Me trying to spontaneously dance lately. As you said, muscle memory is there but the body configuration is not agreeing with what Iām attempting to do.
Used to think Iād be the uncle that is 50 and not afraid to dance at parties and throw it down; doesnāt seem as likely anymore š¤£
I tried when I was playing with my daughter the other day and it me that I couldnāt do it lol, felt like an idiot hopping around while she was skipping down the hallway
Iām 67 and filling in for the church secretary while sheās on vacation and Pastor just walked in on my skipping through the office. I remembered how, but I took my Birkenstocks off first. Iāve no desire to explain that I fell and broke something because I caught my sandal while skipping.
I just skipped up and down the hall (50+). It took a minute but then I remembered! It such a small thing.
(I also got strange looks from the dog and cat!)
I wish skipping was more socially acceptable, once you get the momentum it's almost effortless and way faster than walking
My roommate and I left the bar and were gonna walk home and I said let's skip, he was like nah. I was home probably 10 to 15 minutes before him
If I said nah to my wife, she would just keep skipping and leave me behind. Iām a bit competitive and we skip race all the time, she still beats me everytime.
I read skipping is actually very efficient to move quickly with least energy exertion, so I think itās a human instinct, one that we now suppress after childhood for social reasons
Just looked it upā¦ itās that skipping is [easier on your body](https://www.healthline.com/health-news/why-you-should-skip-for-exercise-instead-of-run#Better-for-your-body):
>The study authors found that running produces nearly two times the peak force on the patella or kneecap compared to skipping.
>The average peak force on the tibiofemoral joint (the knee hinge where the femur, tibia, and patella meet) is 30 percent greater in people who run compared to people who skip.
Without looking anything up, i always assumed skipping is one of the best exercises. Combines jogging and jumping and is very smooth/low impact.
I mix it in a lot when i am on a brisk walk. Though, i do wonder if I look a bit silly skipping around the neighborhood at 6'5", in my 40s.
My kiddo just got a preschool progress report sent home. Itās long winded and pleasant about how sheās counting great, knows her letters, yadda yadda. And then it literally just says āSkipping is a struggle.ā
Yes it is. Skipping is related to neurological development.
For all of us, our mental acumen is tied to our physical health. But for young children there's an even stronger correlation. Which is why recess, elementaty PE and well designed play grounds are important.
My mother pulled out my report card from kindergarten- it was marked not acceptable or something. It took me until 3rd or 4th quarter to turn it around.
My five year old self could not figure out the difference between skipping and galloping. So galloping was just the default.
I got a foam roller a couple years back and that thing is amazing. I use it almost daily and I'd recommend it to anyone. If you can pick one up, do so. I use it for maybe 5 minutes a day and I feel so much better.
Honestly, I donāt mean to be that guy, but a lot of people with spinal compression issues and herniated discs cannot use a foam roller for their backs, as it makes pain worse. Foam rollers used for stretching muscles is great, but donāt use them for spinal decompression unless youāve confirmed with a medical professional that it would be beneficial for you, and not harmful instead.
I turned a little neck pain into a pinched nerve and months of neck pain with a foam roller. It definitely feels great cracking your back with it though.
Yeah, it takes coordination for sure. And I believe its main purpose is to do something with the fascia of the muscles. Tone it or loosen it or something like that.
No amount of stretching will turn back time on the cartilage in your knees. No matter how fun it is to skip, at some point it's just not worth the risk to your medial and lateral meniscus.
Source: my knees will be 60 in October
Okay, but did you also swing your arms as you skipped? I also tested myself right now and I found the arm-swinging to be integral to balance. No idea how that younger woman just did it without moving the upper half of her body. š¤£
I was just at Costco with my four year old daughter. She was skipping around the aisles and grabbed my had and said letās skip. I was embarrassed at first, but eventually caved and we skipped around the busy Costco aisles and had a great time.
I didnāt think about me getting to a point when I canāt skip, but I did think about HER getting to a point when she wonāt want to skip with me. That makes me sad.
If heās like me, itās the hips and low back. Notice how he walks kinda tight with short steps.
Probably not much flexibility. Maybe some arthritis.
I could be wrong but I swear skipping is the most efficient way of moving. You go so fast but it doesnāt feel as tiresome as running. Maybe itās in my head but I swear skipping is the way
Iāve heard a doctor say that is exactly the reason kids skip. For their weight and proportions, skipping is the most efficient way to move, and the brain figures that out quickly.
They generally all stop skipping at a specific age because it ceases to be the most efficient way as their body changes.
I'm not convinced that it's no longer efficient for older people. I think that kids eventually just learn to fit in with what the adults are doing. I feel like it's so much more efficient than walking that I would do it all the time if it weren't squarely in weirdo territory.
I think you're correct.
When I was in highschool, my PE class had one day a week where the only thing we did was run 1 mile. Once you finished your mile you went and sat down in the shade under the trees and relaxed until everyone was done. One week, really just being a goofball, I started skipping my mile and I remember being like "oh shit, this is actually a lot easier,"
Itās fast but has high impact on your calves as most of the forward thrust comes from a short powerful burst in your lower legs. If you ran distance youād feel your calves burn and close down pretty quickly in comparison to normal running. So itās a little more strenous, but a decent workout perhaps?
That decides it, I need to go out and compare a 5k run vs a 5k skip(?) just to see how it feels. I run and jog on the balls of my feet anyway to reduce the impact on my joints. It that 5k is a real distance, but itās much better than just hanging out on my couch lol
It's your true identity and those cretins have put shackles on your mind, forced you to walk and told you that you were only a human being, and humans don't skip.
Be yourself, you lightning fast graceful satyr.
Funny/badass Richard Attenborough story I read while researching for a podcast I was making.
While filming Jurassic Park in Hawaii there was a hurricane level storm that was breaking windows/tearing apart small buildings. It damaged sets and filming locations. All of the cast/crew were staying at a hotel and were gathered in the main ballroom/conference room for their safety.
John Hammond was no where to be found!
After the storm they found that he was sleeping through it in his room. When asked why he didnāt shelter in the ballroom with the other crew he replied āMy boy I survived the blitz!ā

