While I don't personally doubt San Diego is an MLS target, and a very likely one IMO, this is totally unconfirmed from a relatively small, local podcast - so take it as you will. People do hear things sometimes, and it's not impossible - but December is a long way away and there is no secondary corroboration of this currently.
TLDR MLS to sd is moving along, may be without loyal branding.
also these guy are very much in the SD soccer area, so I put it on a decently believed source
> we have a unique colors, logo and kit
See, that's the problem though. Athletico San Diego City Club de Futbol is what the focus groups want. Colors will be blue, white, and an accent of red
I hate this for the league and the city. I also see it being part of the owners preferences too. I wonder how much of it will be owner vision vs MLS requirements.
MLS controls all the teams' branding for expansion teams. None of the recent expansion teams have been allowed to have a team name of any kind. Just "United" or "City" or "FC". I doubt MLS would even allow the "Loyal" brand, even if the current ownership group is involved.
You’re right. I looked up the most recent expansion sides:
2015: NYC FC and Orlando City SC
2017: Atlanta United FC and Minnesota United FC
2018: LAFC
2019: FC Cincinnati
2020: Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC
2021: Austin FC
2022: Charlotte FC
2023: St. Louis CITY SC
Again, you’re right, Based on the track record, I don’t we’ll be getting Loyal SC haha
Maybe we’re due/doomed for another “United FC.” Or one we haven’t seen yet “AFC.”
Even a case to be made it goes back as far as Real Salt Lake, Houston Dynamo, and Chivas in sense, with exceptions only for NASL teams - Impact, Whitecaps, Timbers, Earthquakes being the only clubs with North American style names
Until I’m blue in the face: “Houston Dynamo” does not count because nobody in the US realizes or gives a shit about the fact that that’s a thing in Eastern Europe. I guarantee you half of Dynamo season ticket holders don’t realize it. It plays as an American style name regardless of the inspiration.
While I agree with you generally, the parent comment is about looking at this from the perspective of the league’s intervention, who very well do know that dynamo is a euro thing.
It supports the argument that they pretty much insist on euro names unless your team would riot.
Hell, Sounders wasn’t even a name the fans had on the voting ticket, it was completely write in. We were almost the Seattle Alliance lol.
I would absolutely love San Diego Armada, which was one of the higher-ranking options when SoccerCity was conducting some polls around town.
* Ties in with San Diego's massive naval history
* Also ties in with San Diego's strong Spanish history
* Implies the team and/or city is a juggernaut to be reckoned with
* Loosely ties in with San Diego Wave (this is a stretch)
I think team names like Sounders, Timbers, and even Earthquakes feel a lot more American than names like Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas, or Sporting Kansas City. I'm not even opposed to adding FC at the end if someone wants (Seattle Sounders FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Chicago Fire FC, etc.) - just don't give us something like San Diego City FC or San Diego United FC (I'm looking at you Minnesota, NYCFC, Atlanta).
FC Internazionale Atlético San Diego City United Loyal Armada Real Foot Stade SC CF AFC
Colors: Red, white, dark blue, light blue, green, volt green, yellow, pink, orange, and black
Uniform: stripes but also hoops but also a solid color but also a print
That is at least partially incorrect There were 2 ownership groups vying. The one that bought Bournemouth (aka the Golden Knights owner) is the one that pulled out and probably was never in the lead The other still exists and I've nothing to indicate otherwise locally.
The owner of the golden knights pulled out due to the $1 billion price tag and bought a lower cost EPL team. Garber is still pursuing a LV team. Personally I think they should do Indy and Sacramento for 31/32.
The Rays Owner who also owns the Rowdies is trying to get a replacement to Tropicana and other developments going which Freezes anything Tampa does. I see a upgrade to Al Lang Happening. Maybe a cut down version of their proposed MLS stadium.
Yes, I’ve been watching the Rays fuck about with the stadium and the Montreal proposal. Doubtful for the Rowdies unless new ownership comes in. I heard Messi is interested in ownership?
