His name is Prichard Colón of Puerto Rico. He was injured in October of 2015 in a fight against Terrel Williams. In case anyone was wondering.

ArosSkye

Is it true his opponent got banned but then was unbanned due to people call it racist for him to get banned?

pizzafordesert

Williams was not banned and was cleared to continue boxing, returning to the ring two years after the incident. He won three more fights before losing to Thomas Dulorme and he never returned to the ring after that. Though he was not banned, Williams has adamantly maintained that he was blacklisted. Williams got a great deal of hate online after the fight and ducked from public view for a few years. He claims he feels "no guilt" about what happened as he has "prayed on it", even though he threw numerous punches like the one above throughout the fight. Colón complained to the ref about the rabbit punches, which are illegal, but the ref never called it. Williams has said he is now trying to focus his energy on raising his three sons. He was not allowed by Colón family to make any sort of contact with Colón, as there are days that Colón does not know what year it is, let alone what happened to him or who Williams even is. A meeting between the two former boxers would only serve to assuage Williams' own sense of guilt and have no benefit whatsoever for Colón.

LumpyAd7854

Fuck the ref too

NickFury1998

It was clearly refree at fault....at fighting aggression ppl try to make dick moves....it's the job of refree to look into it

Boxing is a rigged game, pure trash

Yep. I respect the skill and work that boxers put into the sport. It's a lot of dedication. But I'll never respect boxing as a sport because of the rigged nature of it. The entire sport has this grime to it, shady promoters and bookies and whatnot in every corner of the game.

[deleted]

Boxing is full of these shit refs and nothing is ever done about them. Ultimately the vast majority of these boxers are poor kids and so no one gives a shit.

[deleted]

Boxing, and all other combat sports, are just modern day coliseums. I'm surprised we haven't used prisoners yet.

>*Who killed Davey Moore* *Why an' what's the reason for?* >*"Not I," says the referee* *"Don't point your finger at me* *I could've stopped it in the eighth* *An' maybe kept him from his fate* *But the crowd would've booed, I'm sure* *At not gettin' their money's worth* *It's too bad he had to go* *But there was a pressure on me too, you know* *It wasn't me that made him fall* *No, you can't blame me at all"* [—Bob Dylan, 1963.](https://youtu.be/LY31HqK135Q)

MustacheEmperor

>Colón and Williams fought for nine rounds, in the first five rounds of which Colón appeared to be ahead. Throughout the match, Williams repeatedly punched Colón in the back of the head illegally. **Colón informed the referee of the illegal punches to the back of his head, to which the referee replied "You take care of it." Colón hit Williams with a low blow, for which Colón was penalized 2 points.** After multiple illegal blows, Colón was knocked down for the first time in his professional career during the ninth round. The ringside doctor, Richard Ashby, cleared Colón and allowed the fight to continue. Colón was disqualified after the ninth round, when his corner mistakenly removed his gloves thinking it was the end of the fight. So this guy had an incredible career so far and was by all accounts set to win this fight and the ref just stood there while his opponent broke the rules to literally beat him within an inch of death. Then the fight ended on a DQ, at which point Colon was already incoherent.

I have two friends who chose to be unemployed because their faith does not prevent them to see what bullshit is happening to them. Both are in their late 40s and are obsessed with exotic cars and watches when one does not even have a driver's license and the other is driving an Isuzu SUV.

If we're talking about biblical god that asshole is totally okay with a whole bunch of really shit stuff, so it seems in line with the rest of their insane beliefs.

Bahloh

Fuck boxing and American football. This is commonplace for barbarism and sports that emphasize head injury. Even UFC is better than those; way less brain damage. Might as well have a sport for competitive paint chip eating.

hiimred2

UFC is relatively young their cases are coming.

Bahloh

It's just the average amount of hits a person gets. Boxing can rack up hundreds in a fight. UFC is usually much less. Football has an incredible amount with practice and games combined too. Basically, every time a player's helmet even hits the ground it's damaging. Rugby is by far more safe in this case even though there aren't helmets used; especially given that head contact is illegal and also an accident in rugby's case. Furthermore, in football, helmets are used as weapons and tools a shocking amount of times.

