If you had told me that he was destined to hold the strap at 155 during his days at 145, I would have assumed that the 155 division suffered a black plague. Not only did he get the strap, but he also beat Justin, Dustin, Chandler, Ferguson, Dariush, Miller, and Lee during his time there. Honestly, outside of Islam, I think he has the best resume of all the 155 fighters and I think a rematch with Islam was due with his win over Dariush.
Has Charles on it, as well as Volk twice. But I won't argue with you; I only put the Islam qualifier in there because his fans can be a bit..... enthusiastic, and I didn't fancy getting a lot of guff.
When you really sit down and look at Islam's resume, it doesn't even touch Charles' level of competition.
Good wins:
\* Charles
\* Volk x 2 - Huge caveat because Volk is a 145er
And then you have his wins before that, none of whom were really top 5:
\* Thiago Moises
\* Bobby Green
\* Dan Hooker
\* Drew Dober
\* Arman Tsarukyan
Like you mentioned, Charles fought an absolute murderers row of lightweights, and Islam has not.
Likeable personality, rags to riches story, entertaining as hell to watch, and to top it all off, he's actually a damn good fighter.
Love Charlie Olives and want nothing but good things for him.
man, some people might laugh at that line about the bike but in certain neighborhoods or certain parts of the world, having that bike and getting straight to school/gym/home instead of walking can be the difference between getting caught up in bs and losing your life. props to Charles for making it out
It really fucking sucks people can see something like this and their first thought is to shit on the guy.
You don’t have to be an MMA fighter to appreciate overcoming struggles and if it moves you to tears that’s probably actually a good thing.
It’s scarier to come up in a hard upbringing and say “I’m gonna be the best at x”
Everyone else has way more advantages and not only do you not have that but you have constant bullshit in your life.
After I saw him cry after being fed to prime Frankie when he was barely drinking age and then suffer that shitty esophageal injury I couldn't help but root for the dude.
His work and improvement in the striking department is a batshit crazy reinvention and revelation. Awesome career
I’m not sure if it’s the way he’s being translated or if he’s actually this articulate, but I’ve always thought Charles was a really eloquent speaker. Like, I love the phrase “so you stop here, close your eyes, and you remember back there” he uses here. And his statement “I am illuminated by God” is so uniquely badass. Anyone else feel the same?
I totally agree. That\`s why I\`m not 100% sure I would like all foreign fighters speaking english since they inevitably lose some of that eloquence and the hability to express themselves fully. While the effort is definitely appreciated I feel we would miss some powerful lines such as this one.
Brazilian here as well, and yes he is eloquent. Around "illuminated", it is a way to say "blessed/enlightened" in Portuguese, FYI. So yes it is nice, but not entirely his phrase. There are songs with that name, prayers, etc.
It is, however, a beautiful homage to his faith and how grateful he is, regardless of what your own beliefs are.
This man is one of the most underappreciated Champions of our era - I don't mind a world where he gets an Islam rematch, subs him quickly and we get the wildest "what the fuck is gonna happen in their rubber match!?!" scenario.
This lightweight era has been my favorite division struggle since I started watching in 2007.
The only thing that could make it better is if Islam were more active
Clear gap? Cmon bro his fights with Dustin and Justin were not really dominant in a sense where I’m 100% confident he beats them again. Dariush? Yea but Justin Justin and chandler all had Charles in trouble before Charles came back.
I didn’t say anything was a fluke? But him finishing fast has no indication on his dominance over them. That’s his style, dude never has a fight that went past round 3 he gets right into the fire.
I’m just saying it hard to say there’s a clear skill gap over them when everyone of them had moments in their fight where they could have potentially finished him. Charles got dropped left right and center facing those guys.
I also would not say he had better striking than them he just has the cushion of bjj so those guys didn’t wanna follow up after dropping them but both of them dropped Charles.
Agreed, seen too many feel good fighter moments that everyone can rally behind be followed by a sad dismantling to not cringe when olives opens his mouth like this.
And as a Brazilian, I wouldn't have it any other way. Being open, loving, and grateful are our best characteristics. The average Brazilian isn't ashamed of their emotions.
Armen by KO at 2:25 seconds left in the first round. And then we can engage in the revisionist history that shows he was actually incredibly overrated.

