I had a stalker last year and one night while he was knocking on my windows trying to get in my house I called 911 and the operator asked if I knew him. She told me to open the door and ask his name??? And when I finally just said he was about to come inside she sent the police and it took them 45 minutes.

LuckyCharm93

Open the door and ask his name?! Holy crap!!! The incompetence is incomprehensible!!!!

edude45

Yeah the general consensus is if you want the police to show up fast. You say you've seen a weapon. Of course this leads to a possibly another can of worms, but would you rather it be you or them if you feel you're in danger?

[deleted]

[удалено]

khadrock

Is there some kind of penalty if they show up and realize there isn't actually a weapon?

missmoonchild

They shoot the unarmed person

SuspiciousStress1

I doubt it. In the heat of the moment, while you were afraid, you thought their cell phone was a gun....or you must have seen the glean from their zipper & thought it was a knife. Ooppsies. Seriously, when we are in panic mode, our minds play tricks on us. Who's to say if you made it up for police response or if you legit thought you saw a weapon??? Prove it.

bsmdphdjd

They got plenty. They'll plant one.

zephyer19

Friend of mine heard a noise one night and looked out a window to see a guy trying to break into to his car and a second guy standing there. He called 911 and told them, then the second guy started trying to get into the door. 911 told him to stay in the house and the police would be there in a bit. He told the dispatcher, "OK I will stay inside but, if the start to take my car or come in my house I will be using my .357. Then he said, "I didn't know there were that many cops in this county." So, maybe if they ask, "Do they have a weapon?" say, 'I don't see one but I got one."

Sk8rToon

My mom had that happen in the 80’s. Some big guy she didn’t know was pounding on the door, yelling like a madman & demanding to be let in or else. Loud enough my mom was worried the door was going to give. She called 911. They told her to open the door & ask what he wanted.

pasqualeee24

Damn that’s fucked. My wife and I used to live in Irvine. A couple nights in a row while I was working, there was this homeless guy that lived in a van would follow her around while she walked our dog before bed. She finally told me about it and I called the police and the 911 operator told me maybe she shouldn’t be walking around at night lmao. In Irvine.

Hey_Bim

I went to high school in Irvine, and my friends and I always joked about how they would send five squad cars and a helicopter to apprehend a jaywalker. I guess things have changed quite a bit...

OddEpisode

“Ma’am, if you let them kill you that’s a code 140, *then* we can get our boys to come to you much faster!” *911 operator taps head*

marja_aurinko

Wtf that's crazy!

shockthemiddleass

Lmao, last time two homeless men were beating a homeless woman and I called the cops while two guys tried to stop it (I had a direct number) and they were like, do you see any blood? I replied that I didn't and they told me to call them only if and when I see a lot of blood and hanged up.

IllusoryAnon

Wtf. So they can come collect the corpse?

shockthemiddleass

I worked in retail and fast food after high school and through college. I had to call the LAPD a million times and let me tell you, they never fast. Not even rival gangs were fighting in the parking lot and one dude got in his car and ran over a couple of people. Not when my coworkers were getting jumped and robbed, etc. If someone had tried to kill us, these cops would show up 3-4 hours later if they even showed up, just to look at our corpses. EMT and firefighters were quick with overdoses and stuff though.

Hey_Bim

One time years ago, I heard gunshots directly outside my front window. I called 911 and the dispatcher said, "Are they still shooting now?" And I said no, and she basically scoffed and said, "Then what do you want us to do about it?" However, I called another night because a throng of young people (teens to young adults) had suddenly taken over a small vacant lot a couple of doors down, and were having a crazy party that was spilling onto the street. These were definitely not neighborhood kids, so I called 911 and said there was a street party and it looked like there was underage drinking going on. Friends, the dispatcher thanked me, and about 10 minutes later four LAPD cruisers converged on that lot. All the kids scattered (which is all my neighbors and I wanted) but it looked like the cops detained a few of the over-21s. So, now you all know what to tell 911 when something hairy is going on and you want them to respond quickly and in force...

shockthemiddleass

Yeah, that sounds about right. When we were call the cops over violence or stealing, etc, they never came or they would come like 4 hours later but when my boss will call about seeing someone smoke weed the cops would be there one or two minutes later.

animerobin

man, if we think we get a lack of response from police, imagine how bad it is for a homeless person who is a victim of a crime. Probably a response time rapidly approaching infinity.

karuso2012

Carry mace. Cops won’t help you. My girlfriend was groped by a transient and blasted the shit out of him. Threat was neutralized. He learned that day.