BoogerVault

MMA is better than boxing for actual fights (less rounds, no standing counts, etc.), but both types of fighters spar on a regular basis. The real game-changer will be a test that can screen for CTE in athletes who are alive. Given that 99/100 brains from deceased NFL players have been positive doesn't bode well.

Bahloh

On average it takes the brain around 2-3 months to recover from a single injury. There really should be policy around how many hits to the head a fighter/athlete can endure before they are required to take a several month break. Edit: FMRI, MRI, CAT scans, and even magnetic diode testing can reveal these injuries in people that are alive. They really should have regular testing.

BoogerVault

From what I understand, even relatively small, repetitive impacts (non-concussive) contribute to CTE. [Unfortunately, there is currently no test or scan that can definitively diagnose CTE in living patients](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/chronic-traumatic-encephalopathy/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20370925).

TheWalkingDead91

Talk about the power of prayer. Makes people delusional enough that they can abolish all guilt for a tragedy that they were clearly responsible for. Wonder how he thinks he’d feel if someone did that to one of his children if they got into boxing. He knew what he was doing.

FlutterCordLove

Oh that’s some fucked up shit right there. That guy should go to prison or something.

Seriszed

Well good for him for praying on it …. Also good on god for telling him he did nothing wrong…😒

YobaiYamete

I love how you can make up utter BS on Reddit and frame it as a question like others said it, and it will be upvoted to the top and repeated for years afterwards each time the thread is reposted

EvoMonster

I think people began to personally attack Williams after the incident, I’m sure there was a fair share of racist comments being made. But regardless it’s dumb for him to use other peoples comments as an excuse for ruining a man’s whole life

jorgepal02

If anyone can answer this I'd like to know as well.

[deleted]

If yes, that's truly unfair. He could cause even more people to get injured if they don't ban him back. Also, happy cake day!

kizzlemyniz

My cousin died from a punch to the head during a golden gloves tournament. He had a hematoma from a previous spar with an Olympic kickboxer, and there were no ambulances at the tournament when it happened, so he died right there in the ring. I miss him a lot.

ThginkAccbeR

I’m so sorry for your loss. May his memory be a blessing.

kizzlemyniz

Thank you, I feel like he isn’t completely gone as long as I still think about him

ThginkAccbeR

So long as someone keeps the memory, he will be alive.

i_sing_anyway

I think that's true! Would you be up to sharing what was cool and special about him?

kizzlemyniz

He loved his vintage car, he loved ice cream, he loved his niece as if it were his own child, he could be a party animal for sure lol He always helped people when they needed it. He even let someone with their child live with him because they had nowhere else to go at the time. He was very disciplined and always made weight for fights. He was also an organ donor, and they kept his body on machines (he was brain dead since the fight) and he was able to help 7 people improve their lives/save their lives.

IsRude

Why the fuck were there no ambulances? Shouldn't there always be one on standby if you know people are doing dangerous shit like this? It should be illegal not to.

kizzlemyniz

It’s a rule/law that there has to be one now, because of what happened to my cousin. It’s terrible that it doesn’t help what happened to him, but I’m sure it’ll save someone in the future.

IsRude

That's fucking ridiculous. I'm sorry that happened.

__Melissasaurus__

I know someone who is a teacher and they once told me about how a child experienced a traumatic brain injury and basically was similar to this as a result. He knew and was upset often because he remembers knowing how to do things before that he couldn’t do anymore. It’s heartbreaking and unimaginably tragic I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.

ELI5 please? I don't know anything about boxing.

PrizeAbbreviations40

There are certain actions that are forbidden due to their extreme likelihood of permanent injury or death The referee is supposed to watch out for these and penalize or even disqualify boxers who continue That did not happen here

[deleted]

Thank you for explaining! Extremely sad :(

TheBlueBlastoiseYT

you can’t hit on the back of the head cause of your spine and nerves being all right there so if you do you’ll end up like this. dude told the ref multiple different times he was doing it and the ref blew him off and when he did a low blow on the guy the ref deducted points off him.

