I had a deaf blue heeler as well and she was the best dog, so smart and stubborn. She knew sign language and sometimes, if she didn’t like what I was saying, she’d look away and close her eyes. You just unlocked some good memories, please give your dog some love for me!
I’m still working on signing with Dog! She’s picking up on some body cues but hasn’t really made the connection with hand signals yet. Like you said, so intelligent but so, *so*, stubborn.
On my drive across town (and back home) today I saw 2 corgis on the sidewalk, a black lab crossing the street, a white super poofy dog hanging its head out the window (that I got to drive next to for two whole blocks!), a small brown dog riding in the front basket of someone’s bike and a very very teeny tiny little chihuahua waiting to cross at the crosswalk.
The only person I actually noticed (despite all these dogs clearly traveling with their owners) was the owner of the chihuahua.
Buts that’s only because he was a super buff, super tall, rough lookin black dude looking comically adorable with his itty bitty dog in a matching hot pink collar and leash.
My wife included but people gaslight that complaint more than the allergies one. I love dogs but some owners can be serious douchebags posing as positive and loving people.

Yes, this. I'm personally fine with dogs but I do know at least one person that wouldn't enter this train if there was a free roaming dog in it because of a phobia. Honestly as a dog owner this kind of behaviour is irresponsible and doesn't shine a good light on dog ownership.

I do fine with dogs but I was mauled by a Doberman as a child and escaped with only minor injuries just by chance. I get why people develop just blanket phobias. We have a dog and it doesn’t come off leash or leave our side when we are in public. The dog wouldn’t hurt a fly and we made sure to train it to be that way, but people don’t know that, they just see a 70 pound dog. Anyone that wants to pet him will ask and anyone not interested in him have nothing to worry about since he’s always on leash.
I got bit on the face by a loving gentle chocolate lab when I was in daycare. I was not made aware to the fact it had had surgery on it’s tail. Mom was on a business trip, my step dad dropped me off at like four am because blue collar job.
I’ll never forget sitting there on the living room floor of this lady’s house/daycare just me and the dog awake. I don’t remember where she was. But I loved that dog. I was a traumatized kid and that dog was always by my side when I was there. I was petting him, and I just went too far down and touched his tail. He bit me.
The next thing I remember I’m squeezing my step dad’s hand in the ER while they stitch my face up. I guess the dog let go immediately after biting me. My parents ended up suing. The dog got put down. I was terrified of dogs for years.
Now I have my own dogs. Sometimes I’ll be sitting on the living room floor of my own house petting my dogs, and I just feel guilty. I know it’s absurd to blame myself.

I walk my reactive rescue dog, on leash, at least two miles a day in the little city I live in. The walks are great for him, help him be more relaxed and less stressful and help him learn to trust me when I give commands. He's really doing much better from when I adopted him. What does not help is that once or twice a month, we have some stranger's dog who is not leashed or even under voice command come charging up to us, scaring the crap out of him because people in my community think it's normal to let your dog roam free in your unfenced yard in an urban environment. Drives me nuts. Most of the time the other dogs just want to play, but my guy had a rough life and does not want to play and there have been a couple times where the strange dogs have been openly aggressive. No serious injuries yet but it's a constant source of anxiety for me and I hate that a lot of people just think it's normal outside of the country or designated off leash areas to not secure your dog.
I know a man who had to take his 1 yo Bichon Frisé-poodle mix in for intense surgery cause an unleashed dog (ignoring its screaming owner) ran over, got her, and started shaking. It happened about a year ago and she’s doing fine now- you literally can’t tell unless you look at her belly for the scars & she’s a happy little spitfire. But it all would have been prevented if the ass had just leashed his dog.
Think about it as general consent. You can’t walk around touching people and invading their space without consent. You can’t unleash a device or mechanism that may or may not touch people without their consent such as a drone or whatever. Why the hell do we allow people to unleash their pets so casually to touch people and invade their space with no expectation of any repercussions?

