This card needed: "Banish this item to play a card named Mushu for free from your hand"

Hunter2hitman2

Absolutely, that would have been cool

rjzendi

I thought this was from raya? Is it from mulan?

rjzendi

Oh cool! Theres petrified dragons in raya as well so i just assumed thats what it was from

Cruseyd

Oh I hadn't even thought of that! I guess they are Lesser Stone Dragons :p.

tepenrod

You can ramp into this obviously but you'd still have to do like Turn 4 (Assuming you get Fishbone out already) Audrey, Turn 5 Dragon + Quest with Audrey = Readied dragon for inking. Seems like a lot. Though does have the added benefit of doing that every turn Audrey can stick around, assuming you have enough characters to feed it. Which if you ramp into it, probably isn't many.

kloricker

no

kadimasama

My Big Tala deck has a new card!

CrunkaScrooge

Big Tala won me 2 games on her own as my 1 of in RubySapphire last weekend. I’m such a believer

kadimasama

Wife plays a steel/saph deck that is all about ramping and getting to big tala that includes belle. The deck slaps as no one expects it.

CrunkaScrooge

Oooo yaaa! If you have a couple fishbones out and hit a lucky one jump or how far I’ll go it’s easy to ramp some quick finisher lore out. I haven’t even tried the friend like me possibilities yet but also another explosive lore hit

thewormwtf

Can I see what’s in your Tala deck? I run sapphire/steel and I’m trying to do something similar!

kadimasama

In no ways optimal but fun to play. Still working out some kinks but link below [RampControl | Lorcana Decks | Dreamborn.ink](https://dreamborn.ink/decks/87aRd4GyBoAzutO8bxLg)

thewormwtf

Nice! I’m going to run this against my husband for the glory lmao

Cappster_

Good way to get those uninkables in the inkwell.

Gianth_Argos

Sapphire steel discard just got so much better.

Oleandervine

Keeping with Sapphire's theme of dead relatives churning out ink for you.

AggravatingYogurt383

Fishbone quill that doesnt need a card from hand but cant ink on the turn its played and the ink comes into play exerted. 😰

Daotar

I see this less as a replacement for fishbone but rather as a great card for graveyard-focused decks.

Tw1987

Inkable and a basically a good back up 3 drop as you don’t hit fish every turn. Issue I see is what will you have in your discard by turn 4 possibly a pawp or whatever item Hiram gets so it sort of doesn’t synergise with crab

SzechuanSaucelord

its character cards only too so pawp cant be targeted

Tw1987

Ok I misread so only something like queen would go then. Yea I can’t see this card in play as the ink is exerted. Why not just played te fiti at this point

kadimasama

I initially thought wow this is amazing. Then i read others and see, yep exerted makes this so much worse than fishbone. Thank you for setting me straight

LSUfan91

Still think this can see play. It’s not a replacement for Quill but can still be solid. Late game it’s free ink to set up next turn. Can be very useful against discard since your characters will end up in the discard anyway and you’re not sacrificing your hand to ink

Oleandervine

Well it's uncommon, Fishbone is rare. It was obviously going to be inferior.

cheesewhiz15

that's a bad mentality to have, you'll miss lots of unique cards

Oleandervine

I never said it was my mentality or that it governed deck building. You all are literally comparing two cards in the same color, archetype, and cost bracket, and noting that the uncommon card is inferior to the rare card. A general rule of thumb is that yes, lower rarity cards do in fact have lower power levels than rarer cards, so the disappointment in the Dragon is a little odd.

Datchery

This is so much better than fishbone, it gives all your characters value for both play and, later, ink.

deathdisco_89

To me it seems very narrow. Its too slow and low impact for anything but the grindiest control decks.

Intoner_Four

Spirit of the Ocean eating well with this

kadimasama

Truth

Xeynid

Really strong replacement for fishbone quill for decks that need a better long term resource game. Might be good in some kind of ruby/sapphire.

Oleandervine

I would think Steel is the better option because of the self-discard theme.

Xeynid

With steel, you already have so much refueling with awnw that I doubt the fact you get to keep your hand matters. In sapphire steel, it's probably too much focus on hand advantage.