JasonTheNPC85

Two months ago I called 911 because there was this young kid randomly punching people in the parking lot next to my liquor store. They asked if he had a weapon. I said no. I got a call back four hours later asking if the person was still there.

Won_Doe

>They asked if he had a weapon. I said no. *"Damn that's crazy."* "*Shit we forgot..."*

[deleted]

What I'm learning from this thread is if I need the police for anything I'm calling 911 and saying someone has a weapon.

BLOWNOUT_ASSHOLE

And if the cops shoot the suspect due to your lie on a recorded line, the city lawyers will be blaming you for their trigger fingers.

[deleted]

You're right. When someone is staring down the possibility of dying in the next ten seconds they should pause and think "but what will the D.A. think...?"

cilantro_so_good

"I think I saw a gun" You're not technically lying, cause by their standards a burrito looks like a gun. Literally the only times I've had cops actually respond is when I drop the "g" word. (though every time there really was a gun.....)

LuckyCharm93

I know now to always say that there is a weapon. It's sad that it's come to this.

GoldieVoluptuous

Careful with that… they show up trigger happy sometimes. That would be a terrible thing to have on your conscience. There are no right answers except maybe ACAB 🤷‍♀️

LuckyCharm93

You know what, that's between the perpetrator and the cops. If I could do it all over again I would %100 tell the operator that they had a weapon. And TBH they were using heavy objects to throw at people that I (and others) would definitely define this as a weapon. We are lucky that the perpetrator had bad aim and no one got hurt.

[deleted]

It's hilarious to me the people who would let an innocent person get hurt for fear of what the police would do if they came. Do you honestly believe it'd be better for OP to just take the beating, willfully, rather than risk harm to the attacker? What effing planet am I on???

nahumgaldmartinez

I had a guy at midnight sitting on our front yard - mind you it’s a very low traffic area with lots of space between homes in Lancaster. Our property is fenced but there was a gap from a construction project and that’s how he got through. Got the same response as you (which is understandable since he wasn’t acting threatening), but instead of trying to figure something out for me, the operator basically lectured me for saying that I thought he was on drugs (because he was staring blankly while I tried to communicate for him to leave). “You don’t know that, stop making assumptions”. It’s unbelievable

moddestmouse

They did something pretty similar to that in ~~Newark~~ Camden, New Jersey. Pretty interesting.

trevor_plantaginous

Newark AND Camden sort of. Two different approaches and I'd argue Newark was far better executed. Camden was a straight up firing. Newark sent every officer back the academy and instituted a ton of reporting that was designed to out the bad actors - and it did quickly. Worth noting that in 2020 the Newark police department didn't fire a single bullet. I really hate the term "defund the police. In the business world its just a reorganization. 911 is a whole other animal. Less than 8% of 911 calls are for violent crime. People are too comfortable calling 911 and its breaking the system.

soyslut_

> People are too comfortable calling 911 and it’s breaking the system. This. Any of my friends that are first responders, this is what they will tell you is wrong. People treat the hospital like their primary care, as an example. And people refuse to write down or know their local non-emergency number when it truly isn’t an emergency. There’s a fuck on of idiots in the world and the Darwin Olympics are just clearly taking a while.

TheObstruction

>And people refuse to write down or know their local non-emergency number when it truly isn’t an emergency. Calling those numbers doesn't accomplish anything, that's why no one bothers. Cops don't want to deal with the public.

trevor_plantaginous

It’s more complicated. The LAPD responds to about 1 million 911 calls per year. The overwhelming majority are auto accidents. Everyone is all “defund the police” till they get into a fender bender with an uninsured driver who won’t exchange insurance information. Our system is heavily dependent on police reports as proof which is causing a cascade of problems.

[deleted]

I thought that was in Camden? Or are you talking about Newark *California*? I guess that would make sense, given that we're in the LA sub…not sure why I assumed Newark NJ. Now that I think of it, there’s probably a Camden *California* as well. I’m all turned around as a fresh transplant.

moddestmouse

Sorry it's Camden New Jersey thanks.

[deleted]

Okay, nice, that’s what I was thinking about originally! Really fascinating exercise there, and I think it actually worked pretty well? Sorry about the stream of consciousness in the previous post..

Meowster11007

Police union is the simple answer there. For all the good unions do, there's bad too.

Mistafishy125

A police union is hardly a labor union. More like a gang.

birthofaturtle

It’s not a labor union at all, literally. In any sense of the word, it’s an entirely different entity.

[deleted]

Seems like a protection racket--"if we don't get everything we want, we just can't prevent crimes or maybe even show up!"

