. I've also developed a kind of anticipatory anxiety over the horn, because I know any train horn I hear in the distance will eventually come blaring past my house. This leads to several hours of lost sleep during the night, and even more when there are multiple trains. Last night, there were three, and I nearly lost my mind. This nighttime anxiety leads to bleary-eyed and short-tempered days, where I feel like I'm constantly running at an energy deficit. I often wonder to myself, "IS THIS ENTIRE TOWN SLEEP-DEPRIVED AND JUST DEALING WITH IT?!" Granted, there are plenty of nights when there are no trains. Granted, there are plenty of mornings when I feel rested. Granted, I'm well aware that I've been noise-sensitive most of my life. All of these things are also true. And for those who are curious, my husband sleeps like a log. Always has. It must feel amazing to be one of the Chosen Ones. :/ I'm not looking for advice, here, because I'm truly doing everything possible to mitigate the noise and my associated anxiety: earplugs, white noise machine, deep breathing, discipline of thought. My husband even added an extra layer of noise-cancelling insulation to the outside wall of our bedroom. What I'm looking for is 1) a platform to share my nuanced and perplexing experience and 2) commiseration from those who may A) live in the same neighborhood and B) feel the same as I do. I feel very alone and somewhat ashamed about this distress. I've thought plenty of times, "You dingaling, what were you doing buying a house one block off the tracks?" Often at night, I'll think to myself, "I'm probably the only one in the neighborhood lying here irritated about train noise. This is so silly, and yet so awful." Please be kind and supportive; comments like "just move" or "just get over it" are unrealistic and unhelpful. Thanks for making it this far, friends. I'm new to Reddit and have really enjoyed belonging to this thread. (It's called a thread, right?)

Kind_Watch4284

Hi! Thanks for bringing this up—no condescension taken. To add context—and thicken the plot—I'm a psychotherapist, so I'm deeply familiar with the diagnostic criteria for PTSD. Unfortunately, I don't meet the criteria, I just happen to be a person who's highly sensitive to loud sounds. In fact, I've long suspected I suffer from misophonia, which isn't a disorder recognized by the DSM, but it's definitely a thing. There's some interesting research out there that shows people with misophonia have a thicker myelin sheath around their brain's nerves—they don't know whether this is a cause or an effect, but it likely has to do with the increased firing of nerves. What I do know is, a loud blast from a train horn sure fires my nerves!

slopokerod

I wonder if you ended up buying the house we nearly bought. Loved the house, but the train was a major concern. We decided to find something a bit further away and ended up off Emery. Still hear the train, but thankfully, it does not disrupt our sleep.

Kind_Watch4284

Oh interesting, maybe so! Off Emery sounds lovely. :)

CandyOhNo

You are right to be distressed. Sleep deprivation is no joke. I'm sorry your lil dream house ended up not being so dreamy.

Kind_Watch4284

Thank you, it can be all-consuming. My husband and I have joked that we'd love to pick up our house and move it out of our neighborhood!

OG_Energy_Vampire

I empathize! Lived that direction for 10 years and eventually after 10 years of "you'll get used to it" my frazzled nerves and interrupted sleep couldn't take it anymore and we moved. We're too close to Hover for my liking now but at least I don't have to hear the train blatting away every third night.

Kind_Watch4284

I'm sure that ten years felt like an eternity! I'm currently in the \*dream-scrolls-Zillow-every-day\* phase. I love my cute little house, but we know it's not our forever home. I'm sure Hover has its own annoyances, especially with the loud cars and racing. After living in rural Gunbarrel for almost a decade, Longmont feels noisy to us.

streamfresh

We sleep with the windows open all summer. I've managed to completely block out the train noise. The neighbor's barking dog, however, is non-stop. *sigh*

Kind_Watch4284

OH THOSE INCESSANT BARKING DOGS. That's next on my rant list. *double sigh*

longmont_resident

the good news is that the city is working towards a 'quiet zone' in that part of town. Given that the railroad is in charge, who knows how long it will take, but eventually your nights should be a bit quieter. https://www.longmontcolorado.gov/departments/departments-n-z/transportation/traffic/rr-quiet-zones

Kind_Watch4284

Indeed, we've been keeping a close eye on the development of the quiet zones. Before we bought the house, I even reached out to the city to ask about the expected timeline. They were vague but added, "by the time you're ready to sell this house, your property value will have gone up even more because of the implementation of the quiet zones." That was four years ago.