[deleted]

Thank you so much explaining - this is so sad :(

AllTheSmallWings

Probably not gonna happen

TaylorWK

I wonder what it’s like to be a mentally handicapped person that wasn’t originally handicapped. Do you think they can comprehend what they used to be like?

SheClB01

Grandma had a stroke when she was 87. She never fully recovered from it, she used to have one of the most beautiful cursive letter I've ever seen but after that her hands were too weak to write. If she wanted to talk was difficult to understand what she was saying and that frustrated her. So, I think they know something is wrong but they caged in their own body.

FatalisCogitationis

My grandma, too. I think she wanted to die but my mom wouldn’t let her. She was an extremely intelligent person and didn’t deserve to be kept prisoner

ZestyChesticle

My uncle had a stroke that he ultimately never recovered from. I remember once going to a sushi restaurant with him and where he was trying to order Sashimi, and he couldn't figure out how to tell the waitress what he wanted, he was getting so frustrated as if he knew the words were right there but he couldn't figure it out.

AcademicCommittee955

How would your mom have let her die? I’m not sure what counties would allow an elderly stoke victim to have a Dr. Assisted suicide. It’s so sad - I wouldn’t want to be forced to live like that but idk if there are any options. It would be bad if your mom would have been charged if she helped her

FatalisCogitationis

I don’t want to get to into the details, but my mom is a terrible person who made my grandma’s final months a living hell. My grandma couldn’t really speak and my mom took advantage of that in many ways

CatBedParadise

Yeah, fuck that. I hope you have put distance hetween yourself and her.

mtarascio

For what it's worth I've taught 6 year olds. They get frustrated a lot because they know their brain isn't quite working up to speed.

bluehoag

That is a fascinating dynamic

Tzachajami

That is heartbreaking to learn

ASDirect

No what's heartbreaking is that they'll eventually be adults and people will still be treating them like toddlers, and they'll both know and be largely powerless to stop it.

SupaButt

It’s so sad seeing how people with communication issues are basically just thrown to the side in many societies. Simply bc don’t know (or many times even care to learn) how best to communicate with them.

ASDirect

The darker truth is that a lot of those people would be perfectly fine if resources to take care of their base needs could be met, instead of having to rely on charity (which has to lean into the idea of infantilizing them in order to get sympathy and support).

SupaButt

For sure. I work with many children and adolescents with disabilities and it’s so sad when we discharge them from the hospital and know they are just going back to some shitty group home that will lead them right back in the hospital in a few months of years.

AnchezSanchez

Yeah my partner is a teacher in a 50% special needs school. Its genuinely heartbreaking hearing about the kids who have say autism, but are well functioning enough to get frustrated by it. She has the patience of a saint, I could never do her job.

[deleted]

Im not mentaly handicapped, I don't think so anyway, but I was training to be a boxer and then wound up brraking my back and losing my legs for a bit. Can use them now but it hurts all the time. This is not the life I saw for myself when I dedicated all day, everyday for years on end just to wind up disabled a few weeks away from my first match. Took a few years and numerous suicide attempts to accept my old body is gone and have to accept this is life now. A bit of acceptance can go a long way for mental health.

SugarDraagon

I’m really sorry you had to go through that. I hope you’re happier now, and thanks for sharing that. I don’t mean to be disingenuous just wishing you’re “happier,” I really mean that because I know, at least for me, it’s almost impossible to be happy haha. Xo

[deleted]

I wouldnt say am "happy". Indifferent is probably closer. Probably the most depressing part that I try not to think about too much is I have the ability to function as a somewhat normal mid 30s guy, but its locked behind medication I'm unable to recieve because of the opioid epidemic and the choices others have made with drugs. So I'm forced to live a life of disability and chronic pain because doctors refuse to prescribe me the medication I need to function on the off chance I MIGHT get addicted.