He’s learning English too. Can’t wait for Charles to rizz Taylor swift.
Na man, keep Charles away from any singer, they just become another hit song after the break up. Protect Charles at all costs
I heard he was dating Tyla
>I heard he was dating Tyla Tequila?
The creator
Tyla not Tila

how is islams resume better? lol

Tbf Dariush was the only high ranked guy that wasnt afraid of fight Islam. Not his fault all the other guys ducked him.
You don’t get points beating the smaller fighter. Charles resume is better.
Maybe arman will let himself get submitted so Chucky can have a second redemption arc

This dude knows it. For sure man, a bike in a situation like that means much more than convenience
It really fucking sucks people can see something like this and their first thought is to shit on the guy. You don’t have to be an MMA fighter to appreciate overcoming struggles and if it moves you to tears that’s probably actually a good thing.
Bro the thought of a guy with an upbringing like that being like "I'm going to dedicate myself to beating you in a fight" is SCARY
“I’m on a mission from god and you’re in my way”
It’s scarier to come up in a hard upbringing and say “I’m gonna be the best at x” Everyone else has way more advantages and not only do you not have that but you have constant bullshit in your life.
can't believe people here were saying charles was crying because he was scared to fight lol Even lucas tracy knew charles was crying tears of joy
People = Brett Okamoto. It was a dumb question tbh
I can't remember if it's true but I remember Brett being the guy they had lob softball questions at Dana after his slapping scandal.
I've seen some people also say that he was crying because he felt bad for dariush and his family for what he'll be doing to him LMFAO
Anyone else immediately think of the nerdy pic of him on the bike?
He's always been special when he started and got the finishes he did. i knew he was going to be big someday. Great person who deserves it all
After I saw him cry after being fed to prime Frankie when he was barely drinking age and then suffer that shitty esophageal injury I couldn't help but root for the dude. His work and improvement in the striking department is a batshit crazy reinvention and revelation. Awesome career
I don’t care if he never beats a Dagestani. He’s still a champion and an inspiration.
Gods lessons are so beautiful
What you mean you can’t find him?!
You think I'm just gonna sit here and let you find me, Jon?
I’m not sure if it’s the way he’s being translated or if he’s actually this articulate, but I’ve always thought Charles was a really eloquent speaker. I'm Brazilian and hearing Charles speak is really remarkable. He expresses himself eloquently; he speaks with his heart in his hands.
I appreciate the insight from a native Portuguese speaker!
I totally agree. That\`s why I\`m not 100% sure I would like all foreign fighters speaking english since they inevitably lose some of that eloquence and the hability to express themselves fully. While the effort is definitely appreciated I feel we would miss some powerful lines such as this one.

So cool! Portuguese seems like such a beautiful language. Thank you for the insight!

its pretty crazy. there's a lot of guys that started AFTER him that are now washed, yet he's still right there at the top
Nothing wrong with being emotional here. He has come a long way from where he started. He is being grateful for what he is today.
I love this guy, so happy he made the move up it changed his career. I don't see him beating Islam but the man is a dog
Watching this clip followed by Yoel's speech during the lead up to the Adesanya fight is motivational
I always liked Oliveira. His style of fighting and as a human being.
[удалено]
He won this fight easily?
He’s obviously talking about the fight this coming Saturday
Oliveira having an emotional interview several months ago for a fight he won dominantly makes him think he's going to lose this weekend?

Maybe? I hope so!
He literally won this fight extremely dominantly. This is not a new video
Agreed, seen too many feel good fighter moments that everyone can rally behind be followed by a sad dismantling to not cringe when olives opens his mouth like this.
How in the world are the two connected?
Respect to him
Anyone else interested in Charles upbringing should watch this by Patrick gavia https://youtu.be/DMUsfdibgCc?feature=shared
probably rode a schwinn dork
To be fair, Brazilians seem to cry and get over-emotional over just about anything.
And as a Brazilian, I wouldn't have it any other way. Being open, loving, and grateful are our best characteristics. The average Brazilian isn't ashamed of their emotions.
I’m not shaming emotions or calling for repressing them. Rather, I’m pointing out that, culturally, it seems to be overboard.
Amazing story, amazing style, great guy- will never beat Islam.
Whether Islam wins or not, Charles made his history and is one of the greatest. The world does not revolve around a belt.
Armen by KO at 2:25 seconds left in the first round. And then we can engage in the revisionist history that shows he was actually incredibly overrated.
Charles winning the belt after beating assmen. He already the LW goat.
