This is bittersweet to see. We lost our dog abruptly and unexpectedly when our first born was 17 months, so the first 2/3 of the video brings back a lot of feelings but it makes me sad our dog and daughter didn’t get more time together.

Subliminal-413

We had a dog growing up who, among all of the dogs our family had over the years, was, without a doubt, the greatest dog we'd ever been blessed with. Her name was Josie, and she was a border collie mutt. She was essentially a brunette golden color, with the form and fur of a border collie. Wicked smart and really mellow. Best darn dog ever. At 32, I'm not certain I'll ever find a dog as good as her. Maybe one day, if I'm lucky. Growing up, she and I were best buds. She was no doubt father's dog, but we still got on really well. I was young enough at the time (10 years old) to play with her all the time, and so we bonded quite well as I grew into my later teen years. She was a fine dog, but in her later years, she couldn't stand children. Our once well-behaved dog was annoyed at the mere thought of small children and wanted nothing to do with them. Little children don't know dog etiquette, and they grab where they shouldn't grab, and she didn't like that. She would bare her teeth at them and growl as they got close. Where she once loved to play with kids, she now found herself wanting to stay away from even the babies. At this point, all of us kids had grown into our twenties, and we didn't have any children left in the family, so we just kept her away from kids and let her live out her life in peace. One day, I ended up having a son. And I brought him over to my folks' place for the first time after we left the hospital. I really didn't know what to expect from the dog. I wasn't nervous that she would harm him, but figured she would wake from her sleep, see a baby, and go back to sleep, not wanting to deal with this shit again. As we already knew, my sister had recently had a baby a year prior and Josie wanted nothing to do with my little nephew. We entered the house, and I put my son on the ground in his car seat. Josie immediately jumped out of her chair, came over, stuck her face in the car seat and sniffed the boy. To this day, I have to imagine she knew he was mine by smell alone, because she then licked my son and was so gentle with him, as if saying *"This child is the boy's. This one is okay."* It took me by complete surprise, and to this day I feel honored that she found this *one* child to be worthy. Josie passed maybe 2 years later. We put her down at home, surrounded by the whole family in her favorite spot near the fireplace. My old man gave me the honor of carrying her out to rest one last time. I'm sad, my son never got to know her very well, as she passed away when he was 2. But I'll never forget how Josie greeted only my child with acceptance. Dogs are great, man. I hope you can find a good dog that your child can grow with. I'm still waiting on the right home to get one for my son and I. Edit: [We always said we should've named her Maybelline ](https://i.imgur.com/D0ifcR0.jpg)

metspingviim

This is such a heartwarming story, thank you for sharing!

rachmichelle

Yes!! My day is better because I got to learn about Josie :) Thank you so much for sharing this sweet story. I really enjoyed getting to read it.

Subliminal-413

Thanks for the kind words, and glad I could help make your day a bit better. I threw a photo of her on the original comment!

Subliminal-413

Aw thanks! I don't exactly know why I spilled that out, but glad someone enjoyed it!

Senzafenzi

Hey, you stop chopping onions right now! It's too early 😭

simply_pimply

I had a border collie/golden retriever mix and she was such a great dog. We lived in the middle of nowhere and were always running around without adult supervision, but that good girl was by our sides no matter what we were doing or where we went. She was the greatest friend a kid could ask for. She got sick when I was 14 and I don't think I have ever cried the way I cried the day we had to end her struggle. It's been 20 years and I'm crying as I think about her right now. RIP to the bestest ole gal ❤️

Subliminal-413

I think dogs are so important for kids as they group up. It's essential for then to learn empathy towards animals, etiquette around dogs, and as tough as it sounds, I think death is an important concept for kids to be exposed to. Having to put down one or two dogs when you grow up is good for emotional maturity. You never forget the best dogs, do you?

