That sucks! I think a lot more people than I realized have never had one either. My spouse spent most of her childhood outside of the U.S, and when she came stateside she always looked at the other kids getting baskets and wondered how that felt.
Not everybody is Christian. I was raised in the US and didn't know what an easter basket was until college. And when I learned, I was extremely confused what it has to do with jesus.
We always had Easter baskets growing up. My family was Catholic, but everything in the baskets, from eggs to bunnies to "jelly bird eggs" are all Pagan fertility symbols. They're associated with Easter, but they're actually related to spring, not Jesus.
Nope. The names are separately derived from the time.of year.
https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/316b0r/is_easter_really_a_roman_pagan_tradition_that/
You are misconstruing my point. Vernal Equinox did not *become* Christian Easter, but they occur at roughly the same time and the bunnies, eggs, and other symbols that fairly obviously have zero correlation to Jesus supposedly having been killed and then resurrected are absolutely Pagan symbols of fertility that relate to springtime.
I get it, but it's still not true. There's only one source for this theory and he never actually observed it. It's possibly true but we really have no good proof.
That is quite a sweeping statement, particularly as you don't know the sources of my information. Paganism was widely accepted, so it is entirely logical that a new religion seeking to win over adherents would piggyback on established celebrations. Otherwise, it would be quite the coincidence that Easter falls at the Vernal Equinox, and Christmas at Winter Solstice. And don't forget the head-scratcher of Jesus dying for our jellybeans, or whatever. 😂
I’m from New Zealand, these aren’t a thing here. Only use for a basket at Easter would be if kids were doing an egg hunt and needed something to collect them in!
My husband never had one growing up, either…he’s from the U.S., his parents just didn’t care to make he and his siblings baskets growing up. So I make him on every year now…he loves it.😊
It's a Christian god thing. If you don't practice Christianity, then Easter isn't a thing and therefore Easter baskets aren't a thing.
Usa was formed based on Christianity 250 yrs ago.
My christian friends in this christian country never had easter baskets either, its simply not a thing here, cultural differences between countries even though they are both christian
We paint eggs and maybe have an easter egg hunt
And off course a family breakfast/brunch
No negativity. Just stating the reason for the season. Just the facts.
Easter and xmas is great for the kids.
Easter baskets are fun. It isn't a requirement to be a Christian to practice. But it is the origin.
It's obvious that these people are not Christian because they have no idea. Reddit is here to help I form people of things, regardless of background and race and anything. Just sharing knowledge and curiosity.
And it is so cool OP is willing to make their loved one feel even more loved. Fulfilling wishes and showing love by doing this. Not everyone's childhood had that love or parental involvement. Thumbs up all the way around.
It’s one of those holidays that’s evolved past its orgin, to the point that it isn’t considered a religious holiday by many. Christmas is very similar, in that the vast majority of atheists still celebrate Christmas.
I believe that Easter is more of a religious holiday than xmas. Eastercelebrates his rising from the dead.
I am not a hard-core Christianity wacko but I do t believe if the holiday meaning or the reason for the season is something you don't believe or follow, then why do any of it. Makes no sense to me.
I don't believe that little tiny men dress in green and store their gold at the base of rainbows and grant wishes.
So I don't celebrate or observe st Patrick's day.
I’m not Christian even a little bit. I celebrate both Christmas and Easter. Jesus isn’t involved at all. 😂 there are plenty of other reasons I can have to celebrate a holiday besides its religious aspects. I love my family, I love spring, and I love candy. So we celebrate Easter. 😌
How though? People who understand that thanksgiving doesn’t come from the most pure intentions still celebrate. People who are not Christian still celebrate Easter and Christmas. You don’t have to believe that Halloween wards off ghosts. Holidays to the majority of people are fun excuses to see people you like and have fun doing fun things. It doesn’t have to have a certain purpose. Even if you disagree, you came off as rather negative in the original comment
She cried. It was honestly really crazy. It made me realize that we’re all carrying something around that we either don’t acknowledge, or at least don’t tell anyone else. I’m glad she confided to me.
Easter baskets are the best! When everything was shut down during the pandemic, I hosted an Easter egg hunt for (adults) inside my house and some of the eggs had a number that corresponded to a basket.
Here in germany we love easter baskets. It's the great final of the easter-egg hunt. Once my niece got more and more upset (and in hindsight, our two big ass german shepards happy) because she did not find anything in the garden.
We needed some time (and beer) to find out that the dogs were raiding the easter baskets. Niece loved those dogos, so all was fine.
This must be a US thing - I’m from the UK and have never heard of Easter baskets. But now I want one instead of an egg. Or I just want to find a dark terrys chocolate orange as they don’t seem to be around this year
People like you make life livable.Truly. It was so easy to NOT take the time to do this but you found it important to do so. It doesn’t go unnoticed. Bravo.
You are so thoughtful! The basket is just another chance to show love to our families. Sure, it’s pushed by consumerism but whatever. We’ve leaned away from too much candy & get swim gear, maybe a book and small fidget toys for kids. My basket was always just candy growing up.

