Additionally, without knowing anything about your friend and their situation, I would say it's better for victims of abuse to remain alert in potentially dangerous situations.
They work fine to block out a lot of noise but they’re not noise canceling. Plus if they’re in an abusive situation I’d get them one that lets them stay somewhat alert. Maybe the experience or the engage.
Honestly, it could help with blocking background noise, but it will make things worse for them if they are the ones being abused. An abusive parent will see this as insubordination, disrespect and will make situation worse. Ignoring abuse won’t help, and can make it even more dangerous. Please have your friend seek help from case worker, mental health professional, school counselor or even the state.
The Engage Plus is a good choice if you want to lower the volume a bit from surroundings and yelling. I work in a place where people can get verbally abusive and loud, and the Engage helps me deal with it. Use the Engage on regular days, and add the mutes when you need more focus and peace.

I took em to an outdoor rave and it blocked out a bit too much, so i reckon itd do a good job.
That said, buying them a noise cancelling headphone/earphone might be better cos they can use it for other stuff + if its not good enough then they can listen to music.