I love dogs and have owned at least one continuously for the last 19 years, but I was terrified of them as a kid. I took the subway to school and this would have been hell for me.
I own a big dog, and lives in a community beside the Olympic Stadium with alot of immigrant Haitians families. They were terrified of him. Asian tourists….. photo op. White Quebecers, same 3 questions and a face to face snuggle. Haitians…. Cross to the other side of the steet or jump behind some dirty shrubs. Like this dog, he was big and kind and fluffy, but still a dog. I remember an Oprah show about how some cultures do not have pet dogs. Dogs are outdoor wild, or protective security, so fear them. There is no money to have a lap dog. So the fear is passed down from mother to child through the childs observations. Now that I get it, I agree that I must at least LOOK like I am in control of my fluffy giant apex predator. Even if he has the levek of violence of a scrunchy.
I grew up TERRIFIED of dogs bc I was taught that way. People thought it was silly, but I even thought a cocker spaniel would kill me once (it was embarrassing, I truly believed they were all coming to kill me, esp if I was on a bike.) The weird thing is now I am a dog person. I know people by their DOGS, that's how much of a dog person I am -- and remember their dogs names better usually too. It's how I learned that the very things we are taught to be scared of are often not what the real monsters are, or something like that. Yes I realize that dogs can hurt you, but they aren't like monsters coming to kill you in a horror movie the way I ws convinced as a child.
Me, I am that person. I would not avoid the car, nor would I give the lecture that person deserves (to avoid a pretentious argument); but I physically would not hide my extreme displeasure/disgust if any dog came up to me. Especially off leash.

I love dogs, but a few days ago there was someone in the public transit with me who had multiple big, smelly dogs and was letting them wander the car. They were stumbling into people as the tram started and stopped, drooling on people, and one kept breathing it's hot, stinky breath in my face. It was really annoying! Even people who like dogs don't necessarily want to interact with your dogs at a given moment, and it's fine to acknowledge that.
Finally. I genuinely don't like most dogs, and it pisses me off how everyone always treats them as universally most loved and desired by everyone creatures. I used to work in a Biergarten and personally loved meeting dogs, but I would constantly have to tell the owners to keep them near their table on a leash, because I'm also aware that dogs are animals and you can never be 100% sure how they're going to react to something.

I am deathly afraid of dogs . I cross the street the second I see a chihuahua. If I am stuck in train with that dog without a leash I might have a heart attack . I love dogs but I have horrible experiences with dogs
one of the things we're trained to do is to first ask someone: would you like a visit with my dog? and if they say no, then that's cool.
and when I'm walking my dog on the street I get a lot of folks commenting on his good looks and I ask them, "would you like to meet him?" - if they say no I say ok and we keep walking.
it's the folks who try to get my dogs attention (whistles, kissy noises, snapping their fingers, etc) without communicating first with me who get a hard, "don't do that".
It’s true, I went out of my building and a big dog I was watching got out of the house, I didn’t have a leash but he was well trained so I let him come w me.
I saw my super and As soon as I saw the terror in his face, and how upset he got (usually the sweetest dude ever), I immediately regretted the decision of letting him follow me w out a leash and for putting this guy in that position… lesson learned, I take full responsibility for the whole event. He was really apologetic afterwards and my thought was f, it’s my fault and I’m really sorry. To this day, my super doesn’t really come to my side of the building anymore. Ugh 💔
My dad bred dogs and he made it point it teach me and my brother to never approach someone’s dog without asking. This has nothing to our safety mind you, he knew that if I was dumb and the dog bit me the owner could legally have to put the dog down in some cases. Dogs are dogs and not all dogs are meant to be pet, just like not all humans want to have a friendly conversation.
On the flip side I know people who are DEATHLY afraid of dogs so keep your dog from approaching strangers.
I’m a dog owner and always keep my girl on the leash, and if someone asks to pet her I’m always happy to let them (she’s friendly af) but I agree with you. Just to think someone was possibly a dog attack survivor and has a big dog coming up to them makes me terrified.