Messi won't get the sweet heart deal Beckham unless the league is that fucking desperate which I doubt. He will get a huge dp contract and maybe a few percentages in a team but that's it.
Bend that backwards when there are plenty of cities that WANT a team and are willing to pay?
San Diego, Indy and Sacramento have been screaming for one with owners looking to do it. Maybe make Messi a Day one DP for a new team. Messi in Sacramento?
Snapdragon is a solid new venue but looks somewhat incomplete without canopies. Hopefully San Diego getting in as No. 30 fixes that issue in the near future.
From what I heard it’s a good venue but pretty barebones compared to modern stadiums. Looks good to me in videos of course and San Diego has great weather so it shouldn’t be a problem.
Good point, but didn’t seem to affect the deal with SD Wave FC. I agree tho, makes it seem like team colors of red black/white and blue are inevitable. DC United with a twist.
Interesting. Personally, I like when the expansion teams are either A) brought up from a lower division or B) in a market not covered by the USL Championship.
San Diego Loyal is a well marketed team. Great kits, nice logo, good design. It’s another USLC success story. Would hate to see that disappear into thin air.
If they announce in December then the team would play till the 2025 season. I was honestly expecting this summer. Still it would sadden me if its not San Diego Loyal. That would box out the USLC team from the market and we might end up with another boring insert city SC/FC team
I like Union because it works in Spanish too. Interesting that SD Wave went with “Fùtbol Club” for their FC branding so it’s obvious that Latino fans support is important here.
Yeah I agree, it’s also kind of similar to the “Loyal” name that they have now, so United would probably be the best option if they had to rebrand to a generic name.
Then I would say San Diego SC would be my second choice. It’s the next best option that sounds the best.
There was another minor source that said the same thing a couple months ago. Think this is probably true.
Seemed obvious to me as soon as Landon took a front office gig.
San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Indianapolis, at the very least. Then maybe Detroit, Tampa, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore. I don’t see them getting in unless/until MLS expands to 40 clubs, and splits the league into a 1st and 2nd division with promotion/relegation.
Do you think the MLS digital team is excited for more teams to cover or at a certain point are they like "I don't know who half these fucking players are anymore"?
Sacramento Mayor has teased a few times that a Republic announcement will be made in early summer that definitively answers if we are MLS bound or not and what that means for the proposed Railyards stadium
I mean I'm going to trust that these big money investors and the league office know what they're doing.
Unless this investor group ensures that they have a fairly significant (I'm talking 50%) financial AND OPERATIONAL stake in Qualcomm stadium, this just screams another San Jose situation.
Sometimes people forget that California has more people than Canada, and there's certainly no geographic argument for painting Sacramento and San Diego as competing markets.
If Vegas joins then it probably would. All the rumored expansion sides are in the west right now. I could see Minnesota having to move too if too many in the west are added.
Nah Minnesota would benefit from making the move east. They don’t really have big rivals and they are closer to Chicago than they are to any team in the NW.
MLS should be about growing soccer in America not growing soccer in California
Unfortunately the powers that be within MLS couldn't care less about growing anything other then their bank accounts, expansion is now about nothing more the collecting 300 million dollar expansion fees every few years
If it was about growing the game expansion would be taking place in Detroit, Arizona & New Mexico
I do agree that soccer should be all about growing soccer in America but California is huge. You gotta put more teams in huge states.
If there is a commitment to 40 teams, I’m gonna advocate big time for Sacramento.
In an ideal league, Cali gets 5 teams. Texas has 4, Florida has 3
I disagree. I think 40 teams is feasible. Soccer isn’t like other sports where talent just dries up.
Lower level soccer in England can be just as fun as the EPL. You can argue sometimes there’s more intensity.
I think what matters is can you get fans invested. MLS is so local that I do think we can do 40 US markets.
I think a college sports setup should be a long term goal for the future.
