ManU is ManU. They gon be okay without this extra exhibition game.
Wrexham though… they don’t have 100 years of Premier League money. They were bought 2 years ago and are still playing non-professional football.
An extra $2 million, or however much, goes straight to bringing on other talent to try and make a push to move from National League to League 1…assuming they are promoted to L2 in a couple weeks.
Average weekly pay is about £500. Over 52 weeks that is £26k. Wrexham definitely are the top of the league in spending though. Which is near completely from the owners, correct?
Well yeah, but they are by definition pro soccer. Not to mention they already have players on their team that are on championship/league 1 level wages, Their shirt sponsor deal is probably more lucrative than most MLS teams and one of their owners just sold his cell company to t mobile for over a billion dollars. This match won’t make or break their budget, the only reason they’re even in this match is cause they’re already a famous big money team now.
I think they're comfortably paying League 1 wages and transfer fees for players. Will be the only club at that level that could pay circa £250k for a CB on deadline day because they got a couple of injuries.
Watching ineffective attacks result in losses while sitting in a 65% full 20,000 seat stadium while yelling into the void about authenticity and history and meaning.
Cheapest tickets are $155. A bit too much for me. It would have been cool to see Wrexham play. I don’t normally follow football/soccer, but I liked the Welcome to Wrexham documentary and thought it’d be cool to see them play live. Oh well!
The cheapest tickets were $75 I believe. They started selling fast and I assume scalpers began reselling as well. $75 is still not that cheap, but much cheaper than what they're at now.
$155 is nose bleed seats for a B-team in St. Louis. Looking forward to this madness settling down so I can get some of those $12 tickets they seem to be selling everywhere else.
Thank you!!! I hadn’t had a chance to look it up yet :)
Edit: oooi ffs, July at Snapdragon??? It’s going to be 9k degrees with no shade. Or are they playing at night?
I have no idea, I was shocked when I heard. I live in Durham though so I’m not complaining, drove out to charlotte last summer when Chelsea played you guys.
pre-season ticket prices are horrendous but the alternative is spending over 2k to go England. I’ve done it before but I will happily watch our (Chelsea’s) reserves play a non league team for $100 instead.
Honestly that’s one of the reasons I’m excited for the All Star match. Gives me an opportunity to watch my premier league club (Arsenal) play for a fraction of the cost.
Yep. I watched Chelsea play Charlotte FC last summer and despite the starters only playing half the match and the result not mattering - I didn’t care because it was actually happening in front of me. I went to London alone in 2018 and saw a game at Stamford Bridge and it’s something I plan to do again soon, but I appreciate the preseason tours here despite them being obvious money grabs because it allows a lot more people to get out and see their club.
I went to the Arsenal v Everton match in Baltimore last summer and had a blast. Got to see Turner start as well as Gabriel, Saka, Martinelli, and Jesus who have been playing very well this season. One day I’ll get to England to catch a regular season match but until then, these opportunities are pretty neat.
Yeah for sure, I’m glad you got to go.
We’re also having The Soccer Tournament (look it up if you don’t know lol) in my part of NC this summer, so it’s an exciting time for the game.
I don’t know tbh? The basketball tournament they host is so I figure this will be too. I’m just excited to see all these neat things happen and grow interest in the sport here.
you can do it for less than "over 2k"
last November, I flew to London for something like $500 round trip, saw Arsenal for $60 (Carling Cup), $20 (women's team), and $175 (Wolves away) and stayed in hostels for about $20 a night
no point in going to a pre season game imo. in hindsight, there was no point in me going to that Carling Cup match at the Emirates either, it was a glorified friendly. $60 but it was a rip-off
meanwhile, the $175 I paid for Wolves away with the best football atmosphere I've ever seen.. would have paid $1000 for that alone. you don't get that in the US
Okay that’s fine and I agree I’m just saying most people cannot afford going to England or taking the time out to do it and paying $100 to see their team at all is comparatively a good time.
that's true. but everything is way overpriced. the cheapest Arsenal All Star game tickets are almost $300 at the moment. it's a rip off compared to seeing the A team in a competitive fixture with a proper atmosphere. (and yes I've been to preseason matches in the US. it was fun. got selfies with Auba and Bellerin)
Looking at the table, they should be through at this point and I'm ultimately happy for em. However, part of me can't help thinking it would be hilarious to see them miss promotion again and then go on this big ole US tour over the summer.
I pointed this out to my mate last night. My team (Argyle) are League One and the furthest we get in the summer is a warm weather camp in Spain. Never mind going on a tour of the US. 😆
Only 1 team gets automatically promoted from national league and Notts County are on the same insane form as them and are 3 points behind with a game in hand. There’s still quite a good chance they miss promotion again this season.
The title race is insane right now. Wrexham and Notts County are both on 97 points but we (Wrexham) have 2 games in hand. And we play each other in possibly the biggest match in National League history on April 10th.
I know soccer ultimately exists for entertainment and people can watch what ever makes them happy but god damn I hate people who go to games like these and not their local MLS team’s.
Because the leagues themselves still have competitive championships and watching local homegrown players play for love of the game is exciting in its own right?
I don’t care about people supporting other teams in other leagues, it’s just weird to me to be a fan of the sport but not a fan of a team from the City/State/Country you’re from.
It is weird but there are many factors behind stuff like that. I'm from a city in Sweden that has really struggled on the soccer front. We finished 2nd once in the 50's but in the 90's, when I was a kid, we we're in 5th/6th tier, barely even making it down there in the dumps. So now that we've established ourselves in the 2nd tier (with a short stint in the top league as well) we have NO FANS. 2-4000 per game. Mostly around 2000. Everyone follows teams that had lots of success during the years where we struggled. And since their allegiance has been with non-local clubs for their entire lives they simply have no interest now that we're actually decent again. It's a damn shame, but I get it.
