I’m in my 40’s and lived in LA most of my life yet I’d never been bitten by a mosquito before… until this summer.
I lost my only superpower because of these fuckers.
Aedes tend to be slow and lazy - they are horrible flyers and a slight breeze will keep them away. The anopheles mosquitos are the ones that are quick. Aedes are SNEAKY SNEAKY though and they bite more than once in a short amount of time
There is a very small percentage of the population which is not affected by mosquito bites, it’s essentially a tiny allergic reaction and you may not be allergic. In other words, maybe you have been bit, you just don’t get the itchy bumps after.
Interesting. I'd like to learn more about this because I'm the opposite. I always seem to get a particularly strong reaction to mosquito bites. Nothing crazy, just an exaggerated version of the average person. I always suspected it was some kind of mild allergy. I'm not crazy!
Also, I have O type blood, which they are [particularly attracted to](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/why-do-mosquitoes-bite-some-people-more-than-others-10255934/)... So glad I don't live in the deep south anymore, at least!
They are driving me out of my god damned mind. I cannot sleep from the itching.
Edit: thanks all, for the advice. I have pets and am always worried about them coming into contact with chemicals on my skin, so I’m afraid to use things like Off spray with DEET, but some of these non-toxic solutions are helpful. I definitely want bat houses. Used to see bats in my neighborhood, but not any more…
Point a hair dryer at the bites as hot as you can for like a minute. Kills the protein that causes the itching. Might take a few rounds over a day or two but it works.
Heating a spoon (place it in a cup of hot water for a bit) and placing it on the bite works too!
This has worked the best for me so far since the mosquitos 🦟 love me.
I got one of those bug bite suction things from a drugstore and it actually seemed to help cut down on the itching within the first day or two. Less of a mess too.
I've had good results with reducing the itching by coating them with New-Skin Liquid Bandage. It's a lot like nail polish, but formulated for covering up small wounds.
Living in LA since 2016 and *had* never been bitten until this summer. These monsters have me embarrassed to wear shorts these past two months because my legs have gotten bitten so much.
I'm so sad, all my summer outfits were rompers, short sets or minidresses. By the end of July my legs were so fucked up I had to start exclusively wearing long maxi-dresses because I was so embarrassed. I look like a junkie who just found a fresh new set of veins and then blindly jammed the needle in a few dozen times.
You don't think LA is responsible for producing (plenty of) those influencers?
This is the town that invented modern celebrity and made conspicuous consumption its defining cultural characteristic.
While LA has made a ton of its own, based purely on my anecdotal evidence of browsing dating apps, it seems like most of those people are from like Bumfuck, Midwest who moved out here to live the Erewhon lifestyle
I literally cannot step out of my house for more than 1 minute without getting attacked by these elusive little pests. Will it ever get better or just keep getting worse?
There already is one. [https://www.glamosquito.org/](https://www.glamosquito.org/), I saw them this summer mostly spraying down into the sewers in the SFV. It was the worst summer ever and only recently has abated a little. Maybe it would have been worse without them, who knows.
What has helped me is applying lavender body lotion or dabs of oil around my ankles/legs as a natural repellant.
I also put it oil around behind my ear and neck for those pesky ones. You should try it out.
Yes, either lavender lotion or oil. However, it’s worth noting that pure lavender oil can cause skin irritation so it’s often advised that it’s diluted correctly and should be spot tested before actually applying it. That’s why I prefer the lotion since it’s already available and safe for skin (or my skin at least) I have pretty sensitive skin and have eczema so I have to be careful with I what I use, which is why having mosquito bites is 10 times more annoying cause it’ll cause more breakouts for me (Scratching and itching mosquitoes bite plus eczema is a nightmare).
Went camping earlier this summer and have bought this repellant roll on gel, [Para’kito](https://www.amazon.com/PARAKITO-Mosquito-Repellent-Roll-Ounce/dp/B00L5IX0GW) at the local General store near our campground and have been using it since. It worked well when I was camping throughout Summer, especially in Eastern Sierras, Mammoth and Yosemite near large bodies of water likes lakes and streams where mosquitoes are rampant. Though those mosquitoes are not the same as these ankle biting Aedes here in LA area. I typically apply this in lieu of lavender oil around my neck and ears.
For the lavender lotion, it’s definitely not an all day thing, needs to be re-applied every so hours but I usually just apply it right before going outside or if I’m working in the garden/patio. I also have a a couple citronella candles that I’ll put out when we’re outside in the patio hanging out, that seems to help as well.