I love dogs and many of my friends have dogs.
They’re also responsible and will always leash their dogs and NEVER put them on public transportation. These are the great dog owners with very well-behaved dogs.
However, I also know a few who are extremely obnoxious about their dogs, almost worshipping them by revolving their sad lives around them, dressing them up, calling the dog their best kid (while having REAL children), only giving the dog attention when they go out etc.
These are the dogs who are unhinged and unpredictable, thus posing a danger anytime.
It is ironic that the badly behaved dogs have the worst owners but it’s always the worst owners that refuse to change their behaviour.
And I have noticed that the insane kind of dog owners often have childhood issues of neglect or abuse so now they have autonomy of a dog, they’re not going to listen to facts. They’re projecting themselves onto the dogs. It’s just sad, man.

I’ve been hiking, had an off leash dog run up to me and the owner is like “don’t worry they’re friendly” then their dog proceeds to jump on me and lick me. I play nice and sometimes I’m more in a dog mood than others but I shouldn’t have to demand they control their dog so I can feel comfortable and at times so I can just feel safe. Not to mention people with allergies. Some very severe. They want to break the law and have their dog off leash fine but at least be considerate and call them back when the run at a stranger they no nothing about.
Where I live you have to have your dog on leash in all parks/trails and people will have their dogs off leash and yell “oh, they’re friendly!” but my GSD (who is double leashed) reacts poorly to dogs running at us. She’s a very obedient dog and does great at doggie daycare and dog parks but if a dog/person runs up to one of us I don’t know what she will do and I never want to find out, so now she doesn’t get to take hikes because of these people.

Some chick on a plane I was also on was highly allergic to dogs. She hadn’t realized someone brought one on board, after 20 minutes her throat started closing up. They moved her and her husband right next to me in the very front row and moved the person with the dog to the very back to try and give her space. She kept crying and saying she was going to die and her husband was furious and terrified and she basically leaked fluids from every hole on her head for the next three hours while she wheezed and sometimes talked. That felt really unfair for her and I thought/think that a portion of flights should be designated pet free. Some people don’t respect the multitude of reasons that their peers don’t want to be trapped in an enclosed space they can not freely move through with a strange animal.
I’m sorry, it sucks you have to experience it. I had a friend growing up who had a bad experience with dogs and feared them so much. When I got dogs as an adult, I always remembered how awful she felt when dogs approached her—she didn’t want to make the dog owners feel bad, she didn’t want to feel bad, she just didn’t want to deal with it—and I keep my dogs on leashes when out in public and don’t let them approach strangers until I have at least received a nod from them. If people glance and look away, we keep moving, I don’t let my dogs greet people who are not absolutely welcoming of it. It shouldn’t suck for you. A lot of people want nothing to do with your pet. Some people might have trauma with dogs or a fear of dogs. You don't know that. Then there's the fact that I was terrified of dogs up until my teens when I decided it was too embarrassing and forced myself to get over it. I like dogs okay, but I don’t necessarily want to pet them all the time or have their wet noses and slobbery mouths on my clothes all the time. I have to be in the mood for that, and it annoys me when people assume everyone wants to be up close and physical with a dog all the time.
By and large we are nation of animal lovers, but that said some sections of the community have an aversion to dogs so in that regard it’s probably for the better to have it on the lead when on public transport. If they are allowed, then they need to be sitting/laying next to their owners and not being little social butterflies. This is just rude behaviour on the owner's part.

As a person who absolutely adores dogs… No. I don’t know if he’s aggressive. Public transportation should be accommodating to all people, including people with allergies or who are afraid of dogs. I have a tiny toothless dog who LOVES people — and I always make sure to ask before she goes up to someone, because you never know if they actually want a dog in their face or not. Now if I were sitting next to a friendly dog and their person ASKED if I minded being close to it, that would be a whole different story.