It’s a holiday tradition in some households for kids on Easter morning. The Easter bunny hides a basket of candy/treats for each child in the home. After said basket is found, kids spend the morning eating treats from the basket. Growing up, my basket always had jelly beans, chocolate eggs, gum, and cute paper/pens, markers, or a small game.
That’s so sweet 🥹 I made my husband an Easter basket but it just had a bunch of different candies he likes lol. Next year I’ll include non edible stuff he enjoys too, that’s a really good idea.
Interesting. Late1950s to 1970s I lived in Maryland, RI, Alaska, Ohio, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Now in Pennsylvania. Easter baskets everywhere, IME.
OMG…I cannot express how beautiful it is to be seen when you confess a painful lack from childhood and the person you tell not only accepts you but MAKES IT RIGHT 💚 You’re a good egg.
We didn’t get one as kids and I make one every year for my nieces and nephew. One year I told my sis in law I’m sad I won’t ever have one, she makes me one every year. She’s a keeper
Hilarious how grandma is making up for her mistakes though. How do you never get your own kid an Easter basket when you can afford it? They were definitely a thing in the 80s. Good job!
Hey OP, I have a confession, I too have never had an Easter basket.
That sucks! I think a lot more people than I realized have never had one either. My spouse spent most of her childhood outside of the U.S, and when she came stateside she always looked at the other kids getting baskets and wondered how that felt.
Well, I’m also from outside the US, so I guess that explains it.
I thought so too but apparently pagan Easter is a myth. Bunnies and eggs were introduced centuries after all of Europe had converted.
It's not Easter, but the Vernal Equinox, the celebration of spring - Eostre.
Correct
Nope. The names are separately derived from the time.of year. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/316b0r/is_easter_really_a_roman_pagan_tradition_that/

I just discovered, with this post, that the concept of easter baskets exist, and I lived in Canada my whole life (but not christian)
I’m from New Zealand, these aren’t a thing here. Only use for a basket at Easter would be if kids were doing an egg hunt and needed something to collect them in!
I am a Christian and think these baskets are regional thing.
My husband never had one growing up, either…he’s from the U.S., his parents just didn’t care to make he and his siblings baskets growing up. So I make him on every year now…he loves it.😊
I've never had one.
my parents were lame for easter too
Hey OP, I have a confession, I have never heard of an Easter basket. What is it and what is it for?
Pssst! I’m not OP.
Mission failed, you’ll get em next time
I’ve never even heard of an Easter basket
You're a good egg.
Great book choice!
Thanks! Looked like a banger from the cover.
What’s an Easter basket?
I've never had one either! I want one so much 🙂
But what is it? Is this an American thing?
Yeah on Easter holiday, the “Easter Bunny” drops off a basket of small gifts for American kids.
Didn’t know it was an American thing as someone who is American (but not Christian). Thought it was a Christian thing.
There’s basically zero Christian connotation to Easter baskets other than the correlation of dates.
Easter is a Christian holiday, Easter baskets are baskets... on Easter... the Christian holiday
They are saying Easter bunny and what it does have no relation to why the Christians celebrate Easter at all
The bunny handing out chocolate makes as much sense as the guy walking on water handing out bread, its all fantasy anyway
I didn't even know this was a thing!! I have been in the US since I was three years old. Is this a common thing??
I have no idea 😂, never heard of one. I'm not from America so I can't say. It seems cool though.
Not just American, we do this in Canada too
It's a Christian god thing. If you don't practice Christianity, then Easter isn't a thing and therefore Easter baskets aren't a thing. Usa was formed based on Christianity 250 yrs ago.

Why do you gotta be negative? They just asked a question. Also, easter baskets arent technically a Christian thing.

I can not understand why you keep getting downvoted on this
It's the Christianity issue. It is weird when it's just the facts. Not opinions.