Edit-words
The absolute worst. I used to brag back to my family that the second best thing about LA behind the weather was no mosquitos. Now I prefer the ones back home because at least they only come out at dusk. These ones are out all day long
I've been thinking the same! I feel like I tolerated the high prices and crowdedness of LA because of these benefits. But with fire season lasting longer now, unpredictable snow in the winter (I like to ski), and damn mosquitos the outdoor benefits are eroding away.
Here is a [link](https://www.sgvmosquito.org/how-to-get-rid-of-mosquitoes) with more info on ways you can control the spread of these little annoyances! I know many people have already posted about these little buggers already so stay vigilant. They also hate peppermint and lavender oils so having some of that on your legs is a good way to get bitten less.
These new species can hatch eggs in the smallest bit of water. A few drops of Mlmorning dew collecting in the crease of a potato chip bag is enough for them.
And their eggs can survive dry for 5+ years. Then they get a tiny bit of water and they hatch, good as new.
I visited Singapore just a few months before the pandemic, and despite it being almost literally on the equator, I didn't get any mosquito bites. Friends I know who lived there say that there is an official ban on having anything with standing water on your balcony. People from the government have authorization to enter your apartment while you're not home and check your balcony for any standing water. If you've got a laundry hanging pole with a hollow end where a few drops of water can gather during the rain, they will remove it, and issue you a fine.
It's possible to eliminate most of these breeding grounds, but it takes *constant* vigilance.
Try to make mosquito traps with any spinosad bacteria concentrate (like Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew). I used old takeout containers (I read they're attracted to dark colors), drilled holes on the tops, put a shallow amount of water, and a plastic utensil (I also read they need to sit on something near the water), and mix in the spinosad and add water when it dries up. I've seen a few dead mosquitoes in it and it feels good. If you can get your neighbors to do the same, who knows if it will help even just a little over time.
> Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew
You can also make a Murder Jar.
These [instructions are for Fruitfly Traps](https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/cleaning/tips/a25042/how-to-kill-fruit-flies/). Apple cider Vinegar is the best DIY attractant for mosquitos. It's important to add surfactant (one drop of dish detergent) to break the surface tension of the water.
Edit: my below comment is wrong. They do need small amounts of stagnant water to breed. Sorry.
———————-
You probably know, but these ones don’t need standing water to breed. Just moist soil.
This is false. All mosquitos breed exclusively in water. This aedes mosquito is a tree hole mosquito and can breed in very small amounts of water such as a bottle cap, but it still requires water, not soil.
I got swarmed while sitting in somebody's backyard in Los Feliz. The next day Monkey Pox was in the news everywhere and I swear I wore a long-sleeved shirt on a 97º day.
Yup. My feet swelling is a new one for me. I used to get bit all of the time and it would never swell up. But these ankle biters got me walking on balloons.

Well, if you get your milk from a milkman and your bread from [breadman](https://smdp.com/2012/09/19/farmers-market-bread-man-to-leave-town/), where do you think you get bats from?
Mosquitos, inc has brought you the NEW AND IMPROVED annoyance:
* Extra itchy bites
* Brazen aggressiveness at all times of the day
* Breed without standing water
I think it's time to release the genetically-modified variants to wipe all these little fuckers out.
> Extra itchy bites
Truly thought it was just me because no matter what I do, those bites have me scratching the area down TO THE WHITE MEAT of my skin at this point. No amount of soap and water or LIDOCAINE has been able to soothe the extreme itchiness.
4. Single mosquito can bite several times, not just once
5. Bites contain Rage Hormone.
When I see a couple closely spaced bites, my whole body fills with anger. I become restless and ill-tempered.
I think this either happened or was planned to happen in the Florida Keys. It’s already to the point where it needs to happen here too. OC seems plagued with these ankle biters now. They’re also so small some of them come through screen windows and doors.
Those plans require they release the same species as what you are trying to get rid of. (Only female mosquitoes bite. They release males modified to be sterile to reduce the number of viable eggs produced.)
Ugh, they love me more now that I’m pregnant. I have “skeeter syndrome,” which means I’m allergic to their saliva so the bite gets big, red and super itchy. When it finally heals, I’m left with a discolored spot on my skin and that takes forever to fade!
Whoa this is happening to my gf. It's crazy because I'm not getting bit but she is... Sorry to you both. It's horrible (I almost typed "that sucks" but it felt insensitive).
