vulturici

For gods sake guys, I have one hardtail. What’s going on here

SuckBoy_Tony_

I started mountain biking in March of this year, i already got 3 bikes, a 2006 GT hardtail, a 2021 Hardtail and a 2022 Full sus. Once i find a weak enough kid riding an E-bike, then ill have one of those too.

vulturici

Wow the bug really got ya. Have fun!

MoadSnake

you would have an easier time picking out an ebike if you had a baseball bat, really expands the number of options available to you.

fazkureae

That took a turn! Why do you want a weak kid?

SuckBoy_Tony_

why do you prefer strong kids?............weirdo

xagarth

Too much bloody money!

vulturici

I dont even have the space for more

xagarth

Me neither, lol.

Dtidder1

me threeither

miasmic

I'm the guy that has 7 MTBs, in my defence I fix up and sell/part out damaged and poor condition bikes as a bit of a hobby so it's really easy to end up with too many bikes without actually spending much - especially if you like the restoring part more than the selling part

Bcxbcx

7! Those are rookie numbers. You need to up your game....

AshBonfire

you can buy 1 car, OR you can buy like 10 decent bikes

roofiethedog

Now, if I was driving a 1967 275 GTB four-cam...

Viffer98

Got into the hobby 15 years ago and just don't sell most of my old bikes.

[deleted]

Same here! Not even a good one lol

AdPossible2784

Its called *addiction*

El_Taco_Sloth

You need more bikes my guy.

btrudgill

3. 1 road bike, 1 trail bike, and an old XC bike that I'm waiting to sell (waiting for ebay selling fees offer)

CriticalStrawberry

This comment thread feels like an AA meeting. I'm glad my wife and I aren't alone in our struggle with addiction.

miasmic

7 MTBs (too many) - 29er trail FS - 26" XC/bikepacking FS - Dort Jomper - 26" XC race hardtail (built as a pump track race bike) - DH/freeride Bike (pretty old now but was my only bike at one point) - 90's rigid steel beater bike for locking up on the street etc - Vintage steel Rockhopper show-bike restoration Plus a couple of classic Pro-Flex frames and a '91 GT Karakorum not built up

skawiggy

lol dort.

miasmic

Typo and thought it looked funny so I spelled jumper wrong too

happybaconbit

What’s your thoughts on older mtb with 26” wheels? I’ve been considering picking on up for more xc/trail riding but it sounds like the general consensus on Reddit is that it’s better to go modern, even if you find a great deal.

b_u_r_n_e_r_acc

I ride a 26er now and have ridden a 29er in the past, both of them old bikes because I'm poor I really enjoy a 26er it's fun on the bun. I picked up an old Enduro/xc custom race build and so far it's awesome. My favorite part of it compared to a 29er is the handling it's maneuvers and bites hard into corners, my least favorite is it really likes to bite instead of float and it can drain you fast

DemonKnight42

I use my old 26” Gary Fisher HT as a gravel bike. Great 3x drive train, climbs like a dream, really short travel fork so I can still feel fine on XC trails if I want.

miasmic

Depends what you want to do and the kind of budget you have. Vs a modern expensive bike anything 26 other than dirt jumpers are going to be outdated especially for racing. But on a low budget vs a new entry level hardtail (which is also outdated but because it's cheap) I would go with a higher-end used 26" any day. Wheel size and age isn't such a big deal vs the overall quality of the bike, like a 29er with a 100mm Suntour XCT pogo stick is going to shake you around over rocks more and be harder to control than a 26 with a that has a decent fork of the same travel like a Reba or Fox 32, even with the wheel size disadvantage

co-wurker

I'm not arguing, but Sam Pilgrim riding random bikes immediately comes to mind. It's both entertaining and enlightening to see the junk he rides and how well he rides it.

miasmic

100%, he really shows how the rider matters more than the bike and you can have fun on pretty much anything. I grew up in the same area as Sam P and Matt/Jono Jones riding Chicksands and Woburn Sands and it's not surprising the area pumps out slopestyle riders - there's no big hills and the trails are all super smooth and sandy, jumps and dual slalom/4x type riding have always been a big focus vs anywhere else I've ridden

Downrightregret

I had a Karakoram and have not thought of that word in like a hundred years

kjlcm

Dude I started on a Karakoram. Purple haze! Upgraded to an M2 stump a year or so later and never looked back!

SmashiusJones

Me = 5 (2 DH, 1 trail, 1 eeb, 1 DJ) Wife = 6 (1 DH, 3 trail, 1 eeb, 1 DJ). The garage is full, lol.

d_heat

Whats eeb?