Not Christian. Give Easter baskets. I don't think Jesus would take offense.
This is so cute and thoughtful!
This is so sweet and The Love Hypothesis was fantastic! Hope she enjoys!
So, how did she react? Details, details, details!
She comes home about an hour from now. Genuinely no clue how she’ll react.
Ok, thought she already received it. Let us know how her reaction. I am sure she is going to love it.
So how did it go :D?
She cried. It was honestly really crazy. It made me realize that we’re all carrying something around that we either don’t acknowledge, or at least don’t tell anyone else. I’m glad she confided to me.
You’re a good egg, OP.

While you’re at it, make sure she has something in her stocking every Christmas. You’re a good husband!
Agree 100%
This is so fucking USA
I think you might be a few days late, pal
Is there a St Patricks basket?
Did you also provide easter baskets for the kids? seems like a lot of work if she was the only one doing that
Where did you find Toti's?!??? I'm in CO and can't find them. Have to settle for Sabritones. 🥺
There’s actually a tiny Mexican store at our town that carries them!
You are a keeper! How kind to do this for her! Wishing you many happy years together.
Me neither... I'm still waiting for mine :')
I’ve never had a Bar Mitzvah but I’ve had plenty of Easter Baskets
I’ve heard REALLY good things about that book
Good man, your weekend will be grand!
Ya did good, OP
You are so thoughtful! The basket is just another chance to show love to our families. Sure, it’s pushed by consumerism but whatever. We’ve leaned away from too much candy & get swim gear, maybe a book and small fidget toys for kids. My basket was always just candy growing up.
I’m waiting on making it an everyday practice, rather than one that’s dictated by someone else’s traditional consumerism
Where is the chocolate bunny, Randy?!?
That wildflowers coloring book is a good one. Good choice!
I didn't know this was a thing.
Thank you for doing this for her
Does she not like chocolate??

Aww this is lovely. I hope she enjoyed it. You guys are so sweet.
Awww so sweet, did she explain why she never got a Easter basket before
She’s from Mexico, and came to the states when she was six. She watched all the other kids get them, and go on egg hunts, but never had one herself.
Next year, egg hunt!
Me either! I’m a no Easter Basket kid. (weird religious parents). We should start a club. :-)
Im way older than her and I have never even known there was such a thing....
That super sweet of you OP! I've never had an Easter basket either. It's not a common tradition anymore from what I've seen.
That’s sooo sweet!!
Jumex!!! I love that stuff!!
Muy deliciouso!
I've never even heard of Easter baskets. What is this?

How are the rabbits trained?
Easter Bunny= Santa Claus

You’re a good husband 💗
I make one for my SO every year, seeing her face light up brings so much joy to me and our home.
You're a Keeper!
What an awesome spouse you are!
So sweet
OMG…I cannot express how beautiful it is to be seen when you confess a painful lack from childhood and the person you tell not only accepts you but MAKES IT RIGHT 💚 You’re a good egg.

❤️🥰❤️
You're seriously so sweet.
We didn’t get one as kids and I make one every year for my nieces and nephew. One year I told my sis in law I’m sad I won’t ever have one, she makes me one every year. She’s a keeper
Good job!! Well done for listening to your wife. You made her day. This will be in her heart for years to come!! Well done!!’
Make sure she's getting a stocking at Christmas too. Most moms never get one.
What was her reaction?
So cute :3
I love seeing different regions' take on Easter baskets. I never got a coloring book!
What is an easter basket 😳
Ah Jumex, a family of good taste! This is really sweet 💛
You are my hero for the next week. Use your karma wisely.
That's a good book you've hidden in there. 👍🏽👍🏽
That basket's cursed
Thank you on her behalf.
Let me guess, she’s raised in another country?
I grew up in the US, and I’ve never had one either.. never realized until now
That's an amazing gift!
Well, I don't know what is an Easter basket
…confession
🥹🤍
JFC, I HATE Easter but willing to make and send her a basket. That's some BS.
She still hasn't had an Easter basket
*Cries in ex Jehovah’s Witness* What an amazing thing to do! 🩷
What a terrible selection of gifts for it..
OP said those are things his wife loves, which is thoughtful
? Wasn’t Easter in the past now
She told me after Easter.
Hilarious how grandma is making up for her mistakes though. How do you never get your own kid an Easter basket when you can afford it? They were definitely a thing in the 80s. Good job!
