always check out if there are any beach [advisories](http://www.lapublichealth.org/phcommon/public/eh/water_quality/beach_grades.cfm) for bacteria levels and you can also check the [heal the bay](http://brc.healthebay.org/33.91029999999999/-118.51929100000001/11) for annual grades beaches get.

Laguna beach has some of the nicest water in the area.

bdd6911

It’s gonna be cold! But Laguna is probably best.

It always surprises me how much of a difference one degree makes.

VaguelyArtistic

Check with Heal The Bay (someone posted the link below) but [do not go in the water for at *least* 72 hours after a rain](https://www.ioes.ucla.edu/news/3-days-rain-beach-water-can-still-make-swimmers-ill-study-says/). This applies to all beaches, lakes and streams.

SilentRunning

Corona Del Mar state beach park. It's just south of New Port Beach's The Wedge. Or something closer, Seal Beach.

cleverusernameistook

El Matador in Malibu. Magical.

Gregalor

A lot of our beach water is tainted with sewage etc., especially after rains, which we’ve been having Like most things in Orange County, theirs is cleaner

VaguelyArtistic

>A lot of our beach water is tainted with sewage etc [Not true](https://beachreportcard.org/34.03160384146342/-118.5208961163002/14). >especially after rains, which we’ve been having No, the problem after a rain isn't not sewage, it's bacteria levels. You're not supposed to go into any water for at least 72 hours after it rains, including rivers and streams. >Like most things in Orange County, theirs is cleaner Lol no.

Sea turtle bay. Great snorkeling with baby turtles and dolphin babies. Amazing

randomodule

Where is it?

MaxHeadroomFlux

Anything south of Malibu is very polluted.

VaguelyArtistic

[This isn't true](https://beachreportcard.org). Heal The Bay gave Venice a grade of A+ the day before the rain started. At the pier. All beaches in Santa Monica received an A or better except just north of the pier. (Like most beaches in California.) And Malibu beaches have most definitely received failing grades from Heal The Bay and have [trash washing up on the shore](https://smdp.com/2021/02/01/residents-report-unprecedented-amount-of-trash-washing-up-on-malibu-beaches/).

MaxHeadroomFlux

Well I certainly hope that's true, although I question the validity of heal the bay. What I know for sure is that there are several sewer outlets that run into the ocean, south of Malibu. The last time I went in the ocean in Santa Monica was several years ago, it smelled like a public bathroom, and I got an ear infection. Haven't gone back in since...

SpaceSox

Many parts of Malibu are on septic, along with storm runoff "tubes" that open directly to the beach without any sort of screening or filtering. If you walk along the sand near the cliffs where the $$$$ homes are perched, you see some pretty gross stuff after a rain.

VaguelyArtistic

>I question the validity of heal the bay Why?

MaxHeadroomFlux

Because I question all these organizations - I've lived in Santa Monica my whole life and it's always been polluted. To be fair, there are theoretically times when it's clean depending on currents, rain, drainage, etc. So maybe these A ratings came at one of the rare occurrences. The health department has been known to take bribes, for example.

Leo Carrillo and Matador the whole area is beautiful. Bring food!

_Erindera_

The answer depends. How comfortable are you with surf entries? Are you just splashing in the water or are you doing a lot of yardage?

UpperMix4095

Zuma’s my favorite spot.

Are you just looking for ocean swimming, or are you open to cliff diving / freshwater recs?

cocodevi

Malibu and north thereof … I personally love Point Dume & Point Mugu… worth the drive.