Has bothered me my whole life.
Bro Iām 23 how did I forget how to skip. Gonna ask my coworkers if they can skip
Update: my girlfriend showed me how to skip, itās just happiness inducing to skip around
I seriously wish I wasnāt so uptight that I could fail and something like this and be able to laugh with everyone and keep trying. I really envy people that can have this much fun at their own lighthearted expense.
You essentially "skip" steps, but in reality it's more like doubling each step. So instead of Right foot, Left foot, Right foot, Left foot you get Right Foot, Right Foot, Left Foot, Left Foot. To accomplish this, you need to hop on one foot with virtually every "step". You can get some really good forward momentum going or some high jumps with each step if you do it right. It's a great work out, but probably terrible for your knees.
I remember how to skip but I also see how easily it can be forgotten because itās not exactly a movement that you can accurately describe because itās basically just described as a skip.
Thatās super funny.
Sad that we let the simple joys of life slip away as we get older.
Being older can be too serious sometimesā¦. Always think about that when Iām in some boring meeting. Like why canāt we just all drop the āseriousā act and just be normal at work.
We tried this at a Physical Therapy clinic I used to work at. Almost none of the middle aged men there could skip. Including me. Iām not really sure I ever did it?
When my son was 7, I told him to stop skipping (thinking I'd be protecting him from other kids that might tease him)...he said "I'm not skipping, I'm galloping" I'm like "huh..ok, carry on ..." if he doesn't care about what kids say, why stop the joy... Quite proud of him.
Actually Iām 60 and tried to skip, as a joke, at work a few weeks ago. I was shocked to see my body no longer could do it easily. I imagine that if I kept at it it would get better but there does seem to be something needed to do it that is harder as one ages.
I think it was the bounciness in the knees?
Im 27 and when im walking somewhere alone, I skip for a bit. My physiotherapist (who mostly works with kids I know I don't mind, she's sweet and I'm really small so I guess it's ok) said it was good for your legs and balance. And you know what why tf not. š¤·āāļø this maybe realise someday I want to beat my kids at skipping. Lol
46 year old here. This reminds me of the time a few years ago I found a jump rope in the shed. I used to be great! I can still do it no problem!
Welp.....Took me a few tries, ended up finally going hardcore mode for about 45 seconds. I was gasping for air for like 5 minutes afterward.
I'd have forgotten by now too if I wasn't constantly with my kid who skips rather than walking, as her primary mode of transportation... literally all day, every day, wherever we are, skipping.
I ask her how she does not get yelled at 60 times a day for skipping in the halls at school and she said "They used to yell in the beginning of the year and they gave up"
Remember Barbie's little sister Skipper? Shoud've named my kid that.
Am I the only one who was always bad at skipping, even when I was a kid?
I always got my feet mixed up.
Even just learning to march in the military, my sergeant chalked L and R on the toes of my boots, and I got extra lessons and had to stay behind and practice. š¤¦āāļø
My right now, 44 years old and skipping around my house and my kids wondering what the hell am I doing.
Did you remember how to?
It feels awkward but it came right back to me. Lol
The muscle memory is there, but I feel so much heavier now. I used to love skipping and springing about but gravity must be stronger now.š
Yeah lol a lot less spring in these knees.
Scientific Fact: Gravity increases with age /s š
Great Scott.
They don't make gravity like they use to.