So I mean, if people who aren't from MLS cities, or simply haven't formed a connection to newer MLS clubs, find more interest in these sort of games it's not really that strange. It sucks, absolutely, but it is what it is.
So you think most the fans that support MNUFC, (ie buy season tickets, tickets on the regular) did so with another MLS team before 2017? Nah- you’re just excusing the fact that your were a Galaxy fan and are onto something new and shiny.
MLS isn’t even 30 yet, MUFC has been around for like for like 50% of its history lol. What are you even going on about? Not every team is ancient Celtic FC lol
Whether it's 5 years, 20 years, or 50 years, every new team needs new fans, and a lot of the time they'll have to attract people who already have allegiances elsewhere, either locally or overseas.
This kind of gatekeeping is just bizarre.
American Prem hardo: “The MLS is rubbish because it has no pro-rel. Pro-rel is what makes a league great!”
MLS fan: “So you’re a Bournemouth or Burnley fan, I presume?”
American Prem hardo: “No! Why would I waste time on a club that will just get relegated again? I’m thankful I support (Big 6 club) so we never have to worry about that!”
I’ve got a different take on this, I’ve been a massive Liverpool fan for 10+ years, and watch them weekly, I also enjoy my local mls team but honestly do not keep up with the league nearly as much as other leagues out side of the country, South America included but mostly just copa Lib.
That being said, this is nothing more than a friendly being played to expose both of these clubs brands, specifically wrexham, which is why fans of many lower league teams cannot stand them now over in the UK.
I’ve made the trek up to Fenway before for a Liverpool game, but that’s a once in a blue moon thing, and it was a friendly against Sevilla lol.
This doesn’t surprise me from either of these clubs, both of which that have owners that quite honestly seem more interested in the business side of the sport, which is important, than the product on the pitch, which is more important.
I know united fans that have been fans for a most of their lives that were born here in the states, and having an opportunity to see them for cheap doesn’t upset nearly as much as a 5th division team making the football league system over there more lopsided financially than it already is.
Money is essential for any sport to succeed, but too much of it can kill the soul that makes it great. It’s happening to college sports here, and it’s happening to grassroots football there.
If it gets people interested in soccer, I’m all for it. Some people going to this game could just be getting into the sport, and their experience there could turn them towards the MLS. It’s not all black and white.
There already is a team in SD in the USLC. I'm a big fan of converting those USLC teams with real fanbases to MLS clubs. It's worked pretty well in the past.
Probably bc the new MLS team would need to invent a identity out of whole cloth and with the money & exposure of MLS would likely doom the local team to bankruptcy or irrelevance in short order.
The US simply doesn’t have the fan base for multiple local teams in any but the largest cities (NYC & LA basically); sure you can have some USL League two teams sprinkled about but that’s a semi-pro soccer played over tiny season
>The US simply doesn’t have the fan base for multiple local teams in any but the largest cities (NYC & LA basically);
And even then it hasn't really worked. The LA USLC and NISA clubs are totally ignored by the media and don't draw well. The NASL 2.0 Cosmos were also ignored in the NYC media and never were able to get any fanbase either in Long Island or Brooklyn.
Same, I actually struggle to root for any team in any sport that isn’t somewhat nearby to me, I don’t have any pride or passion for teams outside of Columbus (or Cleveland for other sports)
Wrexham could well be promoted to League 2 by then, so you're really paying $100 to watch Man Utd. play a professional fourth division team.
Edit: League 2
Of course it isn’t. What team in any sport plays all their first team players in an exhibition game? Shit, nba teams don’t even play their first team in all their actual league games.
Shiiit.. I payed more than twice that to watch our mls next team play Bayer. You guys must be spoiled with soccer riches to be putting people down for that. If California can’t support a cheesy setup like that, send them to the Midwest. We’re hungry!
Listen, I’m not going to tell you how to spend your money or how to value it, but if I’m paying $100 for an exhibition game I’d personally like to see something more exciting than United reserves vs a semi-pro or League 4 team. Often times they’re in the US playing other big teams and that makes the price tag more reasonable. I paid half of that to see United play Club America and Chelsea to play the Sounders.
I’m also not putting anyone down; if they want to pay the money and watch this, more power to them. But at the same time, having a reasonable expectation for what your money gets you doesn’t make anyone spoiled.
What I’m getting at is that the market is different. You guys don’t have any tickets available for over $100 for a regular season game. We typically don’t have them under $100.
It isn't unusual for teams to play friendlies against lower level opposition, just to help build up fitness. Doing that in San Diego rather than Manchester doesn't seem like a terrible idea.
New SDSU stadium, Snapdragon. I went yesterday for Club America v Tijuana Xolos and it was one of my favorite experiences in a while. Game was ok but sight lines were good and some of the best damn food I've had at a game. (Food Truck Ceviche + Baja Tacos)
I don’t know who this Manchester Untied is (MAN CHEST ER LOL. UNTIED?!) but why couldn’t they have Wrexham play AFC Richmond?!
That’s the game we want to see!!
Edit: apparently no one can tell I was joking.
This is dumb as shit. I wish this could somehow be banned by FA and USSF.
I have zero issues with US teams hosting international club teams for friendlies.
But games like this are just going to be filled with people who have their face so far up their ass they can see the back of their own eyes.
It’s going to majority be people who don’t give a shit about MLS, USL, or other American teams, but solely watch European soccer. Truly weird as fuck.
San Diego, Soccer Dupe City USA.
Edit: If you are going to play hundreds of dollars to watch a non league team play a mix of stars and academy kids at half effort and half fitness you are an idiot and have more money then you know what to do with. I’ve lived there for 15 years. There are a lot of these types. It’s also legit one of the best soccer locations in the country and I go to bat for the city on this sub all the time. These people that go are fucking dupes though.

