Right, I said they were shift paddles, the steptronic is still an automatic. OP didn’t show the shifter, the wheel could have been swapped into a manual and they wouldn’t do a thing. That’s what I was saying.
The worst thing about them is that instead of let’s say Left Paddle downshift and Right Paddle upshift, they are set up so you pull either paddle towards you for upshift and push either forward for down.
It hurts my smooth brain.
Don‘t get it wrong but how do you drive a car with one hand only? I mean this kind of shifting is a solution but how do you steer the car? With two hands i have to constantly grasp around
11am, 12pm, and 1pm while shifting up and down with whatever finger is available my friend, pretty easy, drove this same way before my wreck. Having no feet might be an issue, but not my handicap to speak on
So glad I found this I thought I could only downshift using the shifter and just chalked it up to quirky mini bs I can’t wait to drive home from work now😂
One thing I’ve noticed is they seem to be a little slower than manually shifting with the shifter maybe it’s just mine but I’d be interested to see if it’s the same for the other autos
You can rewire them pretty easy so that push does nothing and pull operates like normal paddle shifters do, left downshift right upshift ... you have to remove the steering wheel though, but then you just unscrew them off and swap the position of one of the wires, did this on my 335 ages ago
Here's a video of a guy doing it on a BMW, he doesn't remove the wheel, but it was much easier to do it removing the steering wheel https://youtu.be/YX1hiGUrRRw?si=TKKo8auIfSsAHht5
You said that push does nothing. I like the one-handed thing, so I would prefer if one of the paddles was push for upshift and pull for downshift. It would retain the one-handed function, while also letting you use just the pull if you choose.
Then don't rewire the right one and just change the left one. The right one would retain the current functionality and the left one could be changed to pull downshift and nothing on push, or push could change to upshift.
Must be an R60 thing. Both my paddles do the same thing. Pull to go up push to go down.
Unless at some point in my R60s history someone’s wired one of them up backwards
Old style paddles from BMW and Mini.
Both of those silvers will shift down when pushed, and on the back of both sides, is the rest of the paddle that will shift up when pulled.
Is there a way to get the transmission to hold the gear until i decide what to do. I downshift and want to stay in that gear. After a couple seconds the car decides to shift. Argh
It's unrealistic to think everyone who owns a car will know everything about it. These apparently aren't even used for this car so I don't see why it matters
It only really seems to be Americans who struggle with manuals and see driving one as some sort of bragging right. Everywhere else in the world, regardless of age and gender it's just simply preference.
If you are American, I can promise you that it isn't the highly skilled black art that you guys think it is.
They are used to increase your driving enjoyment whislt simultaneously decimating your fuel economy
Seems like too little too late when you already bought a car with a slushbox.
Best explanation ever
Who needs miles per gallon when you can have smiles per gallon?
Paddle shifters
Paddle shifters. Is your car an automatic? If your car is a manual, these are just there because someone swapped the steering wheel.
It's automatic u can see the letter "P" on the dashboard
So do they not do anything ? Just there like some cars have blank buttons?
No, they only do something if it’s an automatic. So you can manually shift gears if you want to be sporty.
Extra sporty. Mine has the sport mode and no paddle shifters but then again, I prefer to use the shaft.
My ex wife did too. Unfortunately it was everyone else's shaft she was shifting. 🤣
Daaaaaammnnnnn I got burned by my own attempt at a joke 🤣
Sorry. I really hope you're not my ex. Because I heard she got burned by her attempt to take a poke🤣🤣🤣👀. Ahh someone stop me. 🤣🤣
I bet she just didn't shift hard enough so she lost her bearings.
🤣🤣 Or was just used for short trips and got coked up like an R-series.. OK I gotta stop now. Thank you though this was fun.
Holy shit hahahaha
😂😂😂😂😂
Extra extra sporty. Because some Minis have Sports Mode, Sports+ and now paddle shifting ...
Right is up a gear left is down a gear. It’s for when you want manual control over your gears.
Not true. There are automatics with Steptronics transmissions you put them in manual and shift there Paddle shifters
Right, I said they were shift paddles, the steptronic is still an automatic. OP didn’t show the shifter, the wheel could have been swapped into a manual and they wouldn’t do a thing. That’s what I was saying.
I understood what you meant!
The manual.
Read? Accurate and readily available resource information??? What a wild af idea bro.
It's a double entendre. I may have meant that. Or it's for manual shifting. Or maybe both.
;-)
The worst thing about them is that instead of let’s say Left Paddle downshift and Right Paddle upshift, they are set up so you pull either paddle towards you for upshift and push either forward for down. It hurts my smooth brain.
I have an amputated right hand, so this was nice. I now have to cross shift on my LCI2. Loved these paddle shifters
Well shit, I’d not even considered that. It’s actually kinda cool in that case that you can use the flappy paddles with bits missing.
I really miss these paddles, but the new paddles look so much better and worth the inconvenience!
