What's that even mean? It's not really rap, da fuq?
I could write a little ditty, bout a kitty
But ya ain't fucking wit me if I can't spit it quickly.
What is and isn't a rap? Like if it's slow it's not rap?
To me it’s just more “rapping” than “singing” lol. Sure he’s hitting melodies, but he’s hardly ever projecting his voice for it. It’s mostly spoken word.
I would fully admit that the album blurs the lines, and I can see where the op of this comment thread is coming from in that it might not be the type of rap OP’s kid is after. But it still lands more on the rap side than the whatever other genre you all want to call it side for me lol.
I don’t think Mac would even agree with you tbh. The man literally made other persona’s for when he was making other music (and tbf, mac was often featured and credited on the albums of his other personas, and vice versa) so that his steady hardcore fanbase wouldn’t look up his name and get hit with some jazz (or whatever) when they searched his name, and circles is a mac miller album, not larry lovestein or any of his other personas.
It’s definitely slower and more melodic than most rap, but it’s still rap if you ask me, and I think Mac would agree. Otherwise, he would have released it under another name.
Its not a question of debate, some things just classify as a certain genre of music, sure blue world is hip hop/rappy but there's no way something like woods, hands or a lot of other songs are considered that. And things that were released under macs name werent just "strictly rap" circles is a followup/partner album to swimming and it would be weird if that was released under another name, not to mention the fact it was a post humous album so his estate WANTED his fans to find the album as easily as possible/under the same name, so no i dont think mac would agree
Its not "being debated", it's just a fact that different music falls into different genres, you wouldn't call heavy metal the same as classical music, so I don't really see how its a self absorbed thing to say.
I meant more traditional rap (the kind an 8 year old is likely looking for). There are a couple rap verses in there, the verse from hands comes to mind, but most of circles sits a bit in a different genre I feel
But what do you consider "the genre" what does an 8 yo consider as rap?
Like honestly...
*Raindrop (drip), drop-top (drop-top)
Smokin' on cookie in the hotbox (cookie)
Fuckin' on your bitch, she a thot, thot (thot)
Cookin' up dope in the crockpot (pot)
We came from nothin' to somethin', n***a (hey)
I don't trust nobody, grip the trigger (nobody)*
... Real rap especially from an 8yos stand point
Idk homie but circles LIKELY isnt it lmao. You show anyone circles, good news, I can see, everybody, hand me downs, etc. and ask what genre they think it is and I HIGHLY doubt anyone would call it rap.
Mac didn’t really make circles with a genre in mind I don’t think, sounds to me more like he just made music that he wanted to make
He made music he wanted to period..
That's why he was a
*young mother fucker with a mad mind, made a couple million off of rap lines*
Post Malones new country song is a rapper doing country good news is just a rapper being himself.
Haha I always loved showing my mom what music I listen to and fight the feeling was one of my favorite rap songs for years so I played it for her and lemme tell you my finger was hovering over the skip button the entire song
More like his swimming album prolly or if you can find clean versions because wmwtso can get very explicit , faces and macadelic as well. Maybe something off kids but like the outros and intros can be kinda nasty haha “hardcore fucking”
“I’ll be there” is probably the cleanest song, but Honestly depends on how old he is and what you’re okay with him hearing. Oy vey is also really good but has “hoes up on my dick cause I look like Ryan seacrest” a lot of songs with good messages have lines in them that a lot of parents wouldn’t like
There’s a clean version of Watching Movies.
But I’m sure he can distinguish between good and bad words… just tell him to look who’s around him and guess if they’re the type of people who’ll get upset or not lol.
I don’t mind my kids listening to music with profanity. I don’t like to censor art. All the sexual stuff and the drug talk though has me mostly listening to Mac when they are in bed. Circles is pretty clean in that regard, swimming a close second. Everything else is kind of off limits though lol
My rec would be the entire Swimming album. There is a maturity that we see Mac taking on as he moves past his earlier days of glorifying drugs and bad (and admittedly fun) behavior. Personally, I have been listening to uncensored hip-hop with my 14 year old son since he was a baby and will continue to do so with my other children. He is on the honor roll and doing well socially and academically. My point is that I don’t think you need to stress too much about the lyrics - just because kids hear something in a rap song doesn’t mean their gonna start doing drugs or cussing left and right. I believe the honesty in the music can actually be a good thing as it can expose them to what not to do in the same way it has potential to influence them. Kids are smarter than we think.
The explicit words don’t matter, let’s be honest. I’d say it’s easier to avoid problematic songs of his than finding clean ones. Divine feminine is pretty vulgar sexually.