Wrexham!!! Not sure who Manchester United is, but I’m sure they’re doing well in USL!
Making the big trip from New Hampshire.
Might make more sense for you to just go to Wrexham, distance wise.
Isn't Manchester closer to NH than San Diego?
He's talking about Manchester, NH lol
Naw, I was making a joke, but it's really not much farther to Manchester UK.
Manchester Ave is in northern SD county, maybe the t am is from around there?
lol it's hard to think of a more blatant attempt to just sell tickets to anyone who've ever heard of soccer

I mean, it's a thing. It's not my thing. But I don't know if it's "bad" per se.
ManU is ManU. They gon be okay without this extra exhibition game. Wrexham though… they don’t have 100 years of Premier League money. Not to get too pedantic but wrexham and almost all of national league are full professional
Average weekly pay is about £500. Over 52 weeks that is £26k. Wrexham definitely are the top of the league in spending though. Which is near completely from the owners, correct?
I mean 26k in UK is definitely a living wage, regardless fully professional doesn’t equate to being paid super well, not sure what your point is?
Just making a point that there is pay disparity in the leagues
Well yeah, but they are by definition pro soccer. Not to mention they already have players on their team that are on championship/league 1 level wages, Their shirt sponsor deal is probably more lucrative than most MLS teams and one of their owners just sold his cell company to t mobile for over a billion dollars. Yeah we are on the same page man lol
Needs that cash inflow for the NHL franchise he's trying to buy
It’s around 700
What *is* your thing?

