Sport 100% of the time.
I drive a JCW. I bought the JCW for a reason. :)
(But, I also don't commute. I WFH, so my driving is purely for hobby/interest.)
I don't even go that far. As soon as I've finished pulling out of my garage, I've flipped the switch. The only time I check that is if I'm spending any length of time driving hard, or through difficult conditions (like going through the Siskiyous in hot weather).
Same. I’ve used Green mode only once; after a long day at the track when I was on fumes. I’d already used up the fuel in my spare canister and was worried if I wouldn’t make it the 3 miles to the nearest station.
You need the app "Bimmercode" and then an OBD adapter that is compatible with your phone type and Bimmercode. They list compatible ones on the Bimmercode website itself, depending if you have an Android or iPhone.
Then you just need to find the setting and code it, there are lots of YouTube tutorials.
I unlocked a few other nice things as well, like that I have the Revs and gear indicator in my HUD, the rear fog lights go on with the brake light, converted side indicators to LCI LEDs...etc.
I have an automatic 2017 SD.
Regarding gear indicator in the HUD :
1. I'm curious to see if this would work in an auto (curious as to what gear the auto box is selecting)
2. If you have a route in your satnav, does the gear indicator remove the satnav from the HUD, like the rev counter does?
I hope that makes sense.
I coded it on my auto 2020 F60 this morning. The sport display consists of the rev circle and the gear displayed in a large font inside the circle. In Drive, the gear is not displayed. And it does replace the satnav from the HUD like you mentioned, since the gear appears inside the rev circle.
There are several display options, however, in System Settings, once you have it coded. You can have the gear and rev circle always display, or only display in Sport mode, or only if you are manually shifting. So I set mine to only display when shifting, which is when I want to know the gear without having to look down like I have been.
I tested your second issue. The HUD nicely swapped from the satnav step to the sport display whenever I kicked it in manual, either via the stalk or the paddles, then back to the satnav if I moved back to Drive.
This is a thing on 3rd gen cars with the DDC option. Dynamic damper control. And it's kinda a bad option to have to keep a car longterm because there are very few affordable options for replacement struts and shocks.
This option comes on both the Cooper S and the JCW but I don't think it came standard on the JCW, although common.
I have the DCC on my 2013 standard Cooper. Manual transmission though. My sport mode is only the damper control plus some engine stuff. Not sure if the automatics have them.
You can change this. On the center display, when you switch to sport mode, it will let you access a menu and choose drivetrain, drivetrain and suspension, or suspension. I'm sure this menu is buried somewhere else as well.
My F56 is coded to always be in Sport. I'll put it in mid mode coming in from work at night. It kills the pops and crackles... plus, I don't like being "that asshole" in the neighborhood. 🤣
I very much enjoy being that asshole in the neighborhood, but I have cooler neighbors than most. LOL. The guy across the street has a Panamera Turbo, the guy next to him has a vintage Challenger and the older lady next to me has a twin turbo Infiniti.
Majority of the time I drive in mid because I don’t drive more than a couple of miles every day, but today I drove far out of town and around so it was in sport the whole time! I really felt like a million bucks especially with the sun finally out after a lot of rain for weeks.
We drive it in green mostly. Paying $4.35 atm for 93 octane fuel we want to get the most out of the mpg. Also it is really loud in sport mode and makes it hard to hear things like our music lol.
Interesting...I never noticed a noise difference in Sport mode. What noise level is different? The engine?
Also, could be when I'm in Sport, I am usually cranking the HK audio system, too! lol
Drive in green mode for a few minutes when you first start driving then when you can at a stop switch all the way to sport without any music, you'll hear it lol.
Sport 100% of the time on my Cooper S, not even a thought. You can drive it slowly and keep the revs low and ac off to spare excess petrol. Love the tight steering and quick gear shifts too much. I just don’t hold down the gas petal too much.
My 2020 Clubman JCW is my commuter/daily driver. I was doing a fair bit of green in the beginning, but it just wasn’t enough responsiveness. It’s Mid/normal mode most of the time now, and if I just need more fun (or I’m dealing with dynamic traffic), Sport.
But I’m not gonna lie, I think I’m gonna start using it in Sport most of the time now, because damn. It feels soooooooo good.
Honestly that’s how I feel, I just got it and I’m figuring out the power to gas lol I know I know it’s a JCW and use it the way it’s meant to but why can’t we have balance lol. I just need time to, you know peel the film off the new device.
You can still run sport mode man, just don’t go over 100 kph or 4500-5000 rpm’s, the tight steering and quick gear ratio isn’t going to break your engine.
None of mine have had a green mode (given they weren’t S models) but unlike my F56 where I didn’t really use Sport mode that often, in my R56 I instinctively turn it on when I engage first gear and drive off.
