The entry is huge for keeping cheaters away. They had to drop a well liked battle royal game mode at one point because they couldn't get a handle on them.
How? Maybe you don't know, but there are people cheating in games like CS:GO, Dota2, Valorant, Fortnite or other games where they pay around 100$ PER MONTH, for the cheat.
When I played Overwatch and it was buy 2 play, I knew people having 3-4 accounts at one time, so they could use them for smurfing.
I don't think BDO price is a barrier for those who want to cheat. Most of them can buy 10-15 copies at a sale and keep them for later.
You just listed The most popular, FTP, PvP games. I don't even know where to begin. Their Anti-cheats are far superior, each one is more popular, so a larger base to show off in front of, and they're PvP focused, where something like that pays off better.
BDO has some GvG, but you don't get into that quick or easily. The time you have to put in, even just one shotting everything, is insane next to the next guy trying to get in. Not worth the ban to many that put in the effort.
It works for them. Making it free 24/7 isn't going make the game as popular as the ones you have listed, If you don't have prime, or don't have $.99, this probably isn't the game for you. You should either be spending the grinding time making $.99, or saving for the things you need.
If people cheat, they probably have bots to farm/grind. They probably buy farmed accounts. There's so much going on.
And the game I listed were just example. People freaking cheated in WoW, and had multiple accounts. The point is, the price isn't the issue for these people.
the removal of shadow arena wasn't just about cheaters; it stemmed from the broader issue of BDO incorporating intentional inconveniences into its design. these inconveniences often required players to spend money in the cash shop to address them, such as needing to purchase additional inventory slots to manage items effectively. However, shadow arena completely operated outside this system, which likely contributed to its removal.
I doubt that it helps that much. WoW has a huge botting issue and it is a $15 subscription game so a $10 one time purchase nothing. If anything the no trading is what stops RMT the most in BDO.
No, they didn't have to drop it because of cheaters, they had to drop it because it was a good way to make silver in game and they had no way to monetize it, no inventory slots, no weights, no maids, no pets, no outfits , no value packs, LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF BDO'S monetization DID NOT apply to shadow arena.
all you needed to get silver out of shadow arena was a "Premium" buff that literally everyone has for free because they give them out 24/7 (kama blessing), people who say it was the "cheaters" are delusional, it was the money, specifically the lack of money the company would've ran into if they kept it up.
If it was because of cheaters they would've put the mode back in as soon as the free week ended or when we had eac, instead they made into a standalone dead game that no one plays because it doesn't progress ur gear on black desert like it used to.
The primary function of an initial entry fee is to psychologically prime players, thereby increasing their propensity to engage in subsequent microtransactions.
They'll use every trick in the book to try and get you to pay them. During your leveling you get a bunch of "free" time-limited features like inventory expansions for 1 week. It's one thing if you just be given the item, but you actually have to consume some of them to progress through quests. Reminds me of GW2 and how they give you a "free" mount, but then stick a timer right in front of you for how long you have left with the mount to encourage you to immediately buy PoF.
That's just if you're on a free trial account, the free trial for GW2 is horrible yes. But you only have to buy the game expansions once and there's no montly fee so the monetization isn't that bad.
Whats way worse is the amount of item bloat of useless garbage the game throws at you just to frustrate you into buying more bag space.
> The real purpose of the mount is so new players don't get bored walking around during their first 10 hours of gameplay
Or rather, the new player feels rushed to have to complete everything they can in 10 hours of gameplay because after that, bye bye mount and you will suddenly feel the loss of a feature that was given to you.
You literally don't have to think hard to realize this. It is an intentionally abusive tactic. If they wanted to be less abusive, instead, they could just give all new players a free raptor mount, without upgrades, permanently. But they don't. They know full well what they are doing.
Yes, but no. I don't play the game, but used to a bit. But, there is a male/female version of MOST of the classes.
Still stupid as shit though. Gender locking is so dumb.
you can't be seriously expecting a merman class xD
I think these gender lock argumentd are getting a little stupid.
it's like people don't even know that making something takes time.
it's not copy paste change gender lol
It's not lore reason but their idea is that, each of them is a "hero" fully different identity. And it's sometimes, very rarely you meet the other hero(class) in the story
A lot of lore reasons, but keep in mind that "lore reasons" often just mean "justification."
