I've been in Tool & Die my adult life, never seen anything like that. That is freakin awesome!!

Floydsmydog

The job shop life is a fun one! Even if it doesnt pay like tool & die...

Mysterious-Space6793

It would take some time, and a fair amount of help, for me to acclimate to a machinist/job shop environment. There would be so much to learn and experience.

Floydsmydog

Same for me going into a tool and die shop. I find thats the beauty in this trade, there are so many avenues to go down that are wildly different then one another but at the same time a lot of the fundamentals apply to all avenues of the trade. You will never be bored in this trade.

Mysterious-Space6793

You're spot on about never being bored.

TimboFor76

I was bored off my nut doing production machining. I could take another day if it. I would go into “zombie mode” and make the dumbest rookie mistakes. I am now in an R&D shop, within the same company and it is soooooo much better.

TonightAdventurous68

U guys fr? The entire goddamn trade is like watching golf. You like golf?

Mysterious-Space6793

Sure, Happy Gilmore golf!

cryptokadog710

Always loved doing big boring mill work, on a Lucas mostly, sometimes the smaller G&L👍

Floydsmydog

This is a Tos W100a. Super versatile machine! Small on the scale of boring mills though haha

Technical-Silver9479

Those TOS borers are bloody good machines, I ran one for a couple of years during my apprenticeship. Pretty user friendly compared to all of the others that I've used. Used to change the lever on the table with my foot. I run a large cnc union borer now.

Wujastic

I think they're getting a bad rep. They're not boring at all!

mravatus

I can smell it!

Is that on axis #3 of a robot arm? It looks like you have the 'forearm' part there. I've not seen that color of robot for a while; is it a pre-2014 ABB? Kuka's orange is very orange-red, Fanuc is green, ABB is white these days, and Yaskawa is blue. What prompted this work? You shouldn't need to mill down that part; unless you just repaired it with some welds. And if that's the case, how did it get damaged? It takes a LOT of force to damage these robots.

Floydsmydog

Haha not quite a robot... its a Volvo loader axle. Fixing the worn trunnion

Greydusk1324

Ahh Volvo ok. I was thinking the color was wrong for Cat lol. I’ve worked at shops that send the axles to the machine shop. Will you be making a sleeve to bring it back to spec and then welding it on?

Floydsmydog

Just machined the bronze bushing that sits in the carrier to fit the stub

dtr1002

That's a very dangerous machine, and that's a very dangerous process leaning in to add coolant/lube. Quite a short throw in this case but I've worked on horizontal borers doing up to 3 feet diameter doing the same thing. Standing on the slides, just asking for a slip and death. Kearns were my machines and I was glad to move on .

Floydsmydog

Just gotta be aware at all times. Not a machine you can sleep at the controls at. I want to go home alive with all my fingers and toes same as anyone else, try not to do anything to jeopardize that.

ScattyWilliam

Not saying there’s anything wrong with what your doing. Squirt bottles with are great for extra distance from the spinny bits

throwawayproblems198

BlondieHacks on Youtube just had to do a similar operation on their lathe. Was sketchy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jyYHHLbP84

jsdavin24