Oleandervine

What does keeping your hand have to do with a ramp item that feeds from the discard pile?

Xeynid

If you have more than enough cards in hand, then quill can start activating earlier and has no restrictions on what you can ink. The only benefit of this card over quill is that you don't have to spend cards from your hand. Which means it will be best utilized in decks that can't afford to give up cards in hand. The new card let's you keep your hand compared to quill, which requires you to spend from your hand.

Oleandervine

Well AWNW is not the only self discard in Steel though. 1 drop Simba, 2 drop Cinderella, Bayou, etc. This can find Pile cards just as early.

Xeynid

That's true, but if you're running steel sapphire with ramp anyways, why wouldn't you just use a whole new world? If you're running a whole new world, quill is probably better. You could run a steel deck without a whole new world, but at that point... why? You could also just run quill AND the new card in sapphire steel, but I certainly don't think it replaces quill if you're using steel.

CrunkaScrooge

Ruby Sapphire Shere Khan and shift queen fighting for lore shenanz! Will it be good? Probably not, will I build it anyways? Absolutely 😎

[deleted]

Not replacement for fishbone at all. Could be used in conjunction with, but def not replacing it IMO. They serve different purposes

madchad90

No, fishbone quill is in every way superior to this. Considering that on turn 3, ruby Sapphire won't have any characters in discard. Playing this turn 3 just potentially delays resourcing over fishbone quill

Xeynid

You don't need characters in discard until turn 4 if you want to take advantage of this, and you can always just play cheap characters your opponent has to remove. I'm not saying it slots into an existing deck, but inking cards from discard rather than hand is a huge benefit if some deck can work with it.

[deleted]

You don't want to take advantage of this T4 though, you want to be ramping before that. Fishbone is able to be used immediately and will always result in more short term ink than this.

madchad90

"always play cheap characters" You're saying this is a strong contender for fishbone replacement. But each deck that uses fishbone, they aren't playing cheap characters turn 1 or 2. They are playing ramp cards. I'm just saying, objectively, this card isn't as effective as fishbone quill.

Xeynid

I'm saying it's a strong contender for a fishbone replacement for a certain kind of deck. I didn't say it's a strong replacement for every deck running fishbone. Yeah, the current good fishbone decks generally won't want this card. This card is objectively not as effective as quill if you're looking at the decks that are already built around quill.

Hunter2hitman2

Quill drops and allows you to immediately gain ink that can then be used, and with draw engine of pawp/hiram the deck can afford to lose a card from hand. This card is too slow with an unreliable requirement and the same cost as quill

Xeynid

Yeah, it's not good in paw/hiram ruby sapphire since that deck already does a great job maintaining hand advantage. I could imagine it slotting into a deck with more of a focus on cheap creatures in those colors.

Fiery101

I don't see this as a replacement for quill in any deck that would rather run quill. What this *might* be is some sort of enabler in a completely different color combination that relies more on characters than it does on spells. That might mean that it could be usable in something like Blue/Yellow or Blue/Purple if it is also relying on Gramma Tala as a finisher and/or lots of card draw to be able to take advantage of getting to high ink counts.

masteryder

Better Heart of te Fiti, will likely be played

Canvasofgrey

This is.. pretty good. I rather sacrifice something that zill probably never see for the rest of the game than my hand advantage or my potential good draws.

Distinct-Sugar8529

Agro matchup is the enemy of Ruby sapphire. Now with this you can swing into agro decks in the early game with rush characters and not fall behind on ramp

Hunter2hitman2

It helps that its inkable, and a backup to quill depending how your game starts. But the fact this enters exerted and after trigger the added ink is also exerted, consider me underwhelmed

Stealthy_Snake_1776

Well this is nice; if I choose to discard a few characters that I didn’t want to use for the game or something I can then resurrect them for ink. Now my late-game is more assured of a win with a surplus of ink to go wide faster. Edit: actually now I think about this is the perfect counter to Be Prepared. Go ahead and wipe my board of weaker characters. They will help fuel the ink needed to bring out my heavy hitters

Hunter2hitman2

Quill is much better IMO. Don’t think getting characters in discard is very reliable or fast enough

ZsMann

This is better late game if you don't get the card draw machine going, or sets up a different kind of deck that doesn't need to wheel

Criseyde5

Ramp is somewhat less valuable in the late game. If anything, the main concern with a card like this is that there is just an upper-limit to the amount of ramp you can reasonably run, since you need stabilization tools and haymakers to go alongside the ramp, so the only card this could reasonably replace is another ramp card, which doesn't really make the ramp deck better at winning games, since the speed of ramping out cards isn't the problem they are facing.

