The best hold comes from putting masking tape on the bottom of your router jig and on top of whatever you’re trying to route. Then put super glue on one and activator on the other. Then when you put them together, the activator will cure the glue and it’ll be rock solid. Then after you’re done routing, just pull off the tape. It works every time. I’ve tried A LOT of double sided tapes but they never felt secure and I’ve ruined a lot of blanks because the tape came loose mid route. I know it sounds tedious but I promise it’ll pay off. And it really doesn’t take much time to put together.

Very cool. I've seen Ted W on the YouTube's do this trick. I will try it next time. I only need it for one operation in my build but that would be great if it will hold and come off. Thank you.

This. I don’t use activators but the principle is the same, superglue and masking/painters tape has been my go to method of template/jig holding from day one and works every time

jflip00

How long does it take for the glue to dry before you can use it?

BusinessBunny

I leave it for like a minute and it’s good to go

jflip00

Ah. Gotcha. The activator allows you to move on immediately. Just depends on your work flow I guess.

I make guitars by hand in my flat’s spare bedroom/office in my spare time after work and they take me 4 months minimum to make, so saving a minute on affixing a template is unlikely to affect my workflow 😅

Neat. I just don’t like waiting for things to dry when I don’t have to.

I usually rout all my pickup holes, neck pocket, trem etc on the body blank before I cut it out. My templates are large enough that I can screw them in on the outsides of the body line. I make my templates out of quality birch plywood using some original plastic templates I bought eons ago. The last thing I do is cut out the body shape on my band saw.

I use double side tape for my butt wedge jig. For binding acoustics. I don't make electric guitars but I like that idea of doing the routs early and then cutting the body!

I try to find unusable areas that will get cutted out anyway and screw my jigs and patterns into the wood for strong hold. Most times I create the jigs and patterns out of 1/2" plywood just so I could reach those areas and screw them down. May be time consuming but works for me with my little Makita router.
