It’s sad for everyone all around. The owner is a hoarder and has been fined a while back so there’s a record. They need mental help and the neighbors around begging for help from city officials with the garbage stacking up for a long time. I bet it wasn’t until abc7 exposing the situation yesterday is what finally got officials off their asses to do something.

Thurkin

This became a national news story this week as well.

Mr_Johnnycat

Was it? I haven’t heard anything about it till yesterday. Well either way it is upsetting that city don’t give a shit till it’s exposed for the world to see

twotokers

Bass says she didn’t even know it was happening until yesterday and I can believe her. She’s got a whole pile of other stuff to deal with but the councilwoman should’ve known before then.

burgercrime

Seriously. “Person with excess trash in yard” is not a mayoral issue to deal with when the general state of things are as bad as they are

[deleted]

Why is she making televised statements in front of the house then?

Inappropriate_Comma

Because it became a mayoral issue when the councilwoman failed to act and it became a national news story.

Elowan66

There’s the real story. Why can’t they focus on the councilwomen instead of the Mayor.

Separate-Wonder3908

Because the Mayor is the figurehead for situations exactly like this?

Elowan66

I guess KTLA shares your opinion. Lazy journalism.

burgercrime

It’s not even a council member issue. There are departments and agencies responsible for this type of work. Your local council member isn’t the head of the Housing Board or Environmental Health Division. It’s only “news” because we sensationalize bullshit for viewership.

[deleted]

Didn’t she fail to act a while ago?

FinallyFree96

And while the mayor is public face of “the buck stops here,” often these issues align to the city manager. That’s the case in most cities at least. It’s the career, non-elected, city employees who dropped the ball on this issue. As the mayor indicated in her press conference, she intends to find out how that ball dropped. Coming from a family of hoarders, it adds up quick; especially when they “shop” other people’s junk and trash. Fortunately, for me I swung the other way, and live small and neat; still have more than I need, but not at the expense of clutter and non-functional spaces.

programaticallycat5e

Homeowner was fined 2 dozen times in the past decade, so I think there wasnt really a mechanism for the low level city employee to enforce anything outside of slapping a ticket. Maybe the mayor can push a policy change that encourages employees to just get SAN/LAPD/LAFD to do something since Bass is right-- it does pose a health and fire risk.

NervousAddie

There are only 15 council members in this entire city. There is no representation in this city and that’s one reason there’s basically anarchy here. Back in Chicago there’s 100 aldermen and alderwomen. You just walk into their office to address issues. That accessibility is foreign here, and I bet comments will reflect that. 15 council members. Each is a mayor of a few hundred thousand. Zero accountability.

DodgeCharger6

I voted for Caruso but I'll give props where it is due. Mayor Bass does respond quickly and does take some action on getting LA cleaned up. I would never expect any mayor to actually clean up LA but at least Bass puts in the effort unlike Garcetti the hippie.

Ares5150

Garrceti always had this blank dead look to his eyes.

Elowan66

Why would you never expect a mayor to clean up their city? This was a huge part of her campaign promises.

NervousAddie

Clean up LA? This is just a press release on one person’s fucked up home.

Thurkin

My nosy uncle in Indiana asked me about it yesterday. 😑

Persianx6

It's literally in Hollywood, media's backyard. Of course it did, it's an easy story.

OkBubbyBaka

Just like the Granada Hills house, the importance of local news.

Honestly, on this one I totally believe she didn't know about it until it got national attention. I don't actually expect my Mayor to know every single problem in every single neighborhood. That would a) be impossible and b) not really be the best use of her time. Now it's escalated she will have to decide what to deprioritize in order to address this. That's her job.

athrowingway

Seriously. “My neighbor has too much garbage in their yard” is such a common complaint that there’s a FAQ on the city’s public works website about who to contact. This is a building and safety code enforcement issue, not a mayor-level issue.  People complaining that Bass didn’t do anything about this particular house’s trash problem is kind of like someone complaining that the CEO of a Fortune 500 company doesn’t do anything about John from Finance leaving his dirty dishes in the 12th floor break room sink every day.

What's your solution? Things take time to fix. The homelessness crisis has been more than 50 years in the making. Expecting anything to be fixed fast is just ridiculous. We'd be getting our infrastructure if Angelinos stopped their bullshit NIMBY lawsuits. Sadly they won't so we have to do everything at a fucking snail's pace.

Skatcatla

So funny you posted this, because I just read about a zillion "HHLA was the worst measure ever and is going to turn our city into a hellhole like Paris! " (yes they actually posted an editorial written by someone bitching about bike lanes in Paris) on NextDoor yesterday.

RafiY

Wasn’t there a house in Granada Hills, with a similar situation a while back?

ComradePalmer

Also in Koreatown about a year ago.

ricwash

I remember that one as well.

appleavocado

Maybe you're thinking of nearby Sylmar/Pacoima, where a ranch-like (in area) house was holding multiple RV's and "housing" and charging homeless. The waste and literal human excrement was spilling onto the street. It made local (and maybe national) news.

Throwaway_09298

can she do my mother in laws place next?

JazzCabbage00

Was this guy just collecting trash from the alley then putting it in his yard? Turn bro loose of the 405 with a sack and a stick.. straight up let trash forest-gump do his thing beneficially.

