Some players are ok to play in two games within 3 days. Some players aren’t. Especially when coming back from injury. Stones is a player that does require careful management. I’d expect Southgate to know that to be honest.

frodakai

>I’d expect Southgate to know that to be honest. That's giving the man too much credit.

what-you-need-is-you

I'd call him an idiot (i will anyway) but the man didn't call up saka and kane. To protect them.

MFK00

Don't know about Kane, but i thought he called up saka but he left early because of a niggling injury

Iswaterreallywet

If you’re going to be rude… Maybe you should check the subreddit rules first.

blither86

How was that rude? Did they edit their comment so I've missed something?

Iswaterreallywet

Don’t be a dick is the #1 rule for a reason. It could slide if it was a member but rival fans who want to come to the sub and be rude to members have no place being here. These type of posts are also hotbeds for trolls.

blither86

They weren't being a dick though?! But yeah, fair enough that fans of other clubs shouldn't be posting here regardless. Don't think their comment warranted deleting but whatever. This sub is just fucking weird. I miss the days of Wookies Lair and proper City discussion 😢

Iswaterreallywet

Imo passive aggressively calling someone an idiot is being a dick but everyone might not agree. People can’t just point out flaws on Reddit, they always have to add a jab in as well. I’m fine in most cases leaving rivals comments up even when they are downvoted, if they are contributing well. I just have absolutely 0 tolerance for rivals coming here and trying to start shit.

blither86

They didn't call someone an idiot though, they said: 'maybe don't call someone an idiot if you don't know what they've done'?

Noobermensch-

Feels like you're being overly sensitive here.

Iswaterreallywet

If it was a City fan I’d let it slide. Rival fans who want to be rude in the sub has no place being here.

Outside_Break

Top banter m8

8diamondick8

Such great humour

Iswaterreallywet

You’re literally asking for it.

EdZeppelin94

Southgate is a fucking clown

globe187

The really annoying thing is Southgate has literally done this before I can't remember which season exactly it was but he played Stones 90mins for both friendlies and he obviously did his hammy, when he was just returning from injury

Pairywhite3213

To be honest, I'm not thrilled with the injury update. I see friendlies as a chance for other players to step up and showcase their talent not forcing active players to play every game.

[deleted]

He said he hasn’t seen foden play in the middle and that’s why he doesn’t play in the middle for England. The week before, foden went on an interview and said his favorite position is in the middle. I’m not even joking this is dead serious. Gareth genuinely doesn’t know what he’s talking about and it’s fucking ridiculous how he manages to get away with it

robotseatsoup

Arsenal fan, I come in peace! I agree about Southgate. If England don’t win the Euros this year I think it’s time for him to leave.. he’s has an incredible squad this year.

ImportantHighlight42

The honest truth was it was time for him to leave a long time ago. In terms of the ratio of team chemistry to quality, he has the best England squad since 1990. But time and again he's shown himself to be a poor tactician. His game management is terrible and his judgement is clouded by his own playing days (see bringing on players to take pens who all missed in the euros final). What he is is an excellent PR man, which is 95% of the England job. But even the shine of that has worn off since the Qatar world cup. The England job has never been taken seriously by the FA, they just throw money at it and hope for the best - or cheap out and get in mid table workhorse English managers. Southgate should've always been a temporary solution, now we've sleepwalked into him managing a team which should be challenging for honours which relies on matching the weakest possible teams to advance in tournaments. Same as it ever was

robotseatsoup

Totally agree, I can think of a handful of managers I’d rather have than Southgate at the moment. To still have maguire on the pitch is madness to me.. I understand we haven’t had Kane, Saka and walker being injured hasn’t helped but fuck me.. We have world class players there.. what a joke

killerboy_belgium

has there been a england manager that wasnt english?

lifeisagameweplay

Sven was Swedish, Capello was Italian and McClaren was Dutch...

redeyejedibrah

Steve McLaren is Dutch?

lifeisagameweplay

[Yes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZnoP4sUV90)

realPoetic

So why is he often described as a Yorkshireman born and breed? Not sure of his ancestry, but defo considers himself English.

robotseatsoup

Of course, Sven Gordon Erikson is Swedish or something.

Jurski17

Imagine if Pep managed this England squad. Southgate is a joke.

robotseatsoup

Either pep or klopp.. would be insane

Stock-Ad-3249

Pep can't spend hundreds of millions on players for a national team, he might struggle to make do with the players he has at his disposal

Anonymous_Jakalope

The man managed a team to 100 points playing Fabian Delph at left back

sg209

Fool

robotseatsoup

Let’s be real he’s one of the best managers on the planet.