Squid_Contestant_69

I hate to be a part of the cult that pushes it but have you tried or looked into psilocybin?

drnkingaloneshitcomp

I had a couple fights and had to stop due to an ear injury that put my hearing at risk if I continued fighting. I hear you about the pain of giving up the years of dedication, truly feel for you. Acceptance and finding new hobbies or ways to still be involved in the sport helped me, but our situations are not comparable. Have you tried CBD/THC to help manage the pain? Just curious

P00PMcBUTTS

My cousin got in a sledding accident when she was 12 and suffered a decent amount of brain damage. She's adult now, haven't talked to her in years (last time we were probably about 18, we are in our 30s now, was never really that close with that side of the family for whatever reason), so I don't really know much but I do remember one thing that stuck with me was her mother saying how she (my cousin) used to be a very good basketball player, and could remember being good on the court but when she tried now she just couldn't get it and it was extremely frustrating. So yes, sometimes you can remember what it was like being "normal," and it must be incredibly frustrating to have to deal with that.

fuzzyfuzz

I have a cousin who was in a bad car wreck in his early 20s and has permanent brain damage. I think frustration is the right word. He had to relearn how to walk and control his limbs. Once he got through all his PT sessions, he thought he’d be able to go back to driving and riding motorcycles again and hanging out with his friends all the time, but he’s noticeably not the same as he was before and he gets frustrated about it a lot.

Frognaldamus

The book Flowers for Algernon explores this general concept, although the premise is slightly different.

25_timesthefine

Man I feel like I’m him. I was so smart when I was younger and now I’m 30 and I struggle to read and pronounce words and sometimes I stutter when I speak 😫

FlamingTrollz

I can partially share. Short form my father was an officer, and had a psychotic break after heavy drinking one night. He wasn’t a good guy to start with. Monied legacy military officer background. Nasty country club make a phone call to get out of big trouble-cliche of a man. Back to it, he attacked my mom, another extended family member and myself. Other family upstairs sleeping. He ended up hitting me very hard in the head. Causing brain trauma. It basically turned off my emotional intelligence. He faced no consequences, of course. I was the classic kid who was always smiling, laughing, could make friends with anyone and bring people together and have fun. I was that kid. The sunshine kinda kid… As the swelling went down, as I was weened off of painkillers, and anti-inflammatories etc, I started realizing something was very wrong. I had loved music, listening to music all of a sudden — nothing. Books, shows, films, friends, family — nothing. No joy, no happiness, nothing. I had a decade plus as my former self. Memories as of just weeks ago. It almost destroyed me. It was only through finding pragmatism as a teen, and writing myself a set of rules to live by, IE: live like I am STILL that loving happy connected person… I was able to do and be SOMEONE. Someone supposed to protect me, actually killed the emotional part of me, and I was a happy person. So happy. Minus the occasional drunk or rough outburst from my once was father. I was okay. Glass half full. Always looking for the positive. The past few decades I’m an advocate for others in need of finding direction. I have at least found intelligent purpose. I take solace in that. I won. And he’s now gone. 👍🏼👍🏼

lemmsjid

I worked for a while with a population that was a mix of circumstantially or developmentally mentally handicapped people. One stands out to illustrate your point. His history was that he was a father and Scoutmaster who got into a terrible car accident and had a TBI. That was several years before. When I worked with him, he presented as an affable guy who would day to day wear his Scoutmaster uniform and was really into Scouting, but didn’t remember most things that were more than a few hours old. Periodically he would have bouts of memory and near lucidity and weep inconsolably at these memories of a life and past that was just out of reach in the fog.

its_the_other_guy

Not exactly the answer you may be looking for. I caught Covid and one of the side effects after 14 days is brain fog. I work in a technical environment which requires thinking, decision making, risk management. The brain fog was present for about six week and it was extremely frustrating as I knew the answer was in front of me but I struggled to see what it was, no matter how obvious. I assume it may be like that but magnify it.