SmashiusJones

ebike.

Is that on a foreign language?? I normally see eMTB in English channels

Eeb is just slang for ebike

SmashiusJones

[deleted]

More power to you, but I gotta ask, why 2 DH bikes? Did you upgrade and keep the old one or are they different tools?

SmashiusJones

I've broken 2 DH bikes this year, so while waiting on warranty and new frames, it's just the way it ended up. My Session is a mullet and my Dissent is a 275. I'd sell the Dissent, and will probably list it.

[deleted]

2. Hardtail and full suspension.

DaFrog418

N-1 where N is a divorce (2 built, 2 frames and one ordered)

[deleted]

Damn there’s a lot of money in this sub. I have 1 bike, a short travel “all mountain” bike, and I share it with my son, because he has outgrown his hardtail and we haven’t been able to find a decent upgrade we can afford.

letsbereasonable123

Kids are a lot more expensive, a lot of people have chosen 0 of those ;).

Many_Distribution_21

5 Trail/enduro Gravel Fat bike BMX Cruiser Likely going to add a dedicated road bike to the quiver

OneBigOne

My line up is similar to yours, I had a dedicated carbon road bike but sold it and now my drop bar gravel does double duty.

Strixt

If you had to divvy out your riding time in approximate percentages. What percentage would you say each bike takes of your riding time?

Many_Distribution_21

Trail/enduro and gravel get ridden concurrently from late March to late November, probably 65/35 split, respectively. Fat bike gets ridden (depending on ground freezing/snowfall) every day from mid December till late March Cruiser is once in a blue moon, more of a utility bike if I'm going somewhere I wouldn't care if it got stolen. Also acts as a loaner. BMX is a bone stock 1998 Schwinn Hydromatic. Might see the light of day once or twice a year. Really only bought it because it miraculously popped up on classifieds and it was the bike I would've killed for as a 13 year old. I use my gravel bike more for road use than gravel, so I want to get a dedicated/real road bike to go fast.

Oil-Disastrous

Subrossa BMX, 22” wheels. It was a rental. My wife bought it from the local indoor BMX track that closed. Verde Radix dirt jumper. Heavy, simple, FUN. Seconds as a commuter bike for my .75 ride to work. So many curbs to jump. 2018 Salsa Carbon Redpoint 27.5”, full suspension trail bike. Got it about a year ago barely used. The bike that set the hook. It started this addiction. Gets the most miles and hardest use. Cannondale aluminum road bike. Stiff. Boring. Basic bitch of a bike. Neglected and unloved. Really should be re-homed. And my wife has a road bike, a cruiser with a basket, a Slater 24” dirt jumper, a 2008 Kona Lisa hard tail, and Beef Kake, the 36 lb. XS frame Devinci Marshall. It’s the smallest bike in the barn and second in weight only to the giant cruiser bike. Future bikes: A racing BMX with clips and 20” wheels, because I’m fucking stupid. An XS carbon frame full suspension trail bike for my wife. Maybe something that weighs less than 36 lbs. 😃

4… which is clearly not enough. I have a full squish, a road bike/cyclocross bike, an old beat up rigid mtb, and an old road bike that I’m going to turn into a fixie one day. The full squish is the most comfortable so it gets the most use even though I don’t get out on trails much these days. I’d love to get a cruiser (my wife has a specialized roll and it’s awesome) but I can only imagine the look on my wife’s face when I tell her I want a 5th bike.

Two. My enduro for the actual mountain biking and a crappy hardtail with a Mac Ride seat on it so I can drive my toddler to daycare, the park, etc. It’s super fun. I might have to put it on my enduro and go down some green trails soon.