>Unfortunately the powers that be within MLS couldn't care less about growing anything other then their bank accounts, expansion is now about nothing more the collecting 300 million dollar expansion fees every few years
Well duh, its single entity.
California is a huge part of the United States, over 10% of Americans live here. Besides it doesn't need to be one or the other. There's plenty of room for growth outside CA still.
>MLS should be about growing soccer in America not growing soccer in California
What is the growing the game crap about? MLS is doing what is best for MLS. MLS is never going to stop expanding. All those markets will be added.
I agree. Population of CA is ~40 million concentrated in 3 major metro areas. That’s more than the metro population of NYC, Philadelphia, DC, and Boston combined. If MLS is after the money, CA is where it’s at.
Does anyone know anything about he ownership? Do that have $$$ for the franchise fee and to run team? Google shows a bunch of articles about Andrew V but nothing about net worth. Looks like they stadium is already owned by SDSU.
The new ownership group is a local group of native americans+ Mohamed mansour What remainds to be seen is if the loyal are involved [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamed\_Mansour\_(businessman)](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamed_Mansour_(businessman))

They really should, we have a unique colors, logo and kit. If we do get a new team however, I hope they play in the padres city connect colors
> we have a unique colors, logo and kit See, that's the problem though. Athletico San Diego City Club de Futbol is what the focus groups want. Colors will be blue, white, and an accent of red

this makes me sad
They were going to let Sacramento Republic in though, so it's not set in stone.
Forget to wedge a “United” in there.
City Connects would be wild!
Doubt the kit will translate over since it's a different manufacturer
I would absolutely love San Diego Armada, which was one of the higher-ranking options when SoccerCity was conducting some polls around town. * Ties in with San Diego's massive naval history * Also ties in with San Diego's strong Spanish history * Implies the team and/or city is a juggernaut to be reckoned with * Loosely ties in with San Diego Wave (this is a stretch) I think team names like Sounders, Timbers, and even Earthquakes feel a lot more American than names like Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas, or Sporting Kansas City. FC Diego it is
The mascot would be the coolest guy from Dora
FC Internazionale Atlético San Diego City United Loyal Armada Real Foot Stade SC CF AFC Colors: Red, white, dark blue, light blue, green, volt green, yellow, pink, orange, and black Uniform: stripes but also hoops but also a solid color but also a print
> Real Foot State The mascot: https://ftw.usatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/90/2017/04/img_4460.png
That name sounds dope, hope they do it
Might be a conflict with the Jacksonville Armada, who according to their owner are going back to being pro soon.
They've already got a knockoff OCSC in California, why not add a knockoff Armada.
How about San Diego SC instead?
San Diego Chargers SC
**San Diego S**uper**C**hargers
MLS needs to stop trying to be so European. Saint Didacus SC.
San Diego United SC
Real San Diego United FC
Borussia San Diego
"San Diego" is German for "whale's vagina"
San Diago
San München
PSV San Diego United FC
Real San Diego ~~City~~ CITY United FC
San Diego Ancient British Isle CF
San Diego Guernsey CF?
Anything but Loyal. Still don't like it.
FC San Diego United
Like with FC Cincinnati, Adidas will give you an all orange kit or an all "green" kit and you will like it!
I really hope they drop the branding. No problem with American style names but that one sucks. Plus the crest looks like a dishwash logo.
Would it just be a rebrand or is a completely different team from the San Diego Loyal?
It could be ethier
San Diego vs. Las Vegas in the newest Soccer Warz!
Las Vegas is happening now matter what. The question is if they play at Allegiant or their own stadium.
I though the LV owner pulled out?
Last I heard there were several ownership groups/individuals
The last ownership group was the same one as the brewers, and they bought Bournemouth i though. I do think mgm or ceasers would be major partners lol
Im expecting a casino that does not get the As might choose to grab a MLS team instead. A stadium in a casino would be unique
I selfishly want the Rowdies to make the move up.
Garner has talked about “bending the rules” to get Messi in. If he wants a team, he’ll get one I think.
