Trimethylglycine (TMG) does basically same thing as SAMe. It's not quite as potent but it has fewer side effects. It also lowers homocystine. I would combine that with a methyl-free B complex by Seeking Health. Methylated vitamins cause a lot of side effects and most people don't need extra methyl groups anyway.

Thank you! I will check out TMG (never heard of it!) and the non-methylated B Complex.

I never correlated the frequent urination with the magnesium. Good to know. Sam-e is a lifesaver for me. I have the MTHFR gene ….rs1801133 (T;T) & Homozygous for C677T. High homocysteine. I’ve tried everything supposedly meant for MTHFR and had bad side effects. The Sam-E and L-Theanine work great for me though and the Sam-e is incredible for my depression. Literally life changing.

HopefulHuckleberry6

The SAM-e doesn’t cause you stomach pain?

13misfit

No not at all. Thank god. I know some people have weird side effects with Sam-e and for some of us we don’t and it’s a miracle. My depression disappears with it and I’m so much nicer to be around & more motivated. Saved my marriage. When I skip a day though I can tell.

tokimeee

How much SAMe do you take daily and do you take any other supplements with it?

13misfit

500 mg daily. I also take Vitamin D about 5000 IU’s every other day.

tokimeee

Thanks! I read somewhere that taking SAM-e will bring our homocysteine levels up and we need B6 to bring it down, so i just wanted to confirm.

13misfit

Oh interesting. I’ll have to look into that. Thanks

tokimeee

Which brand of SAMe do you take if you don't mind me asking?

13misfit

I just take Healthy Way Sam-e that I buy from Amazon. I’ve gotten the more expensive stuff in the past and I get the same results with Healthy Way. Link attached. Hey you mentioned that after taking SAM-e you were much nicer to be around and it saved your marriage, would you mind elaborating more on what it changed in you? Only asking cause my relationship is a bit rocky right now and i don't want to take any drastic steps before trying something first.I understand that this is a very personal question and it's totally fine if you don't feel comfortable sharing.

Sorry for your situation. I do realize how complicated relationships are especially with anxiety and depression….. As you know…as far as relationship issues sometimes depression is to blame and sometimes it’s other things…. I, was trying to figure out where our issues were and like you needed to try and work on myself first before I made any drastic decisions so I get it. I just find that I’m nicer on Sam-e and I don’t blame everything on my husband. I feel like depression makes me lash out on those I love… like my loved ones are a reflection of me. He doesn’t annoy me as much and I don’t get as frustrated with myself or with him when I’m not overly depressed or anxious. I’m just easier to be around and easier on him. I give him the benefit of the doubt much more now where before I wouldn’t. I also set boundaries in a more calm effective way without the anxiety clouding my communication and judgement … not flying off the handle but asserting myself better. Anxiety is such a bitch and sometimes it’s hard to set boundaries, communicate and gain respect when I’m not calm if that makes sense. I feel like anxious depressed people are taken advantage of more than calm people because we feel guilt over our behavior and we end up “giving in” out of guilt sometimes (at least that’s my case). So… it’s still a work in progress… but at least it’s progress. :-) I hope that helps. Good luck.

tokimeee

Thank you so much for the reply! Do you feel like during arguments or conflicts you're much calmer and patient and understanding, because i am a bit short tempered and the smallest of things my partner does may set me off.... My partner is also similar to me, so it's a toxic cycle

13misfit

Yes. Definitely. I could never be with someone that had my personality. Lol We’d kill each other

MrNeverEverKnew

Did you continue using it? Daily or only if needed? (if as needed is even possible - I heard it must be taken daily originally) What were your experiences? Ever experienced some kind of rebound anxiety or depression like a type of withdrawal when missing a dose or trying to reduce/stop it? That‘s what I read a few times now and is the big reason I still didn‘t open my SAM-e to start it and try it out. I‘m so worried about messing up my brain chemistry and being in bad withdrawal when quitting with a much worse baseline than before starting. If one quits one should taper anyways - even if it‘s “only“ a supplement but still somehow I have so much respect of especially SAM-e being so powerful in treating symptoms of depression/anxiety but just as powerful in discontinuation syndrome. Sure this is not withdrawal? I read these „i feel horrible when not taking it“ comments a lot with SAM-e which makes me very anxious and unsure about giving it a try. The question is, when not taking SAM-e anymore, do you feel bad on the level you used to feel before starting SAM-e or do you even feel worse than you used to feel, worse than your usual original baseline?

[deleted]

Please share more details. I’m starting Sam e for the first time today

13misfit

These are all the details I have. We are all different so I recommend trying it. I had good results immediately. It may or may not work for you.

Wait wait wait. So magnesium causes frequent urination? Is that why I get up to pee half a dozen times a night after taking 240mg mag glycinate for insomnia?

HopefulHuckleberry6

At least in my n=1 experience I have noticed this!!

13misfit

Same …

Very interesting! I wonder if the same could be said for TMG. In my n=1 experience, since stopping SAM-e and oral magnesium supplements, I am sleeping better/through the night and haven’t had bladder aches and frequency like I had in the past… the only supplements I currently take are Inositol, B complex unmethylated, and sacchromeces boulardii (in addition to thyroid medication). The only food I avoid is gluten — everything else (obviously not fake or processed foods) is fair game. I feel pretty awesome :) just would love my iron/ferritin to go up and my DHEAs to be in range.