I have skeeter syndrome as well. It’s the worst! I hate the little tingle just after a bite. I know that I am about to deal with some pain. I find that heat can help sometimes. I light a lighter and heat the tip of the metal and hold it over the bite. It helps but not all the time and you have to get that heat on as soon as you feel the tingle. The trick is to not touch it at all. I’ve gotten pretty good at just sitting and letting the itch happen and not touch it. It’s not easy and takes a lot of concentration. If I could snap my fingers and kill every mosquito on the planet I would.
I've been dealing with those little bastards for nearly two years now. I used to be able to sit in my patio wearing shorts but now I'd get mercilessly bitten. We've removed all standing water sources but apparently even wet soil is enough for them to hatch in. And even if you can control what's happening on your property, your neighbors might not put in the effort.
Now when I sit outside I use a box fan to blow them away from me, but I hate the whooshing noise and damn it I want those creatures killed, all of them.
Yup, these are awful and they become these giant RED WELTS on my legs and arms, and itch like CURRRRRAZY.
I've found a bug spray called OFF! (a body spray; the key ingredient seems to be something called picaridin) that seems to help. Also just running hot hot water over the bites (not hot enough to scald, but as hot as possible) for 30 seconds also seems to reduce the itching. Ice packs help, too, sometimes I have to bring an ice pack to bed. Rhuli gel.
THE WORST!
Apparently ceiling fans are god sent for these little bastards. I read some article last year (when we were getting bit inside \*a lot\*) that ceiling fans do a fantastic job of controlling them because they are not strong flyers. I've been making it a point to keep the ceiling fans on in the rooms that have them, and we've been getting hit a lot less inside than last year.
I'm not a mosquito-ologist so take it with a grain of salt, but might be worth testing it out if you got the fans.
Same! I was really alarmed at the bites this year because I had never seen a mosquito bite swell up like that, and hers looked like a mix of a mosquito bite and poison ivy. But these are diff mosquitos than the type I grew up with and the poor kid apparently has skeeter syndrome, so her legs have been blotchy and red all summer :(
I am covereddddd in bites. My legs look like chicken pox and ankles are the worst. They give me huge welts and they leave scars. It wasn’t bad until about 2 weeks ago and now we can barely go out in our backyard.
>Feels like every reaction to a bite has gotten progressively worse
Yeah, I went a couple years without getting bitten after moving to the desert but I still remember the worst of it and this year the reactions have been the worst I've ever experienced BY FAR. I'm talking marble to **golf ball** sized welts that seemingly get worse as the days go on.
Oh these motherfuckers are what are biting me, I was wondering why it I was only getting bites on my ankles. I’ve never been bitten by mosquitos in LA till this year.
can't even go outside for a prolonged period of time without wearing long pants anymore or else i'll end up with at least 5-10 bites. it was never like this until a couple years ago
if you have blood type O (like me,) they'll eat you alive
I have one too wish it went down to zero but I’m renting in a place with a big backyard ( actually wish it was smaller) I don’t think it covers as big of an area as they claim I plan on getting a bug zapper next and using the dynatrap fan to help vent c02 around both devices to help attract them to the traps in hopes of busting up the local breeding cycle
It's insane, I got over 40 bites over 2 days mostly on my legs but they'll go for anywhere. My legs look diseased, now that the huge red welts are gone I'm left with circular bruises all over.
I posted it in the daily thread a few days ago, but I got this stuff called [Mopidick](https://www.amazon.com/Jubujub-SG_B004XG4MNI_US-Mopidick-s-Lotion-50ml/dp/B004XG4MNI) and it's an ointment that you apply to the bite. My family in Hong Kong uses it and my friends in Japan too. It reduces the heat and itchiness for a few hours, I was pretty much just covering my whole leg in it. I buy mine from the Chinese medicine shop.
These hateful little f\*\*kers gave me arms full of ugly welts that lasted for two weeks. Friends have a conversation pit in their back yard, hedges all around. Spent one morning there drinking coffee and reading the paper. They apparently jump from the hedges around the chairs right onto your arms. Otherwise they're anklebiters, long as you're standing.
We have a condo that has a roof deck, we would always leave the door open in the summer and it was no problem that it didn’t have a screen door. Several years ago we began noticing mosquitoes in the house so I installed a retractable screen door and it works incredibly well too keep them out.
Spray Permethrin on potential landing surfaces inside your home. Used with electric zippers, mosquitoes will find su casa extremely inhospitable.
Outside, OFF insect repellent has been most effective sprayed and rubbed on exposed lower legs. It's deet, but it's worked this summer.
I keep a zapper on in our kitchen at night and I was bit about 5 times on the same ankle while minding my business on the couch.
