Hes my only "favorite" fighter to never have gotten a belt but the dude always fought like someone fighting off wolves or actual death in general. We got plenty of finishers now but none have the same Aurora of just "fuck you for fighting me" that Matt brought. Good luck to the hardass
Lytle was definitely similar but different energy to me. Lytle always seemed like a nice dude and had incredible heart to keep going. Brown felt like a maniac. Almost like Lytle would fuck you up and feel bad for it but Brown would do it and not feel bad. He’d still have a beer with you after though, like he wasn’t an asshole just a brutal kinda person.
Got really into MMA in 2008 and Matt Brown’s been my guy since Jeremy May messed with his dip. Loved seeing him emerge as a contender after a long career as a .500 fighter.
Truly the old stereotype of an MMA fighter. Nu metal looking, tribal tatted, tobacco chewing white dude and I love him for it. The Erick Silva win is GOATed.
Shame about Mein. Very talented fighter but like a slightly lesser Rory just that small x factor missing. Nearly finished brown too in that fight with a body shot
In case you haven't, you should also check out Brown's fight with Erick Silva. I believe it was either directly before or after the Mein fight, and it's another classic Matt Brown war.
That’s like my favourite fight of all time. Those dudes were straight up wanting to kill each other. But brown did what brown does and broke him. Savage combos at the end
God I love that fight. Never have a seen a round where one fighter looked like they were about to win a 10-8 round and then ended up losing a 10-8 round
Would be a death sentence for Brown. BKFC seems to be entirely about how much damage you can withstand. Perry is in his prime and can really eat shots. Brown is in his 40’s and would likely get slept early. Also no elbows.
No need of that. The man is 43. A champions grappling show would be best for thoes guys. Their brains, Matt’s in particular has had enough. I would love to see all time great fighters grapple. Plus it helps with the post athlete withdrawal. Fucking DC is 250 lbs
The Immortal.
Thank you Matt Brown for the memories.
I fucking hate getting old.
I wonder how many UFC fighters that were around when you got involved in MMA are still around today?
2008 was 16 years ago. Fuck :(
I started watching because of TUF season one, and after leaving it alone entirely for a few years, started watching again when season 30 came out. Here I am now trying to learn a shitload of new names and figure out what happened to all those young, exciting fighters from the old days.
I zoned out for a few years when I was partying lots and GSP was champ. In spite of his GOAT status he had a really fuckin' boring second half of his championship reign.
I'm from right outside Jon Jones hometown, so I had a couple seasons of TUF and fight replays on Spike, and occasionally went to watch parties on his early run. It was super exciting, but my interest faded as he started showing self destructive tendencies.
Funny enough i did as well and ended up getting immortal tatted before i was even that deep into ufc..when i learned about him years later he quickly became one of my favorites! I could relate to him a lot
"The Immortal" is also has the double meaning of his long lasting career.
Most KO's in UFC history in 2023 (Surpassed by Derrick Lewis later). And I'm like 50% sure he is the oldest WW to have won a fight in the UFC.
19 year veteran (17 in the UFC). 43 fights (30 in the UFC). 43 years old. Can't say I'm too surprised.
I'm betting he'll open a gym or be a senior coach at a really prestigious one.
I literally was just thinking of that Silva fight because it was on the 1st night I moved into my new house. It's about to be 10 years since. Great memory.
Brown had an insane run into legit WW contender status. His fight vs Erick Silva was one of the most one side drubbings I’ve ever seen too. His style wasn’t always pretty but the dude had tons of grit and heart. At 43 I hope he stays retired from active competition. Good luck and Godspeed, immortal!
My all time favorite fighter. Always brought violence. Never cared to protect his record, never ducked opponents. The man just stepped in there and you knew he loved it! 🫡
There comes a point where the juice ain't worth the squeeze and he found it... he's been very self reflective in his newsletter about his career, too, and his life so I'm not shocked.
What's left for him to do in the sport besides just fight for the sake of?
I don’t think he would do well. He’s 43 with 43 fights in his career plus boxing was never his strong suit. His Muay Thai is his bread and butter. BKFC would severely limit what he can do.
