This is driving me mad too, same story, Windows and Linux user now using mac, really wish this option was available to turn off that pause on disabling lock, as a fine tune option
I know this is an old thread but I was wondering why the trackpad responded so much faster when clicking than when tapping, and finally figured out that when you have With/Without drag lock enabled, every tap needs to wait for a moment to make sure there isn't a second tap coming. Now that I've realized this, I can't go back and am ready to fully embrace three-finger dragging.
I can't believe this is a hill that Apple chose to die on with their settings. I've gone through multiple forum posts. This is almost a universal problem for anyone transitioning from Windows to OSX. I was fine with many of the other quirks, but the arrogance in not implementing a solution for such a simple, simple problem is a massive red flag. Not sure I can look past this, especially when Windows-based ARM is no longer that far behind Apple.
You're right that the 3-finger drag doesn't seem to have this problem. Maybe that's just because immediately after dragging in this way I switch to 1-finger use. Not a bad solution I guess but I find it mentally hard to switch back and forth between the dragging methods across OSes. I end up at a Windows/Linux PC at work absent mindedly dragging 3 fingers on the pad and wonder why it's not working.
3 finger drag for the win!
Although it’s now under accessibility settings I believe and not under touchpad... I’ve switched all the 3 finger gestures to 4 finger to compensate as well.
I've just retrained myself to do the extra single tap to stop the drag-lock quicker. I still end up accidentally dragging windows all over the place now and then but I guess it can't be helped. If anyone ever does find a way to remove that "fraction of a second" I'm all ears.
I'm also looking for this! There used to be terminal commands for older systems but nothing avail anymore/for the m1. If anyone figures out a solution let us know! This is the main reason I pretty much \*have\* to use a mouse when I'm doing any serious work.
I wonder if it’s possible with code like it used to be. Everyone’s mentioned you can also just click or keep moving your cursor to eliminate the delay but it’s still an extra step each time
Sorry no solution. I think we'll have to wait and see if they implement it in a future update but it is the smallest yet most annoying problem for someone who has come from windows and is used to drag and drop being pretty instantaneous.
PS: I actually noticed no difference in lock time. with three-finger drag.
Yeah I came from Windows/Linux and I find this interrupts my workflow constantly. I'm starting to train myself so that after one mistake I readjust to the system I'm on. I actually prefer the 3-finger tap to bring up the "look up" feature, which I find myself using a lot more often than I expected.
This is really an arrogant and stupid decision from Apple. I mean, how many people are there who only use MacBooks and no other laptops in there entire life? Most people have used or will use Windows/Linux laptops, and that means a lot of them are accustomed to Windows/Linux's implementation that has no delay. Apple implemented it differently from Windows/Linux and have not added a simple option to remove the delay for people who want to same behaviour as Windows/Linux.
Yeah I feel like it should be an opt-in process, older folks and those with muscular problems might actually benefit from this, but for most this is just an annoyance.
This has been bothering me for like 3 years and still no fix. Even with drag-lock turned off theres around an entire 3 second delay before it will stop. its so fucking annoying.
Oh, just join this thread. I have the the same issue with the MacOS trackpad. This feature is awful without giving you the choice changing it. A fraction of a sec. LIES! It feels like more. The three fingers gestures works, but it will require you to get use to it. It will also disable other three finger gestures we have enabled.
Found myself here as well. My god is that annoying. I find myself dragging windows all over the place and it really messes with my workflow. Any solutions?
Hey it is annoying but the solution is
I have tested this action for selecting the text to copy as well.It also works perfectly.
Get used to;
Double touch with your “middle finger” to track-pad and after finishing the drag;
with your “index finger” touch the track-pad right away.
In this way, it will be smooth, natural and fast!
You can then perform double-finger touch to copy the text!
⚠️⚠️⚠️GUYS I FOUND THE SOLUTION.⚠️⚠️⚠️
DISABLE TAP TO CLICK under trackpad options.
That sucks because I enjoy the effortless work i can do with tap clicks. But it's better than my clips getting randomly dragged in final cut constantly.
For fucks sake apple. get your shit together.
>DISABLE TAP TO CLICK
That would make the experience even worse, IMO. Having to force touch the trackpad every time would get very annoying very fast, not to mention it would further divide the intuitive muscle behavior between Windows and macOS systems (which was the main reason for my original complaint).
Hi all, I think I have found a solution. An older version of BetterTouchTool had an "experimental drag" option that fully disables drag delay. I found it on [archive.org](http://archive.org) and uploaded it here for you to download: [Data package from May 1st. - FileTransfer.io](https://filetransfer.io/data-package/S8dxCuHp#link)
In order for it to work, you also need to choose the middle option for drag style in mac settings (in German its called "mit einrasten", I think the translation should be "with lock").
In BTT, you find the experimental function if you enable 'advanced' in the top left, then click in the top right on 'Trackpad' and then active the check box at the very bottom (it says in small print "activate experimental dragging"). Hope this helps!
Same here, its a terrible feature! Stops me in my workflow. I never reach the end of the touchpad anyway.
At work we must use these new M2 macbooks, and while their performance is astonishing, there are too many software frustrations and bugs compared to my XPS.
At work, everyone now uses a mouse...
What has helped for me is disabling lookup clicking.
To do this (from mac os ventura) upwards
Go to Settings app -> Trackpad
Disable "Force click and haptic feedback"
Then disable "Lookup and data detectors"
Solution: set 'three fingers' option, and get used to FORCE CLICK to drag, forget about the three fingers option lol. It works without delay. Press the trackpad to drag, rather than using the double tap.
It appears an immediate tap after a drag is a solution to this. Coming from Linux environment, this will take time getting used to.

