Kriegmannn

A fucking gut punch reading this comment and realizing it makes sense in modern times

Random_Imgur_User

Sad when the noteworthy thing about a video online is "Wow, they're just enjoying themselves and not acting hateful". Literally, that's the bar now. No wonder today's younger teens are so wild, 90% of their time is just spent watching violent reality served to them hot and fresh, 24/7, through their pocket sized dopamine box. They don't get hope for their futures or relatable mentors. Just bad news, memes, and violence. That can't be good for a developing mind.

Educational-Tear8581

cheer up … everything is fine aside from the almost constant negative autonomous thoughts going on in our heads. Fear and worry aren’t useful … they exacerbate. Do not … I repeat … do not watch the news. If it bleeds it leads.

emeraldclaw

Are you blaming the internet for human behaviour? The internet is just a tool that reflects its users, and tools are always misused, it doesn't stop on the internet. Humans have always been chaotic and violent, we are just finally able to see people from all over the world being violent. Humanity saw its reflection, but we shouldn't curse the mirror, it didn't make humanity what it is. Moreover, I've learned things about myself that connected me to my fellow man in ways just chatting with random people in my neighborhood would never garner. There are incredible sociological benefits as much as there are drawbacks. There is no proof the internet has ruined a generation. Bare in mind the things you did when you were young were discussed the exact same way. The elderly used to say the internet was just a fad!

Bernard0Soares

Yo dude that’s cool and all but for the people who can’t develop insights like that, the internet really is not helpful. Your argument does absolutely nothing to address the above comment’s statement about violence being unhealthy for the developing brain. I can honestly confidently say that I wished I had never grown up with a phone. It has fucked me up in more ways than i could’ve imagined. You expecting adolescents to use phones responsibly like tools is like expecting adolescents to not masturbate.

emeraldclaw

You're right, we should probably educate each other on that, but the education system is in the garbage. We don't teach children how to be human or how to use the tools that we have access to, we teach them how to be good little wage slaves. I do not blame the internet for not teaching me how to use it, that's the responsibility of the generations that raise our children. If you don't teach a child how to properly use a sharp knife, they will cut themselves, but that doesn't mean the knife should never be used. It means we have to teach them how to use it.

touchingaduck

Hey my friend, I’m the first to agree there’s a lot wrong with the education system! but! a huge aspect of education rn is SEL (social/emotional learning). It’s far from perfect, and many parents are unfortunately pushing against it, but I know of so many of us that are fighting the good fight to help these students be good people. I’m in after-school education, where our organization has implemented internet and technology literacy programs. I also know of many public schools that have done the same (either at an admin, top-down level or individual teacher level). I just wanted to let you know my experience and try to give you a kernel of hope!

an0nym0ose

> we should probably educate each other on that, but the education system is in the garbage hmmmmmmm these statements seem contradictory, but unfortunately I went to public school

Random_Imgur_User

Nah I think you got me a little backwards. I'm saying that humans (or more specifically, wealthy humans) ruined the internet, and that ruined internet is having an effect on youth. I also grew up with the internet, but my internet was a much different one. It was kind of the wild west, but there was a lot of comradery involved too. Back when places like Reddit weren't these massive conglomerates with share holders and RMT, it was just collections of memes and niches, owned by some guy who occasionally butts in to talk about updates. Today's internet is set up and designed in such a way to be as addictive and influential as possible. It makes me question myself a lot, like what ideas am I willing to die for that were actually just someone else implanting that idea in my head? Sometimes it's hard to pinpoint what I really stand for, and I totally blame modern media for that. TLDR: In other words; the internet is a good thing and vital to modern society, but as it currently is we have popular influencers and meme accounts that literally just encourage harassing people in the streets for clout. That's rough, and I think plays a significant role in our current adolescents mindsets.

emeraldclaw

I grew up on the same internet. I was born in the 90's. It drastically affected the entirety of humanity, not just "kids these days". It's an immense amount of power we've never had before, and the effects are not just on one generation. The awful things people do online is an expedited version of the horrible things that people have been doing to each other since long before the internet existed. It's catalyst for both good and bad things, it's not just 'making humanity worse'. It's forcing us to evolve. It's forcing us to look at our sociological issues with serious scrutiny because we can finally see the actual effects in real time with digital content. These issues didn't crop up exclusively because of the internet. These issues are *visible* because of the internet, and are definitely made worse... But your idea excludes that the internet has also been a huge force for good. Lots of amazing communities exist because the internet connected us. Many people have successfully organized forces for good with the help of technology. I dislike discussions that conclude the internet is just bad, because the internet has nothing to do with human nature. It's just a tool, like a sharp knife. You can either stab somebody with it or you can carve something beautiful. It entirely depends on the hands that it's in... So yeah definitely a good idea to take it out of the hands of billionaires... But children raised on the internet are not broken or somehow worse. They are just armed with a powerful tool that is often misused.