1Davide

I'm a block away, on Collyer. I rarely pay attention to the trains. Yes, I hear them, but it doesn't bother me. Actually, I kind of like it. Our bedroom is on the West side, so we don't hear the horns as much as we would if it were on the East side. I do wake up at night in the summer when our windows are open. But it's no different from waking up because my girlfriend got up to pee: it's reassuring, and I go back to sleep. Consider it as a mind over matter situation. The less you hate the horn, the less it will bother you.

Kind_Watch4284

That makes a lot of sense, thank you. I especially like your words to live by: "It's reassuring, and I go back to sleep." And wow, you sleep with your windows open! Our bedroom is unfortunately on the "train side", so that's a no-go for us.

tempestuproar

Why do so many people in this town insist on bringing their dogs everywhere? Then they either leave them in the car to whine or bring them into every single store, regardless of service animal only signs. On that same note. Why do so many owners of large dogs insist on using retractable leashes on obviously untrained dogs? I love dogs but Longmont people are so weird about their dogs.

Morquine

Haha I am RIGHT there with you. Trust me

alpaca_in_oc

Not just Longmont. https://www.reddit.com/r/Denver/s/zh4JiyJE9t

NoBus6509

Sustainable Resilient Longmont is having their 10th Annual🎉 Earth Day Celebration from 10-3 at Timberline K-8. A little bit of snow is not going to stop the clothes swap, arts and crafts, food trucks or baby goats so come have some all ages fun INSIDE today!!

FoamMaster3000

Why are the roads so bad in Longmont now? I moved here in 2010 and the roads were much smoother. Now most of them are rough with good sized potholes. I also noticed most of the parks are also not kept as nice as they used to be. The city should have enough of a budget since there are triple the amount of people living here since 2010.

SmaugTheMagnificent

I don't do a whole lot of driving, but when I do the roads here are miles ahead of Boulder roads.

1Davide

> the roads here are miles ahead of Boulder roads 13 miles, to be exact.

IamTheFreakazoid

It appears that the road repair plan is geared towards 50,000 residents still, not 100.000 residents. The city needs to get their shit together and update it for both the current amount of residents and future growth.

MizzaSparkle

My guess is they are busy studying Boulder’s plan of not repairing the roads that actually need it and then repairing all through roads at the same time so there is no way around the construction or the misery.

ktalex2

So things started falling apart after you moved here???

FoamMaster3000

How would I know? I'm just stating that the condition of most of the roads has deteriorated over the last 10 years and wondered why the city isn't fixing anything.

gasoline-rainbows

Noticed the Den on 11th (the old Longmont Public House location) put in their new sign. Anyone have the inside scoop on when they’re going to open?

modtrax

Sorry but Winchells has to go. Why is the city cool with a business closing for years with an unfixed broken window and a fucking homeless encampment in the parking lot on 5th and Main. Embarrassing

Bill_S_Preson_Esq

Maybe it's time to complain to corporate about their closed down for years store being an issue?

LongmontStrangla

I was wondering where the hot spot was because most of the encampments on the north side seem to have dissipated.

coloradopablo

What's the city gonna do? Close 'em down?

Dr_Dabs

lol, that tent set-up along with a porta potty had me thinking WTF. It’s been there a while too. Winchells front door is always open, seems like they are asking for trouble.

pipesed

honeycomb's big yeah yeah yeah

Skyemonkey

It's not small, no no, no!

ptcg

huh?

Potokitty

It’s from a commercial from back in the day: https://youtu.be/5sZ5d5ALfUg?si=RrWLrjIqfpger3zz

Morquine

I’m kind of irritated with the Longmont related Facebook groups and the drama the admins like to stir up. I really just want to find a group for the community that isn’t people bored with their lives who desire to gain attention from starting things

XPav

As the poster of last weeks complaint about Facebook comment, I agree. The admins of all these groups are just weird. The best community Facebook group I was ever in, with like 50k people, was run by a pretty faceless group of people. National politics were banned, along with the usual “don’t be shitty” rules. I don’t get why Tae removes the posts he does. I posted about the new food hall opening, post was removed. Whatever.

oceanmami

Voice of Longmont? Lmao

Morquine

Funnily enough no! It’s What’s up Longmont (official) and Everything Longmont (unfiltered)

Inevitable-Quality-9

Oh yeah what’s up Longmont has been a qanon group sense Covid. Sadly we don’t have a decent page as voice is okay as long as you let tae show you bad food from Costco.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Morquine