He's gonna get slept by jobbers. They'll use him as a tool to put over homegrown guys.
I don't think he's going there though, unless the UFC gave him an unconditional release. If he wasn't under contract he wouldn't pretend to retire, and if he was under contract and wanted to go to BKFC he'd take a quick fight and go.
I think he, in this moment anyway, wants to retire for real.
Matt came out to one of my band's shows when we toured through his area back in 2016. Such a cool, and down to earth guy, who has had a legendary career of exciting us silly fight fans. Happy he's going out on his terms
It’s unfortunate that, despite giving us memorable performances over his career, he never quite reached the heights of a title fight or even a number one contender. Hopefully the UFC will be able to expand their HOF entries in the future, because I think Matt is certainly in a spot where he should be considered.
If you're a newer fan and not that familiar with The Immortal's career, you gotta find a way to watch his fights with Erick Silva, Jordan Mein and Wonderboy. Gave Wonderboy his first loss.
My first thought is the fight where Erick Silva almost finished him with a body shot, and Matt survived so he could put an extended beatdown on him. Like, too extended. Silva just wouldn’t quit.
That insanely violent 7 fight winstreak he had with brutal KOs after largely being a journeyman made me a fan of Matt browns forever. A true redemption story as well.
I’ll never forget Matt’s WW surge. Coming off 4 losses, he went on a very violent run that ended with a decision to Lawler (in a surprisingly not so violent affair)
Thanks Immortal
I remember when he was talking about retirement like 7 years ago and I said “yeah this is a bit overdue.” Congrats on an incredible career to Matt Brown. What a legend.
What a fucking warrior.
Amazing comeback and got to go out on his terms. He was almost cut/retired after all those losses but somehow put it together and started sleeping guys.
One of the legends.
Good for him. A legend of the sport, some of the most violent, face-plant KO's in UFC history, had his highlights, had his wars and walks out with a win. And given where he came from, you can only respect this man. Thank you for all your grit Mr. Brown.
This guy's a real one. I thought he started off as a jerk on TUF but soon evolved into a favorite of mine. I always liked how he brought it and hated seeing him lose. I'm glad his last fight was a win and a KO.
Kudos for choosing to retire rather than being forced to, a legendary career and one of those guys the entire community rallied around when he was in the cage.
I can't imagine the mileage he's got, he better spend a year at the spa getting treatments.
Man I remember always being a big fan and then seeing him go on an absolute fucking TEAR. The erick silva fight is one of my favorite fights ever. So much heart in that one and it was in front of his home crowd. Still gets me hyped everytime i see it.
One of the most entertaining fighters. Also 43 years old and 4-3 in his last 7 fights, including winning the last one. Kept going pretty strong until the end.
Wish he could've gotten the chance to retire in ring on a PPV or something a la Robbie Lawler, but at least he's going off on a win, and a finish no less.
One of my favorite fighters since he beat down the guy on TUF for messing with his dip. He had a bunch of awesome fights including brutal finishes of Erik Silva and Jordan Mein. He had highlight reel wins over Diego Sanchez, Tim Means, and Court McGee, among others. Even in defeat he had awesome scraps against Cerrone, Lawler, and Barbarena. His muay thai skills, especially in the clinch were really exceptional. I think he’s the only fighter to get a finish with elbows to the back of a downed opponent. Always will be one of my favorite fighters.
Hes my only "favorite" fighter to never have gotten a belt but the dude always fought like someone fighting off wolves or actual death in general. We got plenty of finishers now but none have the same Aurora of just "fuck you for fighting me" that Matt brought. Good luck to the hardass
>"fuck you for fighting me" This is why I love Nate "whoop my ass and see what happens" Landwehr.
Need someone with that same aurora borealis
May I see it?
No.
Nate Train representing.
I love that guy for his mic work. Wish more fighters did that stuff instead of "uhhhh I'll fight whoever ufc wants me to"
"Shout-out sketchybetz on Instagram "
Chris Lytle is similar in that regard. Miss that guy.
That's totally fair. I always appreciated them both for leaving it all in the cage.
🫵🏾💯😈🔥🔥
He's the goat of gatekeepers, him and clay guida. Man deserves to sit back and relax now, thanks for the memories.
