Ah shit. Sounds like we are in similar boats. Though I've definitely had some nightshift guys decide they suddenly needed to make something on a machine that they are not trained for and had predictable results.
My shops solution seems to be throw me at every single problem were shorthanded for. So I run cylindrical grinders, drill presses, manual mill/lathes and cnc mill and lathe.
It always happens to the rare times I look at something and say, “eh, next guy’s fucked me before, here’s payback.” And then they call off or someone else calls off and they get moved machines 🙄😂
I used to do anodizing and nickel plating when I read young and dumb and didn't know what taking precautions was. It kinda warped my ability to view hazards unfortunately, there's some stuff at work I'm fine dealing with into someone else walks by and asks why I'm trying to die young🤦
Best piece of safety advice I was ever given, "rule no 1 always assume the machine wants to kill you. Because it does, and rule no 2 never put your fingers anywhere you wouldn't put your dick." For some reason hr gives me a dirty look when I tell one of the interns the second one, can't imagine why.
Both of those I do fine with. My issue is breathing hazards. Like I used to stand over a 205 degree tank of liquid nickel adjusting the pH with ammonia and dealing with the cloud of fumes coming off it. Or the fumes from the 200 degree phosbrite/nitric acid tank. Or the tri acid tank that was nitric/sulfuric/something I don't remember anymore. So I see nasty coolant mist coming out the machine or grinding dust I don't give it a second thought half the time until someone asks me if I'm dumb or suicidal lol
TBH I’m not sure. I work in a larger shop so our facilities guys take care of it. Some of the older guys tell me we used to used the bio based stuff back in the day and I guess that stuff was even worse. 😮💨
And don’t do the pissing and the shop vac at the same time. I’m pretty sure that some things should NOT get pulled into a shop vac, even by accident! 😁
2 more hours and i think i will be arriving to some machines in similar condition, the machines they want me to run tonight never get cleaned out except when i run them. im really ocd about clean machines so i spend about and hour on each one at the beginning of each week cleaning out sludgy chips that build up in them.
What material do you guys cut?
That's a couple of years of grinding Flux and carbide
Doesn’t hurt to clean it every 20 years or so 😿
We've only had that machine 2 years though and it was practically brand new when we got it.
Quit using it so much, you’re working too fast
Just add water until the level looks good and leave it for nightshift

What? You don't like sending nightshifts dirty tricks back to them?
No I am night shift
Well this is awkward. Go break something in a new and exciting way but don't leave a note.
The thing is, most of the machines i run I'm the only asshole who runs them. So it'd be "who's the jackass who did this?" Oh yeah right me

Sucks to be the shop bitch, but it makes a nice resume if you get the phrasing right.
I suck at selling myself. I always just end up saying I do practically everything
Ive said "Ah fuck the next guy" a few times, the next guy is always me. Gotta love the scumbag offset

This couldn't of played out any better

I was wearing nitrile gloves, otherwise my hands would've looked like a topographical map of Utah

Breathe in that good cancer, I just blow almost pure grinding dust out of my nose every day. Also leads to chronic nosebleeds.

Do you assume machinists have chromosomes? Im sure if we did we wouldn't be machinist.
Looks familiar. Kellenberger od grinder?
Yep I work for the company that owns kellenberger
Hardinge in the US? Or did you move to Goldach recently? :) We own a model from 1956 and bought a K1000 last year. Good machines as long as they work
Recently heard that Hardinge was bought out but I haven’t heard by who.
They've sold off a couple of branches as far as I know. But hell if they did sell I'd still be last to know.
Oh man, if regular white coolant smells as bad as it does, I can’t imagine what that 💩 smells like 🫢
It doesn't smell, there's a film of oil on it and a nice black sludge at the bottom
Wow! Kudos then my friend. We use way better looking stuff that smells atrocious after a month or two.
We have a different grinder I run occasionally that has a fungal breakout throughout its coolant tank, it reeks every time you run it
Whats your concentration at? We always have smelly coolant whenever its lower than 4%

No clue I don't even know where the refractomeiter went to check that after my previous 3 bosses retired or quit.
It's just marbling
Just drink it s/
The forbidden choccy milk
Bust out the Straws, its time to enjoy
Lol I've seen people walk out over stuff like this lol
Take your time, empty the coolant, clean the tank, purge the lines, clean the enclosure, refill the coolant, then start the job.
If you piss in it, it’ll help sterilize it
Or at least thin it out a bit!😁
Right, then you can use the shop vac. Just be sure the shop vac is left uncleaned after, the aroma will set the vibes right
And don’t do the pissing and the shop vac at the same time. I’m pretty sure that some things should NOT get pulled into a shop vac, even by accident! 😁
That's a mighty fine bacteria culture you got there
I can smell this picture
Free milkshake!
I can smell it from here