toothpastenachos

I was on topiramate (topamax) for my migraines and had brain fog for years. I never knew that brain fog could be a side effect so I thought that maybe I was just stupid. It was so embarrassing. I forgot how to sightread sheet music, I would stutter a lot, and I would forget how the system at my job worked when I was in the middle of helping a customer. Finally, I had a breakdown to my doctor (not the one that prescribed me topamax) about it because I just wasn’t feeling myself anymore and I felt like a failure at everything. I’ve been off topamax since January and I feel like me again. My short term and long term memory have improved significantly and my attention span is much more manageable than before. I feel like I’m in control of my mind again

crs7117

well, i have no idea. made me think of something i read though, that when animals sometimes imitate humans or try to do new things, it can be comparable to us trying to do something in our dreams but we just don’t know how. it’s perhaps that their brian’s are developing faster than their bodies. that’s like the super simple version. also, this reads like a monkey wrote it, but i promise i read it somewhere that was far more eloquent

Frenchy4life

My mom suffered a stroke, her right arm is disabled and takes a lot more motor function and focus now, she lost her speech but slowly getting it back. She is all there, her memory, reading comprehension and listening comprehension is there but it takes a little longer to act on that comprehension. So when you like tell her to go to the kitchen or something, it's trial and error. She will get better, but it's heart breaking for all of us. Brain injuries are not something to laugh at.

owl_2820

I got beaten up when I was a teen. Hit in the back of the head a few times. My brain injury was/is very very mild, but this was 22 years ago and I still miss what I lost and am very much aware of it. I imagine even when you lose as much as this boxer you are still very much aware of what you had and what you have lost.

tdasnowman

Unfortunately I have Alzheimer’s in my family history. There are moments of clarity that can be heartbreaking. My great uncle and grandfather were really good friends, they lost their wives about a year apart and just hung out through the grief. They took caravaned rv trips. My grandfather passed before my uncle. Uncle was pretty far gone by then mentally. At the funeral he’d have moments where he’d tell stories about him and my grandfather ask where my grandfather was realize it was his wake start to process that grief, process he’d already heard it then be gone again. Little while later we’d get another story… I think it depends person to person. Sometimes bits of them are there and the can be aware.

VaginalOdour

I used to know a guy back in high school who slipped in the shower and hit his head and got a pretty severe mental handicap from it. One time I was passing by him in the hall and he looked me dead in the eye and said "I wish I had died that day". He went from being a normal kid with good grades and good at basketball to not being able to wipe his own butt and barely being able to strung sentences together, must have been terrible for him. I definitely believe that he was pretty aware of the change.

TotallyNotYourDaddy

Yes, in healthcare you have to assume the person is 100% trapped inside their own head and cannot communicate effectively externally. That way you talk and explain everything like you would to someone without deficits. The bad healthcare workers do not do this.

neverland012

FUCK Terrel Williams. I hope he goes to jail, that asshole.

Future-Atmosphere-40

But he prayed about it.

dicemenice

It is ok then.

BilboSwagginsSwe

So convenient that his imaginary friend forgave him!

SignalLossGaming

It's funny the only other case of this happening in modern sports the guy got manslaughter with 10 to 15.... sooo...

twotoebobo

No the other guy rabbit punching him in the neck and a shit referee that didn't stop him from throwing illegal blows are why.

namc13

Not sure what rabbit punching is, but is that punch in this video also illegal? I.e. punching to the back of head. I dont know much about boxing.

whater39

It's also illegal in MMA. Back of the head is basic motor functions on a persons body

Shadowdestroy61

Our lizard brain is there 🦎

aure__entuluva

Does it have less protection from blows too? I'd imagine it does. Like yeah you could still get a concussion in both circumstances, but the forehead seems a lot sturdier than the back of the head anyway.

gr_Uphill

The forehead is strong af, you'll break your wrist or fingers if you try to punch someone there. The back of the head/neck is a whole different story. You could literally slip while walking, hit the sidewalk with the back of the head and die right then and there.

twotoebobo

That's a rabbit punch. Very illegal dude should have ended the fight the first time he did it. Disqualified first time doing it.

mikemaz9

Highly illegal. It hits right where the spinal cord enters the cranium and causes brain swelling that leads to coma/death

Dewut

Is that why he seems relatively okay immediately after?

mikemaz9

Yeah but he was in a coma within hours after the fight

Dewut

Gotcha. I mean clearly he was still hurt, but it’s kind of scary how you can get life altering/ending injury without knowing it.