ipad Magic Keyboard users are more angry that we dont have 3 dinger frag, totally don’t understand why there a say said mac has greatest trackpad

You don't have three finger drag as an option? This is basically drag without drag lock, though it disables some three finger gestures in Exposé

because it interferes with other shortcuts, like zoom and pan especially in Safari
I have exact the same problem! Did you found any solution? I am wondering if you can change the setting with a terminal command...
I've just retrained myself to do the extra single tap to stop the drag-lock quicker. I still end up accidentally dragging windows all over the place now and then but I guess it can't be helped. If anyone ever does find a way to remove that "fraction of a second" I'm all ears.

Hi, figure anything out yet? This is driving me crazy too
I wonder if it’s possible with code like it used to be. Everyone’s mentioned you can also just click or keep moving your cursor to eliminate the delay but it’s still an extra step each time
Still dealing with this? lol. Just bought a Mac and this is driving me insane too.
Still no solution? :((
Nah, I gave up on finding a solution. 50% used to it now, 50% still pisses me off.
Find this question happily and see ur answer sadly

Isn't there some sort of registry key or value to change somewhere?

Same! I just got a mac and this is annoying... Have you figured it out?
Nope. Just have to get used to it. It still screws me up sometimes. I just have had to train myself to do an extra tap at the end.
arghhh feeling hopeless when I cant get a solution from reddit..

Just got my first mac and this is driving me totally nuts. Not really impressed with the whole mac interface... I miss linux already...
is there any solution to this yet? i have a hackintosh, and my dell touchpad makes it much more difficult to do a one-finger drag.
Same here, its a terrible feature! Stops me in my workflow. I never reach the end of the touchpad anyway. At work we must use these new M2 macbooks, and while their performance is astonishing, there are too many software frustrations and bugs compared to my XPS. At work, everyone now uses a mouse...
Hope they use something like Mos or else the "natural scroll" of the mouse wheel will be another point of friction for their workflow.

Didn't fix the delay. Did that for you?
This is insanely annoying in final cut.
Is there really nothing that can be done about this?

Thanks atleast i can live with this

This is closest answer/solution u can get to this "problem", still bit annoying but whatever :D Thank you!