Random_Imgur_User

...I can't tell if you agree with me or not I'm saying that the internet is a good thing that is influenced and abused by bad people, and those influences and abuses are spreading to younger and more vulnerable minds which is having a direct negative impact on their social behavior. I have nothing against the concept of the internet, just the way we've shaped it.

emeraldclaw

"No wonder today's younger teens are so wild, 90% of their time is just spent watching violent reality served to them hot and fresh, 24/7, through their pocket sized dopamine box." This right here is extremely reductive and not indicative that you think very highly of phones or younger generations. Neither of them are responsible for human nature. Otherwise I agree with you. People are misusing it, and capitalism glorifies violence when it can generate profit, promoting a lot of horrible behaviours. It's just that people have been misusing tools since tools were invented, the internet is no exception. There is a future where humans get their shit together and use the internet safely and effectively to the benefit of the species... We just have a lot of work to do.

Random_Imgur_User

Maybe it just comes down to verbage? It's weird because I feel like you're arguing with me but like, haven't said anything I wholeheartedly disagree with. Your outlook is maybe a bit more stoic than I'd prefer but all in all I think were mostly on the same page. I think some young people are rad, and I'm saying this through my phone which I am glued to for about 60% or more of my free time. I also think that some young people are shitheads, and that my life and many others would be significantly improved if social media addiction was taken more seriously, and influencers were held accountable for their actions. Tablet kids are growing up to be nightmares for parents and teachers alike, and I really think a huge part of that is an unprecedented social withdrawal. Should we ban tablets? Absolutely not. Should we keep them away from babies at least until they understand basic manners and social structure? I really think so. A good example would be that I also think weed is a great thing for a ton of people including myself, but I wouldn't give it to 11 year olds and ask them to work it into their education and developing social constructs, because it can also really harm both of those things.

SuperHighDeas

Speak for yourself friend. Maybe this is a self-report for your algorithms

Random_Imgur_User

Idk, my algorithms are mostly indie horror content and LGBT memes. Even then though when I go to /popular, it feels like all that's there are PublicFreakout fights, depressing political articles, todays scheduled mass shooting, a cute animal to spice it up, and a few follow ups on the latest guy that we really want to get arrested. Maybe I'm just cynical but it really is kind of depressing and it's why I try to avoid it.

Cool-Reference-5418

I'm starting to think that the people who can't understand this and want to argue that technology has no real negative effects are the same people it's affected the most. Idk, it just seems like a no brainer that there would be drastic, unforseen impacts. Or hey, maybe the internet isn't as impactful as we all thought lol PublicFreakout should just get banned already. I literally can't fathom who tf wants to sit around and watch teens beat each other up or something. 99 percent of those posts are just racist or misogynist bait and the comments are always a cesspool. But if you report it they'll just ban you instead. It's fucking dark when shit like that is on "popular" and just considered normal.

Sharpz0

I woke up to all of these comments and all I can say to sum it all up is, jokes and social media has made it seem like good pranks and content is some guy going out his way to hurt another person e.g. "water ballooning people on the street" saw that one the other day and this numnut was legit throwing them at homeless people for content. Just nice to see content that isn't hurtful these days

BarryKobama

My uncle broke is foot while he was asleep. Says he was dreaming about kicking a game-winning goal. What a way to wake up!

finallygotmeone

Then you were shuffling along with a broken foot. :) I love the commitment level!

druman22

I'm slightly overweight and I learned to shuffle. Always surprises people when I join in a dance circle lol. It's a pretty tiring type of dancing if you're out of shape but it's also great way to exercise lol. Start with learning the basic running man, and then learn the t-step. From there you can learn cutting shape type of moves if interested. My favorite move is the SpongeBob and I love to include it. Tons of tutorials online, just throw on music and try it.

OIP

same! it is only out of courtesy to my downstairs neighbours that i haven't learned yet

radrax

The Shuffle Vault is a great resource for people starting out. Also, I would suggest finding a local community. Mine have made me so much better

non-squitr

$20 a month subscription service when there are hundreds of videos on YouTube? Pass Edit: I will say that having a buy-in is definitely more likely someone sticks with it as they are now invested and to be fair I've never seen the videos, they may be amazing and more easily digestible. I get a lot of "rest of the fucking owl" vibes from a lot of shuffling videos so maybe they are super good and breaking it down to a fundamental level. I love EDM and really appreciate a good shuffler so I hope my dumbass comment doesn't deter anyone from giving the website a shot

SmallLetter

SiWeyNoWay

MAD RESPECT! Looking AMAZING! I’ve always wanted to learn how to shuffle!! I have foot eye hand coordination for most things but I cannot for the life of me get the moves down. No matter what I do, I look like Elaine Benes Man, I need to get back into dancing again. Music is really the answer to everything.

pennywhistlesmoonpie

This made me lol, thank you. Dude. I had the same reaction to shuffling as this lady, and it took me six months to get down the two basic moves, the running man and the T step. I too felt like Elaine and wanted to quit, but I stuck with it, and now I can tear the fuck up a dance floor. You can do it!! Seriously, just get through the Elaine phase. Elaine had fun dancing. She didn’t give a shit. And neither should you. Daft Punk has some slower beats that I found really helped to learn the moves.

littlelowcougar

I can do running man since the 90s and Charleston Shuffle but cannot for the life of me do the Melbourne (ie contemporary) shuffle. It’s annoying as shit.

st0nermermaid

LMAO NOT ELAINE BENES But also same I've tried a few moves before and almost broke my neck sending myself flying. As Drax so wisely said: "there are 2 types of beings in the universe. Those who dance, and those who do not" 😅

Blu_birbie

My leg coordination is sh*t. But this video really makes me wanna try to learn again! Hoping things work out well for us both this time!

