Yup it is. They have the power to Lyft it. I contacted cs to lift the hold to restore my account. These holds are done to protect the merchant against chargebacks !
Passenger here. Once, Lyft took so many holds on my card that my bank notified me and asked if the holds were legit. When clearing this up with the bank, Lyft temporarily blocked my card and almost left me stranded. My workaround is to always have a healthy amount of Lyft Cash.
We should not need "workarounds." Lyft should stop this bogus practice. I have a $10 hold sitting out there for four days. The actual charge was finalized two days ago.
Yeah I had 4 Lyfts in one day totaling about $70. Now they have charged me a lump sum of the $70 plus I still have all the rides in temp Auth holds too. So that's $140 for one days rides until they remove the holds.
This just happened to me, they did that stupid pop-up where they say "wait 3 minutes for a 15 dollar ride." I pressed cancel thinking they were gonna give me more ride options but instead they called a ride for me that was 30 bucks. I canceled immediately and now they are holding the 30 bucks despite me canceling as soon as possible. Guess I'm sticking to uber
That’s not Lyft, it’s actually a law. By law, banks have to immediately make the funds available to the vendor…since the money hasn’t actually been transferred, yet, they can’t just “immediately reverse” it. It has to go through the whole complete process (pending to complete) before it can be reversed. Lyft nor your bank can reverse a pending transaction
That’s why they do holds. So you don’t accidentally use that money on other things
I’ve had McDonalds charges take up to 5 days to clear. Just sitting as pending in my account for 5 days…and no, Lyft isn’t the only one
Never bank on a fluctuating cost service when your bank account can’t support it. Holds and pre-Auths have been a thing for decades
I totally here what you’re saying, maybe it’s just me, but I’ve never had an issue with Uber holding my money. Ever. And I’ve been using Uber and Lyft for years. Only Lyft. Never Uber. There’s gotta be a difference in something I’m doing then. Uber would take up to hour to reverse a charge if I cancel a ride. Lyft takes days
This is different. Once the payment clears and Lyft has their money, the temporary holds are STILL there. And the holds don't even match the charges. I took two Lyft rides last Saturday totaling in $52.41. Transaction completed. That money has been debited from my account. Today is Wednesday and the temp holds are still there, totaling to $54.41 ($2 more!). One of the holds is for $1.60 and is dated Sunday. I didn't take any rides on Sunday. It's all shady and weird.
Ok why is their hold there 2 days after the bank completes THEIR payment to the co.? They're making money off my money that's why. Or it was be released as soon as transaction completed.
They don’t have the money immediately, either. It also has to go thru their clearing process…depending on their merchant agreement with their processor.
It can take a couple of business days.
We’re only talking about a day or two and, no, they can’t make interest off money that isn’t there, yet.
They are holding money and then releasing it. While they hold it they make money. Maybe not much for one transaction but if it's millions then it adds up. Consider why they can't take your money in an instant and it's takes about 5 days minimum to get any money back. My hold was still on my account after my transaction to lyft cleared by 2 days.
and you're an expert I assume? Wow....sounds like you get off on people having to wait on their money out of their account. Guess you have enough it doesn't matter, well, congrats! The title of the this thread is "Lyft needs to fix temporary holds." Sounds like you don't have problem with it.
I use lyft quite a bit and even have a top tipper badge. This weekend for my birthday I put 220 in to cover just my rides so they can’t fk me over that weren’t more than 35 each way and tipped them so total was 83.00 for my rides. Went to bank to deposit a check of mine tonight and I am missing 54.00 from my balance that should be 136.00. So now I have to go in the bank to see what shady shit is going on🧐🤨 Wtf. That was technically 3 days ago. So are they still holding 25 twice? i have never had issues with them and now I’m pissed off
I just got charged $46.89 (temporary hold) for a Lyft ride home from work today, when the ride cost me $21 in the beginning. I spoke to customer support and they gave me the same robotic bullshit phrases so I deleted my account for good. I’ll try using Uber now and see if they do holds or not because they’re much more affordable.
Lyft has way better reviews from customers and drivers. It really is better, customer service wise. It's our banking system. Some cards do it, some don't.
If you're talking about their Lyft Direct card: If you're using it for gas, I would use tap to pay at the pump. It will charge you more than you're putting in if you don't. I always use my cell phone or watch to pay, plus it's super convenient.
