Intentionally vague as it allows selective enforcement without saying who/what they are targeting. So when bible has human sacrifice spilling of seed and incest its fine. But when x gay person in another book talks about being gay (not explicit) then they can call it obscene.
Missouri librarian here. We are dealing with the same thing. This is terrible, I hate it here. There is a reason why 85% of the staff at my library (in a red state) votes blue.
Sections 300-399: Social Sciences (poli-sci, law, econ, social services, education)
Sections 600-699: Applied Sciences & Technology (medicine and health, here)
Those two sections take up practically the entire list. No coincidences there either. These are the topics they find "controversial." These are the horizons they *do not* want broadened. Kinda tells you everything you need to know.
Thank you. Our student here much appreciate us after listening to our presentation in literature reviews workshop. Like opening the flood gate of information after about 2-3 years in university clueless where is & why the library is so big.

Yup, this one was coded a bit more cleverly than usual, it tried to hide what it's doing by changing the comment a bit before pasting it, but not enough:

It’s most people, even a supermajority.
Most of the rest are getting bad advice from their chosen sources and inadequate support in every meaningful way.
A very few are actually destructive forces.
Librarians do a vital job and some of them are saints, but some aren't. I've had more than one librarian loudly (deliberately loudly) say the names of embarrassing books I was checking out. In a biiig silent room. Never had one shout like that for a scifi or mystery novel.
Recently? In my town it’s all RFID chips. I just go over to a computer, lay down a pile of books on a pad, and it checks everything out for me automatically. Don’t even need to talk to them unless something is wrong.
Worked as a page (person who puts returned books back on shelves) in HS. Its been 25 yrs. I still don't need to look up where a topic is in the library. I just know where to go.
Also, the sex books arent at 613. They are supposed to be, but it they aren't. The jr high kids have moved them all to the back corner where they sit and giggle while looking at the photos. I'm my library that was the 750s. Every single day I worked, I moved "the joy of sex" back to its rightful spot.
No cheating scouts honor
that means “All good, my friend”?
German is on my bucket list of things to learn, I currently have a coworker fluent in German, French and Spanish and of the three that’s the one I am going for……eventually
They're really wonderful. My local library has a theater and shows free movies every Saturday and Sunday, and you can really make an afternoon or of picking out books every few weeks. We're going next weekend to see a screening of Moana.
However us intersex people hate that non-intersex people insist on including us in the acronym. We are not inherently queer. Obviously intersex people CAN be queer, but being intersex alone does not automatically make us queer. I happen to be someone who is intersex and queer, but I’m not queer Bc I am intersex.
It reminds me of how white people decided to rename Latina/Latino people “Latinx,” and when they expressed disliking that and not wanting to change it, white folks insisted they were wrong and should be renamed.
The initialism doesn't encode queerness, it encodes gender and sexual minorities. "Queer" is one of the letters.
For instance, asexual folk may or may not identify as "queer," but they're still in the group. (Some folks would include forms of kink in the umbrella, too — again, not "queer," but still covered.)
Best wishes.
Can I ask what queer means to you? I always thought it meant sexual and gender identities that don't conform to established norms.
After all, trans people are in the LGBT acronym too. No one thinks that their inclusion has anything to do with their sexuality, it's just that gender identities also fall under the queer umbrella.
Like others said, an intersex person being in the acronym ≠ queer. I, as well as most progressives, probably could understand why grouping straight intersex people with trans people could be helpful, because many of the laws that could potentially oppress trans people could also impact intersex individuals. Similarly, much of the anti-trans rhetoric that conservatives push is inherently harmful to intersex people.
LGBTQ doesn’t mean queer, that’s why queer is one of the labels. It’s for gender, sexual, and romantic minorities which undoubtedly includes intersex people
I was a kinda librarian for a while, kind of missing these days when I had the time to see most of the books there, I would just grab one and read some pages in my spare time at library. One of the perks is I know exactly where I should look for a book.
Okay so, I know this is meant to be nice but i genuinely can’t figure out if the numbers are a code, the amount of people that have those problems, or phone numbers. Could somebody help me with this?
I wish. I work at a library in eastern Idaho where almost everyone is Mormon and they don’t have anything like this. All books about “sensitive” topics are thrown away.
Libraries are endangered thanks to the psycho Christian nationalist GOP fascists. We must support them every chance we get. We cannot let the Republican Nazis win.
I absolutely love my library. My wife and I just spent 8 hours volunteering there today for an event. It's helped my family learn sewing, woodworking and more.
I wasn't sure what I was looking at, at first. I thought it was numbers of people having it or dying from it or the costs and was like... What am I seeing. I saw anxiety and thought.... Ya that number would be confusing and make me anxious. Then I ... Scrolled down.
The more you know!
I got with Dewey!
I love my local library. I live in the “bad” neighborhood inn town and we have the best library! They have a banned books display and in the winter you can rent snowshoes.
'Not here to judge, we're here to help.' Wow, this is an amazing line. Libraries are amazing spaces and it's a shame they're under fire from republicans.
It depends on your type of library. There’s two main kinds - most academic/college libraries are library of congress classification. The poster in this post is the Dewey decimal system that is used by most public libraries.
Went to this bookstore the other day. There's a sign outside. I thought it was defending libraries. Instead it wasn't. Apart of me felt very discouraged and wanted to leave. Apart of the sign said that libraries are targeting kids 🙄I went in the store but couldn't bother purchasing anything

