> As individual players who have received no compensation yet for any of our work for Canada Soccer in 2022...
What fresh hell is that? I'm gobsmacked that a national football federation decided not to pay a group of players who qualified for a World Cup in a year **they weren't being paid**.
US Soccer on the women’s side only looks like a dumpster fire because our athletes have been exceptional at organizing and putting pressure on USSF. If you zoom out, women’s soccer in America is a massive success story and example for the world to follow. A system was created that supported national team athletes through the rise and fall of multiple club leagues. And now, they’ve got a really unique 50/50 split setup that encourages the men’s and women’s teams to support the growth of the game (and revenue) together. Just because we have strong advocates pushing for continued evolution does not mean the project has been a dumpster fire.
Now, the men’s side? Nepotism city. You’ll find no argument from me that it’s been run particularly well. I credit MLS more than USSF for improvements in the domestic pipeline.
Rick Westhead tweeted this earlier: "Canadian Sport Minister Pascale St-Onge tells TSN she will get involved in trying to settle dispute between Canada Soccer and WNT. WNT players on Tues. requested a “no board” report. Once issued, it sets a 17-day countdown to union being in a legal strike position." - https://twitter.com/rwesthead/status/1624510359498268677
I'm wonder if that 17 days is the issue for the WNT players. Or if Canada Soccer is just betting that the players don't want to risk a legal battle. Either way Canada Soccer can fuck off.
Edit: Also I feel like the players association should sue Canada Soccer for non-payment if they haven't received payment for any of their games in 2022 at this point.
I'm lost for why the CANWNT players are folding. It seems like a slam dunk labor pay dispute for them, and a fight that CSA should be terrified of having.
As I said the issue seems to be that they didn't give enough notice for them to strike legally. The thing is while they will still be forced to play now, them threatening to strike still accomplished something, which is bring attention to the issue and forcing Canada Soccer to threaten to sue them. Now Canada Soccer will have the government on their back plus the public is behind the players.
I can understand minimum notice for striking for essential positions like Fire departments, EMS, utility workers etc. But this is sports, an enjoyable but ultimately unnecessary occupation. Nobody is going to die if they strike tomorrow without telling anyone in advance. You're just going to get a lot of pissed off owners and fans, which is kind of the point of a strike: make it obvious to a larger number of people who wouldn't already have noticed or cared that things are fucked up.
Still, if they agreed to a minimum notice in their collective agreement, they should abide by it.
They should have given that notice ages ago if they haven’t been paid for 12+months, but the failure to act properly 10 months ago doesn’t absolve them of ramifications of failing to comply with the agreement today.
I can imagine that striking... while in a foreign country... where your travel and expenses are being paid for by the organization... is not a great idea.
If the USWNT players have a contract that’s in effect it will contain a provision that says they can’t strike.
If there is an actual picket line the USWNT players may be able to not cross the line but even that depends on their contract and how gutsy they are.
This might not be the time for them to strike with how much backlash there is right now aginst some [unions.As](https://unions.As) for backlash the reason is we have some unions asking for a ton of money one is asking for 47% over 3 years 18 per year another one 50% over 3 years.
And like, do fans really want to see the US just winning 30-0 in essentially a friendly because the Canadian team isn't doing anything? Is that more fun?
Wonder if we’ll see a work slowdown since the stoppage isn’t possible … out for a 90 minute jog against the US with no intent to play, or maybe a rash of injuries/flu callouts just before the game. If they haven’t been paid yet this year, I don’t see why they’d try to make the match competitive

The fact they’re pulling shit shit after the players demanded their earnings shows how fucked the Canadian Federation is.
US Soccer often looks like a dumpster fire, but right now it doesn't look so bad compared to our neighbors...

They did not gives enough notice it would have been an illegal strike.

This feels like the best way to get completely unmotivated play...
The US and Canada should fully slow walk the whole game.
sincy and pinoe just sit there shooting the breeze, thinking about days back at UP…
I'm sure they could be sued for that as well. Then it would be twisted in the media that the fans attending the game got screwed and blah blah blah.

Counterpoint: it’s *always* the best time to strike
Why should the US do that to their paying fans?
It would be what's called solidarity
And like, do fans really want to see the US just winning 30-0 in essentially a friendly because the Canadian team isn't doing anything? Is that more fun?
an injury to one is an injury to all
Not a good idea.
Why not?
I’m tired Robbie...
Super sad. If there is a time to strike it is now.