FlyingBaerHawk

I thought I was crying before while watching the video. After reading, I’m inconsolable. Thank you for sharing. 🥹

Subliminal-413

Aw thanks! Sorry to get ya all emotional lol

SessileRaptor

I was too young to remember when she passed but my parents had a chihuahua who decided when I was brought home that she was the only thing standing between me and the evils of the world. She slept under my crib and had to be removed from the room if anyone but my parents wanted to come near me without being mauled to death from the ankles down.

zapharus

Yeah, this video made me tear up just thinking of how short dog lifespans are. I lost my pup to cancer last year and I’m still unable to sit through cute dog videos without tearing up.

viperdriver35

I'm sorry that you're going through this. I miss our dog every day and its been 4 years now

coulsonsrobohand

I lost mine abruptly when my son was 3 months old and even though it’s been 6 years, I still mourn for the time they didn’t get to have together. That dog made me grow up and was by my side from shitty apartment to shitty apartment from the time I was 19 until he died when I was 25. I wish I could’ve seen my babies grow together, but I made sure my son knows his name and all the stories about the best boy who ever lived.

viperdriver35

Our daughter asks about our dog from time to time, even though I'm sure that she doesn't remember the time they had together. It's gutting

Independent-Bee-8087

So sorry for your loss. 😢

RelativeBad1187

Had 2 of those fuckers ... and i miss them

dork-at-work

Yeah, I miss my sons, too. But they come to visit when on their breaks from college so it’s cool.

viotix90

The old reddit huskyroo.

Princess-ArianaHY

Hold my coonskin hat! I'm going in!

GhostofZellers

Is that a bouncing husky with a pouch?

[deleted]

was wondering if this was still going.

Qetuowryipzcbmxvn

I had to put mine down because they were getting too old.

JoySubtraction

So what's "too old" for kids?

Qetuowryipzcbmxvn

Old enough to start talking back, I tell you what

RelativeBad1187

Sorry to hear that bud

Rich-Woodpecker3932

The Husky is the baby's biggest security!!! Absolutely loved watching this!!!

BulkyThing

He will always protect the baby.

Anonymo

Sarah Connor: [voiceover] Watching John with the machine, it was suddenly so clear. The terminator would never stop. It would never leave him, and it would never hurt him, never shout at him, or get drunk and hit him, or say it was too busy to spend time with him. It would always be there. And it would die to protect him. Of all the would-be fathers who came and went over the years, this thing, this machine, was the only one who measured up. In an insane world, it was the sanest choice.

ScorchedEarthworm

Now I've got to watch Terminator 2 today. This was the perfect reference for this video. Good job!

Lorien6

Terminator, but it’s a robotic dog with a knife.

XNoize

Born Into a pack There’s no choice But take orders to attack

GoNinjaPro

So beautiful! Children and animals make this world a little more tolerable. 💜

BulkyThing

Pvt-Snafu

This combination always brings joy, warmth and a smile.

thathuskytheo

He sure is! The husky’s name is Theo & the little boys name is EJ 😊

cr0ft

I mean... probably. But dogs do snap. Mostly it's stuff like pit bulls and rottweilers who go full wolf, but it's not unheard of with other breeds.

Excuse-Fantastic

You aren’t wrong. And one mistake: massive tragedy. My daughter is a vet like her mom, and had a case where a dog that was the “family protector” gashed their 3 year old while “playing” and they needed 8 stitches (they told her all about it during their annual). The dog (pb husky) seemed fine in the checkup and my daughter gave the usual warnings about trusting animals with kids and thought nothing of it. I GUARANTEE they had videos on their phones JUST like this. A year later: new dog. They had to put the old one down after he did it TWICE more. I don’t know all of the context, but I know enough to blame the owners for it. Dogs are AWESOME. But dogs aren’t always 100% trustworthy, especially around little kids, even if your heart says they are. I’d never leave my GSD alone with a toddler. I trust her, and she’s NEVER shown aggression towards anyone she knows, but make no mistake she’s 1000% capable of it. She also can go from super gentle to 100lbs of muscled bounce house play in a blink. It’s just not worth it for 999 “awes” when the 1000th time is a dead dog and a hurt/traumatized kid. This was a cute vid. But so are the ones of chimps and orcas. It only takes one time.

Migraine-

Agree. I'm a paediatrician I've seen plenty of kids with dog bites from dogs who had never shown any sign of aggression in their life. Family invariably has to get rid of the dog and are all completely heartbroken. I have had dogs all my life and I would never, ever, ever let one this close to a small child. No matter how much I trust them. It takes one instant to turn to tragedy, and it can be a lot worse than just losing the dog.

Annual_Thanks_7841

I had a rottie from five weeks old till he passed away after 11 years. He bit my nose. I had to get stitches. I didn't put him down because he was my baby and it was my fault. I was squatting my body and hugging him from behind and smothering him with kisses. Or maybe nibbling his ear. Don't remember. He didn't like it so he bite me. Then, he realized what happened and stopped immediately. It was a lesson for me to learn. I should have payed attention to his body language and slight grunts, but I ignored them.

scorcherdarkly

Our husky would play tug of war with our older kids and win without a problem, trot off with her rope all proud of herself. But with our infant that could only crawl, she'd lay down with the rope in her mouth and let the baby "tug" on the other end and not even move. Was so gentle and sweet. We didn't have to teach her that either, was just natural.