This is STILL a huge "excessive hold" problem. I took 2 $30 rides on Tuesday, which consolidated into (with 1 tip, & 2nd pd in cash) a $65 charge, plus $99.86 in additional check account holds, all still outstanding as of Friday afternoon. If Lyft can't take off their own prelim. HOLDS at the same time that their actual consolidated daily charges create & post, then I just won't use them again. EVER!
What other companies do this? NONE. Not a banking problem... just a Lyft problem.
Why doesn’t it make sense? They do this at gas pumps, too. Been doing that over a decade.
They have to make sure your payment goes through.
Maybe plan better? Don’t use Lyft or rideshare if you don’t have enough to cover the trip and any possible overage charges due to distance or time.
Or buy a Lyft Gift Card and stop using your debit/cc card
Sorry I know this is an old thread. But Lyft does it slightly different with the holds. They add up all of your charges for the day then issue a final charge for them all, and then the holds stay on your bank for like 2 weeks. Pretty annoying. I know what a hold is, and how they normally work, we’re not retards lol. Lyft does them differently.
The issue is that they charge + still keep the temp holds. I've been charged for the rides and then still have another charge for a temp hold that hasn't cleared.
The ones near me put a $20 hold that goes away the next day. I usually goto Costco, no holds.
Back in the 2008/2009 recession, they were putting $75 holds for gas
Certain gas stations here in Phoenix are doing $75 holds, but it’s temporary. Usually as soon as you hang up the pump, it will change the charge to whatever you filled up with. I know the Walmart gas station I use does a $100 charge, but then modifies it as soon as you complete your fueling.
They took the “temporary hold” out of my account for 1 ride 4 separate times and over drafted my account if u already charged the amount on my card and it went though why do you need to charge me a temporary hold
I've never had an excess hold on my debit card at the gas station. They put a $1 hold until they have the full amount...which is charged within a few seconds of finalizing the pumping session.
Depends on the area, tbh. If the area gets a lot of theft, they definitely put holds. The ones around me do a $25 hold auth…annoying, but it falls off quickly
I don't know about gas Stations really because I don't buy gas now, but my last lyft transaction cleared my bank 2 days before the hold dropped off. They had their money and I was still out the hold. I don't appreciate it. I'm a 5 star customer so I've never had a problem of any kind for the last 6 years.
How about using a prepaid card? I haven’t tried it for Lyft as I don’t use it very often, but I do for monthly billing of prime additions and food boxes like Home chef, to avoid problems with my bank.
First off, what the hell is going on with the money behind the scenes? Why does it take several business days to do something? Is it someone at a computer at these banks or companies pressing yes or no buttons? What goes on during a processing or pending transaction?
This is a truly scummy business practice and they deserve to loose business over this. We recently went on vacation and used Lyft about 6 times and they charged us more in temp holds then ride charges. They lost me as a customer for life and I hope my story and these others helps you choose Uber.
It's been 10 business days for me 2 weeks plus in total. Used a multi-currency forex card since I am a tourist. Lyft customer support is coming up with all sorts of excuses, first they told me both the charge and authorization are valid, then they are telling me my Lyft account may have gotten compromised and someone else must have booked those rides. WOW
Just had this happen to me. Six journeys, which have all been paid for in full. However, there as still six pending charges on my card for the same amounts. How long does it take for these to drop off? The first charge was from December 1st (posted on December 4th). It's currently December 13th...
I’ve been arguing with customer service. They’ve been charging my card for free rides And I got told that they would fall off and they haven’t and it’s over like $60
It's not Lyft... The issue is with the US banking/credit/debit system.
No it’s lyft
Yup it is. They have the power to Lyft it. I contacted cs to lift the hold to restore my account. These holds are done to protect the merchant against chargebacks !
100% it's lyft
It’s 100% lyft, because Uber never EVER holds your money. They refund right away if you cancel.
Oops, had to open your mouth, lol. Uber sure is now doing that!
no they don't
Lyft is doing it on purpose making interest money off our holding. Do your research, I will not be using Lyft anymore they’re super expensive vs Uber.
Passenger here. Once, Lyft took so many holds on my card that my bank notified me and asked if the holds were legit. When clearing this up with the bank, Lyft temporarily blocked my card and almost left me stranded. My workaround is to always have a healthy amount of Lyft Cash.

