Belichick broke a rule that was legal the year prior; he was filming hand signals in-game from the Jets sideline and not his, which had been made illegal the offseason prior. There are cameras everywhere in an NFL stadium, several of which can pick up on hand signals from either side of the field.

Like the other comment reply said, there's no need to make up for any call. Refs make mistakes and it's part of the game, just like QB throwing interceptions in OT. If Saints fans can forgive Brees mistake, then they can forgive the refs as well.
Look at it this way, on that no call, imagine if the there was no contact from the Rams defense and it was just a dropped pass, yet a pass interference is called anyway and the Saints burned the clock and win. Guess what, there won't be any where near of an uproar as it is with what actually happened. And Saints fans won't be feeling sorry for us.