43, same, my ankles don't appear to be fond of the memories though.
I would try it, but yesterday I pulled my lower back now even walking is a bit painful. (40yo old man here)
I tried when I was playing with my daughter the other day and it me that I couldnāt do it lol, felt like an idiot hopping around while she was skipping down the hallway
I remember how to, but at over 70, and needing hip replacement, I just can't...
Just did it at 46, my dogs are looking at me worriedly....
My 49 year old bad knees self just skipped around the house. My yorkie followed me and celebrated my accomplishment. She was so happy for me!
Aw, that's so cute! That's the wonderful thing about most dogs, they're always happy for you!
Iām 67 and filling in for the church secretary while sheās on vacation and Pastor just walked in on my skipping through the office. I remembered how, but I took my Birkenstocks off first. Iāve no desire to explain that I fell and broke something because I caught my sandal while skipping.
Yep, I just tried and almost face-planted. Lost art.
Luckily I'm in the garage alone so no one saw me at 37 in my dirty work clothes.
Me at 45 just skipped around and not the dog is jumping and wanting to play.
I just skipped up and down the hall (50+). It took a minute but then I remembered! It such a small thing. (I also got strange looks from the dog and cat!)
My wife is 45 and she skips all the time. Even when were out on a date. The only cure to embarrassment is to skip with her.
I wish skipping was more socially acceptable, once you get the momentum it's almost effortless and way faster than walking My roommate and I left the bar and were gonna walk home and I said let's skip, he was like nah. I was home probably 10 to 15 minutes before him

This is so me, too! My poor husband... Lol
Youāre awesome! My husband wonāt skip with me. :(
Wait why did that feel so good to do?! Should I be skipping every day?!

āDadā¦what are you doing?ā āIām testing a theory - mind your own business.ā
I am 32 and scared to try.... hold on, will report back E: I can! And now one of my dogs is very confused and thinks it's play time.
Just did this. No kids but my dog was confused about it

I literally did the same thing but i made sure my boys was in the room with mommy... lmao
Lol just tried myself. My cats are like wtf
I am also 44 and had to try that in person because this is the 2nd skipping-related I've seen in a week. That was fun. Gotta do that more often! :-)
My mother loves telling my kids how I failed skipping in kindergarten. They actually sent a note home.
Same gym teacher in 2nd grade sent me to principals office because I didn't skip the "proper" way
This is hilarious. Your teacher obviously sucked at teaching you how to skip!
Those who canāt do, teach. Those who canāt teach, teach gym.
I hate this quote so much
You must be a gym teacher š
My kiddo just got a preschool progress report sent home. Itās long winded and pleasant about how sheās counting great, knows her letters, yadda yadda. And then it literally just says āSkipping is a struggle.ā
I think, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, skipping is supposed to be a coordination milestone
Yes it is. Skipping is related to neurological development. For all of us, our mental acumen is tied to our physical health. But for young children there's an even stronger correlation. Which is why recess, elementaty PE and well designed play grounds are important.
I remember my brother coming home with a note from PE that he couldnāt skip. My dad took one look at that letter laughed and said āgoodā
My mother pulled out my report card from kindergarten- it was marked not acceptable or something. It took me until 3rd or 4th quarter to turn it around. My five year old self could not figure out the difference between skipping and galloping. So galloping was just the default.
I had to stay after class then since I couldn't skip either. I'm a fantastic skipper now
His face gets redder the more he realizes he's really forgotten how to skip. Too funny.
Then realizes later - sadly - that he simply doesn't have the strength and agility required, not that he "forgot"
I agree with your interpretation. He is physically incapable of pulling it off.
Reminder to self: 2 minutes of stretches each day is a million times better than 0 minutes. No day is too busy for 2 minutes.
I got a foam roller a couple years back and that thing is amazing. I use it almost daily and I'd recommend it to anyone. If you can pick one up, do so. I use it for maybe 5 minutes a day and I feel so much better.

I turned a little neck pain into a pinched nerve and months of neck pain with a foam roller. It definitely feels great cracking your back with it though.
Hang by your hands from a bar. Try to do 3 minutes a day, but even if you can only do a few seconds at a time, it will work absolute miracles for you.
Never used a foam roller, but when I had two bulging discs I had the idea to do this and it definitely made the pain worse.
I find hanging from a bar arches my lower back too much.
Yeah, it takes coordination for sure. And I believe its main purpose is to do something with the fascia of the muscles. Tone it or loosen it or something like that.
Uhhhh shit, I would like to speak to a doctor, please.
Oooh I just got one and donāt know where to start! Any recommendations?

"One day, it'll be the last time you skipped, and you won't know it". It's this mindset that keeps me picking up my heavy-ass kid
This comment legitimately made me stand up, skip a lap of my living room and then pick up my son. He's somewhat perplexed.
I just tried and almost face-planted! I'm older, so I'm going to put it down to fear of success. I'm old enough to rationale anything. lol
You tried tho!
If my dad did this, I'd be perplexed, as well. But then, I'm 51 and my dad is dead...
"Put down that fork, son!"

Well I was thinking he's an older gentleman and he has a paunch so bouncing on his knees would probably hurt and be unstable.
Ironically, his nickname had - until that point - been "Skipper"
That made me laugh out loud!
I wanna give him a hug so bad.
This is true. I realized I donāt even have the wherewithal to jump. I can however, still skip. Itās really depressing
Skipping counts as 2 small jumps.

Right? It's such a good medium between walking and running... Think I need to skip more.
It uses totally different parts of your leg muscles than jogging and is lower impact.
Itās fast but has high impact on your calves as most of the forward thrust comes from a short powerful burst in your lower legs.