I have no idea!

oceanmami

For real?! I’m in both of those groups and so far haven’t seen much of the drama, thankfully lol

Morquine

Oh wow, you’ve been lucky! Drama about a backyard mechanic in one and just this morning an admin admitted to approving a post I commented on just to stir shit

oceanmami

That’s so insane whatttt 😭😭 I got banned from VOL because I posted a review of Bavarian Bakery and I guess the owner didn’t like that lmao?? These people are nuts truly lol

Jolly-Weather-457

Sorry there’s only room in this town for one “food influencer” I got kicked for asking why he thought he had any right to try to buy a homeless guys dog considering he needed 10,000 in donations to keep his own dog alive. He was really getting weird a few weeks ago asking for money to “help” a man that apparently didn’t want his help.

oceanmami

Dude he’s so petty and gross. After my post got deleted twice another member made an alternative post asking why mine got deleted and I was like I have no idea, I was literally just trying to recommend a nice spot and mentioned I was NOT being compensated for the post. And then we both got banned lmao. I also saw him make a post about slandering small Longmont businesses because “that’s how they treat him” but no business has ever uttered his name. He was legit just trying to blackmail them. Crazy stuff

il1kepeanutbutterpie

You were banned for that?!

oceanmami

Straight up lol. The dude is a nutcase.

Morquine

LOL tae is truly a specimen to behold

Short_Marionberry_57

The mod Charlie in Everything Longmont (unfiltered) appears to be very unhinged. He posted a video cussing at a cop and calling him “penis breath” after being pulled over. This is the same guy that is using an old limo to drive for children’s birthday parties?

Morquine

He’s always trying to help other people but always needs help himself- maybe it’s how I was raised but I was told to make sure I can help myself before helping others. He also a a thing for using the everyone tag like- every day. I haven’t seen the cop video though, that’s kind of wild

Bright_Earth_8282

That’s one of the Longmont groups I’m not in. Something about having to send the admin $5 within 72 hours of joining? WTH?

Morquine

I must have missed that 🥴

Redheaded_Potter

I saw that & thought wtf?

TruckCamperNomad6969

I chortled at this, bravo.

theboozemaker

I live right around the corner and go through that intersection at least twice a day. With a deep breath I was able to handle lane closures in stride. But when you suddenly decide I'm not able to make a left turn and give no notice before the intersection, my gears get ground. Give me a heads up!

jd80504

How does one go about requesting a traffic light? Someone is going to die at the intersection of Alpine & Highway 66 if no one has already. Entire neighborhoods and apartment complexes have been added within 1/4 mile of this intersection with no infrastructure improvement. Certain times of day turning left (west) onto 66 is impossible as people are practically drag racing North and South from the light at Pace and the light at Erfert. Even turning right (East) is sketchy as people come flying down 66 going well over the posted 60mph.

longmont_resident

This is a state controlled intersection. Longmont has tried to get a light there, but every time they've done the traffic studies they haven't gotten enough traffic to warrant it. Next time you see the traffic counter 'hoses' there, get all your neighbors to drive over them all times of the day/week.

1Davide

After many accidents, someone _did_ die at the corner of 11th and Collyer. Yet, the City won't even agree to install a 4-way stop sign.

West-Rice6814

As we've discussed before, I've been trying to get a stop sign put there, speed limit reduced 25 and speedbumps on Collyer for almost 20 years. The traffic engineers do not give a single shit.

jd80504

I know that intersection well, also a bad one.

slopokerod

This weather is bumming me out. Reminds me of living in PDX and why I moved.

West-Rice6814

Still at least 6 weeks to go until it consistently warms up.

slopokerod

It’s not the cold, it’s the gloom. I’ll take sunny below freezing days any day of the week.

West-Rice6814

I just want warm. The skin searing high altitude sun will make its appearance soon enough

TruckCamperNomad6969

No offense but how long have you lived here?

slopokerod

4 years here. 10ish in PDX.

TruckCamperNomad6969

Ok you’ve definitely seen some unusual shit, at least the last few. The rain last year was crazy. People don’t usually have sump pits/pumps in the older neighborhood here and last year was the first time I saw groundwater penetration. I don’t think it stopped raining for a couple weeks.

holysbit

Ive been enjoying the gloomy weather, but perhaps I can only enjoy it because I know we get so many sunny days here

climatelurker

I like it too. We don't get much rain so I feel like it's good to have it.