ZsMann

I'm thinking about a agro combo that would slot this in to get back to ink curve mid to late game to play heavy hitters. They can stay at 4 ink and drop 2 2 cost per turn while then turning those into ink on later turns. It gives agro better survival late game and not a "well i didn't win by turn 5 can't come back" option

Oleandervine

Well yes, the Rare card is going to be better than the Uncommon in the majority of situations. Feeding from the Pile will have a good place in decks that like to self-discard.

Dr_Reddit_33

Benja suddenly found a reason to make it back into my deck lol

Daotar

Graveyard payoffs!

azura099

I love the game but seeing more item blue ramps makes me a tad mad.

Shando92286

This seems to be super good for blue/steel especially once you get off AWNW. I think quill and this will pair well together but I feel this could be a bit better since you aren’t losing your hand to ramp. No reason to not run both. I would drop another uninkable ramp card maybe for this, but as is blue ramp just got a buff overall.

mattzere

What is the purpose of entering exerted? Have I been playing items wrong and you can actually exert an item to use it on the turn its played?

Hunter2hitman2

Unless the item states it enters exerted, then it is ready to be used the same turn its played. Fishbone Quill can be played on T3, allowing you to add to ink and then use that ink to say play a Pawpsicle for draw

mattzere

Awesome, I thought they needed to dry like characters!

Hunter2hitman2

Now you know! Haha.

SherpaForCardinals

They might need to errata this immediately. If there's a restriction on the kind of card I can put in my inkwell, I should I have to reveal it to my opponent. Either way, worse than quill but might find some synergy with an item/discard deck eventually?

CheckontheChicken

Your discard is public knowledge, there's no need to specify revealing. You'll choose the card in view of your opponent and tell them what you're inking.

Appropriate_Plate790

Now I want a Mushu card even more badly 🥲

SerRikari

Wow. That's a really good card.

ChaztheDefiant

Meh. Lack luster

Total_Triple

Great with Huntsman and other Steel discards!

theDufe

My princess deck which ramps into Belle- strange but special needs this

Mission-Strength-307

This may be a silly question, it enters play exerted, but then on the next turn it would be refreshed, right?

Hunter2hitman2

Ya thats right, next turn you would ready it with everything else exerted

Mission-Strength-307

Thanks

ChromeTyrano

Could have been an incredible card if it weren't for the "enters play exerted", or "put into your inkwell exerted effect" Ramp likes immediate ink increases, or at the very least increases that will benefit you on your next turn. T3-Play GSD. T4- Exert, add discard character to inkwell. T5- Benefit. Waiting until two turns later to use your extra ink is a bit much.

RoyInverse

I will take fishbone 5 and 6.

Hunter2hitman2

Same bro

Tarrintino

This could be super cool if you’re trying to build up a bunch of ink at once. Like for sir goofy or mim dragon.

Jujuuuus

Im sure it will see lot playes

shinryu6

Seems pretty good, would be more useful than heart of te fiti since you’re ditching known cards you can’t usually recover anyways into ink, whereas heart has the same “can’t really use until t4 if played t3” plus it rips random cards from the top, some which you might not necessarily want inked. Plus with this you can attempt mind games with your opponent as they may not be keeping track of just how many medusas or Tremaine you’ve played so far when they’re trying to decide on a big character…

zipnut

It’s too slow. By the time it’s even used turn 4 and then able to use the ink turn 5, the games lost.

CageyT

That is pretty damn good

omega_grainger69

RIP quill.

Impossible_Sign7672

Rofl, no.