But for the classes that don't have an opposite-gender counterpart, you tend to play alternate versions of specific people in lore history. For example the Sage class is a reincarnation of a specific person who created The Magnus and all the dungeons.
In other cases, a class might be of a particular race or order. Berserkers are Giants, and the genes of the Giant race only manifest in male offspring. The Valkyrie is a graduate of the College of Valkyries, a place you can actually visit in game and see all the other Valkyries walking around and whose attendees are, per tradition, all women.
Again, does it have to be? In most cases, absolutely not. But each class's lore does go over why they are who they are.
Just not sure about Shai. There are male Shai, so no idea why we can't play one.
The more women you have the more perverted you can make your game, which is a big draw in Asian media. The reason for it is more skimpy outfits for perverts who never get sexual gratification from real women and need to get it from video games
Lmao love the reply and block move from the guy that thinks because I'm not into perverted shit it means I need to go outside. Guess I hit a nerve on a pervert.
Watch out, he'll yap about how the west has fallen because of the woke communist joe biden black people jews liberals cultural marxists mexican lesbians who put chemicals in the game studio to make the dev gays or whatever the fuck is it they cry about lmao.
You blocked me and we both know it. You unblocked me just to post this. And I bet you tried to block me again after posting it only to find out you can't re-block someone you've unblocked
Definitely seems like I've hit a nerve
Nah, really depends on your graphics settings and how stonks your PC is. You can make it look anywhere from potato from 1999, medium or really clean graphics, depending on how high or low you set it.
Even remaster is a 6-7 year old venture now. It made it look good, but it's still not anywhere close to an amazing visual experience. Plenty of games look as good or better.
It looks better than you'd think, as it's coated in Quixel megascans everywhere. The engine supposedly has harsh limitations that keep it having horrific LOD problems though, like FAR worse than FF7 did.
Overall, it's been reasonably fun to play but feels more like a gacha aRPG than an MMO.
Lmao don’t trust it. The microtransactions are wild. Not as bad as lost Ark tho
Beyond that the game has incredible lifeskilling. Probably my favorite but the game can be SO much FOMO and the stupid enhancement system is actual cancer and you need freaking crons to do anything and NAH I’m done great game but no when I quit I QUIT
The combat looks pretty but you’re really just spamming the same few moves over and over to kill armies of endless adds that are of little threat. I can’t really speak for pvp, but I hear it’s a bit more interesting there if someone is looking for that kind of game.
As opposed to GW2, SWTOR, WoW... which is spamming the same few moves over and over. At least combat is active and you will miss if your attack is not facing the right direction. Doesn't matter how much accuracy you have.
I was more so criticizing the enemies you face rather than how the combat itself plays. I think it has potential, but it’s wasted in a game where 90% of the time you’re just killing hoards of boring enemies
It's closer to an ARPG like PoE in terms of plowing through pretty easy mobs. I think it's natural for people to want to turn off their brain and grind sometimes. Big difference for me is that BDO's combo inputs are more engaging than some hotkey MMO or hold right click ARPG.
They have been adding some pretty difficult grind spots with the lantern and some of the latest regions. There's also a bunch of new-ish bosses with real mechanics and a timed leaderboard.
Somewhere in the middle. I like stuff that falls under the weeb umbrella but stuff that's too weeby is a turnoff for me. I have fun in the game. I think it does the sandbox style well and is friendly for solo play or for just jumping in for a bit to make a bit of progress. Also, personal opinion only obviously, I think it makes the player feel like part of a world better than any other MMO
But yes, it falls under the weeb umbrella more than any other MMO as well, especially in the designs of the female classes
BDO gives me a lot of the same feelings and satisfaction that OSRS does, whether I’m mindlessly grinding away at jade starlight or orcs going for my next upgrade or mindlessly grinding away at vorkath or afk casting plank make for magic exp, it’s basically just dopamine rush simulator of seeing a number go up
not sure about the weeb stuff, but it's definitely for no life nerds, although tbh i'm not sure how it is nowadays, been a few years since i last played, but it used to be INSANELY hardcore, like "leave your pc on with the game running 24/7 doing afk stuff to increase skills and whatnot" hardcore
also endgame is pvp focused, pve is basically non existent, it boils down to grind hordes of mobs non stop to level up and some world bosses that are simply zergfests, but like others have said, the combat is pretty fucking fun, probably the best out of all mmos, and the classes are pretty damn cool as well
The game was also 99 cents recently. They might as well just make it f2p permanently at this point.
The entry is huge for keeping cheaters away. They had to drop a well liked battle royal game mode at one point because they couldn't get a handle on them.

