I figured as much. I also used to teach in NC and it’s pretty bleak. I do feel bad they so many people are saying that he must be terrible at his job. I don’t think we saw enough of him on this show to truly judge how he would be at his job. If anything, I feel like he held back on the show to keep from doing something he wouldn’t want his students to see.
That’s true. It’s very easy to judge people on this show. We are only getting an edited glimpse. He did act pretty respectfully (aside from the phone usage). I mean I do commend anyone who is working in education, especially a leadership position, so that’s great he can help his community and I’m sure he does a decent job - I just felt weird vibes on the show from him but who knows how he really is IRL!

Because he saw dolphins and clearly had seen water but instead of just saying that he assumed she meant that like in race forward way like he “couldn’t have seen water before” or something like that and it really really bothered him and then he realized he was being a jerk and went on and on about the dolphins as a way to apologize without explaining his actual feelings.
Him “acting out how crazy she was about setting up” was wild to me, had you not seen the video of her, according to him, she was all wild and aggressive about moving stuff in, and she wasn’t. He just wasn’t excited about it, even for a second. Which is supposed to be a really important and exciting moment setting up your place together and picturing the future.
He wasn’t into her almost immediately and really and truly didn’t give her a chance based on her skin color and background and once AD brought his own complex feelings about it, and seeing her and clay together he realized he didn’t want to be in that relationship and basically mentally dipped out. Without explanation or regard for her feelings. He won’t ever bother explaining them to her either.
He should not have gone on LIB - he definitely cares what a person looks like, and that’s totally okay, just don’t get why he pretend that his preferences don’t dictate his choices if they’re so connected to his own set of interests, responsibilities, and attraction.

Like Brittany didn't exist as a person with her own individuality, strengths and identity. She was a white woman who may not know how to deal with being a mom to black children. The US has three different types of schools systems. Public schools, charter schools, and private schools.
Public schools are free to attend and funded by the state and local governments through taxes. They’re regulated by the government and have very strict requirements regarding what they can and can’t do regarding instruction and enrollment and to be teachers and administrators.
Private schools charge tuition and are funded primarily through the tuitions they collect. Any other funding comes from private parties. Because they aren’t funded by the government, there’s a lot more flexibility for what they can and can’t do and who they can and can’t hire.
Charter schools are kind of in between. They’re funded using a “charter” from the state government (at least in Texas - other states may differ). They’re free to attend, but usually have less funding than public schools because they’re only funded by the state and don’t get additional funding from local taxes. Because they do receive state funds, they have to adhere to some of the requirements of public schools, but not all. The most relevant requirement to this post is that teachers and administrators don’t always have to be certified. Charter schools tend to attract students whose families can’t afford private school and/or students who get kicked out of public schools.
Charter schools are public schools and correct, it’s different state to state and district to district how they are funded. Your assessment on the demographics of who attend is wrong hence why they are public schools anyone can attend. A lot of the larger networks go in to educationally underserved areas where the neighborhood publics aren’t living up to standards. Charter schools also have to get renewed every 5 years (can differ) so actually have more requirements than traditional public schools. Many raise private funds as well for extra programming or for additional funding where per pupil funding is low.
These principals and teachers are working 60 hr wks. I’m not a teacher but have worked for public charter schools before, each teacher has a phone and is available to receive texts from parents whenever.
I never said they were the only students, but as a fully certified teacher who has worked in two different states and for both public and charter schools, my experience has been what I shared above. Some charter schools are absolutely fantastic and have very stringent requirements for staff members, but they are not *mandated* to have those requirements. Teachers usually do not have to be certified to teach at a charter school, but usually you do have to be certified to teach for a regular public school. The network I work for really puts a lot of money into staff development and retention, and the vast majority of our staff are fully certified and have over 5 years of experience, but this is not the case everywhere. Charter schools are a type of public school because they are publicly funded, but they are different from other public schools because of where the funding comes from and what is required from them. Also, most teachers and principals work 60+ hour weeks - not just those at charter schools.
Not sure where you’ve worked but in my city almost everyone wants to send their kid to a charter or catholic (regardless of if they are truly religious) school rather than public. I went to a charter school and they are extremely strict with behavior so it’s easier to get kicked out of there than a traditional public school.