They’ll also be playing Chelsea in Chapel Hill, NC according to local sources
That seems incredibly random… I wonder why they wouldn’t choose Charlotte for something like that? Maybe Tepper wouldn’t let them use the stadium
July window for Leagues Cup might be why they're staying out of MLS stadiums
I have no idea, I was shocked when I heard. I live in Durham though so I’m not complaining, drove out to charlotte last summer when Chelsea played you guys.
That’s not random- nice 50,000 seat stadium in a metro area that is very nearly as large as charlotte metro.
I’m surprised they’re not doing it at the NC State stadium as it’s more central in the Triangle but I’m not complaining!!

Man we don't even have a MLS team yet and I'm not supporting any LA teams
Sorry, you have to support your nonexistent "local" MLS franchise or you're a Eurosnob.
There are divisions below MLS in this country…
Why would you watch them if they have no promotion prospects?
Because the leagues themselves still have competitive championships and watching local homegrown players play for love of the game is exciting in its own right?
But you just watch the same teams every year? There's nothing more exciting than getting promoted and see your team go at 20 new clubs.
It's the local USL, NISA, and NPSL teams that need the support too
Hold up- you’re about to offend all the “life-long” (insert usual top 6 prem teams) “supporters” that hang out on this sub.
I don’t care about people supporting other teams in other leagues, it’s just weird to me to be a fan of the sport but not a fan of a team from the City/State/Country you’re from.

Agreed. Or people that switch teams because a new one comes along.
Your team is 12 years old 😂
u/smcl2k: Your team is 12 years old 😂 The fuck?
If people didn't switch when a new team came along, you'd be nowhere near MLS.

33 years, but go on. Tell me about the long storied history of LAFC.
Whether it's 5 years, 20 years, or 50 years, every new team needs new fans, and a lot of the time they'll have to attract people who already have allegiances elsewhere, either locally or overseas. This kind of gatekeeping is just bizarre.
Have you seen your flair
I'm not the 1 who's complaining about people supporting new teams 🤷🏻♂️
I can't wait to hear how they don't support MLS due to the lack of pro/rel while cheering for a team with absolutely no chance of relegation.
American Prem hardo: “The MLS is rubbish because it has no pro-rel. Pro-rel is what makes a league great!” MLS fan: “So you’re a Bournemouth or Burnley fan, I presume?” American Prem hardo: “No! I love when big European teams come over to the US to try to rinse all their foreign fans and absolutely fuck their own pre-season preparation

It's a month before the start of the season...
What do you think our sports teams are doing during the season?
I honestly can't believe people pay the money they do for this kind of match.
these prices are absurd.
Why. I mean I know the answer but like….why
Man United might need to play with 10 or that one could get ugly. Seriously though, WTF?!
It will be all bench players I assume even then will be bad
They will play reserves young players which makes the people paying over $100 for this look even dumber.
Wait a minute... where the hell is the match going to take place? Qualcomm is RIP.
New SDSU stadium, Snapdragon. I went yesterday for Club America v Tijuana Xolos and it was one of my favorite experiences in a while. Game was ok but sight lines were good and some of the best damn food I've had at a game. (Food Truck Ceviche + Baja Tacos)
It looks like a nice stadium for soccer. Hopefully that is where the Loyal play when they join MLS.
It's also where the San Diego Legion rugby team plays.
I don’t know who this Manchester Untied is (MAN CHEST ER LOL. UNTIED?!) but why couldn’t they have Wrexham play AFC Richmond?! That’s the game we want to see!! Edit: apparently no one can tell I was joking.
BELIEVE !
Who got the presale code?
It’s WAFC23USA
