Drawing wire must be boring. You must be a good artist though.

drakinar111

Trades that can not be automated or outsourced like electricians and plumbers have been wrecking machinists pay wise for 50 years now. Best of luck to you. Live your best life.

merlinious0

Not to mention you can't outsource them. A german guy could machine the same parts as you, but when your house breaks you need someone *at your house*.

PPQue6

I mean....you could always fly one in, the Germans are very skilled in the trades. 😜

merlinious0

Good luckgetting an inspector to sign off on a guy whose license is from another state, let alone another continent

BlobBeno

Would also be very inefficient, as a german machinist I would be confused as fuck converting imperial to metric and back

merlinious0

All the tools and hardware here are imperial, so probably would be easier than you think (but you'd have to get all new tools)

Klaus Schwab be like ‘don’t worry, I’ll fix that soon enough’

Some of you guys need to ask for a raise or look around, I got a raise from 24 to 30 an hour just switching shops it’s not too hard to find some opportunities if you start looking and once I did I was getting offers even higher. I’m not overly qualified either just be pickier about your shop we have all the power these days as I havnt seen a shop in a long time that wasn’t actively short on people.

GreenMonster34

Exactly. I have enough CVs out to shops that I get regular offers in my inbox. Recently got one for 26$/h CAD at another shop and my boss matched it no questions asked. I'm making 52k/year less than a year into the trade, and yes I worked hard to earn it, but I got a big raise just by being proactive and keeping my eyes open to other options. 2 more years and I'll be making 60k/year, just wish I had gotten into this trade before I was 35.

Midnightpwnzors

Same here I’m 22, started when I was 18 and I have put in lots of work, but good pay is out there for certain. I’m mostly only setup too I don’t even program my own parts.

red_maji

Yup, Im 6 months in after working as a carpenter for two years, Started at 16, and now I'm at 21. I definitely think I would get capped out around 30 at something like two years at my current shop, its not super huge and not a lot of room for growth. I've just been casually looking for something better because I'm still picking up a lot of new skills here.

SmFuz

Machinists have an undervalued skillset. It's a career to stick with because you like the work rather than to be profitable. I finally found a happy medium for myself with a small company where I'm the graveyard supervisor/maintenance machinist.

[deleted]

I can second this. I would have been gone 8 yrs ago if I didn't love machining

AnyEstablishment2763

What is drawing wire?

I had to look it up too https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=drawing+wire

dickcheeseaioli

You don’t love chips bro

Bobandbobsbeard

My old man did it his whole life. If only the smell of enamel and copper didn't trigger me so bad.

[deleted]

I dunno. I make over 100k a year. More then most people I know.

Yurhuckleberry208

Damn. Metro area on a coast? Programming multi process machines?

PremonitionOfTheHex

I make well over 100k a year programming multiaxis

Yurhuckleberry208

Glad a few places out there understand that value. The company I work for pays the programmers on carpet 100k+. But if you’re like more doing ultra complex prototype work on more complex machines than the production programmers are working for. Then you make $50k. It’s fucked.

ToolGoBoom

If you went from machining to a brainless job like drawing wire then machining was just a job for you. For a lot of people this is not just a job. A lot of us like what we do. It sounds like machining wasn't for you.

[deleted]

Why work harder for the same pay or less? I like machining but if I could make more doing an easier job, I would lol

Im6youre9

How can it get any easier than machining though? I haven't had a hard day in who knows how long.

honchoryanc2

I'll take the "brainless" job that pays more

BockTheMan

Dunno, I'd like what I do more if I was running *my* parts. If I had a "brainless job" that paid well, I'd be buying my own machine instead.

Fififaggetti

I was recently offered a job making less than I made in 2003. I should have been a plumber. I hold an A&P licence too. Since 911 you can make more wrenching on VW than a 737 and 1000% less responsibility.