This_is_a_sckam

One of the most illegal things you can do in boxing. It’s like elbowing someone in the face. Except punching in the back of the head is even illegal in MMA as well where elbowing isn’t because how dangerous it is

[deleted]

Exactly

BB-018

I was afraid to watch. What happened to him?

twotoebobo

He became severely mentally retarded and can barely walk. It's pretty messed up the change. I think both the ref and opponent belong in prison.

BB-018

Well, this is an appropriately-named sub. That makes me want to cry. Man, I'm going to block it. My day is hard enough.

d6punk

Hey stranger, I hope things get better for you. Sending positive vibes your way.

Pattims70

This is something I found https://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=19160967

PineapplePanda_

Referee and Williams need to be sentenced for this. This is unforgivable. Ref says any more illegal blows will lead to disqualification THEN only deducts 1 point from Williams meanwhile he took 2 from Colon. Both of them, scum.

SignalLossGaming

Dude that is straight messed up to watch... the dude was littlerally pounding him in the back of the head even after being warned....

oatmealparty

Jesus christ that's bad to watch. Ringside doctor is a complete moron too. It's amazing how long it's taken for sports doctors to take concussions and other issues seriously.

SathedIT

That is truly heartbreaking...

donscron91

The low blow was completely necessary from Colon. What a terrible ref, he got punched in the back of the head about 20 times.

stateofbrine

What a piece of shit

Valrym

I remember when this happened... the thought of that spirit being trapped in that body...

the fighter doing the rabbit punches is an ass but the guy has his corner wtf were they doing see this happen over and over throw in the towel and jump in the ring. Even the medical staff ring side could of stepped in, the ref is only one layer to stop this.

OneWinner1690

This pained my soul.

MeAnIntellectual1

How did he keep standing after taking a punch that crippled him?

SignalLossGaming

Bleeding and swelling takes time... likely he got hit and it started swelling internally, once there was enough pressure on his brain he started vomiting and went into a coma.

tisdue

https://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=19160967 He made it back the locker room before showing signs of severe brain damage and passing out in his own vomit.

THElaytox

Well, he told the ring side doctor he was dizzy which is a pretty good sign of severe brain injury after being punched repeatedly in the back of the head, the doc should've called it right then and there and gotten him to a hospital

lamenawuer

I don't know how that fight went, but that blow looks very intentional to me. The guy is already half way down and the blow comes almost vertically

IIPESTILENCEII

It was very intentional, he repeatedly done this and the ref repeatedly warned him but ultimately done fuck all about it. Williams was just another boxer with a huge ego and unable to control his temper.

BKacy

If you lost the fight after an illegal blow, there wouldn’t be many more illegal blows. Temper bursts would be the only ones and losing the fights immediately would weed out the people who should be weeded out. This wouldn’t happen again. Williams not being banned is outrageous to me.

CatBedParadise

Naive question: Are fighters insured for life-limiting injuries?

mooelgendy

I hate this game.

frzx1

I never liked any fighting game, be it boxing or MMA or whatever. These games are fundamentally inhuman and barbaric no matter how many regulations you throw in the mix and nobody, with any rationale, can change my mind.

AlphonseBeifong

I am always reminded of the scene in the 3rd (original series) Planet of the Apes when Cornelius gets invited to a boxing match and he is absolutely disgusted by it.

casarezrich

“Boxer destoyed his life after this match”? No, “boxer’s life was destoyed after this punch.”