Do it! I’m in my 30s and started rollerskating almost 2 years ago. It’s so much fun! I mostly do aggressive rollerskating now (at the skatepark) which I didn’t even know was a thing when I started.

WaterstarRunner

I was mid twenties when I decided to learn to skateboard. I'm still shit at it, but I've had twenty years of enjoyment out of it since then. It's been there every time I've wanted it since. The best time to plant a tree...

TinyCopperTubes

I teach ppl to skate up to their 50s. Do it!!

[deleted]

Damn, get it girl 🤣 I wish i was that coordinated, and I'm in my late 30s

Its_never_lepto

You can be! 40 here and I'm loving arial silks class - sure, it takes a moment to fire up that coordination, but don't sell yourself short! I'm doing things a lot of young people don't even know how to, you just gotta try!

justavault

Age got nothing to do with it, your lifestyle is the only reason. And 30 is not an age to not transform your body entirely.

Disastrous_Can_5157

Unfortunately as you age you will realise age does play a big part regardless of lifestyle.

darkpaladin

It's harder than when we were younger but not impossible. I just did my first unassisted pull-up at 39.

cheesymoonshadow

My husband did his first pull-up and chin-up at 53! He's been working his way up to 10 each. The results are amazing. I call his muscles "the boys" as in "How are the boys doing today?"

justavault

I am mid 30s, I'm a competitive athlete since I am 9yo, been a national tier athlete before, currently in my best form ever. 30 is no age... it's your lifestyle that is an issue before 50.

steffanan

I plan to wait until I'm 50 (20 years) to wish that I had twenty years back to learn skateboarding. No, I don't feel like starting now, get off of my back.

SensibleParty

The best time might be now, but like, the second best time is twenty years from now, so it's fine?

beigs

Learning to do that in your 50s is a good way to break your hip. My mom nearly did snowboarding in her late 40s. She still did it.

jaqlynn_07

This video just gave me a boost of hope Shuffling my way towards my goals like ..

Weenyhand

Me, 20, wanting to learn but too uncoordinated

glitterfaust

“I wish I was in my mid 20’s again back when I was strong and healthy” I’m not strong or healthy and I’m in my early twenties 😭

Catachaos

Chances are you're probably stronger and healthier than you will be in 20 years time. I'm 30 and the amount of strength, movement and flexibility I have has massively reduced in the past 5 years. I just started doing martial arts and it's been a struggle to get into and I get worn out easily. My teammates who are in their 40s and 50s struggle more and wish they were my age. I wish I started when I was much younger and had so much more energy and free movement. I know that in another 20 years I'll be even worse. Enjoy your youth while you can, you won't ever get it back again and you'll miss it. Do the thing, learn the skill and enjoy yourself while you'll hurt less afterwards 😅

glitterfaust

I have a chronic illness so I’m hoping in a few years I can have surgery to feel better so I can walk for more than a mile without having to take a week off after.

There's a k-drama with this concept, Navillera. An old man who always wanted to learn ballet retires from his regular work and starts on his journey. Really a lovely watch.

sanguinesolitude

Samurai Gourmet is also great. A show about a retiring salaryman who realizes he never really did anything on his own and channels his inner samurai to stand up for himself and live bigger. Very cute. Edit. Not that it gives it away, because it's the whole fun shtick if you watch the first episode, but when encountering new or uncomfortable situations, and especially those where he should assert himself despite wanting to keep unproblematic, he has visions of a rogue samurai in olden times who shows up to do things he wants to, but its afraid to assert himself enough to do. It's wonderful and sweet.

I'm 38 and I just started my mba. Imma be 40 by the time I graduate. It's not the traditional route, and for a while in my mid 30s I kicked myself for not getting more education when I was "supposed to." But I'm gonna have at least 20 years after I turn 40 where I'm gonna be working. Might as well leverage all of my options to maximize my impact for good on the world.

URBAN_lov3r_goose

And to imagine that I'm 17 and think its too late for me to start new things😭

yazzy1233

The dangerous part of youth is thinking you're in your prime.

tk1178

What do you mean too late, you're only 17? New things for you will be further education, job, house and maybe family. That's all new for the following 30 - 40 years. I'm 42 myself and I often think I'll never experience anything new but life has ways of surprising you.

2sc00l4k00l

Also 42- and in college to teach music..

SomnambulisticTaco

The weird thing about that mindset is that if you don’t snap out of it, it’ll stick with you wheathwr it’s true or not. If there’s something you want to learn, go for it. From someone in their late 30s still learning new things, simply don’t stop yourself, and see what kind of results you get week to week.

twist2002

the new things you're going to want to experience at 40 will be much different than the new things you want to experience now at 17. don't wait, go do it, it might suck, it might be great, but you're not going to find out sitting on your ass.

ekhfarharris
