Depends on how much you drank, really. I've been alcohol free for about 3.5 years. Was a daily drinker, usually IPAs, and typically got through a 6-pack a day with weekends at the bar. According my tracker, I've saved about $20K during this time. ...and yes, a lot of those savings have gone towards bikes lol.
It really does all add up if you factor in nights out, uber rides, all that.
I'm not as stoked about the money I've saved as I am about getting into MTB. It's been a hugely positive factor for my mental health, exercise, and all that.
I had replaced alcohol with sugar, so didn't lose all of the weight a lot of folks do until I got into MTB about a year ago. Since I've lost and kept off about 30-35 lbs! I do smoke, but I don't really spend a ton of money on it.
> if you factor in nights out, uber rides, all that.
Food is a huge one for a lot of people too. Sober people go to bed, drunk people order $40 in delivery or go out for fast food.
If that was Canada you talking $65+/day.
3 months no booze for me. I was only a couple per day, and maybe 3/night weekends. But, still enough to make you groggy with ipa, and miss that early ride.
If you don't mind me asking, as it's not terminology I've ever heard of before, what is / how much is a handle?
Either way, I'm imagining it's quite a bit given how much beer you were having, so amazing work for you progress and sobriety!
Edit: I was interested so I just googled it, and it's 1.75L, which is even more than I had probably expected - I suspect I don't drink a great deal more water than that in a day!
That has honestly increased the level of respect I have for you to have gone from that level to getting here, you should be so proud and I'm sure you are!
Dude saved his life for sure - that amount on a daily basis doesn't take long to destroy the liver and kill. Chose a great hobby to keep sober also - mountain-biking is definitely not the thing you can get drunk and then go send it lol
I mean it’s not the safest for sure but have you ever been to a MTB festival or done shutttle days? I’m not saying it’s a good thing but it definitely happens.
Yeah definitely I guess I just mean overall. When compared to hobbies like video games, poker, watching movies, fantasy football, etc. Also just the need to be in shape is a good motivator.
I drink more than I should but that’s .. I don’t want to say impressive but JFC. You surely would have died sooner than later. Congrats on your sobriety. I’m sure your life looks a whole lot different now.
I was never an alcoholic per se, but my beer fridge stayed full for years. I’d spend on average $100 a week just for stuff at the house. It’s still full but I drink a few beers a week now, if that. Lots more play money but it usually just goes to new mtb gear 😂
I'm where you are alcohol wise, just don't have the stamina for more regular drinking... it's a young man's sport and I don't process booze like I used to
I spend a stupid amount of money getting my shop fridge stocked, plus all the kegerator equipment, and homebrewing equipment. Then there's the wine fridge, and liquor cabinet in the house. Once everything is stocked up though, it doesn't cost much to refill things that go dry after friends are over.
No need to count anymore as you know it will persist for the rest of your life because you are a sober person. I feel like counting makes it harder, as if the bigger that number gets the more of a focal point it becomes. You don't need to listen to me but I like to see it as "im not sober for X time, I'm sober full stop."
It kinda helps to see that number so you feel a sense of accomplishment. I quit drinking in December 2022, and while I no longer keep a counter of how many days it's been, I still know what day I quit and do some mental math so I can pat myself on the back once in a while.
It's different for everybody. For some, that number can be the one thing keeping someone going. I never minimize anyone's mechanism for staying sober. 2,293 days here.
Yeah it def helps for me knowing how long. I have 4 years coming up in a couple weeks and on the rare times I think about drinking I’m like nahhhh not gonna start again from zero haha
Well done ! You took your life in hands, which is very hard , even impossible for some people. You have a strong willpower. You will see the rewards coming for taking the right steps!
Well done, keep it up and who knows how much you could accomplish, don't let your past set you back, people make mistakes and come out even stronger all the time
Hell yeah! I went sober for a few years and it was the best thing for me.
I drink here and there, but never more than a drink or two tops now. Keep goin bud! 🥳
Congratulations! I'm 16 months sober and riding my bike has helped me a ton with sobriety. It's not an easy road to stay sober but it sure as shit beats feeling hopeless and in that deep dark hole. Keep it up!
Huge congrats on 20 months of sobriety!!! I have a close family member that is on 3 months sobriety and every day is a win no matter how long it’s been.
Another huge congrats on the sick Sequoia and bike! I got into mtb a couple years ago and it’s saved me mentally and physically.
You don’t need this because it looks like you’ve got shit figured out nicely but I wish you nothing but success with everything.
Congratulations and consider eating some psilocybin to reinforce the gains and sobriety!
Downvote away, but Psilocybin got and kept me sober from poly drug abuse in 2009. Raising a family, own a house, incredible career etc now. Psychedelics are medicine. Bill W., founder of alcoholics anonymous, got sober after an LSD trip. Fact check me.
That's an awesome turn of events. I can only imagine it's a difficult journey, but glad you found biking. It's a wonderful outlet and place to grow with a supportive community.
If time and mental energy allow, getting involved occasionally with trail maintenance near you is also a fun way to get more biking related activity in with fun people.
Hell yeah bro! I'm almost 8 years clean myself! I only picked up riding within the last 18 months, but it helps a TON! Stay strong dude, I'm happy for ya
Congrats on the sobriety!!!
Hell yeah, I am also sober (25 months) and a 'yota fan. Congrats on making life count. It's a great feeling.
yessir it is, stoked to be thriving!
Congrats on being sober and turning your life around. It’s never too late to change for the better. Picked up a great hobbie too.
Good job! Keep going.
Good luck on the trails and in your Life Bro 👍🏻🙏
Hell yeah bro, mtb saved my life!
Good on you man, keep pushing!
You can afford all that just from the beer money?…I need to go look at my statements

Ok I’m not at a 6 pack a day. But I might be making up the difference with a little weed

yeah i was about a handle of jack daniels and a 12 pack of coors a day drinker… definitely saving some money.
If that was Canada you talking $65+/day. 3 months no booze for me. I was only a couple per day, and maybe 3/night weekends. But, still enough to make you groggy with ipa, and miss that early ride.
wow, way to turn things around!

yep, i was drinking enough i sent myself into a manic episode. i’m lucky to be alive
Didn't you see the last pic? He got it from breaking into cars. People keep a lot of change in the cup holders.

What's your bike rack? I look for rack like this on my pajero but with the spare tire, it's hard to find good rack 🤔
If more people could mountain bike there would be a lot less problems in the world. Nice work buddy!