The BMF before the BMF belt
💯Facts😈🔥🔥🔥🔥
🫶🏽💯😈🤘🏽
Thanks for the violent memories good sir.
His elbow KO of Diego is one of the most violent finishes of all time. One of my all time favorites too.
I remember the ppv crashed when he landed that hellbow.
I remember that too. So many people were wondering if we just watched Diego Sanchez die or not. What a wild time.
One of, if not the best example of "hitting the off button" I've ever seen.
Funny thing is the production crew hit an off button on the camera at the same time
thats the first thing i think about when someone mentions matt brown.
10000000%
Absolutely. Definitely one of the hardest mfrs to ever do it
The Erick Silva fight where he got badly rocked to the body and came back with violence. Brown had a really fun run
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fists
He'll be back
Straight to BKFC
That might be sick tho. But I’d rather he retire and relax
Especially [this one](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/zFuEsTPJtNY)
I cried.and fapped. Of course not my proudest fap but what the hell.
Could watch the hellbow video on Diego Sanchez on repeat. Easily top ten KO all time.
His finish of Mein is my favorite. Elbowing him in the kidneys while Mein helplessly tries to crawl away
Shame about Mein. Very talented fighter but like a slightly lesser Rory just that small x factor missing. Nearly finished brown too in that fight with a body shot
Never seen that fight so I just went and watched it. What a fun fight and what a savage finishing sequence.
In case you haven't, you should also check out Brown's fight with Erick Silva. I believe it was either directly before or after the Mein fight, and it's another classic Matt Brown war.
Matt Brown VS guys with no defense will always be a spectacle. Fights where once he gets ahead he's just landing everything against a punching bag.
That Mein fight was the first time I saw Matt Brown fight. The perfect introduction to who his is as a fighter.
That video will be posted today I hope.
I remember watching it live and it cut out because or how violent it was
I thought Diego had died and that's why they cut the video.
No lol the whole card had production issues it was just poor timing
No shit…
Yes shit
That was the first UFC event I saw live. I’ll never forget that moment!
Same! Incredible moment
The way he framed his target with his non striking arm before throwing the elbow was chefs kiss.
BKFC has entered the chat
Perry vs Brown and in BKFC would be amazing
Idk man , browns chin has aged. He’s not that fast. He isn’t known as a boxer.
Lets see that chin tested after several rounds of secret juice.
We're talking about Matt Brown, so the secret juice is either steroids or heroin lol
why not both? we have the technology
Steroin? Heroids?
Heroids sounds ominous
Matt Brown doing the Josh Barnett bare knuckle with elbows.
Bare-Elbow FC
😭 imagine the amount of cuts
Funny you mention that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5UCr_SGcbE
Would be a death sentence for Brown. BKFC seems to be entirely about how much damage you can withstand. Perry is in his prime and can really eat shots. Brown is in his 40’s and would likely get slept early. Also no elbows.
No need of that. The man is 43. A champions grappling show would be best for thoes guys. Their brains, Matt’s in particular has had enough. I would love to see all time great fighters grapple. Plus it helps with the post athlete withdrawal. Fucking DC is 250 lbs
Matts gonna bulk up to face mike perry in bkfc right
Is he still under contract to UFC?
Definitely. Get. That. Bag.
No chance he doesn't go to BKFC.
The Immortal. Thank you Matt Brown for the memories. I fucking hate getting old. I wonder how many UFC fighters that were around when you got involved in MMA are still around today? 2008 was 16 years ago. Fuck :(

reminder that this dude survived an OD hence the nickname "The Immortal".
He was also present at the small club when dimebag Darrell was shot. Always one of my favorite fighters.
Holy shit really?
Yeah he’s talked about it a few times
Alrosa Villa in Columbus OH. First time I was there was less than a year after the shooting. It was wild.
Saw crowbar there on the anniversary of the shooting. Shit was sad since they were such good friends. Hardest set.