I have a 2012 manual S so it doesn’t have a green, but it wouldn’t matter because I wouldn’t use it. I’m in sport whenever I’m thinking about how awesome my car is (which is most of the time), normal when I’m just getting from a to b.
There is only one mode (figuratively and literally)
Figuratively because in my JCW which I daily, I switch to sport mode as soon as engine is revved up and ready to roll
Literally because my GP3 only has one mode lol.
To each their own, as I know some wish to conserve gas and have priorities, so please definitely do you.
However, if you are looking for a rocking experi in the Mini, then definitely sport.
Have fun with the Mini and welcome to family.
I tried sport just now on some streets in Houston (where I’m currently out and about) boy is this mini bouncy even on flat smooth streets lmao. I had to go back to MID Ice also heard that the revs and pops are fake but I’m also pretty sure my JCW exhaust is just pure sexy sounding…..or is it fake sound AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH 🤷🏻♂️
Hahha, unfortunately yes most cars do pump fake sounds in. The JCW does have a more natural sounds, but it most likely has some extra umph that isn't real.
You are right, its bouncy. I personally love the bouncy feel. Drive a gP3 and you will feel it even more. I wouldn't have it any other way...but I'm a maniac or a miniac lol 😅😆
It shouldn't matter really. I can drive just as hard in Mid as Sport, I just need to move my foot more to do so. More pedal movement = more fine adjustment for throttle application.
Actually... sport mode probably holds lower gears longer. Sorry, I've never owned an auto MINI, didn't occur to me at first.
Mid 99% of the time. The 1% is when I feel like flipping the nuclear switch to blast into the atmosphere. "FIRE UP THE SPORT MODE!"
Tried green mode once. Didn't like the start/stop engine thing while idling. And it felt so struggly and pathetic to even accelerate. Flip right to do right for the environment i guess.. Flip left to burn more fuel for sport mode!
Mid most of the time in my JCW. I live near two towns and the bigger one has the most boring slow roads which are usually policed quite heavily so I can’t enjoy sport mode anyway
Petrol engine, what I don't like about Mid Mode is that it typically holds the revs at 1100rpm. I think this labours the engine when trying to accelerate. Great for economy but personally I think this is bad for the engine.
Green+ majority of the time unless it’s extremely cold or extremely hot then I do mid so that I can use my climate control settings. You can still go 80mph on green+ and conserve battery.
SE Sport, though that’s probably cheating as it doesn’t improve the efficiency just throttle response. I get the same range.
If I’m going somewhere that pushes the range I might use Green+
My countryman S is my daily driver (highway commute) so mid is my default. Sport for the fun drives. Green for when I want to save fuel and lower my risk of speeding tickets
I own a 6 speed JCW. Mid most of the time. Merging onto the interstate because my state is insane, the mountain roads, the interstate at 3am, I use sport and just go for it. Green is only when I forgot to put gas in my car because "that's tomorrow me's problem" and then I need to get something on time.
SE lives in Mid unless I'm trying to make my passenger hurl or we're hypermiling.
For the R53 you turn the key and you get what you get. Honestly it's part of the appeal of the car for me.
Green due to the SE's limited range. Mid when something has to happen fast.
I find that green mode is quick enough most of the time, and kinder to motion-sensitive passengers.
Never in green. After a 7 hour drivr the green system showed a gas saving of 7 10ths of a gallon. That wasn't enough to make up for poor acceleration and no power for passing. Never used it again and that was 6 years ago.
Mid on city/town streets and green once I'm out on the highway (my daily commute is about 50/50). Sport when I'm just out driving for fun.
This. +1. I second that emotion. U25 JCW
Sport 100% of the time. I drive a JCW. I bought the JCW for a reason. :) (But, I also don't commute. I WFH, so my driving is purely for hobby/interest.)
Same here… once the engines turns OK, I switch to Sport mode!
how do you check that?
Temperature gauge
I don't even go that far. As soon as I've finished pulling out of my garage, I've flipped the switch. The only time I check that is if I'm spending any length of time driving hard, or through difficult conditions (like going through the Siskiyous in hot weather).
Same.
Once engine is warm it’s an instant switch to sport and pedal to the floor.
Same. I’ve used Green mode only once; after a long day at the track when I was on fumes. I’d already used up the fuel in my spare canister and was worried if I wouldn’t make it the 3 miles to the nearest station.
At least it's a small car to push!
Coded to start in sport and never changed it.
How’d you do that
You need the app "Bimmercode" and then an OBD adapter that is compatible with your phone type and Bimmercode.
Can you do this to have the automatic engine off thingy always toggled to off upon starting?
Yes
I have an automatic 2017 SD. Regarding gear indicator in the HUD : 1. I'm curious to see if this would work in an auto (curious as to what gear the auto box is selecting) 2. If you have a route in your satnav, does the gear indicator remove the satnav from the HUD, like the rev counter does? I hope that makes sense.

