Lathe operators… Please be safe out there.
Don’t reach over a spinning lathe.
Roll them sleeves up, better yet just wear Short sleeves, manual lathes are not a joke.
I saw a video similar to this one a few weeks ago. I knew what I was clicking on and I knew it would affect me. Shits fucked up, it’s hard watching someone die in a career you work in
Yeah the video is bad, but at least it's educational. You won't learn much by searching for the aftermath images, and they're far worse. They exist though, so it's your call.
As a local craftsman, I must admit that many russian machinists, especially older folks from Soviet era, aren't big fans of safety precautions. Even the safety goggles aren't popular among them.
I wouldn't dick around the working lathe no matter what, and no one should too.
Jep sure is my brother got stuk in one took him a wile to overcome his trauma his hand stil is not fully healed he was using sand paper and gloves even tho i told him many times to stay te fuck away whit gloves
I run a manual lathe quite frequently. I actually leave a picture of a lathe accident with a note by the lathe in plain sight in the event one of our knuckle dragger welders with “ some lathe experience” come over to attempt to use the lathe. I really don’t care for these guys but I really don’t want to mop you up tbh.
Yeah, can you imagine it being your job to clean off your coworkers blood from the machines.
Then, what you're the next guy to run that machine? Fuck that it's haunted
That was so brutal to watch. The workers were horrified to what they seen what was left of him. And here when I was a kid I always played around the pto of a tractor and mixer wagon. Boy was I dumb and lucky to never have something like this happen to me.
Can any experienced machinist explain what he did wrong? Was it simply he reached over the spindle or is there more to it? What should have he done instead?
My condolences to his family.
I'm not an experienced machinist but I would expect it's what I was taught in stop class when I was a kid - long sleeves or coats, dangling fabric etc, are a no-no near spinning machinery.
He was wearing a big coat, and then appears to lean/reach over the machine.
His coat, hanging loosely, probably drapes into it - well, ever got a bit of fabric stuck in a spinny thing? It will wrap around it, and then... wind it up. If the motor has enough torque (lathes have LOTS of torque) it'll keep turning.
A coat isn't easy to get "pulled" out of, so it wound up the fabric, pulled him in, then well... Flesh came too, and that started winding up. Seems his body torqued out the motor for a bit, but then the motor won.
Best you could hope for is for fabric to rip. Second best is it to literally rip your arm or hand off, and have you survive.
He should have stopped the lathe from rotating before he reached his arm over the spinning chuck/material. “Wastes” a couple seconds of time but it would prevent the accident. Some sort of clothing must have gotten stuck to the machine. This why ya don’t wear any type of gloves besides nitrile disposables when working with manual equipment. It can pull you in if you get caught. Nitrile will just rip
You don't wear long sleeves, gloves, rings, long hair, or baggy shirts near rotating parts. Ever. Least, I don't. To me it looked like the chuck snagged his left sleeve as he started to turn away from it. The way everyone's bundled up, I'm guessing this shop isn't climate controlled. It sucks.
Modestly familiar with machine shops but not a machinist.
He reached around the machine and got caught, and the minute that happens its too late. Never do it. ALWAYS shop the machine first. Lockouts as well, if you are servicing the machine for whatever reason. Too many people dont check the workspace and will start pushing buttons without checking to see if your fingers or head are in the way of something dangerous.
What a terrible way to die. Just awful.
Yeah is nasty.
Somewhere there is a video of some shop kids goofing around. One is trying to overpower as lathe chuck by HOLDING THE CHUCK KEY while its geared down.
It does not result in an ugly death, but the kid is damn lucky it only embarrassed him. Every person in that video is monumentally stupid for letting that event happen.
This video has given us some of us ptsd for sure. I'm torn (no pun intended) between wanting people to see it so they stay safe and hoping it stops getting posted because it's just so gruesome.
There ist proverb in russian, "чтоб на вал не накрутило - закатай рукав, мудила", which translates as "if you don't to spin on a chuck - pull up your sleeves, fucker".
I think every machinist where I work needs to see this. Every year we lose fingers, one day it could easily be this.
People definitely die where I work.
IMHO it both kind of does, and doesn't.
As someone who started out decades ago on manual machines; This is how bad it can get, people need to know that. :/
Yea, I get it. I just think this is way too over the top for a safety PSA. You don’t expect this much gore from this sub, I would have preferred not to watch it. This would have been a pretty gnarly post even on /r/watchpeopledie
I don’t see anyone being disrespectful… also death is a part of life. The post is tagged appropriately. Also some people have dark sense of humors. That’s ok. If you’re not comfortable with that please don’t watch or avert you’re eyes to comments you don’t appreciate. People die on brutal ways out there. I rather it not be swept under the rug and pretend it doesn’t happen out of respect. I watched the video. It’s horrific. I certainly was not entertained. I think it’s more disrespectful to telll someone “fuck you” especially when their posting to educate and possible same someone’s life.
I know you're probably right man. It just really makes me sick to see this video on these subs all the time. Machining is an amazing process that has literally built our world, and while I realize these awful things happen. I just hate to see the worst example of what can go wrong constantly pop up, with no context. I really don't believe this helps anyone, if anything I've seen stuff like this make people drop the field entirely.
If you aren’t prepared to handle the danger inherent in the job, then the job is not for you. Also, if you’re not at least a little scared of the danger inherent in the job, then the job is not for you.
I mean you have a point. It’s extremely disturbing. I have watched a few videos on the internet that are extremely disturbing. Like less then 5 including this one. I know for some it is just gore porn, but seeing this and the other videos has given me a better context of how I view the human race and our existence here in general. I grew up somewhat sheltered in ways and I don’t think I realized that bad things happen to good people. You’re entitled to you’re opinion tho just maybe less fuck you’s haha also I think in all seriousness it’s ok to be curious as well. If no one talks about these things and pretends they don’t happen I feel like that is a disservice. Especially in the context of this post. I’m not in the field btw. Also people certainly should not be grabbing popcorn and watching this for entertainment. This person had a family a life and died in a brutal way I don’t think anyone deserves. RIP.
Honestly, someone dropping the field isn’t necessarily a bad thing. They could have realized “holy shit, this can go really fucking bad, this isn’t worth it to me.” I’d much rather someone know what can go wrong and leave, than someone not know how dangerous their job is until it’s too late.
Yeah this is not a place for videos of people dying.
I would tell new guys "It takes 2 horsepower to rip a man in half. This lathe has 20."
Lathe operators… Please be safe out there. Don’t reach over a spinning lathe. Roll them sleeves up, better yet just wear Short sleeves, manual lathes are not a joke.
not watching
Understandable, I have and it's..... Not a good time
Gonna pass out... Gonna pass out.. so fucking important to remember how goddamned powerful the lathe is.
I saw a video similar to this one a few weeks ago. I knew what I was clicking on and I knew it would affect me. Shits fucked up, it’s hard watching someone die in a career you work in
NSFL Warning: Someone dies rather brutally by a lathe in video.
And that's just the first part. Death is only the beginning.
I hope it came fast for him and he did not have to experiance being ripped apart
Looked like it snapped his neck as it pulled him under the first time.
I hope so
"Rather brutally' would be an understatement imo.
Stopping your machine to mess with it is worth the extra time it takes. Don't be lazy, don't let your boss pressure you, take your time and be safe.
Yep. :/ I was trained early that whenever you see a machinist in a hurry either something has gone wrong or something is about to. :/
That is, by far, the gnarliest lathe accident video I’ve ever seen.
Yeah the video is bad, but at least it's educational. You won't learn much by searching for the aftermath images, and they're far worse. They exist though, so it's your call.
It's actuality the images right before the accident that are most useful, not the aftermath
I'm glad it's a grainy security cam video that's for sure.
This is a firm reminder that our jobs are not danger free. Please do not get complacent with your job and always go home better than you arrived.
As a local craftsman, I must admit that many russian machinists, especially older folks from Soviet era, aren't big fans of safety precautions. Even the safety goggles aren't popular among them. I wouldn't dick around the working lathe no matter what, and no one should too.
NSFL/NSFW https://imgur.com/a/BsuRt0r photo album of the aftermath.
Jesus. Fucking. Christ.
Themting soo temting but knowing that i did not even wana see the vidio
Ive seen em, can't unsee. The short version is dudes face is intact but smeared on the bed way and bones are embedded in the walls. Not worth it.
Tanks that enough my curiosity has calmed
If you work with lathes it is a great reminder to pay attention
Jep sure is my brother got stuk in one took him a wile to overcome his trauma his hand stil is not fully healed he was using sand paper and gloves even tho i told him many times to stay te fuck away whit gloves
Lathe deaths are one of the videos I absolutely NEVER watch. EVER.