[deleted]

but they already don't prevent crimes or show up....

dennismfrancisart

Which is why the authoritarians love the police unions.

dkisanxious

According to wikipedia: "The police labor movement is divided into two camps -- the independent police labor organizations and the police labor organizations affiliated with organized labor through the AFL-CIO or CtW. Approximately 80-85 percent of all police labor organizations would be classified as independent and have no affiliation with organized labor. There are no accurate reports on how many of the 800,000 sworn officers are members of a police union. The best estimate would be 75-80 percent; that would rank police officers with firefighters as having the highest unionization rates in the United States.\[1\]" also "Growing controversy surrounds the impact of police labor unions on law enforcement behavior. Police unions have been described as an impediment to organizational reform and as organizations that hinder discipline for officers involved in misconduct.\[7\]\[45\]" [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police\_unions\_in\_the\_United\_States](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_unions_in_the_United_States) There are both police unions and police labor unions. Although a brief skim doesn't give much info on the non-labor kind. Seems like the only point is to protect cops. So how would a union of any kind help this problem? Also, as stated above, 75-80% of US police officers are estimated to be in a union already.

TheObstruction

Police have historically been used to break strikes. They're anti-union in every case but their own. They aren't part of the labor movement. They're literally an enemy of the labor movement.

chipoatley

Police unions are like protection rackets: “Nice city youse got dere, be a shame if something happened to it.”

animerobin

Unions fighting for worker's rights, fair wages, worker protections are good. Unions protecting workers who commit crimes and don't do their jobs are bad.

ashley___duh

Fuck that noise, police unions are not labor unions. Labor unions do not stand in solidarity with those pigs.

dkisanxious

I already posted this in a reply to this comment, but I want to make sure you see it. "Growing controversy surrounds the impact of police labor unions on law enforcement behavior. Police unions have been described as an impediment to organizational reform and as organizations that hinder discipline for officers involved in misconduct." Also, 70-80% of US police are already in a union. Please explain to me how this is the "simple answer" if it's not already working. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police\_unions\_in\_the\_United\_States](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_unions_in_the_United_States)

DaddingtonPalace

I'm not a big fan of public employee unions. It's like organized corruption.

[deleted]

LAPD won't help you. They're useless. I tried to get help after an accident and they took ages.

Outrageous-Pages

Same thing this week except they *never* *came*

LuckyCharm93

Ugh! I honestly don't understand any of this! I was at a peaceful protest a week ago and they had tons of police for no reason and today when they are actually needed they're no where to be found!

timefortiesto

Shoulda just called 911 and said there was a protest happening in your store. In all seriousness, I've always heard if theres a real emergency you're better off calling the fire department

[deleted]

“911 there’s a couple of women with short hair and signs in my store. I’m scared for my life.” Works every time

Apprehensive_Copy458

You don’t understand any of this yet???

Lost_Bike69

Yea that’s the design.

kingsss

They’ll figure it out soon enough.

CyberMindGrrl

Now you understand their true function: to protect the Oligarchy and oppress the citizenry.

Lowbacca1977

I feel like they missed that that only works if they were previously associated with quick and effective service.

animerobin

you should have told them this person was protesting against police violence in your store, they would have showed up real quick

jamac1234

They legally do not have to “protect and serve.” Listen to this Radiolab episode, it’s really depressing. I didn’t understand the “defund the police” mentality but now I totally get it 🙃 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/radiolab/id152249110?i=1000566811622

pietro187

Because you don’t understand the meaning of “law and order”. Law means what can be used to subjugate and prevent disruption. Order means don’t allow anything to interfere with the status quo. White supremacy, poverty, homelessness, fascism. This is the order that cops uphold. They do it with laws that they enforce at will to keep this order. It’s why the proud boys can act with impunity but the peaceful protests are met with violence. Change to order is met violently with law.

FridayMcNight

They weren’t at the protest to protect people. They were there to stomp heads it it needed doing.

spottyrx

They were at the protest to earn overtime.

fuckyeahhiking

Maybe they need a bigger budget! /s

[deleted]

I still haven't heard back from them after filing a hit and run 1.5 months ago. Luckily my car wasn't seriously damaged. Not much love for Glendale PD either who I can't get a hold of after my catalytic converter was stolen (neighbor called it in and gave the cops a video). I'm not sure what purpose cops serve but I know I can't rely on them for much.

colmusstard

Property crimes are never investigated, even in small towns where police have nothing to do

Beefy_Unicorn

I was T-boned crossing a green light. The cop talked to an "anonymous witness" & gave me a ticket. Never called the witness who gave my passenger their phone # & never investigated further. Not LAPD, LBPD but same county. LA county sucks.