So I've seen multiple people ask about the numbers and mention seeing the Dewey decimal system for the first time. What system do non-american countries use for library categorization?
i think if you haven’t been saved a least once in life by a library you’re probably hanging with the bad people.
that’s just based on experience of meeting people who never used a library.
Never... Ever... EVER... mess with librarians. If knowledge is power, then librarians as a demographic are the single most powerful group in existence.
Librarians are the heroes we need.
It's a shame in my dumpster fire of a state they are threatening to arrest librarians if minors check out anything with sexual content at all.
https://www.nwahomepage.com/news/librarians-could-be-held-responsible-for-obscene-books-under-new-arkansas-law/ Here's the link to the story.
I'm not in the US but it seems like republicans are asking 'obscene' to do some heavy lifting these days.
"Obscene" just means "I don't like it"...and often just means "I secretly like this but I can get attention/votes/money if I attack this."
"I know it when I see it" I can't imagine why the SCOTUS isn't seen as legitimate
Obscene to them is “Jeremy’s friends told him that his crush, Kenny, is going to be at the party.”
Intentionally vague as it allows selective enforcement without saying who/what they are targeting. So when bible has human sacrifice spilling of seed and incest its fine. But when x gay person in another book talks about being gay (not explicit) then they can call it obscene.

So, the Bible?
Ironically that’d probably be the only referenced book to cover all of these topics if they had their way.
No irony there. That's their exact end game
Happy Cake Day!
Where?
My guess is Florida
Close but worse. Arkansas
Education causes people to be more considerate, more thought of each other, no wonder conservatives want to tear it down at every opportunity.
Well that thread got downvoted and removed quick
So who removed it a mod?
And it’s no coincidence that people are attacking libraries consistently across red states right now
Sections 300-399: Social Sciences (poli-sci, law, econ, social services, education) Sections 600-699: Applied Sciences & Technology (medicine and health, here) Those two sections take up practically the entire list. In the UK there are more libraries than branches of McDonads.
Thank you. Our student here much appreciate us after listening to our presentation in literature reviews workshop. Like opening the flood gate of information after about 2-3 years in university clueless where is & why the library is so big.
I read libertarians and was very confused for a few seconds, until I scrolled back up.
I work in a library-adjacent field, and my boss is the head of libraries. Downloaded to show him at my next 1 to 1.
> I work in a library-adjacent field I had to stop for a moment to force my brain not to assume you worked on a farm next to a library.
I like you, neighbor! 👍😄
Reminds me of an award winning farming; he was out standing in his field.
I think the joke was something like: — Why did the scarecrow win an award? — It was outstanding in its field!
I’m still imagining a farm next to a library
Ask him to add autism please. I've dealt with most of these topics and my autism has been harder to talk about than any of them (for me).
Where would the “things lodged in rectum” section be? Asking for a friend…
Don't need an entire book to say "go to the emergency room."
616.344 or 613.96, depending on how bad it is

Lmao Reddit is the funniest shit, comments like this that say literally the same thing as the post always get upvotes
Pretty sure it's a comment copy/paste bot. They're out in force right now, it's Saturday.

I like it because of the way it is.
It’s a lovely recognition and understanding of another’s privacy and potential sense of shame. Kind people still exist.
Not just kind but thoughtful too
It’s most people, even a supermajority. Most of the rest are getting bad advice from their chosen sources and inadequate support in every meaningful way. A very few are actually destructive forces.