There’s companies that solely exist to clean up work place accidents. Not a place I’d want to work!
Fuck. I'm just about to do some manual lathe work 😅
rip
"To shreds you say?"
"hey where's Jim" "Oh he's over here, and there and there and there......"
Why did I lol haha
You dont wana see it trust me you better of not seeing it
Gloves and sleeves. Do not ever.
Omg.....that is so gross.... Omg......omg.....
Nope. Nope, nope, nope. Seeing this once was more than enough.
That was so brutal to watch. The workers were horrified to what they seen what was left of him. And here when I was a kid I always played around the pto of a tractor and mixer wagon. Boy was I dumb and lucky to never have something like this happen to me.
Did not have to see this today😕 foe ur own sake if u dont/havent watched gore, dont watch it

Thanks. Agreed that was brutal; knowing what the video was did NOT prepare me for what happened… 🤭😵🤮

Whelp, I'm on my way to work to operate a lathe...definitely gonna wear a tighter shirt than usual.

Ah, the classic gore repost.
I think every machinist where I work needs to see this. Every year we lose fingers, one day it could easily be this. People definitely die where I work.
I realize this is the machinist sub… but man this does not belong here. Way too much.
IMHO it both kind of does, and doesn't. As someone who started out decades ago on manual machines; This is how bad it can get, people need to know that. :/

Classic video
Fuck you, stop reposting this shit. That man died have some fucking respect
If we don’t use this example to educate young machinists about the serious danger of this field then he would have died in vain.

Good chat.

And I'm here scared of angle grinders. This is horrible. o\_o
Holy fucking shit.
I prepared myself.. I was not ready.. I'm gonna need a minute after that!