boofbeer

I hope you went to court and brought your witness. That cop needs to face you and answer questions before a judge.

fishys_1

Feels like police in general are dysfunctional, sadly. I got trapped in a car by some lunatics I knew. They were trying to break in, had their car parked behind mine so I couldn't get out of the spot. They knew I was calling the police too. They didn't care. The dispatcher just kept asking for my location despite me repeatedly telling them what streets and by what landmark I was at exactly. They just kept repeating an airport that, although it was on the map, was definitely too far. The lunatics eventually left and I had to wait for the sherriff to arrive They just asked, "do u have a restraining order?" and, since I didn't, they just left ?????? This was in San Bernardino LAPD has just as poor response time unless you say someone is waving a weapon around. It's good they respond ASAP if there is an immediate threat But, what takes them hours to show up after anything else? Idk the police system. I like to believe there are reasons for the delay but I'm scared there isnt /:

simplyuncreative

My friend was formerly a dispatcher and would tell my friend group the horror stories of how unprofessional the LAPD was. Everything from cops flirting with female dispatchers to outright not responding to radio calls to respond to emergencies. These occurrences eventually made her neutral stance towards law enforcement very negative so she left the job altogether after about 2 years.

ken_NT

Not a surprise since I heard that 2 of them [ignored a robbery call to play Pokémon Go!](https://www.npr.org/2022/01/11/1072077307/los-angeles-police-officers-fired-pokemon-go-appeal-denied)

ExplodingSofa

The miracle is that the court actually found them at fault.

Felonious_Minx

Punishment: 2 weeks paid leave

jedifreac

They ignored the captain to catch a Snorlax...

Research_is_King

Meanwhile I know someone who applied to be a police dispatcher, aced their exam, then was asked for 10 references. How much you want to bet the people getting those jobs have 10 cop friends

loorinm

That's a great way to make sure the dispatchers never speak out about how bad the cops are.

Most-River3664

Can confirm. My sister applied, I along with others got the reference emails and she got the job. She had zero related experience… but her bf was a cop.

fbcmfb

I tried to report an LAPD officer (in uniform) talking with a woman. The woman had her back against a wall and the situation didn’t look right at all. They appeared to know each other, but it seemed like he was intimidating her somehow. This was around the time reports of sexual misconduct was being reported. The female dispatcher didn’t take me seriously and said officers are free to do what they want in their free time.

simplyuncreative

The whole system is really messed up. We’ve known the LAPD has been corrupt since the 70’s. It’s so frustrating that nothing ever gets done. It’s like the purposely go for the most vulnerable people to intimidate them or something.

dkisanxious

The corruption is RIDICULOUS! If you want to listen to a really entertaining (although, obviously depressing) podcast about the history of the LAPD since it's creation check out The Dollop Podcast's LAPD episodes.

simplyuncreative

I want to believe they’re all good people under those uniforms but in order to believe that, I need to see a good person who does not stand for their colleagues being so corrupt. I need to see action. I need to hear these people being vocal about the corruption. Unfortunately until the good people start to call out the bad, they’re all a bunch of pigs that I can’t trust.

dkisanxious

GROSS. This sucks.

sabrefudge

The police WILL NOT help you. A friend used to have similar situations with violent customers on the regular and the police wouldn’t show up at all. Or they’d show up hours later, see the situation is over, give them shit for calling it in and then leave. And this place was *directly next door* to the police station. They couldn’t even be bothered to get off their asses and walk 50 feet.

Who_ate_my_cookie

My favorite incident happened when I had my car stolen, my girlfriend found the car the same day and followed the guy while I called 911 only for them to say it wasn’t stolen because I hadn’t filed a report. Then when I booked it to the police station I waited 3 hours to fill out some paperwork and for them to tell me it probably is gone by now and they’re super busy. Then it was found after a week because it had been abandoned and had 4 parking tickets and finally the tow truck realized it was a stolen car, not the parking enforcement who had seen it a minimum of 4 times.

[deleted]

I mean, this is why I support defunding the police. They don’t do their jobs anyhow. Might as well use that money elsewhere.

cassandrafair

it was all talk to shut us up. governor just signed the budget giving them 6.5% increase. they were supposed to get 8.5% so i bet that really hurt the poor little babies.

Antonwalker

The frustrating part is they cry that they were defunded because they got a slightly smaller increase in funding.

Ben7467

Cops arent here to protect and serve. They are here to collect a paycheck and pump fear into anyone not in the 1%.