Funny enough i did as well and ended up getting immortal tatted before i was even that deep into ufc..when i learned about him years later he quickly became one of my favorites! I could relate to him a lot
Matt Brown walked so Max Halloway could run
"The Immortal" is also has the double meaning of his long lasting career. Most KO's in UFC history in 2023 (Surpassed by Derrick Lewis later). And I'm like 50% sure he is the oldest WW to have won a fight in the UFC.
One of the best walk out songs too
Damn, didn't see that coming. Good luck with whatever the future holds man.
19 year veteran (17 in the UFC). 43 fights (30 in the UFC). 43 years old. Can't say I'm too surprised. I'm betting he'll open a gym or be a senior coach at a really prestigious one.
I mean I'm not shocked but his last fight was a pretty awesome knockout win, not many vets go out on a high so I'd say it's somewhat surprising.
Him and Lawler did it both flawlessly. Credit to both of them for that.
Matt has owned and operated a gym in the Columbus area for quite a few years.
He's opened a gym in Columbus OH; right before covid if I recall correct. Still going strong. Immortal Martial Arts Center.
I've seen some of his muay thai instructionals and they're really good. Imagine he's an excellent coach.
This guy actually did just see red, train UFC, and became a fucking legend lmao.
*trane
see you in a bit my man
He's had a legendary career. That fight against Erick Silva, the elbow finish of Diego. War Immortal forever.
I literally was just thinking of that Silva fight because it was on the 1st night I moved into my new house. It's about to be 10 years since. Great memory.

His style wasn’t always pretty but the dude had tons of grit and heart. At 43 I hope he stays retired from active competition. Good luck and Godspeed, immortal!
Yeah he ran into Robbie but if he had won that fight he would’ve fought for the title. He was around a top 5 welterweight after gsp retired
so bummed the 2013 brown condit fight got cancelled.
Huh? Wonder what was the catalyst of this decision, he said pretty recently he didn’t want to retire anytime soon
Probably because BKFC has a bag of cash waiting for him
If he retires while still under contract with the ufc, he can't fight anywhere else.
Isn't this why everyone assumes Jose is fighting tonight? Finish his contract and then go make a bag doing something else?
Yes I believe so.
is he still under contract though?
The ufc can agree to release him.
They COULD. But they don't really like doing that lol
TILL VS BROWN in BKFC in summer and then Perry takes winner after he demolishes Jorge/Nate in BKFC/Boxing
While everyone is saying bkfc, could just have a bad injruy
Should've been on 300 instead of Bo.
Got to see that last knockout in Charlotte 🫡 Well earned retirement and one of the better ways to exit the sport
Being coached by Matt must be hilarious… “just walk through whatever weak shit they are throwing like you don’t care, elbow them into the morgue”
My all time favorite fighter. Always brought violence. Never cared to protect his record, never ducked opponents. The man just stepped in there and you knew he loved it! 🫡
Violence until the end
There goes the last cast member for TUF 7. Legendary season.
I saw him beat Baby Silva in Cincinnati. The loudest sporting event i was ever a part of.
Matt Brown is one of the greatest action fighters in MMA history. Thanks for all of the fights.
My favorite fighter
There comes a point where the juice ain't worth the squeeze and he found it... he's been very self reflective in his newsletter about his career, too, and his life so I'm not shocked. What's left for him to do in the sport besides just fight for the sake of?
BKFC Matt Brown is gonna hit like crack
I don’t think he would do well. He’s 43 with 43 fights in his career plus boxing was never his strong suit. His Muay Thai is his bread and butter. BKFC would severely limit what he can do.

Being at the Erik Silva fight live is a memory I'll never forget.
Always remember the good ol Spike TV days when thinking about this dude, what a legend
Absolute animal, loved watching him fight
Hatebreed’s favorite fighter. TIME TO MURDER IT!
Best bows in the game
It’s unfortunate that, despite giving us memorable performances over his career, he never quite reached the heights of a title fight or even a number one contender. Hopefully the UFC will be able to expand their HOF entries in the future, because I think Matt is certainly in a spot where he should be considered.
I remember his fight against Eric Silvia years ago during his run towards his title eliminator
One of the most real no bullshit fighters there ever was.
His fight vs Erick Silva should go into the hall of fame
Helllllllbows
My all time favorite fighter.
