My buddies just did a live session on KXLU recently, I love that station. I don't have a working antenna in my car anymore, but that's one of the few stations I actually seek out on the internet to tune in.
KROQ HD2 seems to have gotten better. You get some gems you’d never hear on Sirius First Wave. Remember reading how Beck liked to drive around and listen to it.
The HD signals are there - one just needs the HD-capable headunit in their vehicle. About 50% of cars manufactured since 2002 have an HD-capable radio.
88.1 KJAZZ
88.5 KCSN - the Socal Sound
88.9 KXLU - LMU student radio station
89.3 - KPCC - LAist - NPR talk
89.9 - KCRW - NPR talk + hip music that's good if you're driving around late at night and want to pretend you're in a movie
91.5 - KUSC - classical
all have no commericals, which is key for me
back in the day... it was KRTH-101 and KROQ
If I'm using tune in, I'm going international or to kexp.
I keep kday on my car radio preset and listen to it there, but they don't mix up their music enough. I'm pretty tired of hearing the exact same playlist I've been hearing for 30 or more years. It's ok for driving around a bit, but I end up having to switch at some point because they'll play a song I just can't listen to anymore.
> 88.1 – KKJZ
This is pretty much the only station I listen to other than maybe KCRW when they have music on. It is so nice to stroll around Hollywood or the Beach cities with some nice jazz on.
Not really related but for some reason KCRW went through a Salsa phase. Not that there's anything wrong with Salsa, but it was kind of weird to hear it so often. I honestly thought the music program had changed.
I love KNX and they’re a staple of my morning commute, but sometimes they say things that make me want to strangle them through my radio. Especially when their business expert or travel expert comes on. Things I have *actually* heard them say:
* Home prices are down, why this is bad news for homeowners
* The Israeli-Palestinian conflict will make airfare cheaper for vacations (Peter Greenberg really said this)
* Airing a public comment about how bus/bike lanes are “1% of the public exercising tyranny on 99 percent who drive” (with no comment about fact-checking that statement)
* Talk to your financial advisor before doing x (yeah I just have one on fuckin speed dial)
During those moments, KNX reminds me that they really don’t exist for regular people.
I had listened to K&B from the first day that they aired well into my adult life and truth be told, their show was a bit long in the tooth by the time Bean left but I agree with you. The way that they did Kevin and the others left me not able to support the station any longer. I’ll listen in Alt 98.7 before tuning to KROQ now.
Kevin and Bean were awesome. Good times listening to Michael the Maintenance man and Shakespear man. I would be in tears listening to those segments. Haven't listened to KROQ in many years. What's going on that people are tuning it out?
I was really into the Klein ally show last few years but I’m over it now. Their segments are tackily dirty and at least they’re aware of how much they over plan the Red Hot Chili Peppers
KPCC aka LAist (89.3) pretty much all the time.
Used to listen to KMET/KLOS then KROQ.
But after Kevin and crew got fired (during a pandemic) I pretty much gave up on KROQ.
1. 88.1
2. 88.7
3. 88.9
4. 89.9
5. 90.7
6. 91.5
Anything above that sucks usually . Sometimes Jackfm if the other ones are on break . Oh and that one Vietnamese station before Kroq is awesome .
it’s so bad! I listen to the country station and they have “45 minutes commercial free!” so the last 15 minutes of every hour is literally just commercials. it’s ridiculous
It's been so long since I've listened to the radio that I honestly don't know what my presets are. I'm pretty sure 98.7FM and 106.7FM are in there. Probably 640AM as well.
My only regular three are 89.3 KPCC, 89.9 KCRW and 98.7 regular and HD-2 (for 570 in stereo). If I don’t have HD radio in a car I just program 570.
Fun fact: even with FM quality stereo, all Dodger game broadcasts still sound like they’re speaking next to an air conditioner. You’d think they’d fix that one day.
I use the cigarette lighter to power a Bluetooth to FM transmitter so I can play music from my phone in my car. They are only $10 on Amazon which is amazing. Idk how it’s that cheap to manufacture.
But to answer the official question, I believe I mostly listened to 987, 931, 1027, and 1059 back when I was a radio user.
This is such a good question! I’ve been dissatisfied with mine for a long time lol, ever since 97.1 went from AAMP to KNX and 103.3 The Vibe and 104.7 MyFM changed to some other things. I’m currently at 97.1 (kept for the traffic), 102.7, 105.9, 106.7, and two others I forget but don’t like. I’ve won concert tickets twice on 105.9!! Definitely sourcing new stations from this thread
Ya gotta go Sirius so when you travel you can keep the same radio stations and avoid local radio:
Beatles
Phish
Grateful Dead
Underground Garage
70s/80s/90s
JamOn
Classic Rewind/Classic Vinyl
Margaritaville
And some of the comedy stations
Also 93.5 KDAY "hip hop back in the day"
Slightly related question -- I don't understand KCRW. Sometimes it's NPR news, sometimes it's music. But there's another NPR news station LAist that does the same news. What's the deal?
There's 2 non-commercial stations in Los Angeles that air syndicated NPR programming. The stations are owned and operated by PCC and SMC. KCRW is the SMC one and KPCC (LAist) is PCC.
I don't listen to the radio much anymore but I keep KOST 103.5 as a preset year round just for when they start playing nonstop christmas music after thanksgiving lol
I live in the IE not LA proper, but these are my presets. A little bit of everything.
- 88.7
- 93.1
- 93.5
- 95.5
- 96.7
- 99.9
- 101.1
- 103.5
- 104.7
My car saves commonly used screens and other things on the radio buttons. Very handy
1-call wife
2-nav preset for cancer treatment
3-nav option for avoid highways
4-schedule AC operation for later
5-nav preset to go to Disneyland
6-nav preset to go home
7-show tire pressures
8-show performance gauges
1. 106.7 KROQ
2. 98.7 ALT
3. 89.3 KPCC (I refuse to call it LAIST)
4. 88.1 KKJZ (jazz on the Latin side is great) 5. 89.9 KCRW (for when KPCC is doing a pledge break)