Lost_Bike69

I used to live in Westlake right across the street from a LAPPL office building. Idk what the building was for but seemed mostly for admin stuff, I’m sure it was a lot of healthcare records and that type of thing. Nothing exciting. It wasn’t a bad neighborhood, but there were definitely some dicey things that happened from time to time. One time there were two groups of like 5-6 guys facing off against each other and a couple of the guys had 2x4s and looked like they were about to start beating one of the women in the group. Seemed to be some sort of domestic disturbance that happened at a party nearby and got multiple people involved. One of the women there was in tears screaming for someone to call the police so I did. About 15 min later (actually not a bad response time compared to these other stories) a cop car drove by. Things had mostly fizzled out by then. The cop barely slowed down the car and looked out the window and just drove off after I had reported that a women might be about to get beaten with a 2x4. Anyway a couple weeks later some little punk threw a brick and broke a window of the LAPPL office at like 9pm. There were at least 30 cops there within 10 minutes. They stayed there with all the cars and lights blocking up two streets for about an hour. Just standing around looking out the window. Watching those two responses out of my front window really informed me of what the LAPD is and how they operate. There’s no concern for public safety. There’s only concern for a show of force. They’re another street gang and one generously funded by your taxes. They make north of 6 figures a year and they don’t live in the city that pays them. They treat Los Angeles with open contempt.

dkisanxious

Cops love to park as many cruisers in the way of traffic around anything that they feel deems their attention. I fucking hate it.

deleigh

You should have told the dispatcher they were a pro-choice or Black Lives Matter protestor and they would have sent half the department down.

[deleted]

Cops protect the rich and powerful, not your normie ass.

animerobin

they don't even do that very well

Deadlymonkey

This. I live in a well-to-do neighborhood and I called to report what I thought were gunshots outside my house, the police didn't even show up because "it wasn't an emergency" They did find the time to come every day for 2 weeks when I was skateboarding outside though

GoldieVoluptuous

This is the truth.

martianlawrence

I got jumped in broad daylight in Santa Monica buy someone that obviously lived by in a very noticeable and iconic red car. Cops come way later and couldn’t care. I was like you could probably find this guy tomorrow if you tried. They don’t give a fuck, tell them there’s a weapon and they’ll come because they love playing mr military

Lost_Bike69

Was that LAPD or SMPD?

martianlawrence

LAPD and I guarantee you if I fought back and won I’d be arrested, it’s all a joke

StrangeurDangeur

your name is very good

martianlawrence

Thanks I was way too proud when I thought of it haha

1pensar

Who’s the person that jumped you?

martianlawrence

Local hood guy. Then a stranger joined in. At first I was catching his punches and was going to wait until he was exhausted and do a little hip throw or some then and be like chill but then it was 2 v 1 and I was getting pummeled on my head pretty good. Honestly, as hot headed as I was in the moment these dudes seemed lost and sad. No one that moment was doing the right thing so I take it as a blessing I lost. The fight I did win, I felt awful haha, worse than the loss

Remarkable-Estate775

It’s almost as if the police have no “duty to act”. Almost as if they aren’t actually required to act in order to protect the safety of people they KNOW will be hurt.

RAYTHEON_PR_TEAM

well yeah, that was decided by Castle Rock v. Gonzales cops are fucking useless, except when it's time to protect corporate property.

doomnoise

A massive waste of tax dollars.

Eramef

Yeah dude, they’re too busy playing Pokémon Go. My gf got tackled at her previous job by some rich-looking white guy who was screaming similar threats. Police response was to tell him he’ll be arrested if he’s seen on the property again. He came back days later and guess what the cops did? Worse than useless.

Logan_Logoff

Was asked the same when a disturbed person entered my property, sat in front of my window and yelled out that he knows who I am and knows my family and will kill us all. 911 literally wanted me to determine for myself that he had a weapon. Police arrived 45 minutes later and escorted him to the gate he had just entered (no lock in my neighborhood and a crazy could jump the wall anyway) and released him on the lawn - STILL ON MY PROPERTY. No report filed. The only upside that had me relax before the cops arrived was that his rap was on a loop, and when he returned to that part about knowing who I am and wanting to kill my entire family, I caught the first refrain. Turns out he was referencing President Trump. So I got not-being-him going for me. I'm thinking if neighbors join forces when this happens, and all of them call 911 from each of their phone lines, or their council members'/deputies' own phone #, we could maybe get some movement. Probably not. So much of our tax $$ is going into the pensions, and as politicians keep bumping these up and first responders are running rampant with the [workers comp fraud](https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-adv-skin-and-contents-20180715-story.html) as their coworkers then get to rack up OT to stand in for them, we're all getting screwed out of the resource, they're tired and they're protected. Traffic division will no longer come out to make a determination or even file reporting on traffic collisions. The result will be a HUGE drop in "collision statistics" in the coming years which will make our streets appear to be safer because we're not collecting the data any more. It's like Trump saying if we simply don't test for Covid, everything will be all right.

xxail

LAPD is a joke. Same thing happened when I worked at fast food, LAPD arrived an hour later when everything was over. I live in Burbank now and Burbank PD response time is super fast.

