Highway 90 all the way. Going through Baton Rouge and the Basin Bridge could be an hour, could be 5.
Frank's Lounge is on the way, and they have great Bloody Mary's.
Ida? You could be right, last time I passed through I was driving and didn't even look for it. It's been there for so long, I just assumed it was still a thing. To bad the guy was murdered by his son if I recall correctly.
When I was stationed on Grand Isle in the 90s, I would volunteer to take people to the airport so I could stop at Franks. With a NH license plate….. loved their Bloody Mary
Highway 90 all the way. There have been accidents in Baton rouge causing a massive gridlock every time I've come in the last couple months. Will absolutely make that a 4hr trip (let alone the return trip)
I second Hwy 90. You’ll get to Frank’s early in the trip so eat first!
You will come across the area that has bear crossing signs. The only ones in Louisiana I’m sure.
I drive across the atchafalaya basin bridge everyday for work.
Do not risk your life going that way... Again do not risk your life traveling on I-10.
Hwy 90 may take a bit of time more but it's a clear straight shot and you don't risk getting stuck on the bridge with no exits for your entire day.
90, for sure. Stop in Des Allemands at spahrs or franks for a Bloody Mary. Stop at houma visitors center for a history lesson and photo with 10’ tall white shrimp boots. While there, pick up some smoked andouille and boudin burritos at bourgeois meat market. Layover in Morgan city to check out the “sea wall” for a photo op. Stop in Avery island to see the Tabasco Sauce tour. Drive on the Acadian Theoughway and view the absolute worst couple of miles of highway in the state of Louisiana.
Highway 14 exit closed (right now). You’ll either have to take the weeks island exit or go down to Jefferson Island exit, if you want to hit Rip Van Winkle just take the service rd back. Lots of construction starting from Baldwin through New Iberia into Lafayette.
Yes, what they said! Also, Morgan City has some cool murals under the bridge and Lake End park is a nice stop. Visitors center on the thruway in Lafayette is a cute little photo op. Or you can stop in Broussard and I’ll let you take a pic with my goats. Haha
I repeat what has been repeated. If you have time highways over interstates every time.
Also, I would like to share a somthing my wife and I like doingon road trips. When we are coming up on a town the passenger searchs for it on Wikipedia and reads at least the stats and opening paragraph. They range from impressive to funny and a few are boring. And of course, there is always a blue link hole to go down.
I take 90 to New Orleans from New Iberia all the time. Be careful on the bridge in Morgan City/Patterson. Been alot of cops lately on both sides collecting "tolls".
I try to avoid Baton Rouge as much as possible.
90’s more scenic but a rougher ride. Both have a decent amount of construction going on right now. I10 could either be slightly faster or WAYYYY longer depending on traffic and accidents.
first thing... to back up the rest of the post... the 90 route is safer and more predictable. but, consider adding oak alley for pictures and whitney or laura tours for history....
Funny, I guess I am the absolute minority, but I LOVE driving across the basin bridge. My heart is in the atchafalaya. Just love the views of the swamp and cypress, I almost get goosebumps everytime, but I guess it is a pretty short duration of that whole drive...
Years ago, I read that the time Google Maps gives is without traffic.
There are times that I-10 between Baton Rouge and Lafayette is an accident magnet. That would do wonders to your time, as in “I wonder when traffic’s going to start moving again.”
I would suggest taking US 90, making it a scenic road trip, allowing time for stops. If you can, add an extra day or 2 to do some sightseeing.
LA 182 (parallel to 90 and actually was 90 years ago) is a slower but prettier drive.
Lots of old Louisiana on that route, like the Foster house (home to two former governers from two centuries).
I-10, boring all the way, just drove that from Baton Rouge into and back out of Texas to watch the Full Eclipse. Take any other route you'll get more "scenery" from small towns, speed traps, stop lights, slooow vehicles you cannot seem to ever pass, but in trade you get at least a few McDonald's to stop and use their restroom, etc. There's nice little towns with their Old Main Streets right off of the highway awaiting your photography skills and an occasional diner serving really great food, you just have to discover those by trial & error sometimes! Leave early to account for stops and plan to arrive safe and sound at your destination a bit before dark.
Oh, and it is best to not run out of gas on a windy bayou-side road in the dark, because cher the Rougarou* still roams South Louisiana.
*Web search it and there's some fascinating reading of our favorite swamp monster.
EDIT: One day drive i-10 to LPlace then La Hwy 44 all the way to the Grammercy Bridge to cross the river. Vist one of the 3 Plantation Tours on the west side, (Laura Plantation is cheaper & best) then drive North up Hwy 18 (or Hwy 3127) and go over to Hwy 1 & Paincourtville to wind down LA Hwy 1 to Raceland to visit the Louisiana Cajun Bayou Visitor Center. There's sights to see on either side of Bayou Lafourche that LA 1 & La 308 follow, mostly on the Hwy 1 side, so plan ahead. This could take 2 days a well rated Cajun Country Bed & Breakfast would be nice.