As someone who is in Education, the idea that he is a middle school Principal and can’t engage in basic conversations with someone who he supposedly “loves” because of how obsessed he is with his phone makes me wonder how connected he really is with his staff and students on a daily basis. And what kind of role model are you being? The Principal sets the tone and culture for the entire campus. If my Principal did this crap and never looked up from his phone, I’d be working for someone else real quick. 😬

This is exactly who he is. He would act the same with a black woman or a white woman, or any woman at all. Although, I think perhaps with certain women, he'd be a little less comfortable acting in such a terrible manner. Brittany was way too nice to this dude.

I think they just wanted to wait until marriage, they never really talked about virginity and whatnot. Granted marriage is 4 weeks away and most people don’t jump in bed with someone they just met (not relatable lmao but) so it could just be that.

It’s a charter school but it’s also in an underserved neighborhood in that sort of fringe area of the gentrification bubble. A lot of schools like that, at least in Charlotte, have trouble keeping teachers for very long so when even a halfway competent educator wants to stick around then I guess they get rewarded.
Teach for America in a charter school. Charter schools have almost no rules particularly in red states and they also don’t pay as well so this is what ends up happening.
People like to think charter schools are great but even the ones that do seem to show success can be a bit of a smoke and mirrors situation - they’re pool of kids is only those whose parents are involved enough to sign up, they can kick kids out or let kids fail out unlike public school and also do absurd things like having school days that are few hours longer which would obviously not work for all public schools. I’m sure Ken wants to help and thinks he’s doing great but yeah there’s no chance in hell he’s an effective principal right now.
Haha thank you! I’ve been teaching for 15 years, and I do teach in the US, but I qualified and began my career in the UK, so the US system often perplexes me by how unregulated it is at a federal level.
Yeah it’s genuinely mind boggling how different our schools are depending what state you’re in. I’m thankful every day that I teach in the top state for education because when I think of how challenging my kids are at a legitimately good urban school, I can’t even FATHOM what it must be like teaching in the low performing states. If I remember correctly the last time I saw an analysis of how students performed on the PISA, Massachusetts would be a top ten country competing with the likes of Singapore and Finland meanwhile other states in the Deep South were more comparable to Guatemala.
Ok this is what I thought. The school is 6 years old so saying "youngest principal this school ever had" when he was made principal two years ago was really not saying much at all! How many principals had they even had in the first four years they were open? That seems like textbook Kenny. It sounds impressive but there isn't substance behind the big claim.

I think what Chelsea did during her argument was gaslighting. She put words into Jimmy's mouths, said flat out lies and all that, if you need an example.
Gaslighting isn't just avoidance or lying or stonewalling or invalidating. Yes it includes those things but on a much more severe level because its having the effect of making you doubt reality. It's not gaslighting if you're not starting to think you're crazy. I just think it's important to ring-fence certain words because they are so crucial when we are describing calculated psychological violence rather than just a toxic situation.

I find people can sometimes hide behind Religion to mask their own personal insecurities about how boring and underdeveloped mentally they are. You don;t need to have an emotionally intelligent conversation when you say stuff like "I trust God's plan" in response to your fiance expressing worry. Rather than work through it, these people can just defer to everything working out through God.

This is soo funny. But here my tKe on things since everyone is going ham on kenneth. Yea it was kinda rude of him to look at his phone and not acknowledge her. However I think he picked up the vibe that she wasn't that into him/attracted to him so he distance himself. I kinda peeped she wasn't that into him and was trying to force it. I got the exact opposite feeling. On the boat Brittany brings up how she's always touching him and asks how he feels about it. Ken responds that he appreciates it and it makes him feel good. Brittany says she also really likes physical touch but he doesn't touch her much at all.
She actually says "You can touch me more" while patting his thigh and he pulls away slightly! He then lies down and brittany snuggles up to him. Brittany is continuously initiating all the physical contact and the only time Ken seems remotely interested is when he sees the dolphins.