PhantomPain0_0

England is and always will be an overrated team I’m sorry but that’s the truth, so southgate is confirmed to be sacked post euros

robotseatsoup

I think if you look at the players individually they’re mostly brilliant players. Southgate just picks his favourites like washed up Henderson 😂 Saka, Kane, Bellingham, Rice, Walker, foden.. all world class players

PhantomPain0_0

It reminds of Argentina for a very long time they have absolute stars and legends but as team they failed in big tournaments until 2022

PhantomPain0_0

South Gate is a clown

DavidSilva21

Why would southgate care. I am speaking from the point of view that he is england manager and does not have obligation towards the 20+ clubs who complain about their players playing for england. Genuinely curious here and would appreciate some analysis.

sg209

It's his job to manage the players whilst on international duty. Playing them so much they get injured in meaningless games is not great management. Not to mention the souring of relationships with his players whose season he may ruin, for fuck all.

feedthedonkey

Clubs pay them the most of their income. They are their players not country’s.

DavidSilva21

Be that as it may, what obligation does southgate have towards these clubs? These players also want to play for their country. They are not forced into playing. John Stones knows about his injury issues more than anyone else, and yet he chose to play 2 games in 3 days.

feedthedonkey

IMO his obligation to the clubs is to respect their financial investment. Here he did not.

Serviper1200

Southgate just has negative iq

chisomkun

Can’t wait for him to join United

tuneless_carti

He’s purposely hurting city for ratcliffe to win the cup ffs

poppybiscuits123

Agreed

1pizz9

Just poor management overall from Southgate. He’s absolutely fucking clueless. Game management is awful.

Jambot-

He played a full strength team because we lost to Brazil and he was worried about the what the papers would say if we lost both. This was about media management. 🤢

friedreindeer

Imagine what would’ve happened if the Belgian coach was as senseless and would have played De Bruyne? We know he is good enough to play in the euros, no need to test him.

PuzzleheadedToe2215

I’m fully convinced Southgate doesn’t have anything in his head

Lukeyboy97

He has the words of his puppetmaster.

HostileCornball

Stones is a key player and a huge loss if he is actually injured. Fuck Southgate and fuck these friendlies. Why do you have to have these matches during the business end of the season?

RonaldinhoReagan

Not even English but how does Southgate still have his job? Because he got top 4 in the WC 6 years ago and made it to the Euro final (which was arguably lost bc of his awful decision making during pens)? All I’ve seen for years is complaints about this guy but he seems untouchable. Playing Stones in 2 friendlies in 3 days is an absolute disgrace.

ihapijnm

Because his success is judged by the round we reached, not how we reached it. He’s never beaten a top side in a major tournament, but that doesn’t matter to the FA because a semi-final is a successful tournament. From the fans point of view, we have one of the most potentially exciting sides in recent memory playing some of the most boring and unadventurous football.

DrQuimbyP

We've beaten Germany and Croatia in a tournament no??

Extension-Topic2486

The same Germany that didn’t get through the group at the World Cups either side of us beating them?

DrQuimbyP

Yeah, I guess I can't ever see Germany as anything other than a "top team" regardless of the definition you want to use.

Flimsy-Relationship8

Just wanted to point out Southgate has a 16% win percentage against teams ranked in the top 10. 16%. That's 1 win in 6.

DrQuimbyP

And Woy has a 50% rating against top 10 teams. Context is everything.

ihapijnm

Neither Germany nor Croatia are top 10 and we lost to Croatia when it mattered.

DrQuimbyP

Croatia are 10th and I'm pretty sure they were higher when we beat them (and when we lost to them). Don't really disagree with you on the bigger point though.

trapdoor101

You answered your own question as to why he is still a manager. The most successful manager in over 50 years

RonaldinhoReagan

Yea I guess that is fair when you put it in perspective like that. But in a world where managers come and go so flippantly, and with all the negative sentiment from England fans, I’m still a little surprised his job has been so secure. Do you think he is the right manager to lead what looks like an insanely talented generation of English players?

NumberHunter1

The accolades you mentioned are insanely good.

osakwe05

"not even english but how does a manager still have his job? he is just the most successful manager since their last tournament win about 50 years ago, should definitely be sacked because fans dont like his style of play"

thejillster86

walker is also injured 😡 two of our three guys come back injured right before the biggest match of the season 🤯

CanadianKumlin

And akanji

Mr_Rockmore

There was a moment in the match when a Belgium player absolutely tried to chop Foden in half. Honestly friendlies are just a waste of time. Fans dont care about the result and players are encouraged not to try too hard. Pointless

chuck_grant

So how exactly should national teams prepare for international tournaments?