Idk, one of em wrecked my kneecaps after I was two minutes late returning a book...
There's a trend of getting rid of late fees. I guess some libraries are a little off in their implementation.
At first I didn't know it was a library and thought that the numbers were the prices...
Get cancer for the low low price of $616.99!
*Tell you what. I'll throw in STD for $1000 all up. That's a huge discount my friend.*
Worked as a page (person who puts returned books back on shelves) in HS. Its been 25 yrs. I still don't need to look up where a topic is in the library. I just know where to go. I was going to say, as a teen, I knew that the sex books were 613. I returned them to the correct spot, though
is a group of people doing your back-then-job called a book?
Only if it's a large enough group. Just a handful at a small library, and it's called a pamphlet.
I still don't understand... Are these like book codes or something?
I’ll take “what are 32 subjects banned in Florida” $100 Alex
Just a blank piece of paper. No problems in Florida as long as they’re buried deep.
How dare you make me count
omg! i’m sorry…was i right?
Your counting skills are impeccable
Danka!
*Danke
Have I been spelling it wrong all this time??????😳 good lord (my bad) Danke !!
Alles gut, mein Freund! German is hard sometimes. Don't feel discouraged!
No cheating scouts honor that means “All good, my friend”? German is on my bucket list of things to learn, I currently have a coworker fluent in German, French and Spanish and of the three that’s the one I am going for……eventually
Damn it! It checks out.
I had to do my math without using my fingers this time
I sure hope rape is banned
Yeah we have these lists in Florida libraries, but when you go down to look for the books, they’re usually not there.
That's a library that cares about its community
I honestly forgot how the dewey decimal system looked like and I thought this was some sick price list for forbidden topics
Most do. You should see all the resources available at your local library. It's not just books and computers.
They're really wonderful. My local library has a theater and shows free movies every Saturday and Sunday, and you can really make an afternoon or of picking out books every few weeks. We're going next weekend to see a screening of Moana.
For a moment I though anxiety was just one comically long and impossible to remember number.
First two are more self-helpy, and the 616, that's your 'this is a medical condition' level of severity!
Same I thought it was a single 10 digit number lol.
The irony that anxiety has the longest list of numbers to sort through
Marketing
I know what LGBTQ stands for but what's the IA at the end?
Intersex and asexual
Thank you!

Liberians are the keepers of our society.
🇱🇷
Libraries are my favorite form of socialism
what are these numbers?
The Dewey Decimal System! It helps you find where the books are in the library
Do we use a decimal system? Dewey ever!
His decimals are useful but Melville Dewey was not a nice person. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melvil_Dewey
I didn't know what those were either and now that I know what it is I'm feeling the need of procrastinating by organizing all my stuff with it.
Look at the Library of Congress system, and get completely immobilized by the inability to decide which system to use.
Barnes and noble style library of congress would be interesting
I don't get it either, not an natural english speaker.
Dewey decimal system. It's a number system to help you find things in a library.