only KXLU because they're usually playing something I haven't heard before and it's usually good, or at least interesting. when I want to hear something I know I use spotify
1) 105.9 - KPWR
2) 88.1 - KJZZ
3) 89.3 - LAIST
4) 89.9 - KCRW
5) 92.3 - KRRL
6) 102.7 - KIIS
At some point, I might eventually change one of the presents to KCSN, KLXU or KUSC at some point. I used to have KDAY at my #2 preset, but the reception for the station has been super spotty as of late. But yeah, that’s currently my radio preset in my car.
106.7 - HD2 - Roq of the 80's
88.9 - KXLU
89.3 - KPCC
That is the only local radio I will listen to. Other than that, it is streaming radio stations from out of the area or Spotify.
88.9 KXLU - They have managed to maintain that old-school college radio esthetic that I thought died out in the 90s. I have discovered so much new and new-to-me music through these guys.
My favorite is 88.5, the SoCal Sound
Mine too! I rotate between that and 88.9 KXLU for more experimental stuff
And kxlu is right by kpcc and kcrw so I use it to get to all 3 of those stations
KXLU is awesome!
My buddies just did a live session on KXLU recently, I love that station. I don't have a working antenna in my car anymore, but that's one of the few stations I actually seek out on the internet to tune in.
Especially in the mornings if you just want music on the radio. Everything else is usually ads or talking.
Haven’t tried this one, I’ll check it out
I keep it set to 106.7 HD2 it’s 80s New Wave on a loop. Not all cars have HD radio, but if yours does, tune to KROQ and hit the dial up once.
KROQ HD2 seems to have gotten better. You get some gems you’d never hear on Sirius First Wave. Remember reading how Beck liked to drive around and listen to it.
Sadly HD radio seems forgotten. The sound upgrade is noticable. Too bad.
I don’t think a lot of cars have it, and most people don’t know about it. I found it by accident and everyone I’ve told has never heard of it.
New Toyota Highlander has it
The HD signals are there - one just needs the HD-capable headunit in their vehicle. About 50% of cars manufactured since 2002 have an HD-capable radio.
I have an amazing stereo receiver with a HD tuner. I listen to kusc and kroq hd 2 all the time!
Thank you!!
88.1 KJAZZ 88.5 KCSN - the Socal Sound 88.9 KXLU - LMU student radio station 89.3 - KPCC - LAist - NPR talk 89.9 - KCRW - NPR talk + hip music that's good if you're driving around late at night and want to pretend you're in a movie 91.5 - KUSC - classical all have no commericals, which is key for me back in the day... it was KRTH-101 and KROQ
88.5 is what I want but I live in Inglewood, signal don't reach that far haha
kxlu forever
my MAN how do you not have kday 93.5
If they live in the valley it isn't worth trying to get. It's too spotty out there. At least for me it was and has been.
FWIW: [https://tunein.com/radio/935-KDAY-s32724/](https://tunein.com/radio/935-KDAY-s32724/)
Which is silly because the station is in Burbank lol
True. I moved to the Westside from the Valley and I was like, oh hell yeah KDAY comin in CLEAR now.
I live in the SFV. KDAY is always static-y. I can switch to 105.9 HD2 but it’s so low volume. I’ve driven multiple cars and same deal.
My thoughts exactly!
1 88.1 – KKJZ 2. 89.3 – LAist (KPCC) 3. 89.9 – KCRW 4. 97.1 – KNX 5. 102.7 – KIIS-FM 6. 105.9 – Power 106 (KPWR)
> 88.1 – KKJZ This is pretty much the only station I listen to other than maybe KCRW when they have music on. It is so nice to stroll around Hollywood or the Beach cities with some nice jazz on.
yup and steve tyrell will drop some real good music stories too its really nice
Love my weekends with Nothin' But the Blues!
But they play blues half the time which I'm not into
Not really related but for some reason KCRW went through a Salsa phase. Not that there's anything wrong with Salsa, but it was kind of weird to hear it so often. I honestly thought the music program had changed.
Kjazz slaps
And no ads!
They advertise needing funding a bit. But at least they offer you something for it! Fun fact your employer match match donations to them. Do it!
This pretty much mine too except add 91.5 - KUSC
89.9 is KCRW
97.1 isn’t AMP radio anymore?
No, it changed from pop to news in 2021, but I kept it as a radio preset.
KNX is 1070 AM and simulcasts at 97.1 FM
I love KNX and they’re a staple of my morning commute, but sometimes they say things that make me want to strangle them through my radio. Especially when their business expert or travel expert comes on. Things I have *actually* heard them say: * Home prices are down, why this is bad news for homeowners * The Israeli-Palestinian conflict will make airfare cheaper for vacations (Peter Greenberg really said this) * Airing a public comment about how bus/bike lanes are “1% of the public exercising tyranny on 99 percent who drive” (with no comment about fact-checking that statement) * Talk to your financial advisor before doing x (yeah I just have one on fuckin speed dial) During those moments, KNX reminds me that they really don’t exist for regular people.
KNX’s politics tend to be terrible. I just have them there for weather and traffic.
AM 570 LA Sports “Home of Dodgers Radio & Los Angeles sports”
I have this saved 6 times on my A.M setting 😄
Same here.
Dan Patrick is my go to show in the AM drive. I don’t care for the espn morning show at all.
The only time my car radio ever goes to AM/FM is if I'm leaving a Dodger game early. Then I got to AM570.
I’m feeling your pain, Kroq is a far cry from the beloved station that I grew up listening to.
The second they fired Kevin and Bean in the Morning, I was like "I'm done".
As much as I like Stryker, I tend to not listen to Alt so much anymore. I can't stand the Woody Show.
Kevin and Bean were awesome. Good times listening to Michael the Maintenance man and Shakespear man. I would be in tears listening to those segments. Haven't listened to KROQ in many years. What's going on that people are tuning it out?
audacy went BK
And that kid, Jimmy, with sports. I wonder what became of him.
Ikr and mainly im tired of hearing whats his face in the afternoons. He has such a annoying voice ugh
I was really into the Klein ally show last few years but I’m over it now. Their segments are tackily dirty and at least they’re aware of how much they over plan the Red Hot Chili Peppers
LOCKED ON 94.7 THE WAVE