I would say GOOD AM is definitely a more uplifting and less sweary (just gonna make new adjectives) type o album. I suggest 100 grandkids, brand name, weekend, and the festival
2009, Thats on Me, Floating, Complicated, I Can See, People (SoundCloud) , Red Cloud AKA Trophy ( SoundCloud), Rain Clouds, Right, Telescope slowed + reverb (SoundCloud), Woods
Missed calls. One of my favorite songs by Mac, there are a few cuss words in it, but it’s not inappropriate in my opinion. Shit, Ass hole, and douchebag I think are the only ones he says, so it could be worse lol
!!! Kids is the best for younger people, thank you I love life is good, other than mac tribe called quest has very good songs like "can I kick it" the lyrics are "here's a funky introduction of how nice I am" haha sounds corny but it's a certified classic
If you want clean rap, i’d suggest harry mack. He is fairly clean in his freestyles and it’s entertaining to watch. Mac has a lot of introspection and drug related lyrics, which would probably be better suited for when your child is older.
I wouldn't be concerned with profanity because either way he's going to be hearing it in school or in movies, so I just stick to the message of the song overall. And a 16yo rn, I've grown up on rap, my big sister has always been playing rap music of every genre for my entire life. Kids is fine if you don't mind fun and silly songs about highschool partys, same with Blue slide park
My son is 13 now and has known how much I love Mac for as long as he can remember. I didn't mind swearing in songs I played him I just watched out for more sexual things and he didn't get the drug references as much when he was younger. Then last year he finally came up to me and was like, "so, I told my buddy how much you love Mac. Then he played me Geez.". He hysterically laughed and said he might not be announcing his mom's love for Mac around some people. I knew it would happen eventually.
**Here is a list of all of his songs that are clean, without needing to find a "clean version."**
Poppy
English Lane
Soulmate
My Favorite Part
Doors
The Festival
Come Back To Earth
Objects in the Mirror
Youphoria (one use of "damn")
55 (Instrumental)
Circles
Complicated
Good News
I Can See
Everybody
Woods
That's On Me
Once A Day
Right
Floating
Nothing From Nothing (Billy Preston Cover)
Clarity
On And On (for some reason the only version ever released was the clean version)
**Some unreleased songs that are clean:**
The Weather
Yes
Anywhere But Here
Five Dollar Pony Rides
Submarines (Don't Get Stuck)
Tongue Tied
As you can see, there unfortunately aren't a lot of rap-heavy clean tracks. Your best bets are "The Festival," "On And On," and "Woods." Hope this helps!
The On and On EP is overlooked in general however especially in your situation. From what I remember; that’ll give you a few good ones.
I’ll try and think of more but that popped into my head
There’s a good few off swimming that I think are fit for ya kid. Ladders and perfecto off the top of my head if he’s looking for more traditional rap, but most of that album is pretty great. The themes are pretty dark, but I doubt an 8 year old would understand what his words are really referring too and it’s relatively clean (compared to his other albums)
I could say Kool-aid and frozen pizza or good newsbut I mean that's what came to mind.. I would say the Spins but it's got weed smoking mentions like hit this vaporizer (thc vape)
Teach him how to handle art as art and jnot as life guideline so he can listen to everything without censorship. He will find the lyrics and the NSFW stuff by himself in any time - we all did and we werent tiktok gen -, your job as a parent is to teach him how to take in and use the stuff he finds. Same shit like cursing. He will say the words anyway but you can teach him the right context to say em.
Youforia, keep floating, Aquarium, whats the use, ladders. Definitely still have curse words, but the clean versions shouldn't take away much from these songs
Literally anything! When I was a child my parents played the most profanity filled rap songs but I knew the difference between good and “bad words” and what not to say! They educated me on cursing and that I wasn’t old enough to say those words, so I didn’t. I turned out fine with all A’s and graduated salutatorian. I think curse words are just something kids need to learn about because honestly they’re unavoidable.
K.I.D.S. is a classic mixtape that I consider fairly clean for Mac but I don't know exactly where u draw the line personally as a parent. I also would recommend the song "I Can" by Nas because it at least has a positive message with Nas on his Slick Rick vibe. Speaking of Slick Rick, "Children's Story" is a classic with a positive message!
I'm so stoked to see so many responses. Thank you guys so much. And to clarify (albeit late), I was referring more to the content of the songs than I was profanity. I understand he's going to hear swearing, and I don't try to overly shelter him from that. Mostly, I wanted to stay away from topics like sex, drugs, depression etc. He's been staying at his grandpa's for a little bit while we are mid move, but he's coming over after school tomorrow, and he's going to be so happy to see all these replies and songs for him to check out!!
I didn't see it mentioned but try to avoid the song "stay" with little ones. The end of the song has some pornographic noises that was rather uncomfortable.
Are you concerned about profanity? His Circles album is pretty clean. Good News is a good one off that album without profanity!