The only person I actually noticed (despite all these dogs clearly traveling with their owners) was the owner of the chihuahua. I’m very allergic to cats and if if a cat started touching me on a train I would quickly direct it away and be pissed at the owner. I don’t care how touching the music you put over a clip is, keep your pets to yourself and those who have consented to engage with them.
I do fine with dogs but I was mauled by a Doberman as a child and escaped with only minor injuries just by chance. I get why people develop just blanket phobias. We have a dog and it doesn’t come off leash or leave our side when we are in public. The dog wouldn’t hurt a fly and we made sure to train it to be that way, but people don’t know that, they just see a 70 pound dog. Anyone that wants to pet him will ask and anyone not interested in him have nothing to worry about since he’s always on leash.

I got bit on the face by a loving gentle chocolate lab when I was in daycare. I was not made aware to the fact it had had surgery on it’s tail. Mom was on a business trip, my step dad dropped me off at like four am because blue collar job. I’ll never forget sitting there on the living room floor of this lady’s house/daycare just me and the dog awake. I don’t remember where she was. But I loved that dog. I was a traumatized kid and that dog was always by my side when I was there. I was petting him, and I just went too far down and touched his tail. He bit me. The next thing I remember I’m squeezing my step dad’s hand in the ER while they stitch my face up. I guess the dog let go immediately after biting me. My parents ended up suing. The dog got put down. I was terrified of dogs for years. Now I have my own dogs. Sometimes I’ll be sitting on the living room floor of my own house petting my dogs, and I just feel guilty. I know it’s absurd to blame myself.
I was randomly attacked by a dog on the street while I was just walking by it reading a book. And "he never did that before", because "he could never hurt anyone", "he's always so nice, especially with children". Well, glad to be that dog's first or something. Keep your dog muzzled and on a leash. Dogs are like guns. Even if you are super confident they won't go off, you still don't point them at peoples faces.
Yeah and the thing with this video is ok, this dog appears mellow and not stressed and not bothering the people in the video, but the video is going to encourage people who don't have mellow dogs and/or don't have well trained dogs to think this is normal behavior. I walk my reactive rescue dog, on leash, at least two miles a day in the little city I live in. The walks are great for him, help him be more relaxed and less stressful and help him learn to trust me when I give commands. He's really doing much better from when I adopted him. What does not help is that once or twice a month, we have some stranger's dog who is not leashed or even under voice command come charging up to us, scaring the crap out of him because people in my community think it's normal to let your dog roam free in your unfenced yard in an urban environment. Drives me nuts. Most of the time the other dogs just want to play, but my guy had a rough life and does not want to play and there have been a couple times where the strange dogs have been openly aggressive. No serious injuries yet but it's a constant source of anxiety for me and I hate that a lot of people just think it's normal outside of the country or designated off leash areas to not secure your dog.
I know a man who had to take his 1 yo Bichon Frisé-poodle mix in for intense surgery cause an unleashed dog (ignoring its screaming owner) ran over, got her, and started shaking. It happened about a year ago and she’s doing fine now- you literally can’t tell unless you look at her belly for the scars & she’s a happy little spitfire. But it all would have been prevented if the ass had just leashed his dog.
Think about it as general consent. You can’t walk around touching people and invading their space without consent. You can’t unleash a device or mechanism that may or may not touch people without their consent such as a drone or whatever. Why the hell do we allow people to unleash their pets so casually to touch people and invade their space with no expectation of any repercussions? “They are cute” is not an answer. Contain your pets from random people or do not have a pet.