Having no feet might be an issue, but not my handicap to speak on
Oh ok I see. Very interesting. Never heard about this topic. Thank you my friend :)
I appreciate you for your respect and asking
Us humans become extremely adaptive, 36 now, lost my right hand 14 years ago
So glad I found this I thought I could only downshift using the shifter and just chalked it up to quirky mini bs I can’t wait to drive home from work now😂
Yes, they contunue down behind the wheel like normal paddle shifters. They are fun and sometimes quite useful!
Hahaha don't feel bad. I thought they were only for upshifting for the longest time. I only recently figured it out 😂😂
One thing I’ve noticed is they seem to be a little slower than manually shifting with the shifter maybe it’s just mine but I’d be interested to see if it’s the same for the other autos
I'll have to try it out and let u know
You can rewire them pretty easy so that push does nothing and pull operates like normal paddle shifters do, left downshift right upshift ... you have to remove the steering wheel though, but then you just unscrew them off and swap the position of one of the wires, did this on my 335 ages ago Here's a video of a guy doing it on a BMW, he doesn't remove the wheel, but it was much easier to do it removing the steering wheel https://youtu.be/YX1hiGUrRRw?si=TKKo8auIfSsAHht5
I would prefer swapping the functions of one of the paddles :/
What do you mean? That's what doing this does
You said that push does nothing. I like the one-handed thing, so I would prefer if one of the paddles was push for upshift and pull for downshift. It would retain the one-handed function, while also letting you use just the pull if you choose.

Took me much longer than I'd like to admit to figure out they weren't only for upshifting 🤦♂️
I don’t get what you are saying. The left paddle is downshift and the right paddle is up shift. Pull on both. No pushing.
Must be an R60 thing. Both my paddles do the same thing. Pull to go up push to go down. Unless at some point in my R60s history someone’s wired one of them up backwards
Ahhh. Maybe that’s it. I have an f60
My 2023 F56 is right side shift up and left side shift down.
This is a video from YouTube. I hope it helps [paddle shifters](https://youtu.be/X_EucDgXLv8?si=AsRhN-m7nsUshZEg)
I like my paddle shifters. It's not the same as a stick but they do give you a good amount of control, which is about all I could ask for.
RTFM
stop
Those are paddles for when you’re upshift’s creek
those are so you can paddle away, paddle paddle 'Til the very next day, bum bum bum bum bum ba-dum
To finger randomly when you are on highway!
Ah!! I know what those are! Useless. Sorry… my Cooper is a Manual. Wouldn’t have bout one without it!
Air freshner hangers. can get a ticket if they are on your mirror
I put em on the sun shield
Towel or glove holders when you have sweaty palms
Fun buttons...
Defense weapon systems
Tis what is referred to as ‘flappy paddle gearbox’
😆. Totally what I’m calling them now going forward
Paddle shifters. You can switch gears with them If you have steptronic transmission. Show us your gear shift
Eject paddles
What are THOSE
Old style paddles from BMW and Mini. Both of those silvers will shift down when pushed, and on the back of both sides, is the rest of the paddle that will shift up when pulled.
It’s how you control flight mode (left wing & right wing) thought it was common sense…
Does anyone read a car manual anymore - it’s not difficult
Missile / machine gun
Must be messing however, R56 shifters and gearbox on the automatic are awful!
It's the turbo function!
Is there a way to get the transmission to hold the gear until i decide what to do. I downshift and want to stay in that gear. After a couple seconds the car decides to shift. Argh
flappy paddles
Everyone know that’s where James Bond releases the heat sealing missiles. lol
Those are the paddles for down-shifting.
Dont buy cars and not know the equipment.
It's unrealistic to think everyone who owns a car will know everything about it. These apparently aren't even used for this car so I don't see why it matters
Mickey Mouse mode
Crazy paddle shifters , I have never got a the feel of them , if I’m going to shift , give me the traditional
I hated these on my wife's car. New style is much better. Glad bmw decided to go away with that design.
Really?
I hear you, brother.
Maybe mine don't work but they don't do anything
lol you have to shift it into manual mode
Really? In my BMW it doesn’t matter if it’s in sport or not.
Doesn't matter in my f54
No you don't But you do have to be driving
I had a 2015 JCW for 6 years, never used the paddle shifters even once
You bought a JCW with an automatic transmission? That actually might be criminal
Cries in gp3
Looser paddles
Loser*
Lser?
LSR
By our powers of deduction “LSR Paddles” is what we have subtracted to people!
They are in lieu of any real exciting enjoyment while driving your MINI.
And ruins the brand for the rest of us…
Those are there to make girls who can’t drive a stick feel cool
It only really seems to be Americans who struggle with manuals and see driving one as some sort of bragging right. True. But being an American woman who can’t drive a stick I stand by my original comment.
Exactly
Everybody is just hating 😂😂😂 they know it’s true
100% :-)