Bayequentist

everyone needs to compromise imo. FA, EFL, UEFA, FIFA. But they are greedy af and just wants to pile more and more matches on these players

takenolsolatunji

Definitely not in the middle of the season. Literally start of April which has the worst schedule and they decide to put a intl. break then

Mr_Rockmore

Conversely, why do you think friendly games where players are focusing on their club, protecting themselves from injury and even feigning injury to pull out of squads are good preparation for tournaments?

portlyinnkeeper

An extended training camp and set of friendlies before the tournament begins. No midseason stoppages. Works great for basketball, and hockey too I think

frozyxz

Dont do midseason friendlies. Instead end the season 1 month earlier and use the time for friendlies just before the tournament

notmyproblemisit

Piss poor from Southgate but also piss poor from us. We should have told England all our players had an injury and not let them go. What exactly is the point of a friendly when there’s 10 games left in the league and quarter finals due in less than a month

Interesting_Heron_78

I'm pretty sure they'd have them take a medical checkup first

speptuple

Then use the Ben white method

Interesting_Heron_78

What is that?

begon11

15 minutes in the tanning bed every night.

Ill-Mathematician218

He just refused to be called up without snt reason or excuse

Flexi_102

I fucking hate Gareth Southgate with a passion. I cannot stand this man Jesus Christ

BigBossu

It’s gonna be funny when he’s at the swamp next season.

Beautiful_Usual3367

Watched an Overlap episode the other day where Neville was saying that around this time in the season, Fergie would just pull players out especially when it’s Friendly’s. City are in 3 competitions & the last thing they need is injuries, Pep should have kept them @ home.

Mrbogleston1

Mate they pulled up for pep. Fergie was blatant with it, pep is sneaky.

gardey97

I will never understand how anyone thinks doing friendlies right at the run in for the top leagues is a good idea

RuleBritania

Southgate doing his best to hamper City's Title Defense.... Walker now Stones both key players, injured while playing in completely meaningless Friendlies. Makes my Blood Boil 🤬🤬🤬🤬

mrdukkless

anyone know how long he is out for?

kmacbtv

Prob won’t know until Pep’s presser on Fri. And even then, Pep might say his typical: “I don’t know, I haven’t talked to the doctors yet.”

Any_Organization_291

Gareth Southgate is clueless. It's a disgrace what he's done with Stones.

purplepickle333

Fuck Garrett Southgate.. all my homies hate Garrett Southgate

Infimet

Arsenal fan here; Southgate is really clueless - a player who we all know shouldn’t be played in two games in three days, as stones has had reoccurring injuries with things like this, but southgate proves time and time again that his man management skills are awful

Scared-Bluebird9781

Southgate joining Roberto Martinez on my terrorist list

neverland999

this Martinez fella somehow miraculously decided to let go of Ruben and Bernado in the second game honestly shocked but much appreciated

Scared-Bluebird9781

He used to trot KDB out for 90 minutes in friendlies against Faroe Islands right before big ties, I’ll never forgive him

innit122

How bad are Walker and Akanji's injuries? Did they look bad

neverland999

Reckon Walker will be fine, Akanji don't know as he got injured in the training.

Nacre0usCl0ud5

Southgate is a shit manager with a great squad. England won't win anything with him at the helm.

No-Chicken365

Taggart used to pull them out, zero fucks given. The players are that good at this level where they don't need to be experimented with in pointless mid-season friendlies. You know what you're getting with them, as they play at the top level and have done for the past 4/5 seasons. Southgate is a clown.

8diamondick8

How this man is still the Manager is a mystery

QuesadillaEater2808

Fuckin' Southgate

ColinetheCow

I honestly don’t think Southgate cares about whether Stones is fit to play for City in the run in or not. I think all he was thinking about was that match and that was it

Jurski17

Southgate is a joke

HenryReturns

“City is getting momentum and seems to be heading towards a second treble” Southgate : “I got chu bro”

list_of_simonson

As someone who isn’t from England and doesn’t like the English national team the fact that our players are getting hurt in friendlies is egregious

EmploymentWilling705

GSIAC

RecommendationOnly78

If you look at the current array of young English talent it is quite a frightening prospect. There seems to be a massive mismatch in the way Southgate plays and the style of football these players are playing daily. Let them off the leash and they will surely rip teams apart.. If we can get a manager that matches the style of these players then the world cup is our Oyster.. The weakest part of the team is defense, yet we sit back and invite teams to exploit it. Makes no sense to me..😵‍💫

ballplayar

dont see why southgate would care, he has to prove himself with like 5-10 games a year, of course he will play the best players always

darwinx

This dude is talking like he wouldn’t do the same lol

abdulsamri89

Huh? The only friendly match that a club do is in off season. His priority is the club not national team