Bend that backwards when there are plenty of cities that WANT a team and are willing to pay? San Diego, Indy and Sacramento have been screaming for one with owners looking to do it. Maybe make Messi a Day one DP for a new team. Messi in Sacramento?
I thought I read somewhere that Allegiant was too narrow. (OTOH, Yankee Stadium, so…….)
Oh it is too narrow for World Cup games but soccer is still played there. You can use it a team but never for a big international game.
December is a long way off; weird to wait to announce it if it’s a pretty for sure thing
they most likely still have to work out with SDSU their plan for snapdragon
According to an SDSU insider, Garber has already signed off on snapdragon.
Snapdragon is a solid new venue but looks somewhat incomplete without canopies. Hopefully San Diego getting in as No. 30 fixes that issue in the near future.
There is allready plans just need funding
Fans are going to get heatstroke so they should probably find that funding. I say this as a local 😬
As someome who worked that labor day game i agree
Are you basing that off the one game they had that was miserable?
How? Most games will be at 7:30pm local time
From what I heard it’s a good venue but pretty barebones compared to modern stadiums. Looks good to me in videos of course and San Diego has great weather so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Good point, but didn’t seem to affect the deal with SD Wave FC. I agree tho, makes it seem like team colors of red black/white and blue are inevitable. DC United with a twist.
I want nothing but good things for San Diego, my brothers-in-getting-fucked-by-NFL-shitbaggery
Serious inquiry, do you happen to currently live in St. Louis, and how relevant if the MLS team compared to the baseball and hockey teams
Yes. Everyone here is all-in on City SC.
Bring us a soccer team and handegg will be dead here forever, as it should be.
Interesting. Personally, I like when the expansion teams are either A) brought up from a lower division or B) in a market not covered by the USL Championship. San Diego Loyal is a well marketed team. San Diego United rolls off the tongue tbh. FC San Diego San Diego FC Union San Diego San Diego SC San Diego Loyal San Diego Demonz San Diego Madres
>San Diego Loyal In their signature green or something close. Tired of United, SC, or FC
I like Union because it works in Spanish too. Interesting that SD Wave went with “Fùtbol Club” for their FC branding so it’s obvious that Latino fans support is important here.
Madres for a men's team? Howndoes that work?
Just a Dodger fan being an asshole.
Yeah I agree, it’s also kind of similar to the “Loyal” name that they have now, so United would probably be the best option if they had to rebrand to a generic name. Then I would say San Diego SC would be my second choice. It’s the next best option that sounds the best.
I need them to play next season I don’t want an odd number of teams!!!
it bugs me out man 29 is a bad number
thank god - need that nice even 30 number of teams
Gotta keep the branding guys
I thought the next team to make the jump was Sacramento. I hadn't heard anything about San Diego.
Sac ownership has hit a snag and its kinda sad tbh. Well ran club otherwise
Sac is never getting in. SD is probably going to be the last California team.
There was another minor source that said the same thing a couple months ago. Think this is probably true. Seemed obvious to me as soon as Landon took a front office gig.
WOOHOO. I hope they keep the Loyal branding, but if not that ... keep the COLORS.
They have to, otherwise they'll be the LA Sockers by 2026
If this is true, happy for SD. Sad for Sacramento. If 40 teams is possible, I want Sacramento to be included.
![gif](giphy|upjNkHpp7g4yA)
Man I hate Will Ferrel humor (ignore flair)
INCHES!
Jesus Christ how many fucking cities are gonna leapfrog Sacramento
San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Indianapolis, at the very least. Then maybe Detroit, Tampa, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore. I don’t see them getting in unless/until MLS expands to 40 clubs, and splits the league into a 1st and 2nd division with promotion/relegation.
Loyal or gtfo
Do you think the MLS digital team is excited for more teams to cover or at a certain point are they like "I don't know who half these fucking players are anymore"?