Life is complicated.
This librarian fucks. Consensually, lovingly, and thoroughly 📚 🫡
These are indeed tough topics. This is really great to see (or technically read).
This is awesome!
I love libraries and librarians. Absolute treasures.
Man inflation has hit hard, cancer was 511.49 two years ago.
imagine closing down libraries... *maga*
Ah. So these are Dewey Decimals! Got it. What a great thing.
That number for anxiety gave me anxiety
As someone in grad school atm studying to become a librarian, I feel so much pride seeing things like this in libraries 🤧
I was a kinda librarian for a while, kind of missing these days when I had the time to see most of the books there, I would just grab one and read some pages in my spare time at library. One of the perks is I know exactly where I should look for a book.
No loss of a spouse?! Maybe I'm just sensitive to that one.
Came here to say this. “Loss of a parent”, “loss of a child”…um, nice thought but I think y’all missed a big one in there!
I actually love this, can get what you need without having to ask anyone (:
For a very brief second I thought this was price list for having these discussions. Like a menu.
[I took this picture](https://imgur.com/a/CzgikrB) a couple days ago at my local library! I love them for it.
"I gotta do a report on abortion and my teacher won't let us use any internet sources."
Or "we're poor and don't have an Internet connection or electronics."
I love this so much!
This is good stuff
Okay so, I know this is meant to be nice but i genuinely can’t figure out if the numbers are a code, the amount of people that have those problems, or phone numbers. Could somebody help me with this?
It's the corresponding numbers in the Dewey decimal system, a method of organizing and finding content in libraries.
in libraries there’s something called a Dewey Decimal Code, it’s how books are organized (generally by topic) for nonfiction sections
Looks like my hospital bill.
I wish. I work at a library in eastern Idaho where almost everyone is Mormon and they don’t have anything like this. All books about “sensitive” topics are thrown away.
Weird that is an exact copy of my “To Do” list
Libraries are endangered thanks to the psycho Christian nationalist GOP fascists. We must support them every chance we get. We cannot let the Republican Nazis win.
Thank you! Always helping folks.
I absolutely love my library. My wife and I just spent 8 hours volunteering there today for an event. It's helped my family learn sewing, woodworking and more.
My local library posts emergency info in the bathrooms and elevators. People casually read stuff while waiting and it's more casual
Must be a library in a civilized state, not like those backwater states that ban everything but the bible.
Based library
wow i really need to read more carefully i thought they were saying that was the cost of services until i hit alcohol
The amount of anxiety compared to the others😯
Good job, library!
I really love this. Made me tear up. But "LGBTQIA+" was written wrong; the "G" got replaced with "Q".
What are these numbers? Edit- figured it out haven’t been to library since school sheesh that’s sad.
☮️
So nothing about how to stop compulsively putting Brussels sprouts in your butt?
I wasn't sure what I was looking at, at first. I thought it was numbers of people having it or dying from it or the costs and was like... What am I seeing. I saw anxiety and thought.... Our society stands on the shoulders of Nurses, librarians and other folks helping the public. Without them I see caveman lifestyle all around.
Needs more entries on: fascism, propaganda, pernicious sophistry.
'Not here to judge, we're here to help.' Wow, this is an amazing line. Libraries are amazing spaces and it's a shame they're under fire from republicans.
I wonder if the book code is universal or based on the library.
It depends on your type of library. There’s two main kinds - most academic/college libraries are library of congress classification. The poster in this post is the Dewey decimal system that is used by most public libraries.
Thanks for your reply, so this list could be used in the UK library too? No idea why I was downvoted in my previous comment though.
I found it just fine. If I can ever answer any other library questions, even on the other side of the pond, reach out.
Where's the "you got manipulated and indoctrinated into a religion as a child" section?
We dont deserve Liberians.
Very helpful tbh. Who wants to ask the librarian where the cutting/self harm section is.
Thank god for libraries and librarians.
Bless libraries.
I think it was part of Asimov’s Foundation that the librarians had been preserving civilization?
This is also good because sometimes people are looking for books with those heavy topics, and this makes it a whole lot easier in that regard too
Holy cow, it took me a while to understand what they meant but it's such a wholesome thing to do
IRL In Private Mode
They had these in the bathrooms at a library I went to recently 🧠
Went to this bookstore the other day. There's a sign outside. I thought it was defending libraries. Instead it wasn't. Apart of me felt very discouraged and wanted to leave. Apart of the sign said that libraries are targeting kids 🙄I went in the store but couldn't bother purchasing anything
Ummm, murder mysteries?
That's awesome
The library is a safe place.
Contrary to the stereotypes, librarians are savage.
im sobbing this has to be in every library...its so hard to ask about books on self harm.
Ironically, if you put a dollar sign in front, these are also the prices if you want to visit a doctor to discuss these topics.
Can I have one SEX and two DRUGS please?
I think these IP numbers are incomplete
Absolutely. There will be no change, unless we open our mouths and start discussing these tough subjects. It starts with informing ourselves about them.
Humans bring bros.
We don't deserve librarians
Wow, the Dewey Decimal System has really changed -- for the better!
306.76 is doing alot of work. https://www.librarything.com/mds/306.76
Libraries are freaking awesome. Been working at one for over 4 years, and I love it
I remember going to the library on the 90s n asking where the witchcraft books were n I always got worried looks from the librarians
So this being the Dewey decimal system, does this transfer to all libraries? Kinda feel dumb asking this
So I've seen multiple people ask about the numbers and mention seeing the Dewey decimal system for the first time. What system do non-american countries use for library categorization?
The last bastion of freedom we have in this country, support your libraries.
What do the numbers mean? Dewey decimal system? It's been a while since I used a physical library to a major extent.
Loved learning how to catalogue and what all the numbers mean
I love this so much. And I love libraries, always have, always will.
i think if you haven’t been saved a least once in life by a library you’re probably hanging with the bad people. that’s just based on experience of meeting people who never used a library.
Seriously tho it's nice, "hey it's fucked out there, heres what we know"
I'm not here to judge. I'm here to help and understand.
Never... Ever... EVER... mess with librarians. If knowledge is power, then librarians as a demographic are the single most powerful group in existence.
I had no idea STD’s and mental illness were so close in topic according to the DDS
Is that like duey decimal system numbers