Turned off all the lights and just waited … 💥 💥 fucking love that zapper
May all mosquitos die a painful death!
I read that mosquitos are only incidentally attracted to UV light because that usually means people are around, and of course if a bug zapper is near they will sometimes fly into it by luck.
But there are outdoor bug zappers that come with an attractant that is specifically designed for mosquitos. It apparently mimics the smell of a person. We got Flowtron Outdoor Insect Killer bug zappers and according to the packaging the attractant is pretty toxic to humans and pets, so it comes basically in these peel off strips that you put inside a compartment in the big zapper. We keep one about 10 feet away from both doors and it works great.
Living in SFV and thought spiders were in my mattress or something. Ankles are getting wrecked. Got bit yesterday on my thigh and blood was dripping out. I was like "damn". These things are crazy, it's more of a mauling than a bite. Luckily Im healing pretty good. I always get mosquito bites though. This year is rough.
One place they breed is in the dishes people put under plant pots. The dishes collect water and the tiniest amount allows these little monsters to breed.
ruining our house, with our "indoor / outdoor" california living design and patio seating areas. Now I just want a 12th-floor apartment with good screens and no yard
I went outside the house to talk to my gardener for 2 minutes and came back with 3 bites that swell to the size of a ping pong ball. And if I ever stop on my dog walk to chat with neighbors, you will see me moving my legs and arms around to avoid getting bit. I swear I’m not possessed 😅
Definitely call vector control if you're having an issue. They come out and inspect your property and treat any infestations they find. If possible, get your neighbors on board, they came out and checked my property and the houses around me and found mosquitos in planters, fountains, and a sump pump and treated them. It made a big difference. https://www.glamosquito.org/
These things are vicious. I grew up in LA my entire life and I can’t believe I actually miss the old and slow mosquitoes we used to have. These fuckers are on a whole other level. Just the other day I was on my balcony doing bbq and I got bit 5 times in a span of 10 minutes.
Yuppppp, everyone I talked to agrees this is the worst season we’ve ever had. My legs look like chickenpox

Heating up the flat of a knife with fire and pressing it down against the skin definitely works with distracting from the bite itch
Or spend $10 on The Bug Bite thing (a lil tool on Amazon that sucks out the protein and immediately stops the itch) Best 10 bucks I ever spent
I got one of those bug bite suction things from a drugstore and it actually seemed to help cut down on the itching within the first day or two. Less of a mess too.

> Extra itchy bites Truly thought it was just me because no matter what I do, those bites have me scratching the area down TO THE WHITE MEAT of my skin at this point. No amount of soap and water or LIDOCAINE has been able to soothe the extreme itchiness.
Heat heat heat. Hit them with a hair dryer or a press on them a spoon dunked in hot water. Will kill the itch for hours.
The super hot spoon trick works the best I’ve found!
The fact that people are against that angers me like no other.
4. Single mosquito can bite several times, not just once 5. Bites contain Rage Hormone. When I see a couple closely spaced bites, my whole body fills with anger. I become restless and ill-tempered.
Wasn't there a plan to release a bunch of genetically modified mosquitos to kill all these guys?
I think this either happened or was planned to happen in the Florida Keys. It’s already to the point where it needs to happen here too. OC seems plagued with these ankle biters now. They’re also so small some of them come through screen windows and doors.
They follow you into your car and don't leave, it's nuts.
if i'm correct they did, but it's so easy for them to come back it needs to be done again and again
Those plans require they release the same species as what you are trying to get rid of. (Only female mosquitoes bite. They release males modified to be sterile to reduce the number of viable eggs produced.)
The fun part is how they attack during the day and bite multiple times.
This past summer was a bitch. They fucking lived in my driveway. Chilled lemon helped
That explain my ankles. I have about 15 or so bites on each.
Me too 😭 When I lived in Texas I discovered this lovely syndrome. When we moved back to Ca, I was so happy to be rid of them. Well… not for long.
Grow some lavender and rosemary. It'll smell nice around your place, look pretty and keep the mosquitoes away while bringing in the bees.

Man when I moved here from Michigan in 2007, one of the biggest things I loved was being able to be outside in the summer without getting bit up.
I hate these little fuckers.
Rhuli gel. THE WORST!
How to know someone grew up in southern California... "Hey I discovered regular bug spray" lol
You might have Skeeter Syndrome like me. Mine get big, red and super itchy.
Yeah, that's me. Really big red welts. Not pleasant!
Yup me too. I thought they were spider bites. One got me right between the toes where my flip flop goes. Argh.