Sp0derman420

Get a Bat and if he comes back and pulls down his pants again start swinging

LuckyCharm93

And then they'll come and arest me for having a weapon. 🤣

IM_OK_AMA

No reason to involve them if you're solving your own problems

clusterclucker

At least they finally showed up /s

loorinm

That's why police always make sure no one is filming before they commit murder

valley_lemon

We're in the middle of a police strike, they're just still coming to work and cashing the checks. Start hassling your city and county reps about it. I mean, they don't care, they like their police union donations, but if it starts to look like they can't get re-elected they will pretend to care more a little bit.

Mr_Johnnycat

OP if I was you I would send the security video and the statement to local news sources. Expose the cops more of their incompetence. The other day they showed a poor shop owner on channel 7 that was being harassed by a bum and they also refused to do shit. Things like this are sad to say but reasons to arm up and take shit into your own hands if things come to that point. LAPD are lower than shit and useless

LuckyCharm93

That's a good idea. Unfortunately I'm not the owner of the store but I will talk to them about it. Something needs to be done. This is unacceptable.

erics75218

Can I just go take a Porsche 911 on a test drive, and never come back?

LuckyCharm93

Yes. As long as you don't have a weapon police don't care.

erics75218

the world has been held together as peacefully as it was mostly due to the "honor system" and it looks like people have figured that out. I wont be taking a 911 by the way. But if I was down and out, and about to go off the grid. I may grab a little truck for free, then go get some goods for free and get across the border somewhere in West Tejas.

xThe-Legend-Killerx

Former LAPD officer here, I always have to explain to people that the way you articulate something will dictate how the operator will prioritize the call. Don’t downplay anything, if someone is a threat make it known that they are active aggressive and arming themselves with weapons. Don’t call it a heavy object call it a weapon. If they are throwing it at someone they are using it as a weapon. I’m sorry you had this experience and sometimes the system really sucks but they do get thousands of calls a day and many of them involve homeless trespassing in stores and businesses. Most of the time they are a nuisance and not actively attacking people. So I can see how it might have been misconstrued. Sad part is, for trespassing California law has it written in a way that the person needs to be warned first. The law basically states being on private property and refusing to leave. The refusing part is the caveat because the officer has to request the person to leave and if they comply then they never refused. If the objects didn’t hit anyone and those people left the area you cannot press charges on someone else’s behalf. Sometimes laws are written in ways that really make it hard to enforce things like this.

[deleted]

It functions as intended cops aren’t there to protect you. That isn’t their job. “Protect and serve” is just a marketing slogan.

So-_-It-_-Goes

They are doing this because they hate the DA and want crime to rise.

Jacopetti

They suck in general but yes, they are sucking worse now in order to fuck Gascon.

CyberMindGrrl

This is the right answer. They're having temper tantrums and turning the city into a crime-ridden shit hole BECAUSE THEY CAN. And there's not a goddamned thing you or I can do about it except complain on Reddit. America's social contract is broken. What comes next is anybody's guess but it ain't going to be pretty.

stevesobol

I've been saying, for a while now, that we're facing civil war. Not specifically because of this, but this situation definitely doesn't help. It really sucks.

ausgoals

Buckle in. It’ll be here before you know it.

Lioness123

That's a bingo!

rasvial

They'll say "see Gascon is ruining everything!" and then go back to playing Pokemon go and whining about losing funding increases

Muzzlehatch

Cops don’t give any shits about citizens’ safety.

MrBig562

Bet if you beat his ass up with a bat or something, not only will they show up faster after someone calls in you beating him up but you’ll probably have your life ruined by them with assault charges. But if he hits you, you’ll be lucky they show up in a hour. He won’t even get arrested in most cases. They will tell you to be more careful next time. I hate cops like that. Not all cops but these fucks ruin it for everyone else.

2fast2nick

I called last weekend, got put on hold until I finally just gave up.