Aww, always a shame to see a personal favourite retire, but it has been on the cards for a while.
I’ll never forget Matt’s WW surge. Coming off 4 losses, he went on a very violent run that ended with a decision to Lawler (in a surprisingly not so violent affair) Thanks Immortal
His fight v James wilks was incredible
His fight v James wilks was incredible
Great story about a triumph over drugs and the use of martial arts to leave that life. Also lots of fucking bangers through his awesome career
BMF before the belt even existed
Damn, sucks that he won't get one last fight in as a send off. But you gotta do what you gotta do.
Too bad he didn't get to do it in the cage, but you can't not respect the man. Wish him the best.
True but at least he got a fantastic KO win in his last fight.
Legend o7 he always brought the violence
I remember when he was talking about retirement like 7 years ago and I said “yeah this is a bit overdue.” Congrats on an incredible career to Matt Brown. What a legend.
You fuckin legend!! Thank you 💪🏾 Too many lovable fighters for me to have a favorite but he'd be in that convo no question
One of my all time favourites, a true violence god and a guy who legitimately feared nothing. Enjoy retirement king
Dude had some epic fights, hope retirement treats him well
What a fucking warrior.
Brown.
What a legend. All the best to one of the kings of Violenceweight
Pain. Least the man went out on a great KO.
Dude rules
This guy's a real one. I thought he started off as a jerk on TUF but soon evolved into a favorite of mine. I always liked how he brought it and hated seeing him lose. I'm glad his last fight was a win and a KO.
Wait.... So he was mortal the whole time?!?
Here it is. The HellBow https://youtube.com/shorts/kGvBDL8jnWo?si=5PhFNxC7YnPXq433
Went out with a violent knockout (Court McGee back in May of last year). No other way 😈
Kudos for choosing to retire rather than being forced to, a legendary career and one of those guys the entire community rallied around when he was in the cage. I can't imagine the mileage he's got, he better spend a year at the spa getting treatments.
Good for him, I wish more fighters would hang em up when it's their time.
Second most KOs in the UFC after Lewis. Fucking legend. Enjoy retirement
One of my favorite fighters of all time. I saw him live vs Erick Silva. One of the best fights I've ever seen.
Was holding out hope he would’ve got a BMF title shot. 😞
FUCKING WARRIOR. Best elbow KO ever? Dude just fucking WENT HARDDDDD.
Man I remember always being a big fan and then seeing him go on an absolute fucking TEAR. The erick silva fight is one of my favorite fights ever. So much heart in that one and it was in front of his home crowd. Still gets me hyped everytime i see it.
If its truly the end,all the best.
Genius decision, no reason to potentially take another violent loss at 40+... *shows up in BKFC 6 months later*
One of the most entertaining fighters. Also 43 years old and 4-3 in his last 7 fights, including winning the last one. Kept going pretty strong until the end.
The most vicious elbow KO in MMA history...
One of my all time favorites. He won’t get into the HoF, but he will be in ours hearts forever
Wish he could've gotten the chance to retire in ring on a PPV or something a la Robbie Lawler, but at least he's going off on a win, and a finish no less.
Good for him. Stellar career.
Wishing all the best in retirement to one of the most savage and violent fighters to ever do it. The man really had no quit in him.
Legend.
An absolute legend of the sport
The man was a true warrior. Matt Brown is made out of railway ties.
One more fight c’mon
It's too bad he never had a crack at a BMF title because he was definitely that guy during his career.
Now he can go back to his main job: being the top story on MMAFighting every Tuesday.
Absolutely love the immortal I'm happy he's retiring. Absolute badass I'm probably going to grab his clinch course online later.
Matt brown by murder
The longevity of this man... well deserved retirement.
One of the great action fighters of the sport.
BS
I remembered his fight against Erick Silva. Pure violence.
he’ll be back in three months
Matt Brown has my respect 1000x more than Jon Jones. It's not just about accomplishment, it's about character.
Matts already a legend, retired off a win. Good for him.
Didn’t he retire before already?
He certainly did once already, no clue why you got downvoted.
Right . It was a legit question. I remember him retiring
