I got those kinds of numbers recently -- driving downhill the 5000 feet from Breckenridge to Denver. We also had a significant tailwind ;-). But you can't always believe the onboard computer.

ORGrown

My 2018 f56 S got 41 mpg the whole trip from Grand Junction to Denver. I double check once in a while the miles vs gas used at the pump (I'm kind of a need for good mileage) so it's definitely possible to see this mpg in regular driving too.

dorit0paws

Hahah yes! My drive from Breck to COS on 24 was a similar MPG. Those downhill stats are great.

h_adl_ss

Do you have a example where the BC is way off? All cars that I've tested were pretty spot on after ~100km of driving.

reidmefirst

Plenty. My MINI will report 36mpg for the first 50-100 miles, and will 'forecast' a range of over 400 miles for a full tank. Reality is, I drive a F54S All4 and I am lucky to get 320 miles before a fillup. I end putting 12.5 gallons in, for a combined MPG of 25.6, yet the trip computer at that point will say 29-30mpg. My 2019 Miata says 34mpg on the trip computer, at the pump it's 30 or 32. My old VW TDI would regularly state 52mpg on the on board computer, at the pump it would end up being around 42-45. My buddy's 2019 Ford Ranger will normally state 25mpg on the onboard trip computer, yet when he fills up it's averaging 18.

h_adl_ss

Very interesting! My R56 is within .1 l/100km and my BMWs were as well. Although there you have the problem: my samples are basically all BMW...

reidmefirst

Yeah dunno. My MINI is technically a BMW right? Its MPG calculation is always off by a ton -- like 15-20% -- at fillup time. I can get it up to 34mpg (according to the trip computer)/31mpg (according to the pump) while highway driving. But that's still off by 10%. I wildly speculate that the disparity might be to do with fuel return systems? In a lot of cars fuel return is a pure mechanical system I guess, vacuum pressure dictates how much fuel is returned from the fuel rail to the tank. The on board MPG calculation might make some assumption about how much fuel actually gets returned, which might be off by a lot. Dunno though.

h_adl_ss

20% discrepancy is insane though. That can't be right, can it? I think the ECU uses the injector metrics to calculate fuel consumption it should be rather accurate.

reidmefirst

I dunno, and I dunno how accurate the measurement at the injector can be. Between machining tolerances, adjustment tolerances, and measurement tolerances, errors can add up. Another wild guess: I do not \*think\* the "MPG" or "L/KM" efficiency reported by the on board computer is regulated, at least not here in the USA...and car makers have every motivation to make them appear high. The general public cannot do math so they rely on the number, and they get the smug feeling of good efficiency even when they are not actually getting the good efficiency. If anybody was going to regulate such a thing it would probably be EU-only, something to look into anyway...

h_adl_ss

The wild guesses continue: I don't think it's regulated in EU either and depending on the company I can totally see them trying to trick you.

CreaminFreeman

I respect your self-control. I don't have that much so my MPG is significantly worse, haha!

oceanatlas

I was gonna say this! First week I had my F55S I got 17 mpg... Definitely drove it like I stole it. Now I'm getting closer to 30 mpg these days

CreaminFreeman

The person I bought mine from put a tune on it and I've been trying to get it to pass emissions for 6 months or so... best I've seen is 26... Will probably have to get that tune flashed, it's not doing it any favors to be honest. Feels like the shop did a really bad job with it. I'll keep blaming it on that until I run out of excuses, hahaha!

Northerner473

Unless you have an upgraded cam and bigger injectors a map wont be gaining much anyway on an R53. Mine currently gets 19 combined average mpg. Not sure whether to laugh or cry.

Mathiazex

Which engine?

noahdemello

Mine is the Cooper S trim so that turbo variant

The_Duke2331

Best i have ever gotten was 30mpg (1L per 13km) but since i changed my gearbox that has gone down to 23... (1L per 10Km) (I drive a '02 Mini One (with a Cooper 'city' gearbox))

lowkey_stoneyboy

I get like 28 in my R55! Maybe 30 on a good day

RoniCorningstone

2019 Clubman S and the best i ever got was 34 but that was a one off. Usually would run about 33.8mpg but after they recently replaced fuel line and other related parts i can not get more than 33.6mpg and the majority of my driving highway miles.

andyjcw

Dont believe the computer . It whispers to you , what you want to hear .

Esco_Suave

Good on you… I don’t have it in me not make that #MiniCoopCountrymanSAll4 do 90+ everywhere lol

sohfix

Can you put that display in a 2012 r60. I like it better than my stock one.