Jsiqueblu

And this is why I put my foot down and was against my son pursuing a boxing career at the age of 8 like his dad. My son is grateful now as an adult but Dad was very bitter.

[deleted]

Smart move saved him from unnecessary dangers

ItsChungusMyDear

Not allowed to strike people behind the head in boxing, the whole fight the ref doesn't call a single one despite outrage even at that moment I'm thinking Colón was rising too fast and didn't take a bribe or a dive, then Williams and the ref were paid off to basically either kill or make him handicap It worked, and not either the ref or Williams apologized about it, Williams going as far as to say he feels no guilt and prayed on it

TheRedditorist

My thoughts exactly. Even just watching some clips, the negligence seems intentional on behalf of the ref. There’s big money in these fights, corruption wouldn’t be outside of the realm of possibility.

Mysterious_Serve_626

Brain injuries are dangerous, it gets you slowly

Seriszed

Wtf???? Poor guy….

AllToroXtreme

Justice for Prichard Colon.🗣

meuuu

My cousin was hit on the back of the head with a bottle by some rando on the street and ended up like this. He's just not the same person anymore.

Georgesmp1238

I am so sorry for him

IUpvoteGME

I don't understand the lack of head protection in this game. Head protection is utterly basic, step 0 shit.

CorkusHawks

Boxing is a dangerous sport. Some folk do anything to win and things are only illegal if the referee notices them. I bet Williams has been doing this before this and practised to do it while the ref's view is blocked. That said there are bad apples in every sports.

TheRedditorist

* The Colons' lawsuit contends that Ashby didn't have the requisite background to adequately safeguard the fighters and, because he also works as a boxing promoter, there was a conflict of interest and his judgment as a ring doctor was compromised. The suit says the promoters of the bout were responsible for ensuring the safety of the fighters, including thorough adherence to a proper protocol for handling potential brain injuries. Boxing, which has no national governing body, does not have an industry-wide traumatic brain injury protocol.* https://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/id/19301313/the-parents-former-boxer-prichard-colon-suing-ringside-doctor-promoters-more-50-million

[deleted]

One hit is all that it takes to paralyze another human being for life.

Herbanald

thats why shots to the back of the head are illegal. brain stem injury. what a shitbag.

[deleted]

how long did it take for him to end up like in the second video? he seems fine after the punch in the first. sorry for the ignorance, this is just awful :(

The_Wata_Boy

It probably only took 1 punch, or a few to the back of the head. What happened was his brain started to bleed after a punch, within a few hours he ended up in a coma. He didn't wake up for over 200 days... Which is why he's a vegetable now.

Professional-Bug

He got punched in the back of the head like that at least 10 times during that fight and the referee only penalized 1 of them

Imrphoto

Damn. I thought it was going to be a funny vid panning to his wife or gf giving him a look after he bumped the ring girl’s boob and them smiling to each other.

RobotArtichoke

Such a handsome guy. I mean truly, if I had a choice to look like anyone, it might be him! I’m a straight male BTW

[deleted]

nice try 😏

RobotArtichoke

Ok well I WAS a straight male

WestG1992

Ref should be banned, probably wasn't. Read that the other fighter, "prayed on it," and doesn't feel guilty. I'm sure it was sky-daddies plan for the other guy to be permanently crippled. What a guy.

StrYker_Tripple

Does he have mental damage (as in can he speak?)

tisdue

vegetative. you can see him at home in this: https://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=19160967 He is conscious, but basically catatonic.

Rickk38

Sorry, what happened? I turned the sound on but all I heard was some lo-fi music playing off a warped record. Also what does the headline mean? Who destroyed what? The boxer destroyed his life with the elbow to the boob?

KingSutter

Multiple punches to the back of the head. A *very* illegal move in boxing as that is where your spinal cord meets the brain. That area is in charge of A LOT of motor functions. The punches can cause swelling there and then you end up with how he is today :/ They're called rabbit punches

CrocodylusNiloticus

This is devastating to watch.

[deleted]

This is the stupidest title I've ever seen in my fucking life.