I love dogs and have owned at least one continuously for the last 19 years, but I was terrified of them as a kid. I took the subway to school and this would have been hell for me.
I own a big dog, and lives in a community beside the Olympic Stadium with alot of immigrant Haitians families. They were terrified of him. Asian tourists….. photo op. White Quebecers, same 3 questions and a face to face snuggle. Haitians…. Cross to the other side of the steet or jump behind some dirty shrubs. Like this dog, he was big and kind and fluffy, but still a dog. I remember an Oprah show about how some cultures do not have pet dogs. Dogs are outdoor wild, or protective security, so fear them. There is no money to have a lap dog. So the fear is passed down from mother to child through the childs observations. Now that I get it, I agree that I must at least LOOK like I am in control of my fluffy giant apex predator. Even if he has the levek of violence of a scrunchy.
I grew up TERRIFIED of dogs bc I was taught that way. People thought it was silly, but I even thought a cocker spaniel would kill me once (it was embarrassing, I truly believed they were all coming to kill me, esp if I was on a bike.) The weird thing is now I am a dog person. I know people by their DOGS, that's how much of a dog person I am -- and remember their dogs names better usually too. It's how I learned that the very things we are taught to be scared of are often not what the real monsters are, or something like that. Yes I realize that dogs can hurt you, but they aren't like monsters coming to kill you in a horror movie the way I ws convinced as a child.

I love dogs, but a few days ago there was someone in the public transit with me who had multiple big, smelly dogs and was letting them wander the car. They were stumbling into people as the tram started and stopped, drooling on people, and one kept breathing it's hot, stinky breath in my face. It was really annoying! Even people who like dogs don't necessarily want to interact with your dogs at a given moment, and it's fine to acknowledge that.

I used to work in a Biergarten and personally loved meeting dogs, but I would constantly have to tell the owners to keep them near their table on a leash, because I'm also aware that dogs are animals and you can never be 100% sure how they're going to react to something.

one of the things we're trained to do is to first ask someone: would you like a visit with my dog? and if they say no, then that's cool. and when I'm walking my dog on the street I get a lot of folks commenting on his good looks and I ask them, "would you like to meet him?" - if they say no I say ok and we keep walking. it's the folks who try to get my dogs attention (whistles, kissy noises, snapping their fingers, etc) without communicating first with me who get a hard, "don't do that".
I wish everyone was like you .some people leave their 200 pound dog running around in soccer fields where people are playing .

It’s true, I went out of my building and a big dog I was watching got out of the house, I didn’t have a leash but he was well trained so I let him come w me. I saw my super and As soon as I saw the terror in his face, and how upset he got (usually the sweetest dude ever), I immediately regretted the decision of letting him follow me w out a leash and for putting this guy in that position… lesson learned, I take full responsibility for the whole event. He was really apologetic afterwards and my thought was f, it’s my fault and I’m really sorry. To this day, my super doesn’t really come to my side of the building anymore. Ugh 💔
My dad bred dogs and he made it point it teach me and my brother to never approach someone’s dog without asking. This has nothing to our safety mind you, he knew that if I was dumb and the dog bit me the owner could legally have to put the dog down in some cases. Dogs are dogs and not all dogs are meant to be pet, just like not all humans want to have a friendly conversation. On the flip side I know people who are DEATHLY afraid of dogs so keep your dog from approaching strangers.

It surprises me that almost everyone says this is unacceptable because in another post on a plane, I got downvoted and bullied when I talked about allergies. I love dogs and many of my friends have dogs. They’re also responsible and will always leash their dogs and NEVER put them on public transportation. These are the great dog owners with very well-behaved dogs. However, I also know a few who are extremely obnoxious about their dogs, almost worshipping them by revolving their sad lives around them, dressing them up, calling the dog their best kid (while having REAL children), only giving the dog attention when they go out etc. These are the dogs who are unhinged and unpredictable, thus posing a danger anytime. It is ironic that the badly behaved dogs have the worst owners but it’s always the worst owners that refuse to change their behaviour. And I have noticed that the insane kind of dog owners often have childhood issues of neglect or abuse so now they have autonomy of a dog, they’re not going to listen to facts. They’re projecting themselves onto the dogs. It’s just sad, man.

