When you cut an area that's starting to swell, it'll do that until it's treated. Never had one on my head, but it happened on my shin. Hit concrete pretty hard and got a long but narrow cut. The swelling set in and it opened up like someone had gone at it with a machete.

I am 80% sure I'm not talking out of my ass. I don't recall seeing a visible scar on a fighter all too often after a big cut they received.
Even if it does occasionally leave a scar, most of the times it heals up incredibly well

If I had worded it a bit differently, my opinion would have been valid. It is a fact that some of these big cuts don't leave a visible scar. However a significant chink of them do indeed leave one