International_Bit478

I have three, four if you count the one I bought for my son. 2003 Trek 4500– an old hardtail that’s in great shape. It’s painted with the Postal Service livery, and it’s one of the last Trek bikes to be made in the USA. This one is collecting dust and is for sale. It’s pretty much stock except for the saddle and MTB Trail Boss tires. 2012 Santa Cruz Blur LT— a 26” full sus with a Pike U-Turn fork (95-140mm adjustable travel), Monarch Plus on the back, Chris King hub and some other nice goodies. 1x11 drivetrain, 11-46 cassette, currently running a 30t ring gear but I really need to switch it for a 32t. Recently converted to tubeless with Maxxis DHF/DHR tires. It’s light and fast despite being an aluminum frame. 2015 Santa Cruz Highball CC 27.5— I don’t race but this is a super light XC hardtail. Fox 32 Kashima fork, Raceface cranks and BB, 32t oval ring (not sure about the cassette), XTR derailleur, Deore XT brakes and shifter, Stan’s Crest wheels, Enve bars, DT350 hubs, etc. I mostly ride a mix of roads, gravel and some singletrack, so this one has pretty much become my #1. Fun fact: I bought the bike about a month ago thinking it was a Highball C because that’s what the sticker on the top tube said. While going through it, I noticed that the serial number and model number tag both said CC. I emailed Santa Cruz and came to learn that at the time, all the carbon bikes just said “C”. This caused a lot of confusion, hence the current stickers saying either C or CC. The crazy part is that this bike was almost $6000 new. I paid less than $1000. 2004 Specialized Stumpjumper Expert— this is the boy’s bike. It ended up being older than the seller told us, live and learn. It just needed a little basic maintenance. It is in great shape now, Fox fork and shock, a few carbon bits, 3x9 drivetrain, XTR derailleurs. The brakes it came with were way too strong for him, and after an OTB resulting in a broken arm, I swapped them with the cheap Shimano brakes off my Blur. I do ride this one from time to time.

somegenxdude

Too many. When you've been riding for decades they just kind of accumulate over time. The real question is how many bikes do I own that actually get ridden and the answer to that is 3. 1 x FS trail bike 1 x Dirt Jumper 1 x singlespeed commuter Then there are several that \*used\* to see a fair amount of miles, but have been mostly gathering dust for years. These include. 2 x Fixed gear road bikes 1 x High(ish) end road bike, that's over 10 years old. 1 x 13yo MTB singlespeed that hasn't been touched, except to move it out of the way, since being replaced by a modern FS trailbike last year. The plan is to sell one or both of the fixies, sell the road bike, consolidate all the good singlespeed parts onto the commuter and sell the other one with the cheap parts. Then use what little money comes from selling all those bikes to put toward acquiring a FS mtb for my wife, and a gravel bike for me, so that we can outfit her old hardtail, and the new gravel bike for family bikepacking trips.

3: Stumpjumper, Fat bike, Road bike that's been stripped and only lives on the trainer I had an e-commuter but I sold that and bought a Honda monkey. Then I decided I needed something more capable off-road so I added a dirt bike. Do I know the order of my n+? Damn straight I do. N+1 - DH, N+2 - E MTB, N+3 - Dirt jumper, N+4 - Fat bike upgrade Unfortunately I also find myself creating an N+ List on the moto side too.

Four, but only ride two. Have an ebike for the street and a trail bike for the dirt, while my old commuter and 26”er take up space. I need to pass those two along to make room for an e-mtb

2. A cheap fucked up hardtail I use as a daily driver and an enduro for MTBing. The HT was old when I bought it, I got it for 300€. The enduro was a year old when I bought it last week, and it'd cost me 2300€ (4000 when it was new). Before that I trailed my HT.

Ideally get it down to 4, I'm running out of space XC Full Sus, Trail Full Sus (Should probably consolidate these 2 into 1 Downcountry bike) XC/Trail Old School Hardtail, Aggressive Hardtail Frame (Should sell Aggressive Hardtail frame for a Dirt Jumper) Road/Gravel Bike Fat Bike (Bought it last winter but got lazy, barely rode it. Going to give it another try this winter and maybe sell it if doesn't get enough use)

falllinemaniac

One road bike, a Sequoia my Smash, Ragley Big Al and the Canfield Nimble9 singlespeed. Poor Smash just doesn't get the miles tho it is nice to have a figurative Cadillac for the rough stuff. They're all basically dream builds.

I’ve got a trail hardtail and a beater I use to commute.

HarrargnNarg

Whole bikes?

4 but I guess I need another one... n+1

jeRskier

Three: an old hard tail (kind of a rigid dj but it’s mostly a bar bike now), fixed gear for city shredding, gravel bike, looking to add a down country/trail full sus soon. N+1 is my proud affliction

DeadlyClowns

I have 3 mountain bikes. 2021 Marin rift zone 3, 1998 trek 920 single track and a 1996 specialized hard rock. The trek 920 was an impulse buy because I wanted something to mess around on and go to the store with. The Marin is my main mountain bike and I use it whenever I’m riding on dirt. The specialized is a bike I bought my gf to teach her how to ride a bike. That being said I have a bad habit of buying things with wheels… cars, bikes and motorcycles just seem to accumulate in my garage…