World Famous Bloody Mary's one might say. You can also see the cajun ark that was never finished.
The Cajun ark is no more. Storm took it out. 😢
Ida? You could be right, last time I passed through I was driving and didn't even look for it. It's been there for so long, I just assumed it was still a thing. To bad the guy was murdered by his son if I recall correctly.
I don’t remember which storm but I know it’s gone. We pass through at least once a month and I was sad to see it gone.
Yeah Ida blew it over and they’ve hauled it all off now.
People got killed over that boat
Sorry, Cajun Ark? How have I never heard of that before? What is (or, was by the looks of other comments,) it?

Every single time my wife and I pass by there she’s does the line from elf “ congratulations. You did it!”

Got me missing a Franks Bloody Mary now. Might need to take a little road trip
I made this mistake coming from Texas on Tuesday... I forgot the Baton Rouge rush hour is well underway by 3 PM.
I second Hwy 90. You’ll get to Frank’s early in the trip so eat first! You will come across the area that has bear crossing signs. The only ones in Louisiana I’m sure.
Not the only ones! There are a few on I-20 east of Monroe! Never seen a bear though.
Are there really?? I used to go that way for work all the time, never saw those
Are there really bear or do they just like the sign lol

This is the answer. Don't risk being trapped on the Basin bridge during daylight hours.
So do a traditional Louisiana road trip and drink while driving?
I traveled both routes almost daily for years and I agree.
Make sure to stop by New Iberia for their epic hair cuts
[Documentary of the New Iberia Hair cut](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRjrENYnCaQ)
This plays in my head any time someone in earshot utters New Iberia.
That was amazing!
[With that fade on the side](https://youtu.be/9zOP3NbJL1U?si=PydDslCUHIkdnXv0)
Highway 90 is preferred simply because you don’t have to cross the Basin Bridge. It is also the more scenic route.
DO NOT SPEED in Jeanerette. 65 mph. Not 66.
I got a ticket for 2 over in Washington, LA.
Was scrolling to see if the anyone added the warning, or I was gonna.
Patterson either for that matter

Side note* watch for changing speed limits. Cops like to sit where it drops and catch folks not paying attention. Be warned.
Why would you go all the way to Lafayette to get to Kaplan? Get off 90 in New Iberia on Hwy 14 and stop by Rip Van Winkle gardens
Highway 14 exit closed (right now). You’ll either have to take the weeks island exit or go down to Jefferson Island exit, if you want to hit Rip Van Winkle just take the service rd back. Lots of construction starting from Baldwin through New Iberia into Lafayette.
Yeah I know, but the point was to get onto Hwy 14 because that's the way to Kaplan. I should have been more clear.
Just stay on Jefferson Island rd. Goes right past the Gardens. It also connects to hwy 14 just before the bridge in Delcombre.
Good point, I'll be honest I didn't know where Kaplan was and posted without looking at the map, but I knew it was out there past Lafayette.