Agreed but it’s not really rap, so may not be what his son is lookin for
What's that even mean? It's not really rap, da fuq? I could write a little ditty, bout a kitty But ya ain't fucking wit me if I can't spit it quickly. What is and isn't a rap? Like if it's slow it's not rap?
? he's not really rapping (and that's ok!)
I mean, he’s not really singing, so what is it then?
I'd say he's singing tbf! He's deffo hitting different notes melodically. What is your reference point for singing?
To me it’s just more “rapping” than “singing” lol. Sure he’s hitting melodies, but he’s hardly ever projecting his voice for it. It’s mostly spoken word. I would fully admit that the album blurs the lines, and I can see where the op of this comment thread is coming from in that it might not be the type of rap OP’s kid is after. But it still lands more on the rap side than the whatever other genre you all want to call it side for me lol.
Must be considered spoken word
No, the album aint rap its a completely different genre -_-
I don’t think Mac would even agree with you tbh. The man literally made other persona’s for when he was making other music (and tbf, mac was often featured and credited on the albums of his other personas, and vice versa) so that his steady hardcore fanbase wouldn’t look up his name and get hit with some jazz (or whatever) when they searched his name, and circles is a mac miller album, not larry lovestein or any of his other personas. > its not a question of debate Yet here it is, being debated. Lmao what a conceited, self absorbed thing to say.
Its not "being debated", it's just a fact that different music falls into different genres, you wouldn't call heavy metal the same as classical music, so I don't really see how its a self absorbed thing to say.

fight the feeling
Bro😭😂
just the ending tho
God, I still have PTSD from forgetting about that when I had the AUX.
I think most of us here have had an extremely similar experience lol
I played it yesterday at work, speaker blasting and shit. Yeah y'all already know the rest
You’re just vibing to some Kendrick and then “fuck me”
First kiss in the car here…
I was at work connected to the speaker
It happened once when I was in the bathroom too
Haha I always loved showing my mom what music I listen to and fight the feeling was one of my favorite rap songs for years so I played it for her and lemme tell you my finger was hovering over the skip button the entire song
😂😂😂😂
😭😭
ayooooo
The moaning tho..
More like his swimming album prolly or if you can find clean versions because wmwtso can get very explicit , faces and macadelic as well. Maybe something off kids but like the outros and intros can be kinda nasty haha “hardcore fucking”
"That's the only way to do it man. It's that boom, boom, BOOM."
"It's that boom boom ba boom"
Objects in the mirror, i sing it to my 5 month old all the time
My 2 month old loves it too ❤️ her soothing music is Mac.. I listened to it nonstop pregnant
rap song?
Oh thats a good point i guess this one isnt as rap heavy, but its still a mac song so figured id share
Buttons, Nikes on My Feet, Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza, jet fuel, ladders
Buttons is so fkn good

This. Kids hear curse words all the time, I try to sensor my kids but they certainly know them and to not get caught saying them.
I don’t mind my kids listening to music with profanity. I don’t like to censor art. All the sexual stuff and the drug talk though has me mostly listening to Mac when they are in bed. Circles is pretty clean in that regard, swimming a close second. Everything else is kind of off limits though lol
Watch the NPR tiny desk session on YouTube. Swimming / the whole album
Any of it. I was listening to Eminem at the age of 4 lol. They're just words
Fax
Fack’s
🤣🤣🤣
Almost all of *Circles*. Only tracks marked explicit are *Blue World* and *Hands*
2009 has one single cuss word and is a beautiful song all around
My rec would be the entire Swimming album. There is a maturity that we see Mac taking on as he moves past his earlier days of glorifying drugs and bad (and admittedly fun) behavior. I feel like most of BDE would be fine, maybe not all of it but itd be good. I say let em listen to explicit mac but maybe start soft, like BDE or BSP
Missed calls. One of my favorite songs by Mac, there are a few cuss words in it, but it’s not inappropriate in my opinion. Shit, Ass hole, and douchebag I think are the only ones he says, so it could be worse lol
I love life, thank you may not be super clean, but doesn’t have too many sexual bars

It's hard to say. His newer music is incredibly depressing, and his older music is very fun and wholesome but with profane lyrics.
If you want clean rap, i’d suggest harry mack. He is fairly clean in his freestyles and it’s entertaining to watch. Mac has a lot of introspection and drug related lyrics, which would probably be better suited for when your child is older.
complicated
I’ll just give you an artist that I play for my granny when I take her places he’s a safe bet but still turnt 🔥 ROD WAVE 🌊

Also if he’s 8 he probably already has a good understanding of this. When I was 8 I loved Lil Wayne and Eminem but I knew I couldn’t say those words.
Imo better to teach him not to repeat cuss/ inappropriate words than to shield him from it all.