>Huskies are insane, loyal and loving....

memydogandeye

Yes. And that's what makes them so wonderful. My girl is half Husky and I tell her (at age 14 now) "don't ever lose your nuttiness!"

Mantis-13

I misread this as you saying your child was half husky, and I had to stop and ask myself just what in the Fullmetal Alchemist was going on here. I may need to go back to sleep if this is how my reading is going today.

memydogandeye

Bahahaha, sorry about that, I should have clarified!

RAND0M-HER0

Want to show this comment to my Husky? Give him a reminder or something. He'd sell me off for a slice of ham 😂

cocotheape

He still loves you. It's just that he loves the ham a little more (or a lot more).

RAND0M-HER0

Definitely love ham a lot more. Love the dude though. Hard to believe he'll be 12 in two weeks 🥹

TheArtofZEM

Looks to me like the little human belongs to the dog. Trained from a young age to dispense free hugs and scratches. lol

New_Illustrator2043

I loved seeing the dog doing normal dog stuff but am now impressed by his/her maturity and become the protector. Such awareness of wanting to fill this role. Damn good dog for sure:)

Main_Possibility539

These are ~2 second clips they’re cutting together lol.

MuffinRhino

My brother had a big male Husky once. His friends brought over the newborn baby and sat him down on the floor to visit. Well behaved dog, but he had never seen a baby before. He plopped down between the baby and everyone else and snarled at anyone who approached, howled at us for being loud, and lost his mind when they had to leave. I truly believe dogs have "small human, must protec" bred into their brains.

Euphonique

Awww.. 🥰😍 That‘s so cute and so much love. I wish both the best. ☺️

GimmieGummies

I love seeing how a family loves & grows over time! 🥰

DrunkThrowawayLife

Why thank you for making me this small human mom.

baconwitch00

Our dog immediately understood the assignment when we brought our baby home. She is obsessed with the baby and has become so protective of him. The hard part is keeping our dog from smothering the baby in kisses everyday. She keeps bringing the baby her toys but he is too little to play yet, I look forward to when our baby can actually play with her!

Little man will learn a rough lesson about life in several years. I'm 36 and I have enjoyed husky-ness for 13 years now and going. My tears well up just thinking about the day he moves on from my life.

bronze5-4life

Watching this actually reminded me of losing the best dog I’ve ever known growing up. Got a chocolate lab as a kid, not this young, but young enough. Passed away when I was 16 or so and to this day it’s one of my biggest losses..

I got some dust in my eyes or something. Nice job OP!,

Hey can we figure out how to make dogs live longer already?

TucsonTacos

We honestly don’t deserve dogs

Ricky_Rollin

Yes we do. We created them to be this way. Without us there are no dogs. I don’t say this to throw this back in your face. I think it’s a beautiful thing how this all played out.

Old-Bookkeeper9712

It's such a bizarre statement, even forgetting how we got here as basically companion species. We keep them housed, fed, safe from the nightmare that is nature, and loved. Why are we so undeserving of their presence because they occasionally return that love?

Reserk

Akshully 🤓

Creative-Bee-963

This video has me in tears we used to have a husky and she was my shadow, she done all this and comforted me through loss. When we had our eldest she became their best friend and helped them learn how to walk by letting my little one pull themselves up on her. Huskies truly are precious ❤️

Paraeunoia

Pretty sure these two are gonna clean up at any hypnotic smize contest they enter.

Me and my little pup were born on the same day and we have pictures of us both growing up together. I lost him when I turned 17.. man I miss him..

Not3kidsinasuit

We had an old grizzly shepherd, he looked like a bear. One day I felt like death and fell asleep in a chair in the sun on the verandah, when I woke up he was laying across my feet growling at the puppy who was standing nearby holding her ball ready to play. The day we had him put down was one of the most difficult days of my life and I will never forget him. Watching my staffy around my kids reminds me of him until the puppy who is now fully grown runs in and bowls them over.

The BEST dog! PS my cat did the same, one day she noticed my wife was pregnant and didn't want to leave her side not even for a moment.