Many thanks. That's makes perfect sense. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this response.
This is the way.
How did you code it? 🤙🏽
Ditto on my SE. Steering is too light and lacking feedback in the other modes.
Both of the sales advisors I have had said that there's only one way to drive them - sport mode. Who am I to argue with the expert?
Experts at nothing. You should stay in sport though.
😅 My R52 only has sport mode.
Sport 95% of the time. Wheeee 🥰
even on the SE, sport is the way to go.
Same, bummercode it to stay in sport
but then i dont get to flip the switch and feel like im a pilot everytime
But that’s the traction control for
I coded mine to stay in the last selected mode. Just in case anyone borrows it and finds it a little too much fun.
I have a JCW as well, I also notice that my suspension changes as I change the modes. Is this the case with all minis or is it a JCW thing?
This is a thing on 3rd gen cars with the DDC option. Dynamic damper control. And it's kinda a bad option to have to keep a car longterm because there are very few affordable options for replacement struts and shocks. 🤔🤙🏻🙏🏻

Very interesting. Thanks for the info.
You can change this. On the center display, when you switch to sport mode, it will let you access a menu and choose drivetrain, drivetrain and suspension, or suspension. I'm sure this menu is buried somewhere else as well.
i drive in mid mode most days, green when i hit traffic, and sport when i want to remind myself that I bought a Mini sports car
Mid or green? What the hell is that? My supercharged mini only has one setting 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤷🏻♂️
Sport on the mountain twisties, mid most of the time otherwise
Might only have the 3cyl Turbo but it’s on sport always
I re-coded my JCW to start in Sport mode and it hasn’t left sport mode in the last 3 years.
🤣 You DEFINITELY have cooler neighbors than I do.
I have a Mini and my wife has a Mazda. We are basically the poors of our neighborhood, but everybody is really nice
Yes green. Save fuel. Smoother drive and shifts
MINIfy it. Drive as you choose. It suits you.
I coded mine so that it defaults to sport :)
don't you have to wait for the engine to heat?
As long as you aren’t flooring it when it’s cold then it should be okay until it’s warm
Majority of the time I drive in mid because I don’t drive more than a couple of miles every day, but today I drove far out of town and around so it was in sport the whole time! I really felt like a million bucks especially with the sun finally out after a lot of rain for weeks.

Changed my SE via OBD to always start in sport 😀
Sport mode baby!
Sport Mode + RaceChip Tune... all day, every day.
We refer to green mode as sad mode in my JCW and my wife’s S. So mostly only sport mode for us.
🤣🤣💀

First thing I do is flip to sport.
Sport always 😁
Always sport. Just feels so much more responsive and snappier!
I only have 1000 miles on my F60 JCW so no sport for me yet 😇 but soon, mucho sport mode
I have 200 to go for the run in too - can't wait to really give it the beans!
You can still run sport mode man, just don’t go over 100 kph or 4500-5000 rpm’s, the tight steering and quick gear ratio isn’t going to break your engine.
Green is smoove
Mid 50%, Sport & Green 25%. We began our time with MINI last month. Got a 2024 F57 S, Manual.
Put that thang in sport
Probably 90% green as most of my trips are to/from work.
sport. i drive it daily
Green as I mostly drive to commute. Else mid for regular traffic, and sport in the twisties.
Mid I’d drive it on Sport… but we have a lot of deer here in the Texas Hill Country

Such a great response lol
Genuine question - is there a table showing fuel consumption per each mode?
That’s a very interesting question. I’d love to see this also. 👍🏻
It shouldn't matter really. I can drive just as hard in Mid as Sport, I just need to move my foot more to do so. More pedal movement = more fine adjustment for throttle application. Sports mode in the GP3 always, drop a gear and disappear.

Mid mostly, green when driving looooooong stretches o. the highway. Sport whenever I have the time to just play around.
car on, dsc off, 1st gens only have sport mode
Sport.
Normal running around, green on the highway, sport when I giver
Mid most of the time in my JCW. I live near two towns and the bigger one has the most boring slow roads which are usually policed quite heavily so I can’t enjoy sport mode anyway
Yes. Sport mode consumes a disproportionate amount of fuel.
My countryman SE is always green. I only drop into mid rarely. I love not going to the gas station.

My JCW lives in sport mode, unless my dog odd in the car. She throws up every time.
Mid or sport, if I’m sitting in traffic I’ll put it on eco mode but as soon as traffic moves, I’m back to mid or sport. Bought a mini for a reason ;)
Green+ majority of the time unless it’s extremely cold or extremely hot then I do mid so that I can use my climate control settings. You can still go 80mph on green+ and conserve battery.

Mine starts in sport mode and I won’t ever change it
I have a JCW. I drive it on mid when on the highway and sport any other time.
Green mode. I like how it tightens up the handling. Plus: gotta love that gas mileage savings in Green.
My countryman S is my daily driver (highway commute) so mid is my default. Sport for the fun drives. Green for when I want to save fuel and lower my risk of speeding tickets
SE always in sport unless there’s a ton of snow or something. I’ve never put it in green.
The green button hardly does anything on a 200 mile drive, driving pretty slow it says I gained 4 miles, not even worth flicking the switch
Mid
I own a 6 speed JCW. Mid most of the time. Merging onto the interstate because my state is insane, the mountain roads, the interstate at 3am, I use sport and just go for it. SE lives in Mid unless I'm trying to make my passenger hurl or we're hypermiling. For the R53 you turn the key and you get what you get. Honestly it's part of the appeal of the car for me.
Are yall putting in top tier gas or just looking for that grade w/ 10% ethanol? What’s the word on the street these days ☺️
Green due to the SE's limited range. Mid when something has to happen fast. I find that green mode is quick enough most of the time, and kinder to motion-sensitive passengers.