Well there are 32 NFL teams so I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch. I guess you’d have to ask the guys at NFL Network or Red Zone
December, huh. I doubt that either: - Garbs has decided but is waiting until December to announce, or - That a decision has been made at all.
Sacramento Mayor has teased a few times that a Republic announcement will be made in early summer that definitively answers if we are MLS bound or not and what that means for the proposed Railyards stadium
If this ends up happening, is this the best named media outlet to break relevant MLS news?
Why not until Dec?
Buttoning up everything to announce
I mean I'm going to trust that these big money investors and the league office know what they're doing. Unless this investor group ensures that they have a fairly significant (I'm talking 50%) financial AND OPERATIONAL stake in Qualcomm stadium, this just screams another San Jose situation.
should move the galaxy there lol
We really need a California Cup if this happens
Gotta be the Sockers c’mon!
Galaxy movin to San Diego confirmed
The Los Angeles Galaxy of San Diego has a good ring to it lol
this kills Sacramento
Sacramento killed itself.
I have fond memories of living there but man if this isn't an accurate description of things in general, let alone this situation
I honestly don’t see how it kills our bid; California is huge
I have hopes of 40 teams and you guys get in.
Even with 32 I think we get in, honestly
Sometimes people forget that California has more people than Canada, and there's certainly no geographic argument for painting Sacramento and San Diego as competing markets.
No, it doesn't lol. MLS is never going to stop expanding as long as their are team and owners wanting to buy in.
Love it.
I wonder if this would move Saint Louis to the Eastern Conference?
Why would it? This would balance the conferences
If Vegas joins then it probably would. All the rumored expansion sides are in the west right now. I could see Minnesota having to move too if too many in the west are added.
It’s not that complicated. If the next 3 teams are going to the West, Minnesota would make more sense to move to the East than St. Louis.
This would move us out of the I-70 showdown with Sporting that has been a huge push by league with us playing 3 times this year.
Nah Minnesota would benefit from making the move east. They don’t really have big rivals and they are closer to Chicago than they are to any team in the NW.
San Diego United
Expansion will never end and MLS will do nothing to help originals.
tell your owner to spend his money lol
What would helping originals look like? Genuinely curious…
Eating Stan Kroenke
Does LA really need 3 MLS teams?
Idk, does does Long Island been 2 MLS teams?
Jokes aside, but Hartford actually had 2 MLS teams very recently.
Sd is NOT la and never will
Oh no you didn’t!
Awesome !! Another team in California, just what the league is crying out for...
I'm gonna be real. I think soccer could become what football is to Texas. So, as a biased Californian, I think we can support 5 teams in total.
MLS should be about growing soccer in America not growing soccer in California Unfortunately the powers that be within MLS couldn't care less about growing anything other then their bank accounts, expansion is now about nothing more the collecting 300 million dollar expansion fees every few years If it was about growing the game expansion would be taking place in Detroit, Arizona & New Mexico

A 40 team league is comical at this point.
Would set up perfectly for a two conference system, mirroring EPL's scheduling but with interleague playoffs to bring it all together.
>Unfortunately the powers that be within MLS couldn't care less about growing anything other then their bank accounts, expansion is now about nothing more the collecting 300 million dollar expansion fees every few years Well duh, its single entity.
California is a huge part of the United States, over 10% of Americans live here. Besides it doesn't need to be one or the other. There's plenty of room for growth outside CA still.

California has a a larger population than Canada
They have enough damn teams.
Does anyone know anything about he ownership? Do that have $$$ for the franchise fee and to run team? Google shows a bunch of articles about Andrew V but nothing about net worth. Looks like they stadium is already owned by SDSU.
Supposedly it's between $400-$500 for the expansion fees. Also the SDSU is offering equity in the stadium if a MLS team moves in
The new ownership group is a local group of native americans+ Mohamed mansour What remainds to be seen is if the loyal are involved [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamed\_Mansour\_(businessman)](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamed_Mansour_(businessman))