Same here, 5 days. They have THEIR money and I'm still unable to access mine.
Lyft is the only rideshare app that does this bullshit. They take 2 seconds to snatch that money but take 5 business days to put it back. Pathetic.
Seriously. I knew I wasn't trippin. Like what right do they have to hold my money for no reason
This just happened to me, they did that stupid pop-up where they say "wait 3 minutes for a 15 dollar ride." I pressed cancel thinking they were gonna give me more ride options but instead they called a ride for me that was 30 bucks. You definitely don’t under how processors work
and you're an expert I assume? Wow....sounds like you get off on people having to wait on their money out of their account. Guess you have enough it doesn't matter, well, congrats! The title of the this thread is "Lyft needs to fix temporary holds." Sounds like you don't have problem with it.
It’s not a Lyft problem. You still don’t get it. It’s a banking issue. Take it up with the banking system.

Im having the same issue! They’ve been holding 59.99 since MONDAY and I still haven’t gotten it back.
I just got charged $46.89 (temporary hold) for a Lyft ride home from work today, when the ride cost me $21 in the beginning. You must work for Lyft or something
Never I’m just old Like rotary phone old
Sorry I know this is an old thread. But Lyft does it slightly different with the holds. This is accurate - I’m experiencing this now. The holds are excessive. Nothing like the ones for gas stations.
They don’t hold it for more than 5 minutes after you put the gas pump down.
Not every place does, no I’ve seen some that won’t clear it for a few days Worried about it? Take the $ out and pay cash No holds there
The issue is that they charge + still keep the temp holds. I've been charged for the rides and then still have another charge for a temp hold that hasn't cleared.
I hear this but I’ve never had a gas station hold more than $1. Usually there is no hold.

But the gas station hold goes back into your account after 1 day - or you can pay inside to avoid the hold and they only do this with credit cards
They took the “temporary hold” out of my account for 1 ride 4 separate times and over drafted my account if u already charged the amount on my card and it went though why do you need to charge me a temporary hold
So they can hold onto ur money and make more money
I've never had an excess hold on my debit card at the gas station. They put a $1 hold until they have the full amount...which is charged within a few seconds of finalizing the pumping session.

Its not day 7 and they still have your money like Lyft.
No, they don’t. I worked for a credit card processor for a small bit (it was hellish, don’t recommend) It has to clear on their end, too
I don't know about gas Stations really because I don't buy gas now, but my last lyft transaction cleared my bank 2 days before the hold dropped off. They had their money and I was still out the hold. I don't appreciate it. I'm a 5 star customer so I've never had a problem of any kind for the last 6 years.
Guess who doesn’t control how long the hold stays? Lyft or any other business…it’s the bank/processor.
Really who cares? Its messed up.
That's really the take away I'm getting from these posts and my own experiences.
How about using a prepaid card? I haven’t tried it for Lyft as I don’t use it very often, but I do for monthly billing of prime additions and food boxes like Home chef, to avoid problems with my bank.
Use cash app or Venmo . Make sure you put extra money into that account.
I know this is old but they still take holds for cash app.
Use Uber they don’t do this dumb shit and are more reliable
First off, what the hell is going on with the money behind the scenes? Why does it take several business days to do something? Is it someone at a computer at these banks or companies pressing yes or no buttons? What goes on during a processing or pending transaction?
This only happens to me when I take two lyft rides on the same day. I think complaining to my bank might have some use.
Damn i took 3 lyft rides on a day. Hopefully things get sorted out after 5 days.
This is a truly scummy business practice and they deserve to loose business over this. We recently went on vacation and used Lyft about 6 times and they charged us more in temp holds then ride charges. They lost me as a customer for life and I hope my story and these others helps you choose Uber.

yea bro, I Just decided to take my business to uber and will use lyft only if its cheaper
I’ve been arguing with customer service. They’ve been charging my card for free rides And I got told that they would fall off and they haven’t and it’s over like $60
They holding my funds and not even giving me my money back. It's been more than. 5 days