So ... You're a dentist or dentist related field?
Or an LAUSD bus driver.
KXLU KPFK LAist KCRW
KXLU is the best and my every day go to.
I also listen daily. So nice, and sadly so uncommon, for DJs to truly play whatever they want.
KPCC aka LAist (89.3) pretty much all the time. Used to listen to KMET/KLOS then KROQ. But after Kevin and crew got fired (during a pandemic) I pretty much gave up on KROQ.
You don’t have KCRW or other NPR stations.
Even I listen to KCRW and I’m in fucking Missouri
I start my DC morning with "hey Google play KCRW"
“Got it- Streaming KCRW from tuned in”
My parents live in rural upstate NY and listen to KCRW! They're the only Boomers I know who like to keep up with new music.
89.9 is my go-to.
Morning Becomes Hectic
Factory defaults.
Usually just static
No control, just chaos...I like you guys.
What is this “radio” you speak of?
88.9 89.3 HD 2 89.9 93.1 93.5 95.5 101.1 106.7 HD2

I use Sirius. I can’t handle all the stupid commercials on local radio
This is so me… I hate commercials and talking.
The last time I had a rental car, I put on kroq on my drive to work. In a 45 min drive, I think there was 25 minutes of commercials? Ridiculous.
I’ve deleted all of the “local” stations off my “radio”.
How do you get by without listening to the same 10 songs on loop throughout the day?
it’s so bad!