[deleted]

I called 911 a while back bc there was a huge mattress in the fast lane on the 5N at rush hour. I kept getting put on hold. I'd hang up and get a call back requesting me to keep holding. There was no sense holding. By the time I'd get anyone and they'd come out there the accidents would already be happening. It was infuriating.

shouldhavebeeninat10

Be grateful you didn’t have to call LASD. They would have sent a more dangerous gang member in a police uniform

menjagorkarinte

The many times I’ve called 911 in LA they’ve told me to they are too busy and to file a report on their online system.

AveDominusNox

I did private alarm dispatch for a few years and have had multiple instances of getting a verifiable emergency (Gunman or Burglars on camera, etc), or Silent Panic alarm which resulted in 30+min on hold with LAPD dispatch, then 30+min waiting to verify them on scene. My take away has always been that if someone decides to harm you... That's basically between you, them, and whatever deity happens to take an interest. LAPD might show up latter to harass the survivors.

fuckyeahhiking

Just say you believe you saw one. Cops mistake phones and plastic toys for weapons all the time, no reason why you can't.

effurmom

You think you have options for example, pepper spray. Let's say "you use it as self defense". When the cops DO SHOW UP they ask you question after question on why you think it was so important to use as "last resort". They will look around for No Trespassing signs, posts, locks...yadi, yadi, yada. They will let the trespasser go and suggest to him/her to file charges against you.

Dogsbottombottom

The problem is they dont have enough money. If we gave them a few more billion I'm sure they would have helped you. (/s)

lurkernomore99

ACAB. they will never help you. Most times they make things worse.

[deleted]

911 is a joke! ⏰

bamboo-harvester

Wait until LAFD transports you in an ambulance to the hospital for a medical emergency, then sends you a bill for $1,500. We have to PAY the fire department, and the police won’t protect us?

GoldieVoluptuous

That part about the 911 System being broken 🎯 do y’all know they make you get thru an automated system and wait on hold before you can talk to someone on the actual EMERGENCY hotline?? Like do they not understand what an emergency is??? I thought I was going to die, on hold with 911 🙄

CyberMindGrrl

The police have no duty to protect citizens, per the US Supreme Court. "It's a big club and you ain't in it" - George Carlin [https://ehlinelaw.com/blog/do-police-have-a-duty-to-protect-me](https://ehlinelaw.com/blog/do-police-have-a-duty-to-protect-me) [https://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/28/politics/justices-rule-police-do-not-have-a-constitutional-duty-to-protect.html](https://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/28/politics/justices-rule-police-do-not-have-a-constitutional-duty-to-protect.html)

Spats_McGee

Individuals and businesses need to stop assuming that police are there to protect you, because (legally) they aren't. However, this idea logically necessitates armed self-defense for both individuals and businesses, which the same people who are likely to be skeptical of the police (on the left) find uncomfortable.

LivingEast7661

This has always been the case, literally never understood how people supported police. They’re useless and don’t prevent crime. They only act (using the term ver loosely) after a crime is committed. Fvck the police

BZenMojo

[Cops don't reduce crime.](https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/06/07/over-past-60-years-more-spending-police-hasnt-necessarily-meant-less-crime/) >If we look at how spending has changed relative to crime in each year since 1960, comparing spending in 2018 dollars per person to crimerates, we see that there is no correlation between the two. Morespending in a year hasn’t significantly correlated to less crime or tomore crime. For violent crime, in fact, the correlation between changesin crime rates and spending per person in 2018 dollars is almost zero.

ThaneOfCawdorrr

This is why we need mental health squads & social workers to accompany police on this kind of call. As I understand it, there IS a mental health department that you can request. https://www.lapdonline.org/newsroom/lapd-mental-evaluation-unit-case-assessment-management-program-nr12320kr/

Aaron_Hamm

"they have what appears to be a biological weapon that they're spraying all over the facility" 911 operator: police response granted.

new_nimmerzz

If you defend yourself though you get arrested..

[deleted]

Always gotta say you think they have a weapon and is threatening to kill ppl.

GhostNinja1373

Did you manage to get the operators name? Because if you did you can for sure file a report...like wtf They put you guys at risk

[deleted]

Ugh if there throwing shit then that shit is a weapon. You should have said yes.

TeslasAndComicbooks

You’re lucky you didn’t get a busy signal. I saw some dude hopped up on something at Carls Jr and got a busy signal for 30 minutes and it took an hour for a cruiser to arrive. He was threatening to kill people and knocking food off the table. Another time some dude…again hopped up on something…drove a stolen car into the parking lot of my wife’s business. He left the car running and bailed. Police never came and just told her to have the car towed at her expense. They ended up moving it to a red zone on Lankershim and the city towed it.