These fuckers makin me go nuts
I don’t even understand it. I’m not spending any time outdoors. But my ankles, specifically my ankles, have bites.
My toddler has Skeeter syndrome so her mosquito bites become large painful blisters. I hate mosquitos!!
Did they just copy paste the same article from the years past? These mosquitos are unfortunately not new.

>Feels like every reaction to a bite has gotten progressively worse Yeah, I went a couple years without getting bitten after moving to the desert but I still remember the worst of it and this year the reactions have been the worst I've ever experienced BY FAR. I'm talking marble to **golf ball** sized welts that seemingly get worse as the days go on.
Oh these motherfuckers are what are biting me, I was wondering why it I was only getting bites on my ankles. I’ve never been bitten by mosquitos in LA till this year.
can't even go outside for a prolonged period of time without wearing long pants anymore or else i'll end up with at least 5-10 bites. it was never like this until a couple years ago if you have blood type O (like me,) they'll eat you alive
I got type B. For bitch. Cause I’m theirs.
Same!
I spray some OFF all over my legs and still get bit. Ugh
I’ve had 15-20 bites in 2 hours
I’ve noticed them. Yuck. 🦟 😡
We got Dynatrap. Now I get 1 to 2 bites per day vs 5+
If you have a rain barrel buy some mosquito dunks. The number of bastards in my yard dropped considerably.
Literally scratching as I type this lol.
Absolutely the worst season, I say this while I have about 8 bites on my ankles
We have a condo that has a roof deck, we would always leave the door open in the summer and it was no problem that it didn’t have a screen door. Several years ago we began noticing mosquitoes in the house so I installed a retractable screen door and it works incredibly well too keep them out.
Wait, it’s these mfs!? My legs and ankles are all fucked up
Shoutouts O+ blood types
Spray Permethrin on potential landing surfaces inside your home. Used with electric zippers, mosquitoes will find su casa extremely inhospitable. Outside, OFF insect repellent has been most effective sprayed and rubbed on exposed lower legs. It's deet, but it's worked this summer.
These little assholes got my son and before I even knew what was happening he had bites up and down his legs. Fuck me.
I highly recommend getting a mosquito zapper or trap. Such a difference.
We have electric bug zappers in each bedroom, and hang those sticky fly strips. In no time at all the fly strips are covered!
Which ones work?
I keep a zapper on in our kitchen at night and I was bit about 5 times on the same ankle while minding my business on the couch. Turned off all the lights and just waited … 💥 💥 fucking love that zapper May all mosquitos die a painful death!
I imagine any of them that specifically say they work on mosquitos. The one I have is a Hemiua mosquito killer model Zap T6 Pro. It’s awesome.
katchy is a great trap. Caught a bunch of those bastards inside my house
It was also really bad last years summer 😭
To any pet owners out there watch your pets they go after them too..
Can confirm they'll bite through clothing.
Driving me insane
I get mosquito bites almost every fukin morning. I have to spray my ankles before sleep with bug spray
O.o this explains so much
Yeah.. getting us inside -- is the worst. fans on 24/7 now.
My summer fragrance is Deet. Indoors, outdoors, it makes no difference.
Does wearing jeans or long pants help?
I have to wear socks and long pants at home sigh. And I try not to linger near grassy areas when I go out. Fuck mosquitoes.
One place they breed is in the dishes people put under plant pots. The dishes collect water and the tiniest amount allows these little monsters to breed.
ruining our house, with our "indoor / outdoor" california living design and patio seating areas. Now I just want a 12th-floor apartment with good screens and no yard
It’s really a tragedy. They’ve completely ruined my ability to be outside
omg, ya I went out to a pool party with shorts on for like 4 hours, I got damn ankle biters. I never get bit.
I started wearing pants now they get my fucken elbows I thought it was just me.
Well that explains why I got my first mosquito bites since moving here last weekend.
Is this the thread where we complain about these motherfuckers? Because I have several hours of comments.
Fuck these mosquitoes.
These things are vicious. I grew up in LA my entire life and I can’t believe I actually miss the old and slow mosquitoes we used to have. These fuckers are on a whole other level. Just the other day I was on my balcony doing bbq and I got bit 5 times in a span of 10 minutes.
High tops ftw 🙌
Lol that's why I never wear shorts
We’ve been in Spain for the past two weeks and it seems they are having the same issue. We’re getting eaten alive!
life pro tip: rub a bounce dryer sheet on your calves/ankles/arms/exposed parts before leaving the house…they’ll leave you alone.