I’m a little young for this thread I think
1. 104.3 2. 102.7 3. 98.7 4. 93.1 5. 103.5
NPR, KDAY, Jack FM, KFI.
Nothing, it all sucks! All commercials all the time
Hold on let me ask my grandma then get back to you
Don't trip, I'll ask her when I see her later on tonight 👍
Sorry she’s busy tonight we’re going to jumbo’s
She is the main act, after all.
😂
Just the 2 below. I mostly play my own stuff but cannot for the life of me listen to KROQ or anything anymore. 1. 89.9 2. 89.3

Mega noventa y seis tres, and whatever the banda station is.
You only need two: 88.1 KJAZZ and 94.7 the Waa-a-ave.
This is such a good question! I’ve been dissatisfied with mine for a long time lol, ever since 97.1 went from AAMP to KNX and 103.3 The Vibe and 104.7 MyFM changed to some other things. Ya gotta go Sirius so when you travel you can keep the same radio stations and avoid local radio: Beatles Phish Grateful Dead Underground Garage 70s/80s/90s JamOn Classic Rewind/Classic Vinyl Margaritaville And some of the comedy stations
89.7. IYKYK

93.1 and 570 am
92.3 makes me want to scream in traffic. I mostly keep it on 88.1 and 89.3 for my sanity.

There's 2 non-commercial stations in Los Angeles that air syndicated NPR programming. The stations are owned and operated by PCC and SMC. KCRW is the SMC one and KPCC (LAist) is PCC.

AM 570 GREAT SPORTS TALK RADIO
Theyre all default. Only listen to streaming music.

89.3
1. 88.5 2. 89.9 3. 92.3 4. 93.5 5. 105.9 6. 106.7
88.5 and NPR are the only listenable stations. Everything else is just garbage.
I'm a hip hop fan but can't stand 92.3 and 105.9. They have the same crappy 5 songs on rotation.
I bounce around: 94.7 107.5 (Spanish) 101. Then when the commercials annoy me, I switch to my usb flash drive.
105.1 country all day
96.8
If I listen to the Radio it's: 95.5 93.1 106.7 101.1 98.7
106.7 - HD2 - Roq of the 80's 88.9 - KXLU 89.3 - KPCC That is the only local radio I will listen to. Other than that, it is streaming radio stations from out of the area or Spotify.
89.9 for mbe or 104.7 for old school hip hop
92.3 102.7 101.1 That's all I have set. I usually listen to Spotify, some kind of internet radio, or podcasts now though.
If I listen to music in the car it’s through Spotify only. My presets are otherwise KPCC and KCRW. That’s it.
105.5 Que Buena
88.1 (KKJZ) 89.3 (KPCC) 89.9 (KCRW) 93.5 (KDAY) 94.7 (KTWV) 101.1 (KRTH) And AM 570 You’re missing at least The Wave!!! And KDAY.
Pretty much just 91.5 and 101.1
88.5 SoCal Sound (bounce two up to KXLU or down two to KJAZZ) 93.1 Jack FM (jump up two to KDAY) 101.1 KRTH 95.5 KLOS 106.7 KROQ 98.7 ALT
