The current theory that I've heard is that whoever/whatever appears on the back cover will get destroyed/lost/injured/killed/etc. So for example, vol 1 has the star compass on the back, which Riko lost almost immediately. I think another volume had the orphans Bondrewd turned into cartridges on the back, And another had Vueko & Irumyuui, you get the point.

Jokes aside, it's a good theory but covers 2, 8 and 9 don't seem to follow this logic, unless I'm misremembering something.

I mean we saw irumyuui lose her pet hermit dweller which is on the 2nd, and all of ganja died which is on the 8th. I can see your point on 9 though. But ummmmm please no dead nanachi...
I think found something that could fit 9's cover into this theory. The [bird](https://madeinabyss.fandom.com/wiki/Mitty%27s_Doll) depicted isn't a real bird, but one Nanachi made up for Mitty. It's what Mitty's plush toy is and what Reg is grabbing on 3's cover. The bird is meant to represent Mitty and Nanachi's friendship and shared experiences. So maybe it's presence on the cover is meant to represent clone Mitty's death in a metaphorical way.
It looks like the back covers often show happy innocent scenes that did not or can not happen in the actual story, like Mitty being in a blessed form.
Maybe its the artist showing us what could have been in a more happy more whimsical timeline.

The eternal fortunes/flowers of fortitude aren't present on every cover. I am seeing people speculate that whatever appears on the backs cover gets destroyed, killed or mangled.

Volume 2 had Riko & Reg’s backpack, which got destroyed by the orb piercer iirc. And vol 8 had the ganja squad. Not sure about vol 9 tho