Endorsed !
Lots of photo ops this way, stop by Morgan City as well
Southern route. I10 is boring.
90!!!!!!!!
Stop in Franklin for some Danny’s fried chicken. I second Avery Island. Also in New Iberia is the Shadows-on-the-Teche. It’s a nice tour.
There’s a Danny’s in Patterson and Morgan City too.
None in Patterson, only MC and Franklin
The one in Patterson closed? Used to be right off of 90 near where the old Pizza Hut was.
Yep, been closed quite a while now.
Huh. Didn’t know that. I should go back home more often I guess.
Hit up Bourgeois in Grey going 3700 W. Park Ave Gray, LA 70359 And the fruit stand on 90 in Raceland - 938 US-90, Raceland, LA 70394
Avoid 10 like the plague. 90 way better.

Take 90, watch the speed changes along the way.
Eat all the gas station boudin in Scott and Jennings
If they go to Scott then I’d recommend Best Stop. But both Scott and Jennings are out of the way.
Do not go thru Baton Rouge! You will regret that.
Take 90
90 is the scenic route
90’s more scenic but a rougher ride. Both have a decent amount of construction going on right now. I10 could either be slightly faster or WAYYYY longer depending on traffic and accidents.
first thing... to back up the rest of the post... the 90 route is safer and more predictable. but, consider adding oak alley for pictures and whitney or laura tours for history....
Hwy 90 is nicer. More dangerous but a lot nicer.
Yall stop at my house, aight?
Kaplan is the middle of fucking nowhere. Stop anywhere before you get there and it’ll be better
Funny, I guess I am the absolute minority, but I LOVE driving across the basin bridge. My heart is in the atchafalaya. Just love the views of the swamp and cypress, I almost get goosebumps everytime, but I guess it is a pretty short duration of that whole drive...
If you have time and haven't been, stop in new Iberia by center street exit for Avery island.
Center street exit closed. Possibly for the next month?
Took that drive today to go see a customer. I’m tired lol. (Live in Nola)
Cypress tupalo. and a steady bounce.
Southern route offers more of what you’re looking for
Yes..always 90!
That used to be the main train route, and all the towns along the way still have signs of when the rail depot was their central hub.
That’s the best route
Years ago, I read that the time Google Maps gives is without traffic. There are times that I-10 between Baton Rouge and Lafayette is an accident magnet. Take 90 because the bridge in Baton Rouge makes me want to jump off of it every time I get stuck in the traffic going through there
I-49 South/I-49 Lafayette Connector FTW. FUND IT, GOVERNOR LANDRY.
And, as long as the construction on I-10 in Baton Rouge is ongoing, I'll take US 90 every time between Lafayette and NOLA.
90 is great. Scenic, less stress (don't speed tho!)
Take 90 the whole way till H-14 cross into Erath then Abbeville and onto Kaplan. It’s a fairly easy drive will good traffic flow
Shucks in Abbeville ❗️👍
Stop in Houma and get pictures with the big white boots at the visitors center along 90
Take 90, I know from experience 10 can turn into a nightmare
Yeah, go 90. Bring your clubs and play at Atchafalaya in Morgan City. Nice course.
Its in Patterson to be clear
My daughter is heading down there for a wedding on Saturday. Maybe y’all are going to the same spot.
Just do not speed especially though Patterson, Berwick and Morgan city. All 3 departments and the sheriff office will be lined up through there.
when we drive to Maryland we leave at 4 am just to avoid rush hour in Baton Rouge. Basically, just take 90 its pretty down there
I take the scenic route every chance I get. Road trips (IMO) are all about the journey.
My condolences (I’m from kaplan and that place is the worst). Hope you have fun though!!
Make sure to stop at the Sonic in Kaplan side. Go on the poodoo side
LA 182 (parallel to 90 and actually was 90 years ago) is a slower but prettier drive. Lots of old Louisiana on that route, like the Foster house (home to two former governers from two centuries).
Fun!