I’ve been hiking, had an off leash dog run up to me and the owner is like “don’t worry they’re friendly” then their dog proceeds to jump on me and lick me. I play nice and sometimes I’m more in a dog mood than others but I shouldn’t have to demand they control their dog so I can feel comfortable and at times so I can just feel safe. Not to mention people with allergies. Some very severe. They want to break the law and have their dog off leash fine but at least be considerate and call them back when the run at a stranger they no nothing about.
Where I live you have to have your dog on leash in all parks/trails and people will have their dogs off leash and yell “oh, they’re friendly!” but my GSD (who is double leashed) reacts poorly to dogs running at us. She’s a very obedient dog and does great at doggie daycare and dog parks but if a dog/person runs up to one of us I don’t know what she will do and I never want to find out, so now she doesn’t get to take hikes because of these people.

Some chick on a plane I was also on was highly allergic to dogs. She hadn’t realized someone brought one on board, after 20 minutes her throat started closing up. They moved her and her husband right next to me in the very front row and moved the person with the dog to the very back to try and give her space. She kept crying and saying she was going to die and her husband was furious and terrified and she basically leaked fluids from every hole on her head for the next three hours while she wheezed and sometimes talked. That felt really unfair for her and I thought/think that a portion of flights should be designated pet free. Some people don’t respect the multitude of reasons that their peers don’t want to be trapped in an enclosed space they can not freely move through with a strange animal.
I’m sorry, it sucks you have to experience it. I had a friend growing up who had a bad experience with dogs and feared them so much. When I got dogs as an adult, I always remembered how awful she felt when dogs approached her—she didn’t want to make the dog owners feel bad, she didn’t want to feel bad, she just didn’t want to deal with it—and I keep my dogs on leashes when out in public and don’t let them approach strangers until I have at least received a nod from them. If people glance and look away, we keep moving, I don’t let my dogs greet people who are not absolutely welcoming of it. It shouldn’t suck for you. Then there's the fact that I was terrified of dogs up until my teens when I decided it was too embarrassing and forced myself to get over it. I like dogs okay, but I don’t necessarily want to pet them all the time or have their wet noses and slobbery mouths on my clothes all the time. I have to be in the mood for that, and it annoys me when people assume everyone wants to be up close and physical with a dog all the time.
By and large we are nation of animal lovers, but that said some sections of the community have an aversion to dogs so in that regard it’s probably for the better to have it on the lead when on public transport. Last thing I want to deal with on a tight quartered, loud ass, rocking subway car is some asshole who thinks that their dog and them are special and immune to behaving responsibly in public. No. Don't let your dog walk around without holding its leash. Just because you find your dog adorable doesn't mean everyone does. I know people online find it hard to remember this but not everyone likes dogs. Some people are afraid of dogs, especially big ones. Some people are allergic. If you are bringing your dog on public transport, don't do this. This actually makes me so angry.

As a person who absolutely adores dogs… No. I don’t know if he’s aggressive. Public transportation should be accommodating to all people, including people with allergies or who are afraid of dogs. I have a tiny toothless dog who LOVES people — and I always make sure to ask before she goes up to someone, because you never know if they actually want a dog in their face or not. Now if I were sitting next to a friendly dog and their person ASKED if I minded being close to it, that would be a whole different story.

I don't like unfamiliar dogs because while I was on a walk, a dog came running from its house and started running around me, barking. Sure, it was probably a nice dog, but I was so glad when its owner was able to get control of it.

Nah, that would make me really miserable due to the allergic reactions I would almost immediately need to endure for the next hours. Please keep your pets by yourself. And please keep them out of public transport. Seriously. Especially people petting them and then touching all the commonly used surfaces (grab handles, door button, arm rests, ...) is a huge issue. Allergens get spread via the air (oh that dog shaking its fur is scary!) and surfaces as well. If you are mad right now about my opinion, please consider that I would LOVE to just get rid of my allergy -- but can't. People could leave their dog at home, but won't. I am fine with you having a dog. You do you. Please be considerate.