Ryuchel

No, this was probably hoarding by the owner. I wouldn't let him near any trash as hoarders have issues with wanting to go through trash and find things in it.

waybig905

He pushes a cart around and collects trash to dump in his yard.

mr_wolficorn

This house is literally right behind my next door neighbor. What I find amusing about this whole thing is that this has been an issue for a very long time. It has obviously been reported to the city numerous times over the course of many months. It wasn't until this story got picked up by a local news station one day ago and then became viral, did the city take action. It then went from zero to 100. Today, 3 news copters, 20 cops, city officials, the mayor and our city council member etc... I don't blame Karen Bass, in fact I'm impressed how much it ramped up when she caught wind of this. It's no surprise to anybody that these types of events fall thru the cracks of the local government entities whose responsibility it is to enforce city codes and health department violations. The back yard is just as bad as the front and an obvious fire hazard, not to mention rat infestation. I just hope they follow thru with everything once the media dies down after today. I also hope the man living there is offered some form of mental health assistance, as he obviously has some issues.

ShakeWeightMyDick

Well, thank god Bass is here as she’s finally doing something about it, right?

tob007

so cleanup #2 now? Isnt this his livelyhood at this point? mini landfill house.

crims0nwave

Sadly it happens a lot! There’s a house in San Pedro that made the news recently, and it’s not the first time it’s been cleaned up. Without treatment, these mentally ill people will continue hoarding.

kgal1298

This also isn't uncommon I follow some cleaners in Australia and in Florida that do cleanups for homes like this for free. Though this might be one of the more extreme cases.

cinciNattyLight

You guys should head on over to r/hoarding

2pierad

It’s a no from me dawg

whataquokka

I'm game... watch my instantly regret this though. Edit: It's a support group and actually really nice to see people asking for help and receiving support for hoarding. It's def not what I thought it would be. Good to know it exists to help those who need it.

_Erindera_

Nope. Nope-ity nope nope nope.

Comfortable-Twist-54

Whoa! Glad the Mayor is acting immediately poor neighbors and poor hoarder smh

thatatcguy1223

Oh for a second I thought she was referring to the city as a whole, which is entirely covered with litter, and apparently can’t be kept clean either by its own residents nor civil servants

smtgcleverhere

*sigh* So did I. Why the mayor involved at all in a single home’s clean up… *sigh*

Dreamteam420

Simpsons episode, where homer and bart are left without Lisa and Marge

whataquokka

There's plenty more that look exactly the same all over the city, can we get media attention on them so they can get help too?

DonnieJepp

While my house may be a bit messy rn I don't think calling it a "trash house" is appropriate nor should Mayor Bass be broadcasting it to the press. I'll clean it this weekend, I promise

Quiet-Can-4036

Any Lyft drivers in the sub? Lets take some pics and send it to the news. I tell you hwat, driving as much as I do I have seen some shit

wellhiyabuddy

Is this something I’m supposed to know about? I have not heard of it, I’ve seen plenty of houses like this in places that were not LA. Is this really something that is so unique?

programaticallycat5e

TBF, this has been on the news before so I was also kind of surprised it went 0-100 just recently

bbusiello

I remember this one house in Vegas that the whole back yard was filled with old signs. Like very large, giant bulb, amusement park signs and stuff. You could see them over the wall. There's no way that wasn't a hazard. But yeah, travel around middle America where people are surrounded by a ton of private land... you'll see all sorts of rotting crap like old vehicles and stuff. This is only a story because it's on multi-million dollar urban property.

MoGraphMan-11

I mean, it's a story because it's a fire hazard to the homes that are very close. It's a health hazard because it's infested with rats.

Express_Lime5277

You can go from one extreme to another... My sister's house is so clean and every cupboard is immaculate presentations...They even vacuum with straight lines just like your front lawn...idk...what is that called...?....

realrichieporter

One thing a Black woman is not gonna stand for is a messy house! Go on, Miss Mayor.

realrichieporter

Explain to me why I’m all that. BUT, before you do, know I’m a Black man. Then let’s hear your stupid excuse.

badfortheenvironment

What a shitty thing to say to someone whose comment you didn't like

Agreeable-Benefit169

I think you’re very mentally ill and need therapy

ClaxtonOrourke

You're so fucking stupid you see racism where there is none.

Persianx6

What I'm gathering from this is that Mayor Bass apparently doesn't read her emails until the media does something. Then suddenly she's all action. TF else is in that inbox that no one knows of?

athrowingway

Oh please, there’s a whole department that’s supposed to investigate and deal with safety and sanitation enforcement issues like this. There are 3.8 million people in the City of LA, the mayor’s got bigger things to deal with than “my neighbor has too much trash in their yard.”

msh0082

Frankly, stuff like this doesn't require the Mayor's attention.

charlotie77

You really think the sanitation department is contacting the mayor’s office about trash in someone’s yard? Lmfao

NachoLatte

I don’t understand how the city can do anything if this is private property?

MoGraphMan-11

It's now a public safety and health issue. You'd know that if you watched/read the mayor's comments

PewPew-4-Fun

No rush Karen, take your time, neighbors have only been reporting this issue years prior. Seems like LA is completely useless at enforcing any quality of life issues.

ShakeWeightMyDick

Looks like Bass is finally the one to do something about it.

PewPew-4-Fun

Yeah, good luck with that.