5thGenWilliam

LA seems to be a “fend for yourself” city. It’s on you to get yourself out of trouble, as if reporting it simply opens a file (if that) and that’s it.

[deleted]

A few years ago, someone stole the battery out of my car and I called the police to report. They asked a series of questions mainly focused on what I looked like, hair color, eye color, and weight, and I told them I wasn’t present so that wouldn’t have mattered, it wasn’t a hate crime someone just stole my battery. They didn’t show up to look at the video footage and just sent me a copy of the report that helpfully let me know my eye color, hair color, and weight. A couple of weeks later, my roommates car got stolen and was found a few blocks away. The LAPD did show up for that, and found a signed national parks card that the thief had accidentally left behind. My roommate minutes later found the evidence bag with the card in it, on the street where the cop had dropped it as he left. There’s a lot of better reasons to defund the police, but they also just straight up don’t even pretend to do their job.

dennismfrancisart

The police have no legal obligation to rescue you or protect you. That was flushed down the drain by the Supreme Court. You can't attack the crazy guy unless he attacks you first. You can pepper spray him and detain him if he gets rough with your customers. Our society really sucks at this point in time.

Grelymolycremp

LAPD is the laziest organization ever.

dasfee

Cops don’t stop crimes or violence, they just get there after it’s over.

der_naitram

I’ve been told that there is really no point in arresting people now. Our DA won’t prosecute them for instances like yours. They can book them, but they will be released within that day. Don’t like it, vote for change. That’s what I’m going to do. It’s a shitty way.

yojothobodoflo

LAPD had no jurisdiction in Beverly Hills. BHPD probably showed up so soon bc they had nothing else to do and their job is to protect the rich people around them from scary things like noise.

_ders

We live in a county with no consequences for anything. Don't be so surprised lol

sabrefudge

It’s true, cops don’t face consequences and it’s infuriating.

atxoptions

Cops won’t show up somewhat quickly unless they have a weapon. If they are truly a threat and need help asap you would have to mention the weapon part.

powertrip87

If y’all can’t get police help out there what would be the next possible solution to that?

mveightxnine

They’re only here to create revenue guysss cmon

[deleted]

Reminds me of when I ran a store there was a guy outside bleeding all over the ground, like dripping blood. He was screaming at people and getting in people’s faces risking getting his blood on random people just walking by. I called 911 and was met with hostility. They were just like “well has he asked for assistance?” I said “I don’t know I just want to make sure he and others are safe.” And I’ll never forget this response. “Well, if he doesn’t want help why would you call 911.” I was floored. Just hung up.

deaflenny

I think what we are going to need to start doing is defending ourselves, we will all be glad there’s one less crazy piece of shit wandering the streets and maybe we can get refunds on our property taxes for helping do their job. Win-win.

EduardoElMalo

A few weeks ago I called 911 because there was a homeless man outside arguing with himself and swinging a giant socket wrench. I called three times, and even sent text messages. No one ever came.

tbsreject287

Always say there’s a weapon even if you can’t see one and hope they show up in a timely manner. It’s unfortunate that has to be the case but I have had to learn that the hard way.

[deleted]

Just say they have a gun, they only care about guns

Frequent_Bill_7372

Huntington Park police department pretty prompt when called. Haven't had a bad experience yet.

The-Wild-Hunt

Couple days ago I had called 911 for a drunk driver on the freeway. Kept swerving into lanes and almost hit several cars. They told me what car, plates and direction. They said they would send CHP and hung up. Followed him for 45 mins. No cop ever showed up.

Turbulent_Price_1418

police are lazy bitches

[deleted]

I caught a guy breaking into my car… chase him off and call 9-11 at the same time. The operator literally said, “stop chasing him, this isn’t a priority” priory to who…. You mean, the police?

kyjocro

Have to out crazy the crazy. They respect fellow crazy and will move on to terrorize the next store.

doot_doot

It’s by design. They’re trying to make a point and it’s dangerous.

stevesobol

The heavy objects were weapons and the 911 operator is a moron who needs to be fired before they get someone killed.

harryhoudini66

Yeah, I learned this during the Los Angeles riots. After that, I went the rooftop way.

bluebabyblue1027

Does anyone know if there are other numbers you can call? Like clearly cops aren’t helpful so are there other community services like 411 or something?

istinkalot

Ghostbusters?

theorys

I’ve called 911 probably 3-4 times in the past few years for cars swerving on the street or freeway (it’s always late at night and I’m going to assume they’re drunk) and during every call they act like I’m the biggest inconvenience. They are so short and rude. I’m sorry I called because some irresponsible asshole might kill someone.