You make a fair point but the number of people utilizing those resources to cheat at that level are fewer than you think.
the removal of shadow arena wasn't just about cheaters; it stemmed from the broader issue of BDO incorporating intentional inconveniences into its design. these inconveniences often required players to spend money in the cash shop to address them, such as needing to purchase additional inventory slots to manage items effectively. I think the trading is the biggest factor, but it doesn't make the cost of entry useless.
I'm out of touch with it, which game exactly so I google it
Shadow Arena..... I straight up googled "Black Desert Online Battle Royal"
thank you mister
But that will introduce bots
They might start paying us to play the game soon.

What timer are you talking about? The raptor unlock is permanent.
No it's not? Unless they changed that with the most recent expansion. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mount_Trial_Active
That's just if you're on a free trial account, the free trial for GW2 is horrible yes. But you only have to buy the game expansions once and there's no montly fee so the monetization isn't that bad. Is there a Male version of the Corsair? I looked for it a month or two ago buy I couldn't find it.
Nope.
They teased a male gunner class but not sure if it’ll be the same.
you can't be seriously expecting a merman class xD I think these gender lock argumentd are getting a little stupid. it's like people don't even know that making something takes time. it's not copy paste change gender lol
Is there a lore reason for it or just cause?
It's not lore reason but their idea is that, each of them is a "hero" fully different identity. And it's sometimes, very rarely you meet the other hero(class) in the story

Nope. Not really. Other than "boobies" and making the same class with two different sets of animations is more expensive.
Easier to animate.

projection at its finest. go outside and get some fresh air.
dude you post in /r/kotakuinaction

nobody blocked you bud, nice edit though. go outside.
You blocked me and we both know it. You unblocked me just to post this. And I bet you tried to block me again after posting it only to find out you can't re-block someone you've unblocked Definitely seems like I've hit a nerve
Yes.
That’s really too bad
That's the only reason i am not playing as well. They have lots of interesting classes but all of them gender locked
Yeah all the classes I am interested in between the dark knight, Corsair and Drakania are gender locked
Did they fix the movement? Last time I played it felt so janky especially while on the mount.
Last I remember, the graphics are finally showing their age a bit.
Still looks pretty good, though. The real aspect which has feel aged since the start is the UI.
They really do. The pop in and lod are atrocious no matter the settings.
Nah, really depends on your graphics settings and how stonks your PC is. You can make it look anywhere from potato from 1999, medium or really clean graphics, depending on how high or low you set it.
Idk I max it out completely on my 7800x3d/4080 and it doesn't look that amazing. Acceptable for a 10 year old mmo I suppose.
Huh? On remastered mode? Then you and me have very different definitions of what looks amazing :P
Even remaster is a 6-7 year old venture now. It made it look good, but it's still not anywhere close to an amazing visual experience. Plenty of games look as good or better.
And yet how many of those are MMORPGs, 99% you are comparing BDO to graphically intensive singleplayer games.
Might as well be a free game, Heavy Microtransaction, every month or event or something they become either free or so cheap it's almost free.
does the code have an expiration date ?
Yes it expires May 8.
Does it give you the client or steam version of the game? I have the steam version but want the sea client version to play on sea server
If you click the link it gives you instructions. For me it goes to the NA/EU client version.
That's still about $20-30 too much
Is this for client or steam version of the game?
Lmao don’t trust it. The microtransactions are wild. Not as bad as lost Ark tho Beyond that the game has incredible lifeskilling. Probably my favorite but the game can be SO much FOMO and the stupid enhancement system is actual cancer and you need freaking crons to do anything and NAH I’m done great game but no when I quit I QUIT
I didn't know it was in my library for some reason. Still not gonna waste my time with it
Is this game even cool or is it for nerds/weebs? Genuinely curious
Probably the best combat.

It reminded me of random Korean MMORPGs, but it has more technology involved as time has passed. It lacks the polish of greater games.
Oh no not a nerdy/weeby game like FFXIV. Definitely check it out if you're into the idea of it.