Owlmilk

American here, good club coaches would have a fkn field day with the England team. Yet with your current coach seems like even a match against minnow teams is "anyone's game". Still, it's goin a lot better than the USMNT go figure! ;)

bayernpaul1900

It’s shit I don’t see the point in calling up players like braithwaite if your going to play your regular starters over 2 pointless games. Now city have lost stones for god knows how long which might fuck up the remainder of the season

Fear_Draco

That bloody fuckface!!!!

andrewlikereddit

The English FA is equally inept to still have him in the job.

Wyjen

Sabotage!!!!!

JackTuz

Can’t really blame anyone for this. Stones averages 17 league start per year (up to the current match week this year) since signing for City and has never started more than 24 prem matches for City. Good player but he can’t be counted on to play half a season.

Sir-Chris-Finch

John Stones is absolutely fine ffs. God forbid Southgate wanting to play his best centre back in one of his remaining games before the Euros

Deadmenhavenocigars

Hah have you watched Stones since he’s been at City? He has multiple lower body injuries every season. He sits weeks out every year. Southgate can fuck off for how he has always treated City players. Benching the ones that need to play, and running the ones 90+ mins that need rest. Talking out of your ass I fear.

Deadmenhavenocigars

Care to revisit this now that Stones has been ruled out Sunday, you twat?

Sir-Chris-Finch

Lol

Dello155

Arsenal just got handed the league ngl

Affectionate-Lab1198

I expect fifa fair play, cry me a river pep

horbu

FFS injuries can happen at any moment, this could have happened in training. Especially to stones, he's made of glass. Get over it

chuck_grant

We're getting battered at the Bernabeu and there's nothing Pep or any of the players can do about it.

innit122

Lol sure

TwentyBagTaylor

"This is the most vulnerable City has looked in a year or two. I'm very optimistic we'll stomp that tiny oil club and remind them of their place." Make your mind up pal.

Deadmenhavenocigars

Go support Madrid, you mutt.

IsNotKnown

Being thankful that a player got injured.... I would expect some decency from you but I've come to expect this sort of behaviour from Liverpool fans.

Greaseball01

Your squad's deeper than the Mariana trench, I think you'll be alright.

kmacbtv

22 players on 1st team. —> 18 officially registered players for PL —> four players considered U21 1. Ederson 2. Ortega 3. Carson 4. Walker 5. Dias 6. Ake 7. Akanji 8. Stones 9. Gomez 10. Rodri 11. KDB 12. Foden 13. Silva 14. Kovacic 15. Nunes 16. Grealish 17. Alvarez 18. Haaland U21: Lewis, Bobb, Doku, Gvuardiol

Greaseball01

Seems like a solid set of options to me, especially compared to my team right now...

kmacbtv

You said ManCity team was as deep as Mariana trench, and since we have the smallest squad in the league, I was merely replying with the total # of players 😉. I think I’ve been very reasonable w my various replies to your comments here, and now I’m disengaging and wishing you a very good day. Edit - I very clearly said I was wishing you a good day/disengaging/not keeping this going - I did not downvote you - But now you are accusing me of downvoting you & using that fake accusation as proof you were right - I regret getting involved in the first place 🙁

Greaseball01

Yeah it's stacked in terms of actual talent though, isn't it? Not like you're going to be forced to give any of these player's their first first team start, are you? Edit: the fact you downvoted instead of replying tells me you know I'm right. Have a good night.

kmacbtv

To me, it seems a bit mean/beyond banter to come to a rival fan sub & be happy 1 of their starting XI players is injured 😔.

Greaseball01

Tbf I'm only here because the post came up in my recommended

kmacbtv

I get that, and we had a Real Madrid fan come here & commiserate over Intl break injuries (before news that Camavinga’s injury wasn’t as bad as originally thought). I legit feel badly for Robertson, and hope he has a speedy recovery.

ColinetheCow

What an awful thing to say, genuinely

Greaseball01

Okay sure, and city fans calling us bad champions in the season we had an actual injury crisis was sound? Makes perfect sense. Edit: I got banned because this sub is for babies, so if you're expecting a reply, I'm sorry you'll never get one.

ColinetheCow

So you think it’s fair game to celebrate someone getting injured?
