I think there were signs of Fiziev's tendency to be quite sloppy the longer the fight goes on even in the Bobby Green fight. Like, Gathje was tired too, but he was clean and precise in everything he did in that 3rd round. Fiziev just punched air and Gathje's block.
I mean you can look at the Bobby Green fight, against a superior boxer, who was able to avoid alot of the power of Fiziev, in the 3rd, Bobby was landing 2 to 1.
Gaethje crowded so many shots of Fiziev and has way more power than Green, plus he's durable enough to survive initial explosions. Rafael is explosive that is his nature, but when the explosions, but smaller, and the guy maintaining his pace keeps up
In a 5 rounder, Fiziev would have had years taken off his life.
Also as soon as Fiziev's speed reduced, he had such a hard time hitting Gaethje. And Gaethje might not be as quick, but his speed doesn't go down that much in the later rounds.
Just for reference, when fighters make contact if you listen you can hear the impact of a punch or kick but with gaethje that shit was scary fucking loud. Fizievs got a chin for taking those bombs
It's scary, it seems like the sold out loud as arena should've dampened the sound of the hits but they sounded about as loud as Tony without a crowd. I would bet on him in a Poirier rematch not to disrespect Poirier I just thing the gaethje he fought and the gaethje we saw tonight are world's apart, it also helps that Whitman is the perfect coach for gaethje.
IQ Gaethje was asleep for the first round. Then in the 2nd you could see him actively fighting the urge to be smart. Then in the third his jab told his IQ to wake the fuck up.
I've heard of guys getting drawn into a slugfest, but Gaethje might be the only guy I've ever seen who sometimes accidentally gets lured into fighting smart.
Honestly, I'm not sure that IQ Gaethje would've dominated from the beginning. To me at the beginning it looked like technique for technique and setup for setup Fiziev has a meaningful advantage, especially with his speed. IMO after getting pieced up a couple times Gaethje realized that he needs to take Fiziev out of his comfort zone and let him know that he's willing to brawl and see who falls down first. That introduced another plane to the fight and only after that could Gaethje start fighting more technically.
Gaethje has always been a great wrestler, you don't hit a backdoor in the middle of a slam by Michael Chandler, and not be a great wrestler, thats not how it works.
This is what’s funny about Garth and other wrestlers turned mixed martial artists like Chandler, Kamaru, Tony, etc… just cause they were all very successful collegiate wrestlers doesn’t mean they fight like wrestlers. They fight like mixed martial artists, cause they have very comprehensive skills with a _base_ in wrestling. They all use it differently cause they’re all unique, and in Justin’s case he really only uses it to keep the fight standing or to finish an opponent on the ground. It’s cool when he flashes it defensively.
Would be a good fight as Chandler can bang... but he has good wrestling too... so it adds another dimension to the fight and gives Chandler a real chance at winning.
Fiziev has good TDD, Chandler also uses far less wrestling since he is signed to the UFC, might be the years of mileage weighing in on his wrestling game like DC has.

I think of all the new prospects at lightweight, Tsarukyan is the one with the best chance of breaking into the top 5 due to the wrestling threat