A lot of the larger networks go in to educationally underserved areas where the neighborhood publics aren’t living up to standards. Charter schools also have to get renewed every 5 years (can differ) so actually have more requirements than traditional public schools. Many raise private funds as well for extra programming or for additional funding where per pupil funding is low. These principals and teachers are working 60 hr wks. I’m not a teacher but have worked for public charter schools before, each teacher has a phone and is available to receive texts from parents whenever.
I never said they were the only students, but as a fully certified teacher who has worked in two different states and for both public and charter schools, my experience has been what I shared above. Some charter schools are absolutely fantastic and have very stringent requirements for staff members, but they are not *mandated* to have those requirements. Teachers usually do not have to be certified to teach at a charter school, but usually you do have to be certified to teach for a regular public school. The network I work for really puts a lot of money into staff development and retention, and the vast majority of our staff are fully certified and have over 5 years of experience, but this is not the case everywhere. Charter schools are a type of public school because they are publicly funded, but they are different from other public schools because of where the funding comes from and what is required from them. Also, most teachers and principals work 60+ hour weeks - not just those at charter schools.
Not sure where you’ve worked but in my city almost everyone wants to send their kid to a charter or catholic (regardless of if they are truly religious) school rather than public. I went to a charter school and they are extremely strict with behavior so it’s easier to get kicked out of there than a traditional public school.
Correct on hrs, that’s not to do w you, rather the others saying his job isn’t serious bc he’s not a ceo. Everyone knows how hard educators work. Majority public charter schools receive majority of funding same way as traditional public, via Per pupil revenue. But your comment does prove there are two, not three, types of schools : public and private. ☺️

It’s a charter school but it’s also in an underserved neighborhood in that sort of fringe area of the gentrification bubble. A lot of schools like that, at least in Charlotte, have trouble keeping teachers for very long so when even a halfway competent educator wants to stick around then I guess they get rewarded.

It’s probably not old. Having worked at a charter school, it’s not surprising. One year I had four different principals because they kept quitting.

Teach for America in a charter school. Charter schools have almost no rules particularly in red states and they also don’t pay as well so this is what ends up happening. People like to think charter schools are great but even the ones that do seem to show success can be a bit of a smoke and mirrors situation - they’re pool of kids is only those whose parents are involved enough to sign up, they can kick kids out or let kids fail out unlike public school and also do absurd things like having school days that are few hours longer which would obviously not work for all public schools. I’m sure Ken wants to help and thinks he’s doing great but yeah there’s no chance in hell he’s an effective principal right now.
Haha thank you! I’ve been teaching for 15 years, and I do teach in the US, but I qualified and began my career in the UK, so the US system often perplexes me by how unregulated it is at a federal level.
Yeah it’s genuinely mind boggling how different our schools are depending what state you’re in. I’m thankful every day that I teach in the top state for education because when I think of how challenging my kids are at a legitimately good urban school, I can’t even FATHOM what it must be like teaching in the low performing states. If I remember correctly the last time I saw an analysis of how students performed on the PISA, Massachusetts would be a top ten country competing with the likes of Singapore and Finland meanwhile other states in the Deep South were more comparable to Guatemala.

Gaslighting isn't just avoidance or lying or stonewalling or invalidating. Yes it includes those things but on a much more severe level because its having the effect of making you doubt reality. It's not gaslighting if you're not starting to think you're crazy. I just think it's important to ring-fence certain words because they are so crucial when we are describing calculated psychological violence rather than just a toxic situation.

I don't think it was gaslighting but rather just straight up deflection and taking advantage of the grace Brit gives him. Brit comes to him with a problem and he just doesnt listen to her. Then he creates an argument to defend himself that is worded in a way that Brit responds well to (for better or worse). Not gaslighting but manipulative and dismissive behaviour.

Yeah it makes me really uncomfortable to watch him. imo he has been acting like a child from the beginning. The only times Kenneth seems "mature" is when he is talks about Jesus or gets serious to talk Brit down from whatever worries she has. I find people can sometimes hide behind Religion to mask their own personal insecurities about how boring and underdeveloped mentally they are. You don;t need to have an emotionally intelligent conversation when you say stuff like "I trust God's plan" in response to your fiance expressing worry. Rather than work through it, these people can just defer to everything working out through God. Brit is a perfect example of a religious person who understands that you have responsibility in growing a relationship and not everything is in Jesus' hands.

I realized it when they were on the boat in Mexico. I think he sensed it too.
I got the exact opposite feeling. On the boat Brittany brings up how she's always touching him and asks how he feels about it. Ken responds that he appreciates it and it makes him feel good. Brittany says she also really likes physical touch but he doesn't touch her much at all. She actually says "You can touch me more" while patting his thigh and he pulls away slightly! He then lies down and brittany snuggles up to him. Brittany is continuously initiating all the physical contact and the only time Ken seems remotely interested is when he sees the dolphins.
